Sutton & District Bowling Association - The June Hope Cup

Fiona Drinkall played in the final on Saturday 24th September against Julia Cheeseman (Cheam Fields). She

Details:

Fi started slowly finding herself 3 - 12 down after 8 ends.  She scored 5 more shots & lost 8 - 21.

Did you know

This was the first season that this Competition took part.  It was set up by S&DBA as the equivalent to the Paston Cup which is a men's Competition.

Congratulations Fi for getting to the Final from us all at Epsom Bowling Club.

 

Mixed Friendly

Epsom played at home in the last match of the season against Cheam Fields.  They won on 3 rinks, lost on 1 rink & won overall 70 - 66.

Details:

Rink 2  Penny Payne Sandy Cooper John Warren  won 25 - 15

After 9 ends Epsom led 18 - 6 & went on to win by 10 shots.

Rink 3  Geoff Purrott Trish Southgate Sandie Harvey  won 21 - 15

Epsom led 17 - 3 after 10 ends, but lost the next 4 ends to be just 3 shots ahead (17 - 14).  They won by 6 shots.

Rink 4  John Wellard Sue Carter Mick Cooper  won 15 - 12

The scores were level 7 - 7 after 9 ends & still level, 11 - 11 after 15 ends.  Epsom won by 3 shots.

Rink 5  Sue Needham Karen Wellard John Lystor  lost 9 - 24

Epsom were 1 - 17 down after 8 ends & 5 - 23 behind after 15 ends.  They lost by 15 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 70  Cheam Fields 66

 

Mixed Friendly

Epsom travelled to Merton Park to play a mixed triples match on Saturday 17th September 2022.  They won on 1 rink, lost on 2 rinks & lost overall 45 - 64.

Details:

Rink 2  Richard Price Karen Wellard Sandy Cooper Keith Roberts  lost 10 - 26

Epsom were 4 - 12 down after 10 ends & 6 - 18 behind after 15 ends.  They lost by 16 shots.

Rink 3  Audrey Jones John Lystor John Wellard Trish Southgate  won 19 - 18

The scores were level 8 - 8 after 10 ends, but Epsom were 13 - 14 down on end 15.  Going into the last end they were 17 - 18 down, but scored 2 shots to win by 1.

Rink 4  Paul Maskell Christine Summerfield Penny Payne Mick Cooper  lost 16 - 20

Epsom were 2 - 9 down after 8 ends, but won the next 7 ends to go 12 - 9 ahead.  They dropped 8 shots over the next 2 ends & lost by 4 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 45  Merton Park 64

Did you know

Epsom first played Merton Park in 2016.  Since then the Clubs have played each other 5 times.  Epsom have won 2 & lost 3.  2 games have been cancelled.

 

Ladies' Friendly

Epsom Ladies played their last friendly game against Cuddington on Wednesday 14th September 2022. This was reduced to just 1 triple.  Epsom won 22 - 12

Details:

Rink 5 Sandy Cooper Liz Hind Christine Summerfield won 22 - 12

Epsom were 4 - 5 down after 5 ends, but won the next 7 ends to go 16 - 5 ahead.  They won by 10 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 22  Cuddington 12

 

Vilamoura Mixed League

Epsom played their last Vilamoura game against Wallington on Wednesday 14th September 2022. They lost at home & away & the match 28 - 44 (0 - 6).

Details:

Home:  Brian Kenyon Liz Hind Brian Collis lost 11 - 23

Epsom were 6 - 10 down after 10 ends & 11 - 15 behind on end 15.  They dropped 8 shots over the last 3 ends & lost by 12 shots.

Away: Audrey Jones John Lystor Phil Sims  lost 17 - 21

After 9 ends Epsom were 8 - 13 down, but were level 13 - 13 on end 12.  Going into the last end Epsom were 17 - 18 down, but dropped 3 shots to lose by 4 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 28  Wallington 44  Epsom 0 points  Wallington 6 points

 

Vilamoura Mixed League Summary 2022 (2021 data in brackets)

 11 (11) games were scheduled.  Of these 10 (11) were played.  Epsom won 5 (7), lost 5 (5) 1 cancelled (1) and drew 0 (0)309 (338) shots were scored for and 323 (331) shots against. Epsom gained 34 (30) points.

 Of the 20 (20) rinks played 10 (9) were won 9 (11) lost & 1 (0) drawn.

 In all 16 (21) members played in the Vilamoura League this year. 10 (14) men & 6 (7) Ladies.

 

East Surrey League - Men

The ESL match v Old Coulsdon was cancelled due to the death of the Queen.  It was agreed to share the points.

Summary 2022 (2021 figures in brackets (The 2021/22 seasons matches were reduced to 3 rinks)

16 (16) games were scheduled. 15 were played.  Of these 4 (11) were won, 9 (5) lost and 2 (0) drawn.

775 (944) shots were scored for and 883 (869) against.  Epsom gained 55 (94) points and ended up 8th (3rd) in the League.

Of the 45 (48) rinks played 14 (24) were won and 29 (22) lost.  2 (2) rinks were drawn.  In all 20 (23) members played in the League this year.

Sadly Epsom were relegated to Division 2.

 

East Surrey League - Ladies

Epsom play against Cheam Fields on Saturday 10th September 2022.  They won on 1 rink, lost on 1 rink & won overall 41 - 37 (3 - 1). 

Details:

Rink 4  Penny Payne Sandy Cooper Trish Southgate Sandie Harvey  won 27 - 12

Epsom led 14 - 11 after 10 ends & won the next 7 ends to 27 - 11 ahead.  They won by 15 shots.

Rink 5  Audrey Jones Liz Hind Frances Suttonwood Ruth Baker  lost 14 - 25

Epsom were 0 - 13 down after 8 ends, came back well to be just 2 shots behind (13 - 15) on end 15.  They lost by 11 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 41  Cheam Fields 37   Epsom 3 points  Cheam Fields 1 point.

Did you know

This was the 23rd time that these two Clubs have played in the ESLL.  Epsom have won 7 & lost 16.

This was the last game of the season & Epsom Ladies have played 10 matches, won 4 & lost 6.

 

Men's Friendly

Epsom travelled to Esher to play a Triples match on Saturday 10th September 2022.  They won on all 3 rinks & the match 60 - 38.

Details:

Rink 3  John Wellard Frank Thompson John Hart  won 25 - 13

Epsom led 17 - 4 after 10 ends & won by 12 shots.

 Rink 4  Paul Maskell Richard Price David Fearn  won 20 - 15

The scores were level 8 - 8 after 9 ends, but Epsom led 19 - 9 after 14 ends.  They won by 5 shots.

Rink 5  Brian Kenyon Mick Cooper Brian Collis  won 15 - 10

After 10 ends Epsom were 5 - 6 down.  However, they led 13 - 7 after 15 ends & won by 5 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 60  Esher 38

Paul Maskell played his first Men's Friendly match.

 

Mixed Friendly

Epsom travelled to Horley to play a Triples match on Wednesday 7th September 2022.  They lost on all rinks & the match 43 - 83.

Epsom were 2 - 10 down after 9 ends & lost by 13 shots.

Rink 3  John Lystor Christine Summerfield Fred Read  lost 15 - 24

Epsom led 10 - 4 after 9 ends, but were 11 - 14 down on end 15.  They dropped 10 shots over the last 3 ends & lost by 9 shots.

Rink 5  Elaine Coe Liz Hind Mick Cooper  lost 8 - 23

Epsom were 2 - 12 down on end 9 & lost by 15 shots.

Rink 6  Barry Coe Sandy Cooper Ted Ray  lost 14 - 17

The scores were level 9 - 9 after 9 ends, but Epsom lost by 3 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 43  Horley 83

Did you know

Epsom first played Horley in a mixed match in 2015. In this time the Clubs have played each other 4 times.  Epsom have won 2 & lost 2. Three games have been cancelled in this period.

 

East Surrey League - Mid Week Triples

Epsom travelled to Shirley Park on Tuesday 6th September 2022.  They won on 2 rinks, lost on 1 rink & won overall 57 - 40 (8 - 2). Over the last 5 ends across the 3 rinks Epsom outscored Shirley Park 25 - 10.

Details:

Rink 1  Richard Price John Hart Fred Read  lost 8 - 22

Epsom were 4 - 9 down after 9 ends & 6 - 12 behind after 14 ends.  They lost the last 3 ends losing by 14 shots.

Rink 2  David Fearn Frank Thompson Phil Sims  won 24 - 12

Epsom led 10 - 8 after 9 ends, but were 11 - 12 down on end 13.  They won the last 5 ends scoring a total of 13 shots to win by 12 shots.

Rink 3  John Lystor Mick Cooper Jim Scott  won 25 - 6

Epsom led 5 - 4 after 6 ends & then won the next 6 ends to go 15 - 4 ahead.  They won the last 4 ends to win by 19 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 57  Shirley Park 40   Epsom 8 points  Shirley Park 2 points.

Phil Sims played in his first ESL Triples league game.

 

Summary 2022

This was the last game of the season in this new league.  Epsom have played 8 matches, won 4, lost 4 & conceded 1 game. Nine games were scheduled.  Of these 4 were won, 4 lost & Epsom conceded 1 game. Epsom scored 434 shots for & there were 383 shots against.  Epsom scored 41 points & there were 49 points against.

Of the 24 rinks played 12 were won, 10 lost & 2 drawn. In all 25 members played in this league in 2022.

The best win came in 2 matches - v Cheam (65 - 37, 9 - 1) & Old Coulsdon (66 - 38, 9 - 1).

 

Mixed Friendly

Epsom travelled the short distance to Epsom Park to play a Triples match on Monday 5th September 2022.  They won on 1 rink, lost on 3 rinks & lost the match 47 - 61. They played 16 ends on each rink.

Rink 3  Lynn Phillips John Lystor David Fearn   lost 11 - 14

The scores were level 5 - 5 after 8 ends, but Epsom were 5 - 10 down on end 11.  Epsom then won the next 4 ends to tie the scores 11 - 11. They dropped 3 shots on the 16th end to lose by 3 shots.

Epsom were 5 - 6 down after 8 ends & 5 - 14 behind on end 12.  They won the last 4 ends & lost by 3 shots.

The scores were level 9 - 9 on end 8, but Epsom led 16 - 11 on end 13.  They won by 3 shots.

Epsom were 5 - 8 down after 8 ends & lost by 11 shots.

Epsom first played Epsom Park in 2001 in a mixed match.  Since then they have played each other 19 times wth Epsom winning 10, losing 7 & 2 games were drawn.

This was a very close game with the scores level 13 – 13 on end 16.  The scores were level on end 20, but Penny & David scored 3 shots to win 18 -15. This was a first win for Penny & David in this Competition.

Keith’s team led 12 – 8 after 10 ends but Ted’s team took the lead 14 – 13 after 13 ends.  The scores were level going into the last end & Ted’s team scored 2 shots to win 20 – 18. John Lystor won his first major title at Epsom Bowling Club.  This was Ted’s first Triples win.

Mary’s team led 13 – 4 after 10 ends & 14 – 7 after 13 ends. They scored 11 shots over the next 3 ends & Frances’s team conceded on end 16.  This was Sandy’s 1st win in Club Competitions & Mary’s second Triples win (first in 2021) & Fi’s first Triples win.

Penny led 11 – 5 after 11 ends.  However, Christine won the next 5 ends to level the scores 11 – 11. The scores were again level 14 – 14 on the last end, but Penny won the extra end to win this Competition for the first time.

This was the first appearance for John in a Ward Cup Final & Ted was defending Champion. John led 8 – 5 after 10 ends. On end 15 John led by just 1 shot 11 – 10, then won the next 5 ends to go 20 – 10 ahead.  He won by 9 shots after 23 ends.

 

 

 

Whist

Whist will begin in the Club house on Thursday 6th October 2022.  The cost will be £3.00.

This will be followed by the following dates:

Thursday 20th October, Thursdays 3rd & 17th November & Thursdays 1st, 15th & 19th of December.
