Sutton & District Bowling Association - Finals played at Chessington on Saturday 23rd September 2023

Ted Peirce Trophy

Keith Roberts v Chris Jones (Epsom Park)  lost 16 - 22

Keith was 6 - 10 down after 10 ends, but drew level 14 - 14 on end 16. He lost by 6 shots after 21 ends.

Ladies' BLESMA Pairs

Fi Drinkall/Mary Green v Amanda Thomas/Shan Maylin (Southey)  lost 14 - 16

The scores were level 5 - 5 after 6 ends, but Epsom lost the next 5 ends to go 5 - 12 down. They came back to within 1 shot (12 - 13) on end 16, but lost by 2 shots.

East Surrey League - Men

Epsom men played the rearranged game against Bletchingley at home on Saturday 16th September 2023.  They won on 2 rinks, drew on the third & won overall 73 - 48 (9 - 1).

Details:

Rink 4  Stefan Tomm Frank Thompson John Warren Les Owen  drew 19 - 19

Epsom led 8 - 6 after 10 ends & 19 - 10 after 16 ends.  They lost the last 4 ends to tie the rink.

Rink 5  Richard Price Mick Cooper David Fearn Wayne Thornton  won 27 - 12

Epsom led 15 - 5 after 10 ends & won the last 5 ends picking up a total of 11 shots to win by 15 shots.

Rink 6  Paul Maskell Phil Sims Keith Roberts Martin Harbottle  won 27 - 17

Epsom were 8 - 9 down after 10 ends, but led 15 - 14 after 15 ends.  They won the last 4 ends picking up a total of 10 shots to win by 10 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 73  Bletchingley 48   Epsom 9 points  Bletchingley 1 point.

Epsom won earlier in the season at Bletchingley 71 - 42 (9 - 1).  This season Epsom have played 16 games, won 10, lost 5 & drawn 1.  They have scored 102 points.

Richard Price played his very first league match for Epsom Bowling Club in this game.  He becomes the 168th member of the Club to play in this league.

 

East Surrey League - Ladies

Epsom ladies travelled to Chipstead to play their league match of the season on Sunday 10th September 2023.  They won on 1 rink, lost on the second & won overall 31 - 27.

Details:

Rink 1 Sandy Cooper Mary Green Fi Drinkall Trish Southgate won 22 - 10

Epsom led 12 - 6 after 7 ends & won by 12 shots.

Rink 2 Penny Payne Frances Suttonwood Sandie Harvey Ruth Baker  lost 9 - 23 (reduced to 9 - 17)

Chipstead were 1 player short on this rink.  Epsom were 5 - 12 down after 7 ends & lost by 14 shots (reduced by one quarter to 8 shots).

Final Score:  Epsom 31  Chipstead 27   Epsom 3 points  Chipstead 1 point

The ladies have played Chipstead 9 times in this league.  They have won 7 & lost  3.

This season they have played 9 matches, won 4, lost 5 with 1 game when the points were shared.  They have gained 18 points for & 22 against. Penny & Mary played in all 10 games.

 

Mixed Friendly

Epsom played at home in a Mixed Friendly Triples match on Saturday 9th September 2023 against Esher. They won on 3 rinks, lost on the 4th & won overall 46 - 27. Because of the intense heat both Clubs agreed to play 10 ends.

Epsom first played Esher in a Mixed Friendly match in 2003.  Since then the Clubs have played each other 19 times.  Epsom have won 16 & lost 3 in this period.

This was the 7th mixed game this season & Epsom have won 6, lost 1, drawn 1 & there has been 3 games cancelled.

Epsom played at home in a Mixed Friendly match on Wednesday 6th September 2023 against Horley.  They won on 3 rinks, lost on the fourth & won overall 63 - 55.

Epsom dropped 10 1's during the afternoon & lost by 16 shots.

Rink 2  Paul Maskell Penny Payne Brian Collis  won 20 - 17

Epsom were 7 - 10 down after 9 ends & 8 - 15 behind on end 13.  However, they won 4 of the last 5 ends outscoring Horley 12 - 2 to win by 6 shots.

Rink 3  Brian Kenyon Janet Newman Mick Cooper  won 16 - 10

Epsom were 2 - 4 down on end 5, but won the next 7 ends to go ahead 14 - 4.  They dropped a total of 6 shots over the next 4 ends, but won the last 2 ends & the rink by 6 shots.

Rink 4  Lynn Phillips David Bragg Frank Thompson  won 22 - 7

Epsom led 15 - 7 after 11 ends & won all the remaining ends to win by 15 shots.

Epsom 63 Horley 55

Did you know

Epsom first played Horley in a mixed friendly match in 2015.  Since then the clubs have played each other 5 times.  Epsom have won 3, lost 2 & 3 games have been cancelled.

This season Epsom have played 7 matches, won 5, lost 1, drawn 1 & there have been 3 games cancelled.

 

Mixed Friendly

Epsom played at home in a Mixed Friendly Triples match on Monday 4th September 2023 against Epsom Park. They won on 2 rinks, lost on 2 rinks & lost overall 51 - 52. It was decided to play 14 ends because of very hot weather.  Epsom lost this match over the last 3 ends across the 4 triples.  They were outscored 11 - 17.

Epsom were 4 - 5 down after 7 ends but led 10 - 9 on end 10. They won 3 of the last 4 ends to win by 4 shots.

Epsom were 6 - 7 down after 8 ends & 8 - 10 behind on end 12.  They dropped 7 shots over the last 2 ends to lose by 9 shots.

Epsom led 9 - 1 after 7 ends, but lost 6 of the last 7 ends to lose by 3 shots.

Epsom led 10 - 2 after 8 ends, lost the last 3 ends, but won by 7 shots.

Did you know

Epsom first played Epsom Park in a mixed friendly match in 2001.  Since then the Clubs have met 19 times with Epsom winning 10, losing 7 & there have been two drawn games.

This was the 6th mixed match game this season.  Epsom have won 4, lost 1 & drawn 1. 3 games have been cancelled.

Wayne & John led 13 – 7 after 10 ends & 20 – 12 after 15 ends. They won the next 4 ends to win by 17 shots (19 ends played).

Wayne won in 2022 & John Hart won the Pairs in 2005/2021 & runner up in 2004/06/07/17.  This was Frank’s & John Savill’s first Pairs Final.

Fi & Janet led 9 – 2 after 8 ends & 17 – 5 on end 13.  They won the last 4 ends to win by 19 shots. (16 ends played).

Fi was runner up in 2021. Janet’s first Pairs Final.  Frances won in 2015. Karen was runner up in 2022.

The scores were level 7 – 7 after 11 ends, but Richard led 15 – 12 on end 19. Richard then went ahead 20 – 16 ahead, but Paul scored 5 shots over the next 3 ends to win by 1 shot.

Richard was runner up in 2019. First final for Paul.

Mary won in 2021/22. Sue won in 2019. Sandra won in 2015/16. Ruth won in 2014/15. Penny & Lynn’s first Triples Final.

Keith’s first Two Wood Final.  Stefan won in 2005 & 2006.

Jim led 8 – 6 after 10 ends & 18 – 9 after 15 ends.  Jim won on the 22nd end by 7 shots.

Richard led 18 – 2 after 13 ends, but Sandy won the next 5 ends to be 9 – 18 down.  Richard won by 12 shots after 20 ends.

This was Sandy’s first singles Final – only the second lady to reach the Final of the Ward Cup & Richard’s first appearance in the Ward Cup.

Fi led 12 – 9 after 12 ends, but Penny took the lead 13 – 12 two ends later. Fi then led 18 – 14 on end 18 & won the last 4 ends to win by 9 shots. (22 ends played).

Fi won in 2021/22. This was Penny’s first Handicap Singles Final.

Wayne dominated this Final.  He led 65 – 35 after 10 ends & 66 – 54 after 14 ends.  He won on end 17.

Wayne won the trophy in 2022.

Fi led 7 – 6 after 10 ends, but the scores were level 10 – 10 on end 10. Fi led going into the last end, but Penny levelled the scores.  Fi won on the extra end. This was the first Two Wood Final for both ladies.

Sue led 14 – 8 after 13 ends, but lost the next 6 ends to go 14 – 16 down.  The scores were level 17 – 17 on end 22, but Liz won the next 4 ends to win by 4 shots. This was Sue’s first appearance in a Final. Liz was runner up in 2022.

Martin & Derek led 12 – 4 after 9 ends & won by 12 shots. This was Wayne & Derek’s first Australian Pairs Final.  Bob lost in 2018/21. Martin won in 2018.

Phil won in 2019. This was Richard’s & Ray’s first Triples Final. Robert was runner up in 2015.

Frank won in 2014/21/22.  John won in 2009 & 2015.

Sue led 7 – 5 after 7 ends, but lost the next 4 ends to go 7 – 9 down. Sue drew level 10 – 10 on end 14 & won the next 6 ends to win by 7 shots. This was the first Final for both ladies in the Two Wood Plate
