Eric Brown
|
Eric was born in Harrow, Middlesex in 1936. He served in the Royal Artillery from 1954 - 1957, spending 2½ years in Hong Kong. He was a Substantive Bombadier, holding various positions including Battery Chief Clerk and a Drill Instructor. Eric took part in all sports including Cricket, Football, Hockey and Athletics - winning the regimental three miles title on more than one occasion. Eric is very proud of his two achievements in his sports history - and one in particular. In 1960/61 he won a Cup Winners Medal with the Cedars Football Club, who were members of the Balham & District Football League. In the summer of 1961 Eric scored over 1000 runs in the season. This had never been achieved before in the long History of the Hovis Sports Association Cricket Club (part of Rank, Hovis McDougal Group), nor will it ever be done again as the ground was sold two months later for development. Work experience included the oil industry with Brown & Root; and finally with Copygraphic - one of the largest suppliers of stationery and office equipment in the country, in administrative and management positions. Eric took early retirement on medical grounds (Angina) in January 1993. Eric joined Epsom Bowling Club in 1995 (as one of what was and possibly still is the largest single intake in one year - 12), christened the Class of '95 - and that has stuck ever since. Eric is one of two remaining members of that intake along with Fred Read. Eric was Vice Captain in 1998. He is a keen & active member of the Club Working Party. Eric joined the Zippers Bowling Association in 2001 & was Publicity Officer from 2006 to 2012. He was also a Committee Member. He is a Life Member of the Surrey Patrons. & was the Publicity Officer for Epsom Bowling Club in 2011. In 2017 Eric decided to join Social. Sadly Eric passed away on 15th June 2017. He will be sadly missed by us all. |
