Vera Deane

Most of our current members will not have known Vera.  She was a very well known Lady in Epsom, particularly for Bowls.  She played regularly for Surrey County Bowling Association and achieved. many successes at Club Level.  She was always immaculately dressed & was hardly ever seen without her bowling hat. (the hat and skirt length when playing for Surrey was strictly adhered to).

She worked tirelessly in the Community and for all the work she did at St Martha on the Hill Church Guildford. she received Maundy Money from the Queen at Guildford on Thursday 13th April 2006. (it is interesting to research Maundy Money on the Internet).

Vera was Chairman of the Ladies’ Section from 1989 to 1994.

She was Captain in 1972 - 1975 & was a Club Vice President.

Vera started work in the Official Solicitor's Department, in the Strand. After her marriage she left the Law Courts to live in Epsom. At the time she was a keen tennis player. Her neighbours played bowls & she took up the game after her husband, Gordon brought home a set of bowls. Vera started bowling at Epsom Court. In 1958 she joined Ewell Ladies & she won the Junior Singles in her first year. She won the Championship, Handicap & Two Wood Singles in 1962. Vera gained her Surrey Badge in 1963. In the same year she reached the quarter finals of the Surrey Fours & in 1965 she reached the Semi Finals. Vera was responsible for starting up Epsom Court Ladies B.C. & she joined Epsom Bowling Club in 1966. She won her first of 8 Championship Singles Title in 1969.

Vera was a keen Indoor Bowler and served as President, Captain, Secretary and Delegate for Epsom Ladies who played at the Rainbow Centre. She helped with the setting up of this section.

Vera designed a commemorative tea cloth for the English Women's B.A. at the 8th Women's World Bowls Convention held at Leamington Spa in 1996 & she raised over £30,000 in her time associated with St Martha on the Hill Church, Guildford.
