Chrystie League

Epsom played at home against Leatherhead on Monday 30th July 2018.  They won on both rinks & the match 46 - 17 (4 - 0).  This win gives Epsom the title for the second year running with one game to play against Pippbrook.

Details:

Rink 2  Bill Lawrence  Graham Coleman  Fred Read  Bob Blaker  won 14 - 11

The scores were level 6 - 6 after 8 ends, but Epsom immediately went ahead and stayed in front for the rest of the game.  They led 11 - 8 after 13 ends and went on to win by 3 shots.

Rink 3  Derek Martin  Stefan Lukatschat  Howard Ellis  John Hart  won 32 - 6

Epsom restricted Leatherhead to winning on just 5 ends.  They out played Leatherhead all evening.  The led 16 - 1 after 7 ends & 26 - 5 after 14 ends.  They won by 26 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 46  Leatherhead 17   Epsom 4 points  Leatherhead 0 points

This was the best recorded win v Leatherhead (+29) & the best rink win against Leatherhead (+26) since the League began.

 

Past Times

Epsom played at against Wallington on Monday 30th July 2018.  They drew on both rinks & lost on the extra end.

Details:

Home:  Simon Meller  Geoff Purrott  John Huxford  Peter Miller  drew 17 - 17

Epsom started badly finding themselves 0 - 7 down after just 5 ends.  However, they came back well to take the lead, 11 - 10 on the 13th end.  They were 15 - 11 ahead on the 17th end, but lost the lead 15 - 17 on the 20th end.  Epsom scored 2 shots on the final end to tie the scores.

Away:  Dave Pearce  David Bragg  Andrew Turnbull Martin Harbottle  drew 20 - 20

Epsom led all evening right up to the 20th end.  They led 12 - 8 after 10 ends & 19 - 15 after 18 ends. They went into the last end 1 shot down, but scored 1 shot to tie the scores.

Wallington won the extra end.

 

Mixed Friendly

Epsom played at home against The Piscatorials Bowling Society on Sunday 29th July 2018.  This was a Triples match.  They won on 3 rinks, lost on 2 rinks & lost overall 62 - 76. However, on rink 6 two Epsom players played for the Piscatorials.  Because of the bad weather this match ended at 15 ends.

Epsom was 6 - 11 down after 8 ends, but drew level 12 - 12 on the 11th end.  Epsom lost the next 3 ends & lost overall by 6 shots.

Rink 3  Bill Lawrence  Trish Southgate  Geoff Purrott  Won 14 - 11

Epsom led 7 - 1 after 7 ends, but went behind 7 - 9 on the 10th end.  Epsom won the last 3 ends to win by 3 shots.

Rink 4  Heather Pigden  Pat Buckley  Martin Harbottle  won 11 - 10

Epsom was 3 - 6 down after 8 ends, but drew level 8 - 8 on the 11th end. Going into the last end Epsom was 9 - 10 down, but scored 2 shots to win by 1 shot.

Rink 5  Mike James Ruth Ruth Nixon  Sylvia Smart  won 15 - 9

The scores were level, 6 - 6 after 8 ends but Epsom went ahead 10 - 7 on the 11th end.  They won by 6 shots.

Rink 6  Audrey Jones  David Ganney  Brian Collis  lost 9 - 27

Epsom struggled on this rink playing against two of the Club's players.  They were 3 - 3 on the 5th end, but lost the next 8 ends to go 3 - 27 down.  They lost by 18 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 62  Piscatorial BS 76

 

Epsom first played the Piscatorials in 2011. They also played them in 2012, 2014, 2016 & 2017.  Epsom have won on each occasion.  The best win came in 2017 when Epsom won 123 - 60 (+63).

East Surrey League - Men

Epsom played away against Shirley Park on Saturday 28th July 2018.  They won on 2 rinks, lost on 2 rinks & lost overall 68 - 77 (4 - 8). This was a very disappointing result for Epsom.  After 15 ends across the 4 rinks Epsom was 42 - 56 down (-14), but fought back well to lead 62 - 61 after 18 ends.  However, Epsom lost 6 - 16 in shots over the last 3 ends across the 4 rinks.  This in itself was disappointing.

This rink struggled all afternoon scoring on only 6 ends.  They were well down, 4 - 15 after 10 ends, 6 - 20 behind after 18 ends & lost by 14 shots.

Rink 3  Dave Pearce  Andrew Turnbull  Martin Harbottle  John Meningen  won 19 - 10

The scores were level 5 - 5 after 9 ends, but Epsom went ahead 10 - 7 on end 15.  However, Shirley Park drew level on the next end, but Epsom won the last 5 ends to win by 9 shots.

Rink 4  Stefan Tomm  John Hart  Simon Meller  Peter Miller  lost 17 - 26

After 10 ends Epsom was behind 8 - 16, but fought back to be just 2 shots behind on end 17 (16 - 18).  They finished badly dropping 7 shots over the last two ends to lose by 9 shots.

Rink 5  Phil Sims  Keith Roberts  John Huxford  Jim Scott  won 18 - 13

After 7 ends the scores were level 5 - 5.  Epsom then went ahead 13 - 6 on the 12th end.  Epsom was ahead 18 - 9 on the 17th end, but lost the last 4 ends dropping a single shot on each of these.  They won by 5 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 68  Shirley Park 77   Epsom 4 points  Shirley Park 8 points.

The best win against Shirley Park came in 2015 when Epsom won 113 - 37 (+76) & the best rink win came in the same match, 39 - 6 (+33).  The most shots scored in a match was 178 (73 - 15) in 2016.  The best sequence of wins is 6 (2014 - 2018).  Since the League began Epsom have played Shirley Park 34 times, won 17 & lost 17.  The last time Epsom lost to Shirley Park was in 2013.

 

Sutton & District Bowling Association - Arthur Hughes Triples

Epsom played against Chessington on Thursday 26th July 2018.  They lost 14 - 18.

Details

Epsom was always behind in this game.  They trailed 6 - 12 after 9 ends, 12 - 16 after 15 ends & lost by 4 shots.

 

Men's Friendly

Epsom played a Friendly at home against Newdigate on Wednesday 25th July 2018.  They won on all 3 rinks & the match 58 - 39. This win gives Epsom Men 10 wins out of 10 this season.  Epsom were in danger of losing this match after 10 ends across the 3 rinks when they were 19 - 29 down.  However, Epsom had a much better last 8 ends to maintain a 100% record this season.

Epsom was 5 - 9 down after 10 ends & 11 - 13 behind on the 15th end.  However, they won the last 3 ends picking up a total of 9 shots to win by 7 shots.

Rink 5  Derek Martin  Brian Collis  John Hart  John Warren  won 16 - 9

Epsom held the lead all afternoon on this rink.  They led 8 - 6 on the 12th end & won by 7 shots.

Rink 6  Stefan Tomm  John Meningen   Geoff Purrott  Peter Miller  won 22 - 17

Epsom had a really poor start finding themselves 0 - 10 down after 6 ends.  They were still behind 15 - 17 after 14 ends, but won the last 4 ends picking up 7 shots to win by 5 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 58  Newdigate 39

The last defeat in Men's Friendlies came on 31st August 2016 against Cheam Fields (50 - 68).  This defeat is the only loss in a total of 34 matches played by Epsom Men in the last few years.  The record of sequence wins is 22.

 

Yonwin Cup

Epsom  played at home against Cuddington on Tuesday 24th July 2018.  They won on all 3 rinks & the match 74 - 33.  This was the 15th time Epsom have reached the Semi Final in this Competition.  It also equals the highest shot difference win which was against Ewell Village in 2015 (77 - 36) +41 shots.  This was an excellent all round performance by Epsom.

All rinks finished on 20 ends.

Details:

Epsom only allowed Cuddington to score on 4 ends all evening.  Epsom led 11 - 3 after 10 ends, 15 - 6 after 14 ends & won all the remaining ends to win by 18 shots.

Rink 5  Stefan Tomm  Simon Meller  John Huxford  Peter Miller  won 26 - 12

Epsom had an excellent lead, 17 - 5 after 10 ends and continued to stay ahead winning by 14 shots.

Rink 6  Dave Pearce  Graham Coleman  Terry Berry  John Warren  won 24 - 15

Epsom struggled for the first 7 ends finding themselves 3 - 11 down.  However, they took the lead on the 12th end, 14 - 12 & won the last 5 ends to win by 9 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 74  Cuddington 33

Phil Sims played in his very first Yonwin Cup match.

This win puts Epsom in the Semi Final to be played by 3rd September on a neutral green against Malden Manor or Supreme.

 

Chrystie League

Epsom  played at home against Bookham on Monday 23rd July 2018.  They won on both rinks & the match 41 - 24 (4 - 0)

This was an excellent result after losing last week on both rinks.

Details:

After 8 ends Epsom led 10 - 3, but Bookham narrowed the gap to just 3 shots on the 14th end (10 - 13).  However, Epsom finished strongly winning by 9 shots.

Rink 3  Derek Martin  Stefan Lukatschat  Phil Sims  John Hart  won 21 - 13

After 10 ends Epsom led 9 - 6, but Bookham drew level, 11 - 11 on the 14th end. Epsom finished well winning 4 of the last 5 ends outscoring Bookham 10 - 2 to win by 8 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 41  Bookham 24   Epsom 4 points  Bookham 0 points

 

Area 3 Top 4 Epsom 'A'

Epsom 'A' played at home against Chipstead on Monday 23rd July 2018.  They lost 12 - 23.

After 11 ends Epsom was 7 - 13 down & lost the next 4 ends to go further behind 7 - 21 after 15 ends.  Epsom conceded on the 19th end losing by 11 shots.

 

ESL League - Ladies

Epsom Ladies played at home against Old Coulsdon on Saturday 21st July 2018.  They lost on both rinks & the match

22 - 53 (0 - 4).

Details:

Epsom led 3 - 2 after 3 ends, but then lost the next 10 ends to go 3 - 21 behind.  They lost by 23 shots.

Rink 6  Lesley South  Frances Suttonwood  Ruth Baker  Anne Hoffmann  lost 15 - 23

The Epsom Ladies put up a very good performance on this rink.  The score does not really reflect the afternoon.  After 10 ends Epsom was 8 - 14 down and 13 - 20 behind on the 18th end.  They lost by 8 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 22  Old Coulsdon 53   Epsom 0 points  Old Coulsdon 4 points

 

Area 3 Top 4 - Epsom 'B'

Epsom 'B' travelled to Bletchingley on Friday 20th July to play in the Area 3 Top 4.  They lost 18 - 19.

Epsom started badly finding themselves 4 - 12 down after 10 ends & 10 - 16 behind on the 17th end.  They immediately scored 5 shots to be just 1 shot adrift, 15 - 16.  Going into the last end Epsom was 17 - 19 down, but managed to score just 1 shot.

Vilamoura

Epsom played against Carshalton on Friday 20th July 2018.  They lost at home & away & the match 26 - 42 (0 - 6).

Details:

Home:  Ruth Baker  Stefan Lukatschat  Howard Ellis  lost 13 - 19

Epsom led 8 - 6 after 9 ends, but then lost the next 4 ends to go behind 8 - 14. They lost by 6 shots.

Away:  Janet Newman  Phil Sims  David Bragg  lost 13 - 23

Epsom led 6 - 1 after 6 ends & 12 - 7 after 12 ends.  Carshalton then came back into the game outscoring Epsom 1 - 16 leaving Epsom losing by 10 shots. 

Final Score:  Epsom 26  Carshalton 42   Epsom 0 points  Carshalton 6 points

 

Men's Friendly

Epsom played a Friendly Triples at home against Wallington on Thursday 19th July 2018.  They won on all 3 rinks & the match 64 - 29. This is the 9th win for the Men in Friendly matches & remain unbeaten this season.

Epsom led 8 - 3 after 9 ends & went on to win by 6 shots.

Rink 2  Bob Lister  Frank Thompson  Geoff Purrott  won 24 - 12

Epsom led 11 - 5 after 9 ends & kept the lead from then on.  They won by 12 shots.

Rink 3  Bill Lawrence  Stefan Tomm  Martin Harbottle  won 25 - 8

Epsom raced into a 17 - 1 lead after 10 ends & continued to out play Wallington going on to win by 17 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 64  Wallington 29

 

Vilamoura

Epsom played against Purley on Thursday 19th July 2018.  They won at home & away & the match 43 - 23 (6 - 0). 

Details:

After 9 ends Epsom was 6 - 9 down & 12 - 13 behind on the 15th end.  However, Epsom won the last three ends picking up a total of 8 shots to win by 7 shots.

Away:  Howard Ellis Heather Pigden  John Hart    won 23 - 10

Epsom led al afternoon.  They led 7 - 2 after 6 ends, 17 - 5 after 12 ends & won by 13 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 43  Purley 23   Epsom 6 points  Purley 0 points

 

Mixed Friendly

Epsom played a Friendly Mixed Triples away against Brockham on Wednesday 18th July 2018.  They lost on all 3 rinks & the match 38 - 61. This was the first defeat for Epsom this season in Mixed matches.

After 12 ends Epsom led 12 - 7, but lost the next 3 ends to go behind 12 - 14.  They lost by 1 shot.

Rink 3  Bill Lawrence  Derek Martin  Heather Pigden  lost 16 - 25

Epsom found themselves 2 - 20 down after 11 ends, but won the next 4 ends scoring a total of 14 shots to close the gap to 16 - 20 (15 ends),  They then lost the last 3 ends to lose by 9 shots.

Rink 4  Audrey Jones  Brian Collis  Fred Read  lost 8 - 21

After 10 ends Epsom was 2 - 11 down & 5 - 18 behind on the 15th end.  They lost by 13 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 38  Brockham 61

Epsom played away against Esher on Monday 16th July 2018 and won on both rinks & the match 50 - 24 (4 - 0).  This was a good comeback after losing at home last week.

East Surrey League Top Club (Top 11)

Epsom played away against Sutton on Monday 16th July 2018 in the  Semi Final of the ESL Top Club Competition.  They lost on all disciplines.

Details:

Rink 5  Two Wood: Bob Blaker  lost 7 - 17

The scores were level 6 - 6 after 10 ends, but Bob lost the next 5 ends to go behind 6 - 15.  He finally lost by 10 shots on the 17th end.

Rink 5  Singles: Dave Pearce  lost 8 - 21

Dave never got into this game.  He was 3 - 10 down after 10 ends & 6 - 15 adrift after 15 ends.  He lost by 13 shots.

Rink 3  Pairs: Simon Meller  Peter Miller  lost 16 - 28

After 10 ends Epsom was only 1 shot down, 11 - 12, but Sutton had the better of the rest of the game leaving Epsom losing by 12 shots.

Rink 4  Triples: Stefan Tomm Andrew Turnbull  Terry Berry   lost 14 - 25

A very similar story to the Pairs with Epsom trailing by 2 shots, 9 - 11 after 10 ends. They lost by 11 shots.

Rink 2  Fours: Phil Sims Geoff Purrott Martin Harbottle John Meningen    lost 13 - 27

The Fours were well down after 10 ends - 8 - 17 & went on to lose by 14 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 0 points  Sutton 5 points

 

Stefan Tomm, Simon Meller & Phil Sims played in their first game in this Competition.

 

Vilamoura

The match against Sutton on 12th July 2018, although played with Sutton 1 player short at Sutton has been recorded as 6 points to Epsom & 0 points to Sutton.  Epsom players & scores are noted for the records.

 

Mixed Friendly

Epsom played a Friendly Mixed Triples away against Ashtead on Sunday 15th July 2018.  They won on 2 rinks, lost on 2 rinks & won the match 61 - 50.  This game was moved to the morning because of the World Cup Final being played in the afternoon.  The match was played over 15 ends.  This win gives Epsom 4 wins out of 4 this season.

Epsom was behind all through this game.  They were 3 - 14 behind after 10 ends & lost by 8 shots.

Rink 3  Bill Lawrence  Guest  Sylvia Smart  won 19 - 8

Quite the opposite from rink 2 with Epsom 14 - 4 ahead after 10 ends & going on to win by 11 shots.

Rink 4  Mike James  Frank Thompson  Sandra Huxford  won 21 - 9

Another good win on this rink with Epsom leading 15 - 6 after 10 ends & winning by 12 shots.

Rink 5  Vic Phillips  James Smart  John Huxford  lost 10 - 14

A game of two halves here with Epsom leading 10 - 2 after 9 ends and then failed to score for the rest of the game losing by 4 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 61  Ashtead 50

 

ESL League - Men

Epsom Men played away against Sutton on Saturday 14th July 2018.  They won on 1 rink, lost on 3 rinks & lost the match 71 - 85 (2 - 10).  This turned out to be quite a challenge for many Epsom players as the green was running very fast.

Epsom led 10 - 8 after 10 ends & allowed Sutton to score on only 2 more ends.  They led 14 - 11 after 15 ends and scored a total of 9 shots over the last 3 ends to win by 14 shots.

Rink 4  Dave Pearce  Andrew Turnbull  Martin Harbottle  John Meningen  lost 18 - 21

The scores were level 9 - 9 after 9 ends & still all square 15 - 15 on the 15th end.  Sutton won 4 of the last 6 ends leaving Epsom losing by 3 shots.

Rink 5  Phil Sims John Hart  John Huxford  Jim Scott  lost 15 - 22

The scores were level 7 - 7 after 10 ends, but Sutton went ahead 12 - 18 on the 15th end.  Epsom finally lost by 7 shots.

Rink 6  Howard Ellis  Bob Blaker  Terry Berry  John Warren  lost 11 - 29

Epsom struggled on this rink all afternoon.  They were well down, 5 - 14 after 10 ends & 10 - 20 behind on the 15th end.  Epsom lost the last 4 ends and the rink by 18 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 71  Sutton 85  Epsom 2 points  Sutton 10 points

 

This was the 33rd time that these two Clubs had met in the ESL.  To date Epsom have won 18, lost 15.  The best win against Sutton came in 1998 when Epsom won 105 – 53 (+52) & the best rink win came in the same game 34 – 8 (+26).  The most shots scored in a match is 177 when Epsom lost 77 – 100 in 2016.

Epsom have scored maximum points against Sutton on 5 occasions (1995, 1998, 2000, 2005 & 2017).

Sutton won the League in 1997.

 

Ladies' ESL League

Epsom Ladies played away against Sutton on Saturday 14th July 2018.  They lost on both rinks & the match 29 - 50 (0 - 4).

Details:

The Epsom Ladies on this rink on this rink were 5 - 16 down after 10 ends & 12 - 17 down on the 15th end.  They lost by 11 shots.

Rink 2  Audrey Jones  Sandie Harvey  Ruth Baker  Sylvia Smart  lost 14 - 24

Epsom was only 2 shots adrift on the 10th end, 7 - 9, but went further behind 9 - 16 on the 16th end.  They won the next 2 ends to get within 2 shots again, but then lost the last 3 ends to lose by 10 shots.

Final core:  Epsom 29  Sutton 50   Epsom 0 points  Sutton 4 points

 

The Ladies have played Sutton 21 times in the League.  They have won 9, lost 10 & drawn 2.

The best win against Sutton came in 2014 when the Ladies won 50 - 25 (+25) & the best rink win came in the same match, 27 – 13 (+14).

The Ladies won their League in 2005, 2006 & 2014.

 

Men's Friendly

Epsom played at home against Cuddington on Wednesday 11th July 2018.  They won on all 4 rinks & the match 84 - 36.

This means that Epsom are undefeated this season in all Friendly matches (8) & all ESL League matches (9).

Epsom led 11 - 5 after 10 ends & 18 - 7 after 15 ends.  They won by 15 shots.

Rink 2  Mike James  Phil Sims  Geoff Purrott  won 17 - 14

Epsom led 13 - 3 after 10 ends, but then lost the next 4 ends dropping 8 shots.  They still led 14 - 11 after 15 ends & won by 3 shots.

Rink 3  Bill Lawrence  Pat Buckley  John Meningen  won 23 - 7

Epsom totally dominated this game allowing Cuddington to score on just 2 ends of the 18 played. They led 12 - 0 after 9 ends, & won the last 6 ends to win by 16 shots.

Rink 4  Howard Ellis  Frank Thompson  John Hart  won 21 - 7

Epsom led 10 - 3 after 10 ends, 14 - 7 after 15 ends & won by 14 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 84  Cuddington 36

 

Past Times

Epsom 'A' played against Caterham on Tuesday 10th July 2018. They lost at home, but won away.  They won overall 41 - 35.  This turned out to be quite an extraordinary game with the home team being soundly beaten, but the away team winning very well.

On the 6th end Epsom was 5 - 8 down, but did not score again until the 15th end.  Epsom won 6 of the last 7 ends scoring 1 shot on each occasion.  They finally lost by 17 shots.

Away: Dave Pearce David Bragg Andrew Turnbull John Meningen  won 30 - 7

Epsom was in total control of this game at Caterham.  They led 13 - 4 after 10 ends, 20 - 4 after 15 ends & went on to win by 23 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 41  Caterham 35

John Meningen played in his first game in this Competition.

 

Chrystie League

Epsom Men played at home against Brockham on Monday 9th July 2018.  Epsom lost their unbeaten record this season losing on both rinks & the match 22 - 35 (0 - 4).

Epsom was 5 - 9 down after 9 ends, but drew level, 10 - 10 on the 12th end.  The scores were still level, 12 - 12 on the 16th end, but Epsom dropped a single shot on end 17 & 3 shots on the last end.  They lost by 4 shots.

Epsom was 6 - 9 down after 9 ends & 7 - 15 adrift on end 15.  They lost by 9 shots.

Men's ESL League

Epsom Men played away against Purley Bury on Sunday 8th July 2018.  They won on 2 rinks, drew on 1 rink & lost on the 4th.  They won overall 81 - 66 (9 - 3).  This win gives Epsom 9 wins in a row which equals the start to the 2015 season.  It also registers the 8th win in a row against Purley Bury.

Details:

Rink 2  Phil Sims John Hart  John Huxford  Jim Scott  lost 15 - 16

Epsom led 11 - 6 after 10 ends & 15 - 7 after 15 ends.  However, Purley Bury came back strongly winning all the remaining ends.  Going into the last end the scores were level 15 - 15, but Epsom dropped 1 shot.

Rink 3  Howard Ellis  Bob Blaker  Terry Berry  John Warren  drew 21 - 21

Epsom was 10 - 13 down after 10 ends & 12 - 16 behind on the 15th end.  Epsom scored 3 3's on ends 18, 19 & 20 to take a 1 shot lead going into the last end.  They dropped 1 shot to tie the scores.

Rink 4  Dave Pearce  Graham Coleman  Martin Harbottle  John Meningen  won 25 - 15

Epsom was always in control on this rink.  They led 10 - 4 after 10 ends, 17 - 11 after 15 ends & went on to win by 10 shots.

Rink 5  Stefan Tomm  Keith Roberts  Simon Meller Peter Miller  won 20 - 14

Epsom held a 1 shot lead, 8 - 7 after 10 ends, but they went behind 9 - 11 on the 14th end.  Epsom then won the next 6 ends to lead 20 - 11.  They dropped 3 shots on the final end, but won by 6 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 81  Purley Bury 66    Epsom 9 points  Purley Bury 3 points.

This was the 14th meeting between these two Clubs.  Purley Bury joined the League in 2009.  They actually played all the current League teams at the time in the previous season, but the points & scores were not counted.

Epsom have played Purley Bury 14 times won 10, Lost 4.  They have won the last 8 matches & have gained full points twice (2011 & 2017).

The best win was in 2016, 100 – 59 (+41).  The best rink win was in 2016, 26 – 8 (+16).  The most shots in a match was 163, 98 – 65 in 2017.

Purley Bury won the League in 2010 & 2012 with Epsom second on both occasions.  In 2010 Epsom came second by just ½ point.

 

ESL Top Club

Epsom played against Wallington in the ESL Top Club and won the Two Wood Singles, Triples & Fours.  They lost the Singles & Pairs.  This match was decided on the extra end in the Fours.

Details:

Singles:  Dave Pearce  lost 18 - 21

Dave led 14 - 9 on the 10th end & still led 18 - 17 on the 19th end.  However, his opponent finished strongly scoring two 2's to snatch the win.

Two Wood Singles:  Bob Blaker  won 16 - 10

Bob started well  & led 8 - 6 after 10 ends. He kept in front and gained the win by scoring 2 shots on the 19th end.

Pairs:  Keith Roberts  Peter Miller  lost 9 - 33

This was a disappointing performance by Epsom in the Pairs.  They were outplayed all evening losing by 24 shots.

Triples:  Howard Ellis  Terry Berry  John Warren  won 15 - 12

This was a game of two halves with Epsom dominating the first 11 ends when the led 15 - 2.  Epsom failed to score again, but won by 3 shots.

Fours:  Martin Harbottle  Geoff Purrott  John Meningen  Jim Scott  won 21 - 20 (extra end)

Epsom was in total control of this game for 13 ends when they led 17 - 6.  They then lost the next 5 ends dropping a total of 13 shots to go behind 17 - 19.  Two ends later Epsom were ahead again 20 - 19, but Wallington scored 1 shot on the last end to tie the scores.  The extra end proved to be very tense, but Epsom was in control throughout.  Holding shot with the Wallington skip to play his last bowl it all got very exciting.  He just missed the Epsom shot bowl leaving Epsom winners by 1 shot thus winning the match overall.

Ladies' Friendly

Epsom Ladies played at home against Cheam in a Triples match on Thursday 5th July 2018 & lost on both rinks & the match 13 - 28. (15 ends played).

Details:

Rink 3  Audrey Jones  Ruth Baker  Sylvia Smart  lost 7 - 14

Epsom was behind all afternoon.  They were 4 - 10 down after 10 ends & lost by 7 shots.

Rink 4  Sandie Harvey  Gill Sperring  Anne Hoffmann  lost 6 - 14

Epsom on this rink was also 4 - 10 down after 10 ends & lost by 8 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 13  Cheam 28

 

Vilamoura League

Epsom played their first match in this League against Chipstead on Tuesday 3rd July 2018 & won at home & away.  They won overall 44 - 28 (6 - 0).

Details:

Home: Sandra Huxford  Brian Collis  John Huxford  won 23 - 13

Epsom led 7 - 5 after 6 ends, 17 - 9 after 12 ends & won by 10 shots.

Away   Audrey Jones  Andrew Turnbull  Geoff Purrott  won 21 - 15

Epsom led 11 - 7 after 6 ends, but the gap was narrowed to just 1 shot, 15 - 14 on the 12th end.  Epsm went on to win by 6 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 44  Chipstead 28   Epsom 6 points  Chipstead 0 points

 

Chrystie League

Epsom played at home against Pippbrook on Monday 2nd July 2018 and won on 1 rink, lost on the second & won overall 36 - 29 (3 - 1).  This is 5 wins out of 5 for Epsom.

Details:

Rink 2  Bob Lister  Stefan Lukatschat  Phil Sims  Geoff Purrott  lost 18 - 19

As the final score suggests this was a very close game.  The scores were level 7 - 7 after 8 ends, but Epsom went behind 8 - 12 on the 12th end.  Going into the 15th end Epsom were losing 13 - 16, but then scored 4 shots to go ahead.  They immediately lost the lead & finally lost by 1 shot.

Rink 3  Derek Martin Howard Ellis Andrew Turnbull  Bob Blaker  won 18 - 10

Epsom got off to an excellent start & led 10 - 0 after 6 ends.  Leading 12 - 10 on the 12th end they then lost the next 6 ends to still lead by 2 shots.  Epsom finished strongly & won by 8 shots.

Final Score:  Epson 36  Pippbrook 29    Epsom 3 points  Pippbrook 1 point.

 

Epsom v Old Coulsdon – interesting facts

After the outstanding win against Old Coulsdon on Saturday 30th June 2018 you may be interested in the following:-

 

NB The points scoring system was changed in 2014 – original was 1 point for a winning rink, ½ for a drawing rink & 2 points for an overall win. The points were doubled in 2014.

 

The East Surrey League started in 1987.  Epsom played their very first match in this League away at Old Coulsdon.  Epsom lost 70 – 82 (1 – 5).  Graham Pilbrow & Roy Ward, current members, played in this match.

Since 1987 Epsom have played Old Coulsdon 35 times, winning 12, losing 22, drawing 1. The total shots scored for – 2414 & against 2836.  The points are 98½ for & 157½ against.

Epsom won their first away match at Old Coulsdon in 2011, 78 – 75 (4 – 2).

The best win against Old Coulsdon came in 2016 when Epsom won 91 – 55 (+36).  The worst defeat was 51 – 98 (-47) in 1995.  The highest rink win came in 2015, 33 – 6 (+27).  The worst rink defeat was 10 – 40 (-30) in 2005.

The most shots scored in a match came in 2000 & 2016 (78 – 93, 85 – 86) 171 shots.  The record sequence win is 4 – 2014 – 2016.

In 2015 the League was changed to 2 Divisions & Clubs now play on a home & away basis. (previously clubs only played each other once in a season).

In 2018 Epsom’s win v Old Coulsdon was the best points win since 1987, 11 – 1.  It was also the best shots difference win this season for Epsom, +32.

So far this season Epsom have won all 8 League matches.  They have won 23 rinks, lost 6 & 3 drawn.  Epsom have scored 702 shots for, 543 against and currently have 81 points.  Epsom are top of the League as of 1st July 2018.

Since 1987 Epsom have played 393 League matches, won 244, lost 139, drawn 7 & 3 matches have been abandoned.

 

Sutton & District Bowling Association - Yonwin Cup

Epsom Men played at home against Cheam Fields on Sunday 1st July 2018.  They won on 3 rinks, and the match 72 - 39.

This was an excellent performance following on from the League win yesterday v Old Coulsdon.

Details:

Rink 4  Bob Blaker  Geoff Purrott  Terry Berry  John Warren  won 24 - 18

The scores were level 6 - 6 after 5 ends, but Epsom then won the next 5 ends to go ahead 17 - 6.  The rest of the game was evenly balanced, but Epsom ran out winners by 6 shots.

Rink 5  Howard Ellis Graham Coleman  Martin Harbottle  John Meningen  won 22 - 15

Epsom led 14 - 6 after 10 ends and just like rink 4 Cheam Fields came back into the game.  Epsom went on to win by 7 shots.

Rink 6  Stefan Tomm  Pat Buckley  Keith Roberts  Peter Miller  won 26 - 6

Epsom dominated this game with Cheam Fields only scoring on 4 ends.  Epsom led 13 - 2 after 10 ends, 19 - 4 after 15 ends & won by 20 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 72  Cheam Fields 39
