Les Owen
|
Les was born in Fishguard, Pembrokeshire, South Wales and started teaching in Croydon in 1967. He retired in 2000, and worked part time as a Court Usher from 2003 - 2010. He joined Belmont B.C. in 1978 then moved to Streatham Park B.C. In 1985 Les won his first major trophy - The Wandsworth Open Singles He joined Epsom B.C. in May 1987. Les qualified for his Surrey County Badge in 1997 reaching the quarter finals of the Open Singles. He has reached the Quarter Finals of the Surrey Open Singles twice since and the Quarter Finals of the Surrey Pairs in 2005 (with George Sperring). Les was presented with his County Badge playing against The Isle of Wight at Ventnor on 27th May 1998. Les won the Paston Cup in 1999 and was Runner Up in The BLESMA Pairs (Memorial Cup) with Peter Pearce in 2000. He won the Ember Open Triples in 1990 with John Skilton & Brian Salway. Les was elected to serve as Captain of Epsom Bowling Club for the 2009 Centenary Year. He remained Captain for the 2010, 2011 & 2012 seasons and became an Honorary Club Vice President in 2010. In 2011 Les reached the Area Final of the Surrey Fours with John Hart, George Sperring & Graham Naish & the Area Final of the Surrey Triples in 2015 with Geoff Purrott and Mick Gray. Les became the Sutton & District representative in 2013 organised the Finals Day held at Epsom Bowling Club on Saturday 21st September 2013. In 2014 Les became Senior Vice President of Epsom Bowling Club. Les became Men's Captain of Epsom Bowling Club in 2015/2016 & he played his 200th game for Epsom in the East Surrey League on July 5th 2015 against Purley Bury (Skip). Les was a member of the squad that won the East Surrey League in 2015. Because of several medical problems Les decided not to join Epsom Bowling Club as a playing member in 2018. He joined the Social Section. He started playing again in 2019. Les was elected Men's Captain for 2020/2021. Les became the Club Secretary of Epsom Bowling Club in October 2020/22. (this being a temporary role until an AGM). In 2021 Les became the Competition Secretary for the Past Times Competition (controlled by S&DBA) & ran the Competition until 2022. Les was presented with the Surrey Leopard Award by the County President, Martin Harbottle, on the Epsom Bowling Club green on 23rd August 2022. Les was elected as Men's Captain for 2025. Indoor Bowls Les played at Croydon Indoor bowling Club for almost 25 years. In this time he won the Pairs twice (with Philip Main) in 1986/87 & 1990/91. He won the Old Coulsdon Open in 1998/99 & the Croydon Open Plate in 2013/14. Les re joined Sutton Indoor Bowling Club in 2011. He was a finalist in the Pairs in 2012. In 2014 Les won the Croydon Open Plate with Robert Wharf, Terry Buckland & Keith Adams (Sutton IBC). He was elected Captain of the Men's section at Sutton Indoor Bowling Club for the 2014/2015, 2015/16, 2016/17, 2017/18, 2018/19 seasons. He was elected onto the Surrey Indoor Bowling Association as a Councillor, representing Sutton IBC in September 2014. During the 2014/2015 Indoor season Les picked Allergy UK as the Charity during his Captaincy. Over £1,000 was raised & a cheque was presented by his Grandson Sam to Allergy UK. Both Les & Sam were chosen as Fund Raisers of the Month by Allergy UK for May 2015. 2016/17 Les chose Canine Partners as his Charity & in 2018/19 his charity was The Air Ambulance. All 3 charities benefitted from over £1,000 each year. In 2017 Les equalled the record for the number of appearances in the Jubilee Cup - 56. He lost in Final of the Championship Singles in 2016/17. Les was elected Records Officer for Surrey County Indoor Bowling Association in March 2018. Les qualified for his SCIBA Badge on 17th October 2019 v Hampshire. Les did not renew his Indoor Membership at Sutton IBC for 2020/2021. He joined Mole Valley IBC for 2020/21. Les was a member of the team that won the Eric Hingston Cup in 2022 & 2024. Les was elected Honorary Secretary of Surrey County Indoor Bowling Association on 11th January 2023. |

Les was a member of the team that won the Top 10 in 2008 against Warlingham Park. Les was a member of the team that lost in the Final of the Past Times in 2010. Les was a member of the team that lost in the Final of the Yonwin Cup in 2010, 2011 & 2012 & in the ESL Top 10 team that lost to Wallington in the Final. In 2013 Les reached 50 games in the Jubilee Cup. |

Graham Pilbrow
|
Graham started bowling in 1975 at the age of 27. Graham was Captain in 2005 & 2006. He was Vice Captain in 1987, 1988 & 2004 and Match Secretary in 2004. He qualified for his Surrey County Badge in the Unbadged Singles in 1979 reaching the Semi Final. He has won the Worthing Open Singles, been Runner Up in the Hove Singles and won the Paston Cup on six occasions. In the Surrey Open Singles Graham reached the Quarter Final in 1991, the Final in 1992 and the Semi Final in 1998 & 2002. He reached the Area Final of the E.B.A Champion of Champions Singles in 1998. Graham reached the quarter Finals of the Surrey Pairs with Peter Miller and the Semi Final of the Champion of Champions Singles in 1992. He reached the final of The St Raphael’s Cup (Mixed Pairs) (Sutton & District B.A.) with Eileen Mills in 2005. Graham organises 'The Event' a September Open Competition. Graham reached the Semi Finals of the Surrey Triples in 1998 with John MacDonald & Morris Lomas and the Area Final in 2008 with John Hart & Brian Kenyon. Graham reached the Area 3 Top 4 Final in 2009 with Brian Kenyon, Fred Read & John Hart. Graham was presented with Honorary Life Membership by Epsom Bowling Club on 19th July 2024. |

Geoff Purrott
|
Geoff joined Epsom Bowling Club in 1999. He was educated at Mitcham Grammar School and Croydon Polytechnic. He spent 2 years in the Royal Signals Experimental Section. Geoff only had one employer working as a Cartographer, Engineering Draughtsman and a Planning Engineer for an Electrical Distribution Company. Geoff was Vice Captain in 2003 & Captain in 2004. Geoff constantly helps out at the Club - one of the members who simply gives up a great deal of his own time. He won the September Open played at Epsom Bowling Club in 2010 with Pat Buckley, Cyril Newman & Peter Miller. In 2012 Geoff was elected as a Honorary Vice President of Epsom Bowling Club. He became Green Ranger in 2014. Geoff reached the Area Final of the Surrey Triples in 2015 with Mick Gray & Les Owen. Geoff was a member of the squad that won the East Surrey League in 2015 & was a member of the squad that won the Chrystie League in 2017. Geoff was a member of the squad that won the Vilamoura Mixed League in 2017. |

Ted Ray
|
Ted joined Epsom Bowling Club in 2000, but left in 2011. He was a member of the Epsom team which won the Area Final of the Top Four Competition 2006 with Martin Harbottle, Pat Buckley & Peter Miller. Ted is now in the Catering & Gardening Business. Ted did not renew his membership in 2012. Ted rejoined in 2019. He made his 50th appearance in the ESL on Sunday 8th September 2019 at home against Old Coulsdon. (played 2). Ted became the Men's Vice Captain in 2021/22. Ted was elected as Publicity Officer to serve on the Executive Committee in 2022. He also took on the responsibility of looking after the ESL Midweek Triples started in 2022. Ted reached the Area Final of the Bowls England Mixed Fours in 2023 (with Mary Green, Fi Drinkall & David Fearn). Indoor Ted was a member of the team that won the Eric Hingston Cup in 2022. In 2022/23 he looked after the organisation of the Surrey Patrons matches. Ted is a member of Mole Valley Indoor Bowling Club. On the 3rd March 2024 Ted played with David Fearn, Wayne Thornton & Mark Hopkins (Leatherhead B C) & beat Croydon 17 - 10 to reach the final of the County Fours. They lost in the Final. In doing so Ted has now qualified for the Surrey County Indoor Bowling Association Badge Certificate. |

Fred joined Epsom Bowling Club in 1995. Fred reached the Area 3 Top 4 Final in 2009 with Brian Kenyon, John Hart & Graham Pilbrow. Fred was a member of the squad that won the Chrystie League in 2017. Fred was a member of the squad that won the Vilamoura Mixed League in 2017. Fred became the first Epsom member to play 100 matches in the Chrystie League. He won the Arthur Hughes Triples with Dave Pearce & David Bragg in 2021 becoming the first Triple to win this Trophy at Epsom Bowling Club. Fred was a member of the team that won the Eric Hingston Cup in 2022. Fred was a member of the squad that won the Chrystie League in 2023 & 2024. |

Keith Roberts |
Keith joined Epsom Bowling Club in 2014 (August). He previously bowled at Sutton Bowling Club. Keith was elected as Vice Captain of the Club for 2017. He was a member of Donyngs Indoor Bowling Club after moving from Sutton IBC in 2019. He rejoined Sutton IBC in 2020. Keith was a member of the squad that won the East Surrey League in 2015. Whilst at Sutton Keith won the Unison Pairs in 2012, the Sutton Open 4's in 2013 & was a member of the team that won the Past Times in 2014. Keith won the Drawn Fours at Sutton Indoor Bowling Club in 2016. He was a member of the team that lost in the Final of the Yonwin Cup in 2016. Keith was a member of the squad that won the Chrystie League in 2017. Keith was a member of the squad that won the Vilamoura Mixed League in 2017. He was elected Vice Captain in 2017. For the 2019/21/22/23/24 Season Keith was the Competition Secretary. Keith became the Mixed Team Manager in 2021/22/23. Keith lost 16 - 22 in the Sutton & District B A Ted Peirce Trophy on Saturday 23rd September 2023. Keith was a member of the rink that won on the Chrystie League Presentation Evening 12th August 2024. (with Mick Cooper, David Fearn & Barry Coe). Indoor Keith was a member of the team that won the Eric Hingston Cup in 2022 & 2024. Keith was a member of the squad that won the Chrystie League in 2023 & 2024. Keith reached the final of the S&DBA Ted Peirce Trophy on 21/08/23 by beating David Fearn (Epsom) 21 - 16. On 13th July 2024 Keith played his 100th game in the East Surrey League against Redhill. He was a member of the rink that lost in the Semi Final of the West Surrey League in 2024. Keith qualified as a Grade 1 Coach in October 2024. |
