Derek Harvey

Derek joined Epsom Bowling Club as a Social member in 2022.  He decided to become a playing member in 2023.  Derek is a very experienced bowler who has held several positions of responsibility in Surrey over many years. Unfortunately Derek had to revert to a Social Member for 2024.

 

Ken Horgan

Ken joined Epsom Bowling Club in 2008.  He started bowling at Streatham Constitutional Bowling Club in 1982.

He then joined Merton Bowling Club in 1993 and played there until joining Epsom in 2008.

Ken did not renew his membership in 2012.

David Hutchison

David joined Epsom Bowling Club as a new bowler in 2010.  In 2012 David became an Auditor for Epsom Bowling Club.

Sadly David passed away on the 27th October 2017.

John Huxford

 

 

John joined Epsom Bowling Club in 2006.  He made his debut in the Yonwin Cup in 2011 & his debut in the Past Times in 2011. John won the Club Championship in 2013 for the first time.  In 2014 John won the Area 3 Top 4 Final against Wallington 24 - 21 (with Brian Kenyon, Andrew Turnbull & John Warren). They lost in the Semi Final to Knaphill 20 - 25.  John was finalist in the Paston Cup in 2014 (lost to Wallington 13 - 21).  He was a member of the squad that won the East Surrey League Title in 2015.  He was elected as representative of the Bowls Section to serve on the Executive Committee in 2015.  He was instrumental in the Club having the use of a Min Bus in 2015.  John was a member of the team that lost in the Final of the Mole Valley Cup in 2016.  He won the St Raphael Mixed Pairs (with Sandra Huxford) in 2016.  John was a member of the squad that won the Vilamoura League in 2017.  He was Health & Safety Officer in 2018.

John transferred to Social membership after suffering the affects of Covid 19.

Ernie Iles

Ernie joined Epsom Bowling Club in 2010.  He transferred to Social Membership in 2011.

 

Tony Jackman

Tony was born Strood, Kent. Moved to London, evacuated WW11 to Exmouth (1940-42) and N.Wales (1944-45).  Left school in 1948, served 6 year apprenticeship as draughtsman, working in heavy engineering.  Called up for National Service in the Royal Air Force (1954-56).  Returned to work in London.  Joined B.P. in 1963 working in the Kent Oil Refinery, Isle of Grain, was Engineer i/c Drawing Office 'till closure in 1981.  Transferred to B.P. Research Centre Sunbury, engaged on oil exploration projects till retirement in 1992.

While working in the refinery, started bowling with B.P. Kent Club in 1967, served as Competitions Secretary 1968, Triples winner in 1969.  Played Medway Bowls Association matches serving as Competitions Secretary, General Secretary and Match Secretary at various times throughout the seventies and was Association President in 1977.

Having moved to Epsom Tony joined the Club in 1983 and reached the Triples Final with Vic Gowing and Bernard Jenner in 1984.

Tony was Secretary of Epsom Bowling Club from 1987 to 2007.  He was awarded The Leopard Award in 1999 for his services to bowls.  He is currently Club Senior Vice President and Club Trustee.  Tony became the President of the Club in January 2008 and remained in office for the Centenary Year.  Tony became the Men's Section Secretary in 2012 but stood down in 2013.

Tony did not rejoin in 2022.

Significant Interests:

Interests other than bowls, obviously the family, restoration of stationary engines, steam railways, supporting Chelsea football team and researching our family history back to 1565 in Kirdford (West Sussex) and our Canadian cousins who emigrated from Petworth in 1836.

Significant Others:

Married Doreen in 1957, have three children, Richard, Susan and Jane, also two grandsons Jack and Oliver.

Mike James

Mike joined Epsom Bowling Club in 2012 as a new bowler.  Mike was a member of the squad that won the Vilamoura Mixed League in 2017.  Mike did not rejoin in 2022, but rejoined in 2023. He joined Social in 2024.

Derek Jones

Derek won his first trophy at Epsom Bowling Club in the Triples in 2009.

Derek was the Sutton & District representative for Epsom Bowling Club during 2011/2012. 

Sadly Derek passed away on Saturday 7th May 2016.

Ronnie Kuen

Ronnie joined Epsom Bowling Club as a new bowler in June 2021.  Ronnie played his first competitive game in the Chrystie League on Monday 6th June 2022 away at Leatherhead. He did not rejoin in 2024.

Anthony Knight

Anthony joined Epsom Bowling Club as a new bowler in 2012.  Anthony did not renew his membership in 2013.

 

Ken Lacey

Ken was born in Crouch End N8.  He was educated at Christ's College Finchley, and spent 2½ years in the

RASC, mostly in Egypt.  He spent 12 years estimating & Planning for Aircraft and Engineering Work, 10 years buying Mechanical & Electrical Engineering Supplies, and 19 years on Production Planning & for a Lighting Manufacturer.

Ken retired in 1992, and joined Epsom Bowling Club in 1994.  Ken helps to organise & run the Chrystie League.

Ken was a member of the squad that won the Chrystie League in 2017.

Sadly Ken passed away on Thursday 29th November 2018.  He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Duncan joined Epsom Bowling Club in 2006.  Previously he was at North Cheam Bowling Club having

Bill Lawrence

Bill joined Epsom Bowling Club in 1987.   He left in 1990, but rejoined in 2000. Bill is 'Mr Epsom'.  He always helps out in all quarters no matter how large the task.

He gives up a great deal of time for the club , most of these 'chores' un seen by fellow members.  Bill marked the singles in the Final of the Top 10 against Wallington in 2012.  Bill was a member of the squad that won the East Surrey League in 2015.

Bill became the Property Manager in 2016.  Bill played his 50th game in the Chrystie League on Monday 12th June 2017 against Brockham.  Bill was a member of the squad that won the Chrystie League in 2017.  Bill was a member of the squad that won the Vilamoura Mixed League in 2017.

Bill was hospitalised in 2019 and now is at home receiving full time care.

He was granted Life Membership of Epsom Bowling Club in 2019.

Sadly Bill passed away on Tuesday 21st April 2020

Derek Martin

Derek joined Epsom Bowling Club in 2008.  This is his first experience of playing bowls.  He won his first Club Competition Trophy in the Fours 2009.

Derek became an Auditor for the Club in 2012/23.  Derek was a member of the squad that won the Chrystie League in 2017.

Derek played his very first East Surrey League match on Saturday 3rd August 2019.  He played lead away against Wallington & becomes the 159th member of Epsom Bowling Club to play in the ESL.

Derek did not renew his membership in 2024 - joined the Social membership.

Simon joined Epsom Bowling Club in 2016 from Ashtead Bowling Club. He is an experienced bowler.  Simon was a member of the squad that won the Vilamoura Mixed League in 2017. John Meningen

John joined Epsom Bowling Club from Ashtead Bowling Club in 2015 as an experienced bowler.  He played his first ESL match against Purley Bury on Sunday 8th May 2016.

John qualified for his Surrey County Badge on Wednesday 29th June 2016 by beating Tony Buckee (Leatherhead) 21 - 18.  He was a member of the team that lost in the Final of the Yonwin Cup in 2016.

John was elected Men's Captain in 2017 - 18.  He was a member of the Yonwin Cup team that lost in the Semi Final in 2018.

John won his first trophy in 2018 winning the Two Wood Singles. He won the Men's Singles Championship also in 2018 & 2019.

John decided not to renew his membership for 2021.

Ron joined Epsom Bowling Club in August 2008. Ron was a member of the team that lost in the Final of

the Past Times in 2010.  Ron was a member of the team that lost in the Final of the Yonwin Cup in 2010.

Ron was a member of the Yonwin Cup team that lost in the Final against Cheam in 2012 & in the

Top 10 team that lost to Wallington in the Final.

Ron left Epsom Bowling Club at the end of the 2013 Season.

Peter Miller

Peter joined Epsom Bowling Club in 1992.  He qualified for his Surrey County Badge in 2002.  He reached the quarter Finals in the Pairs with Graham Pilbrow.

Peter was Vice Captain in 1994 & 1995  a member of the Club Executive Committee, and has been Joint Premises Manager.  He was a member of the Epsom team which won the Area Final of the Top Four Competition 2006 with Martin Harbottle, Ted Ray & Pat Buckley.  Peter reached the Quarter Final of the Surrey Pairs in 2007 with Martin Harbottle. He was the representative for the Club on the Surrey Executive in 2015/2016.

Peter was responsible for introducing 'Miller's Triples' into the Club.  Peter was a member of the team which won the Walter Cross Trophy in 2007 & was the first player to win the 100 Up Cup in 2009.  He was a member of the team that lost in the Final of the Yonwin Cup in 2010.  He won the September Open played at Epsom Bowling Club in 2010 with Geoff Purrott, Cyril Newman & Pat Buckley.

Peter helped with Social Events such as Barbeques.  In 2012 Peter organised the very successful Queen's Jubilee Day.

In 2012 Peter became Green Ranger for Epsom Bowling Club.  On the 24th June 2012 Peter played his 200th match in the East Surrey League against Purley Bury. (Peter played 3, won his rink & the match 86 - 71, 4 - 2)  Peter was a member of the Yonwin Cup team that lost in the Final against Cheam in 2010, 2011 & 2012 & in the Top 10 team that lost to Wallington in the Final IN 2012.

Peter was a member of the successful Yonwin Cup Winners in 2003.  He was a member of the team which won the

Peter is a qualified coach.

Jubilee Cup in 1995 & 1999, a member of the team which lost in the Final of the Times Herald 1997 & a member of the team which lost in the Finals of the Top 10 in 2000, 2003 & 2006.  Peter was a member of the team that won the Top 10 in 2008 against Warlingham Park.

In 2013 Peter took over the running & maintenance of the Green. He resigned in September 2014. He was a member of the rink that lost in the Final of the Mole Valley Cup in 2013.  Peter was a member of the squad that won the East Surrey League in 2015.  He was a member of the Yonwin Cup team that lost in the Semi Final in 2018.

Peter was presented with hs SCIBA Badge on 17th October 2019.

Peter played his 300th ESL match on Sunday 11th July 2021.

Graham Naish

Graham joined Epsom Bowling Club in 1998. Graham left the Club in 2006, but rejoined in August 2008.

He qualified for his County Badge in 1998.  He won his first Club title in 2011.

Sadly Graham passed away on Monday 5th August 2019.  He will be sadly missed by all who knew him & who had the pleasure of playing with him.

Graham has qualified for his Surrey County Badge Graham was a member of the successful Yonwin Cup

Winners in 2003.  He was a member of the team which lost in the Finals of the Top 10 in 2003 & 2006.

Graham made his debut in the East Surrey League in 1998 and has played in 158 matches.  He made his

debut in the Yonwin Cup in 1998 & has played in 39 games.  Graham was a member of the team that lost in the

Final of the Past Times in 2010.  Graham was a member of the team that lost in the Final of the Yonwin Cup

in 2010 & 2011.

In 2011 Graham reached the Area Final of the Surrey Fours with John Hart, George Sperring & Les Owen.

Graham was a member of the Yonwin Cup team that lost in the Final against Cheam in 2012 & in the

Top 10 team that lost to Wallington in the Final.  Graham was a member of the squad that won the

East Surrey League in 2015.  He was a member of the team that lost in the Final of the Yonwin Cup in 2016.

Eddie Needham

Eddie joined Epsom Bowling Club as a novice bowler.  He played his very first Men's Friendly match

against Southey away on Saturday 18th June 2011.  Eddie won his first major trophy in 2014 (Handicap Fours).

Eddie transferred to Social in 2017.

Sadly Eddie passed away on Tuesday 19th June 2018.

Dave Pearce

Dave joined Epsom Bowling Club as an experienced bowler in November 2016.

He joined from Chipstead Bowling Club.  He was a member of the Yonwin Cup team that lost in the Semi Final in 2018.

He won the Arthur Hughes Triples with David Bragg & Fred Read in 2021 becoming the first Triple to win this Trophy at Epsom Bowling Club. Dave did not renew his membership for 2022.

Len was born in London & joined Power-Samas Bowling Club, Thornton Heath in 1959.  He then joined Epsom Park B.C. before moving to Epsom Bowling Club in 1972/73.  Len was Vice Captain in 1985, 1992 & 1993.

Ray joined Epsom Bowling Club as a new bowler in 2018.

Sadly Ray passed away on 7th January 2019.

 

Geoff Reynolds

Geoff was born in South London – left school March 1939 and volunteered for the RAF in 1942 when

he was conscripted shortly afterwards.

De – mobbed in February 1947 whereby he started a Tobacco, Confectionary and Vending business until

1989 when he retired.

Geoff played all sports, football being his main love – London schoolboys, Fulham juniors and Grimsby Town.

He joined Heathfield B.C. in 1972 and won his first trophy The Wandsworth Open Fours. In 1987

he moved to Epsom and joined Epsom B.C.

Geoff was President in 1998 & 1999.  He was a Club Vice President.

Sadly Geoff passed away on the 1st January 2008

Geoff enjoyed all sports including Epsom BC, Horse Racing and Carpentry.

Jim Robson

James (Jim) retired from Nestle’ in 1989 after an interesting commercial career with the Swiss

multi-national spanning some 37 years.

He joined Ashtead BC in 1987 and soon got involved in management affairs -Bar Manager 3 years,

Club Secretary 3 years, Men’s Secretary 3 years & Club Chairman 3 years.

Finalist in a Club Singles and in a Men’s pairs competition, Finalist in Surrey Area 3 Top 4 and

semi-finalist in West Surrey pairs, whilst at Ashtead.

Jim joined Epsom Bowling Club in 2003 and was appointed Honorary Secretary for the

Men's Bowling Section in 2006.  He is the Secretary/Treasurer for the East Surrey Bowls League

and has been involved with the East Surrey League for 10 years as delegate, Treasurer and

Secretary at various times.

Jim left Epsom Bowling Club in 2008.

David was born in South Africa, but has lived for over 50 years in Epsom.  He retired in 2000,

but works at the weekend for a local Estate Agent.  He joined Epsom Bowling Club in 2004 and

plays Indoor Bowls at Leatherhead during the Winter months.

Dave won his very first singles title in 2008.

David is the Surrey Patrons representative for Epsom Bowling Club. He did not renew his membership in 2016.

Peter decided to come back to Epsom Bowling Club in August 2016, but did not renew

his membership in 2018 for personal reasons.

Vic Shrosbree

Vic joined Epsom Bowling Club in 1987 from West Barnes Bowling Club.  He was a Club Vice President

and he was responsible for compiling the club records of matches played for over 10 years.

He also took on the responsibility of organising the '100' Club Draw.  Vic helped with the organisation

of the September Open for many years.

This Web Site could not have been done without the excellent records he kept.  Grateful thanks go to

Vic for his outstanding contribution to the history of the club.

Sadly Vic passed away on Monday 5th May 2008.

John Southam

John was born in Manchester, studied Medicine at University and Surgery at the local hospitals.

After 4 years in Birmingham John was appointed Consultant Surgeon at Epsom District Hospital.

The NHS was very good and John had an excellent 25 years.  He retired in 1993 and joined Epsom Bowling Club.

This has been an enjoyable experience because of the pleasant members.  John also bowls at

Mole Valley Indoor Bowling Club.

John did not renew his membership in 2012.

Ron Snow

Ron joined Epsom Bowling Club in 1999.  He was the Vice Captain for the Men's Bowling Section during 2007/8.

In 2012 Ron was elected as an Honorary Vice President at Epsom Bowling Club. 

Ron was a member of the squad that won the Vilamoura Mixed League in 2017.

Ron did not renew his membership in 2018.

Significant Interests:

Badminton - County Secretary for 11 years.  Represented Surrey Veterans 55's, 60's & currently 65's.

Member of Veterans Policy Group at Badminton England.  Secretary Sutton & District League since 1988.

 Ron was elected President of the Surrey County Badminton Association in 2011. He first joined the

County committee in 1978 then after a short break in the late 80's became Secretary in 1993 until 2007

when he was elected as a Vice-President.  He was the representive for the East Surrey League from 2005 - 2011.

Ron became the Bowling Section Secretary in 2013/14.  Ron was a member of the squad that won

the Chrystie League in 2017.

Over 55 Pairs in 2002 with Archie Flashman.  David was a member of the team that lost in the Final

of the Yonwin Cup in 2010.  David won the St Raphael Pairs (Sutton & District Bowling Association)

with Sandra Huxford in 2011.  David was a member of the Yonwin Cup team that lost in the Final

against Cheam in 2012 & in the Top 10 team that lost to Wallington in the Final.  David was elected

Vice Captain in 2013. He resigned this position in Mid May.  In 2014 John won the Area 3 Top 4

Final against Wallington 24 - 21 (with Brian Kenyon, Andrew Turnbull & John Warren).

David substituted for Andrew Turnbull in the Semi Final of the Surrey Area Competition losing to Knaphill 20 - 25.

David was runner up in the Mixed Pairs at Sutton Indoor Bowling Club in 2016.

David played his 100th match in the ESL on Saturday 25th June 2016.  He left Epsom Bowling Club

at the end of 2017 to join Sutton Bowling Club.

Percy Trumble

Percy was born in London in 1918.  He spent 6 years in The Royal Signals, 4½ in Western Desert.

Percy joined the Evening News aged 14 & retired 45 years later as Deputy Managing Editor.  Widowed in 1981.

Bill Walmsley

 

Bill joined Epsom Bowling Club in 2005.  Bill played mainly in the afternoon.  Sadly he passed away in April 2013.
 

Roy Ward

 

Roy was born in Lewisham, South London.  After National Service Roy became a self employed Newsagent

in Peckham (before Del Boy) and Battersea.  He retired in 1982.  Roy started playing bowls in 1979 at

Worcester Park, and had one year at Southey before joining Epsom Bowling Club.  He became Match Secretary in 1986 following the sudden death of George Nicholls.  Roy was President in 1992, 1993, 1994 & 1995.

He was Captain in 1987, 1988, 1989 & 1991, Vice Captain in 1986.  Roy was elected to

Surrey County B.A. Executive in 1990 and served as Area 3 Competition Secretary from 1993 to 2006.

He was a County Middleton Cup selector 1998 - 2004, County Indoor Competition Secretary 2000 - 2006.

Roy was awarded Life Membership of King George Indoor Bowling Club in 2001 and

Surrey County Certificate of Merit in 2006. He was Competition Secretary  1993 - 2006.

Roy was elected as Surrey President in 1999.  He is a Club Vice President.

He was a member of the Executive Committee.  Roy was the representative for

Sutton & District Bowling Association up until 2010.  Roy was given the honour of

Life Membership of Surrey County Bowling Association on Saturday 14th November 2015.

Roy changed to Social Membership in 2018.

Sadly Roy passed away on Friday 7th May 2021.

Roy made his debut in the very first match in the East Surrey League in 1987.

Richard joined Epsom Bowling Club as a new bowler in 2018.  He did not renew his membership in 2021.

Alan Wybrow

Alan started bowling at Sutton Unison in 1975.  He then moved to Cheam Village and spent two years there

 He joined Epsom Bowling Club in 2008.  Alan won his first trophy at Epsom Bowling Club -

The Windeler Cup in 2009.

Alan became the 139th member to represent Epsom in the League in 2009.  Alan left the

Club at the end of the 2011 season.

Harold Yates

Harold was born 1920 in Fulham, London and within a few months of leaving school was on 3rd September

1939 in the RAF for war service, spending almost 7 years in uniform before, in 1946 resuming training

in the Quantity Surveying profession to attain the professional qualification of MRICS (Member of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors).  During his career he lived for 4 years in Germany attached to the

Works Department supporting the British Forces.  He and his wife were keen Tennis and

Badminton players until in 1979, prior to his retirement in 1982, he joined the Epsom Bowling Club.

Sadly Harold passed away on Saturday 8th March 2008.
