Howard Ellis

Howard will be sadly missed by us all at Epsom Bowling Club. Until he was taken ill Howard played in many games, representing the Club in Bowls England Competitions, Surrey County Bowling Association games & many, many club matches.

He worked tirelessly at the Club, especially during the Covid year being responsible for many aspects of the work involved with the new changing rooms. He spent hours at the Club painting & carrying out maintenance of the premises for many years.  Much of this unknown to many members.

Howard joined Epsom Bowling Club in 2010.  He started bowling at Sunbury Bowling Club.

He was the Property Manager for 2014/2015.  Howard was a member of the squad that won

the East Surrey League in 2015 & he was a member of the team that lost in the Mole Valley Cup Final 2016.

He was a member of the team that lost in the Final of the Yonwin Cup in 2016, was a member of the squad that won the Chrystie League in 2017 & was a member of the squad that won the Vilamoura Mixed League in 2017.

Sadly Howard passed away on Wednesday 8th March 2023.

Howard, it was a pleasure, knowing you may you rest in peace, my friend. Martin Harbottle

I first knew Howard in 1978 when we both worked for the Surrey Ambulance Service at Walton on Thames,  Howard was one of the first ambulancemen to undergo Paramedic training and was always keen to advance the abilities of ambulance staff. He had great sense of humour always spotting the irony or absurdity of a situation, his humour could be quite dark, I'm sure this related to our experiences in the ambulance service. Also a bit of a practical joker of which I was often the victim.

Howard was artistic and very good with his hands at making and fixing things.

He liked a good Single Malt Whiskey as well a cigar which he gave up in later years.

He liked walking I often used to go with him, I think he walked most of the Isle of Wight

Howard always liked sport and used to play a bit of football and golf when he was younger, he completed the London to Brighton cycle ride a few times.

As you know Howard was married to Martine and they have a daughter Jessica, He had a brother Bernard (deceased) and two sisters, he enjoyed family holidays particularly around England and especially the Isle of Wight, we joined him on many trips.

He was a good and loyal friend for many years

History of the Eric Hingston Cup

Eric was a member of Epsom Bowling Club from 1988 until his death in 2001. He was the Club Treasurer 1989 – 1997. He was also President of King George Field I B C.

In the 1980/1990’s during the winter months Epsom had several fixtures with Indoor Bowling Clubs.  Even travelling to as far as Brighton & had in some years had 8/10 fixtures.

One of these was at King George Field Indoor Bowling Club & our first recorded fixture was in 1985.

Most of the Epsom players at this time did not belong to Indoor Clubs, but saw these games as an opportunity to experience Indoor Bowling.

After Eric passed away his wife Ivy donated a Cup to be competed for when Epsom played King George Field I B C – appropriately named ‘The Eric Hingston Cup’.

Since 2001 there have been 13 meetings between the Clubs with Epsom winning on just 2 occasion (59 – 57).  The wins came in 2013 & 2022.

In 2001 & for a few more years the game involved 7 rinks which certainly stretched Epsom Bowling Club – hence the results. It should be noted that all the King George Field members were all regular Indoor players.

For some reason unknown the last time this fixture took place was in 2014 & involved just 3 rinks.
