Epsom win Curling Medals at Potters

Sutton & District Bowling Association - Yonwin Cup

Epsom lose yet another Final against Cheam in the Yonwin Cup.  They lost heavily on one rink, lost another & won 1 rink.  They lost overall 51 - 80. This loss was particularly disappointing considering how well Epsom played against Sutton in the Semi Final.

Details:

Rink 2  Howard Ellis  Pat Buckley Andrew Turnbull  David Sowdon   lost 12 - 36

This was a poor performance by Epsom on this rink.  They were 3 - 19 adrift after 10 ends, 5 - 27 behind after 15 ends & finally lost by 24 shots.

Rink 3  Brian Kenyon  John Meningen  Terry Berry  Graham Naish  lost 19 - 26

After 8 ends the scores were level 10 - 10, but Cheam were ahead 15 - 16 on the 15th end. On the 18th end Epsom scored 4 shots to be just 1 shot behind 19 - 20.  However, they lost the last 2 ends to lose by 7 shots.

Rink 4  Keith Roberts  Bob Blaker  Martin Harbottle  Jim Scott  won 20 - 18

After 10 ends Epsom trailed 10 - 16, but drew level 17 - 17 on end 15.  They went on to win by 2 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 51   Cheam 80

Yonwin Facts

Epsom have played Cheam 8 times over the years.  They have won on 4 occasions (once in the Final in 1995) and lost to them in 4 Finals.

Epsom have won the Yonwin Cup on 7 occasions - 1980 (Sutton Common), 1985 (Cheam Village), 1986 ( Auriol), 1987 (Ewell), 1990 (Wallington), 1995 (Cheam) & 2003 (Malden & Coombe).

Epsom have lost 5 Finals - 1982 (Chipstead & Cheam in 2010, 2011, 2012 & 2016).

Epsom got to the 2016 Final without losing a rink - Cuddington 69 - 40, Carshalton 63 - 42 &

Sutton 59 - 36.

The significant appearances in this Competition are:-

Les Owen 55, Martin Harbottle 45, Graham Naish 39 & Jim Scott 31.

Since 1976 Epsom have won 79 games, lost 34 and scored 6318 shots for & 5744 against.

Cuddington & Chipstead have won the Trophy 8 times.

 

Sutton & District Bowling Association - St Raphael Pairs

Sandra & John Huxford played in the Final at Wallington Bowling Club on Saturday 24th September 2016. They played Margaret Webb & Dave Pease (Sutton). They won 21 - 12.  This was the second time that Sandra has won this Competition (won with David Sowdon in 2011).

Details:

Sandra & John were 6 - 8 behind after 10 ends, but drew level 9 - 9 after 12 ends.  The scores were still level, 11 - 11 after 14 ends, but Epsom won the next 5 ends to go ahead 16 - 11. Going into the 20th end Sandra & John led 16 - 12 & when John went to play the last bowl of the end he was 1 shot down.  He played a superb bowl to take out the shot bowl & scored 5 shots.  Sutton conceded on this end leaving Epsom winners by 9 shots.

Sutton & District Bowling Association - St Raphael Pairs

Sandra & John Huxford played their delayed Semi Final at Chipstead Bowling Club on Thursday 22nd September 2016. They played Lynn Donovan (Purley) & Kevin Donovan (Sutton). They won 16 - 10.

Details:

Sandra & John were in control right from end 3 after scoring 5 shots.  They led 11 - 4 after 10 ends and 16 - 5 after 15 ends. The Epsom pair then became stuck on 16 shots, but restricted their opponents to just 1 shot an end.  Their opponents conceded on the 20th end.

Congratulations Sandra & John from everyone at Epsom Bowling Club.

Men Friendly Summary 2016   (2015 figures in brackets )

Of the 15 (11) matches scheduled 14 (11) were played.  Epsom won 14 (6), lost 1 (4).   

47 (44) rinks were played and of these 28 (18) were won, 18 (20) lost and 1 (0) drawn.

The best win came against Oxshott on the 14th September, 86 - 33 (+54).

The best rink win was the 34 – 10 against Oxshott in the same match.

In all 38 (42) members represented the Club in Friendly matches in 2016.

Ladies' Friendly - Survey 2016 (2015 figures in brackets)

Of the 17 (17) scheduled games 10 (14) were played.  Epsom won 5 (6), lost 5 (8), drew 0 (0) and 6 (3) were cancelled.  In total 336 (497) shots were scored for and 319 (458) against.

In all 14 (18) Ladies represented Epsom in the Friendly matches in 2016.

The number of rinks won were 10 (15), lost 12 (14) and drawn 1 (1).

The best match win came against Malden Manor 42 – 23 (+19) and the best rink win was also against Malden Manor on 12th May 29 – 4.

These are the most significant appearances in the Friendly matches by the Ladies:

Sylvia Smart, Ruth Baker & Anne Hoffmann 8, Gill Sperring 7 & Audrey Jones 6.

 

Men's Friendly

Epsom played at home against Leatherhead in a  friendly Triples match on Tuesday 20th September 2016 and won on 2 rinks, lost on the third and won overall 45 - 34.

Details:

Rink 2  Bob Lister  Pat Buckley  John Meningen  won 18 - 7

This rink started well & led 8 - 1 after just 5 ends.  They had a good lead, 13 - 2 after 10 ends, 16 - 6 after 15 ends and won by 11 shots.

Rink 3  David Ganney  Frank Thompson  John Warren  won 17 - 9

This was quite a close game for 10 ends when Epsom led 9 - 5.  However, they had 8 good ends finally winning by 8 shots.

Rink 4  Bill Lawrence  Mike James  Bob Blaker  lost 10 - 18

This rink was behind all afternoon.  They were 6 - 8 behind after 10 ends, but closed the gap to just 1 shot, 10 - 11 after 15 ends.  They finished losing the last 3 ends & lost by 8 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 45  Leatherhead 34

 

Mixed Friendly - Survey 2016  (2015 figures in brackets)

There were 21 (13) games scheduled and 13 (9) played.  Of these 13 (7) were won, 0 (1) lost & 0 (1) drawn. 8 games were cancelled.  1054 (864) shots were scored for and 735 (660) against.

 

The highest winning match score difference was +63 against Box B C on 20th July when Epsom won 138 - 75.  The highest rink win was 33 – 13 against Insurance B A on 15th May. 

 

Of the 51 (42) rinks played 39 (31) were won, 12 (10) lost & 0 (1) drawn.

 

12 (16) Ladies and 32 (32) Men represented the Club in these Mixed Matches and the following are some of the most appearances made this season:-

Mixed Friendly

Epsom played at home against Merton Park in a mixed friendly on Saturday 17th September 2016 and lost on 1 rink, won on 3 rinks & won the match 81 - 54.  Epsom finish the 2016 season having won all 13 matches.

This rink was in control all afternoon.  They led 10 - 2 after 10 ends, 16 - 12 after 18 ends & won by 4 shots.

Rink 2  Vic Phillips  Brian Collis  Bob Lister  Pat Buckley  lost 9 - 17

Epsom was always playing catch up on this rink.  They were 4 - 7 behind after 10 ends, 7 - 16 adrift after 18 ends & lost by 8 shots.

Rink 3  Audrey Jones  Jim Martin  Geoff Purrott  Bob Blaker  won 26 - 11

After 10 ends Epsom led 12 - 4 and continued to play well.  They stretched their lead to 20 - 8 after 15 ends & went on to win by 14 shots.

Rink 4  Mike James  Frank Thompson  Phil Sims  Sandra Huxford  won 28 - 12

Epsom dominated play on this rink all afternoon.  They had a good lead, 13 - 4 after 10 ends and went further ahead 25 - 6 after 15 ends.  They went on to win by 16 shots.

Men's Friendly

Epsom played at home against Oxshott in a  friendly match on Wednesday 14th September 2016 and won on all 3 rinks & won the match 86 - 33. 

Details:

Epsom had a healthy lead 15 - 3 after 10 ends & won 6 of the remaining ends to win by 13 shots.

Rink 3  Mike James  Frank Thompson  Pat Buckley  John Warren  won 27 - 11

After 4 ends Epsom was behind 1 - 3, but then scored a total of 17 shots over the next 8 ends to lead

18 - 3.  They went on to dominate the rest of the game leading 21 - 8 after 15 ends & going on to win by 16 shots.

Rink 4  Ken Lacey  Bill Lawrence  John Hart  Peter Miller  won 34 - 10

Oxshott only scored on 6 ends in this game.  Epsom led 15 - 2 after 10 ends & 22 - 8 after 15 ends.  They scored a total of 12 shots over the last5 ends to win by 24 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 86  Oxshott 33

 

Ladies' Friendly

The Ladies played at home against the Insurance BA on Tuesday 13th August 2016 to play a 3 rink Triples match.  They lost on 2 rinks, won on 1 rink & lost the match 33 - 38.  The Ladies only played 15 ends because of the intense heat.

Details:

Epsom levelled the scores 12 - 12 after 12 ends & went on to win by 3 shots.

Rink 4  Sue Needham  Sandra Huxford  Sylvia Smart  lost 9 - 14

Epsom was behind all afternoon.  They trailed 5 - 10 after 10 ends, 7 - 13 after 13 ends & lost by 5 shots.

Rink 5  Frances Suttonwood  Heather Pigden  Anne Hoffmann  lost 10 - 13

After 10 ends Epsom found themselves 3 - 12 behind, but fought back well getting back to 10 - 12 on the 14th end.  They dropped 1 shot on the last end to lose by 3 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 33  Insurance BA 38

 

East Surrey League Summary for 2016  (2015 figures in brackets)

16 (16) games were scheduled.  Of these 10 (14) were won, 6 (1) lost and 0 (1) drawn.

1333 (1376) shots were scored for and 1187 (1029) against.  Epsom gained 109 (155) points and ended up ? in the League.

The best win was the 100 - 59 (+41) result against Purley Bury on 8th May , and the same shot difference against Shirley Park on 20th August (96 – 55).  The best rink win was in the 37 – 15 (+22) victory in the match against Chipstead on 30th August.

Of the 60 rinks played 34 (48) were won and 27 (15) lost.  3 (1) rinks were drawn.  In all 25 (26) members played in the League this year. The highest match score was 105 – 74 against Chipstead on 30th August.

East Surrey League - Men

Epsom travelled to Old Coulsdon on Sunday 11th September 2016 to play the last game in the League this season and lost on 3 rinks, won on 1 rink & lost overall 85 - 86 (2 - 10).  This was an extremely disappointing result considering how Epsom were placed at 15 ends (66 - 50), 18 ends (80 - 65) & 20 ends (83 - 78) across the 4 rinks.  So it was a case of a last end defeat.

Details:

Rink 1  Frank Thompson  Pat Buckley  John Huxford  David Sowdon  lost 20 - 23

Epsom led 9 - 8 after 10 ends & 15 - 12 after 15 ends.  They dropped 5 shots on end 18 & lost the last 2 ends to lose by 3 shots.

Rink 2  Howard Ellis  Geoff Purrott  Martin Harbottle Peter Miller  lost 18 - 25

This rink got off to an excellent start finding themselves 10 - 1 after just 5 ends.  Old Coulsdon came back well & took the lead 12 - 14 after 12 ends.  Old Coulsdon won 3 of the last 4 ends leaving Epsom losing by 7 shots.

Rink 4  Keith Roberts  Bob Blaker  John Warren  Jim Scott  lost 20 - 26

Epsom led 13 - 10 after 10 ends and 17 - 13 after 15 ends.  Epsom were outplayed over the last 3 ends dropping a total of 11 shots to lose the rink by 6 shots.

Rink 5  John Hart  John Meningen  Terry Berry  Graham Naish  won 27 - 12

This was an excellent performance.  They went into a 11 - 1 lead after 8 ends and dominated the rest of the game.  They led 20 - 10 after 15 ends and went on to win by 15 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 85  Old Coulsdon 86   Epsom 2 points  Old Coulsdon 10 points

Frank Thompson played in his very first East Surrey League match becoming the 153rd member to play in this League.

 

Mixed Friendly

Epsom played at home against Esher in a mixed friendly Triples on Saturday 10th September 2016 and lost on 1 rinks & won on 3 rinks & won the match 73 - 68.  This was the 12th win out of 12 this season.

Details:

Rink 1  Mike James  Heather Pigden  Frank Thompson  lost 15 - 22

After 10 ends the scores were level 10 - 10 & Epsom went ahead 15 - 14 after 15 ends.  Epsom was outplayed over the last 3 ends and lost by 7 shots.

Rink 2  Audrey Jones  Brian Collis  Bob Blaker  won 18 - 16

Epsom was outplayed for most of the afternoon on this rink.  After 10 ends they were 7 - 12 down & 11 - 16 behind on the 15th end.  However, they won the last 3 ends going on to win by 2 shots.

Rink 3  Ruth Baker  Sylvia Smart  Pat Buckley  won 19 - 18

Epsom was 10 - 11 behind on this rink after 10 ends, but went ahead 17 - 12 on the 15th end.  The last few ends were very close, but Epsom won by 1 shot.

Rink 4  Vic Phillips  Anne Hoffmann Derek Hoffmann  won 21 - 12

This was a comfortable win for Epsom.  They led 16 - 8 after 15 ends & despite dropping 4 shots on the last end they won by 9 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 73  Esher 68

 

Ladies' Pairs Final

The postponed Ladies' Pairs Final was played on Friday 9th September 2016 between Ruth Baker/Sandra Huxford (12) & Frances Suttonwood/Sylvia Smart (9).

Details:

After 10 ends Ruth & Sandra had a very good lead 19 - 8 and went further ahead 24 - 14 after 15 ends.

Frances & Sylvia then came back into the game strongly closing the gap to 25 - 20 on the 18th end.  On the 20th end they were just 2 shots behind, 25 - 23, but were beaten 26 - 23 after nearly 4 hours on the green.

 

Mixed Friendly

Epsom played at home against Horley in a mixed friendly on Wednesday 7th September 2016 and lost on 2 rinks & won on 2 rinks & won the match 76 - 67.  This was a case of 'it's not over till it's over' match.  With 1 end to play on all 4 triples Epsom was losing the match by 9 shots.  Rink 1 picked up 2 shots, rink 2 5 shots, rink 3, 5 shots & rink 4, 6 shots.  Epsom remain undefeated this season in mixed friendly matches.

Rink 1  Audrey Jones  Phil Sims  Bob Blaker  lost 12 - 14

This rink started badly being 0 - 7 down after just 5 ends.  They came back well and were 2 shots adrift, 9 - 11 after 15 ends, but despite getting 2 shots on the last end they lost by 2 shots.

Rink 2  Sue Needham  Mike James  John Warren  lost 14 - 31

Epsom struggled all afternoon on this rink.  They were 7 - 17 down after 10 ends and lost by 17 shots.

Rink 3  Jim Martin  Arthur Upward  Bill Lawrence  won 23 - 11

This was a good performance by Epsom on this rink.  They led 13 - 5 after 10 ends, 17 - 10 after 15 ends & won by 12 shots.

Rink 4  David Ganney  Sylvia Smart  Frank Thompson  won 27 - 11

Another very good performance by the Epsom triple.  They started slowly being 8 - 9 behind after 10 ends.  However, they dominated the rest of the game & led 20 - 10 after 15 ends & won by 16 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 76   Horley 67

Men's Handicap Fours

Jim Martin  Derek Cash  George Sperring  Andrew Turnbull (23)

v Peter Miller  Ken Lacey  Keith Roberts  Terry Berry (34)

There was a 11 shot handicap in favour of Andrew's team which in the end proved too much for Terry's team.  After 10 ends Andrew's team led 18 - 11 & 26 - 17 after 18 ends.  They finally won 31 - 17.

This was the first time Jim has won a trophy at Epsom Bowling Club.

Ladies' Handicap Triples

Ruth Baker  Sylvia Smart  Gill Sperring (19) v Audrey Jones  Sandra Huxford  Eileen Mills (20)

This was an epic battle throughout the morning.  The scores were level 11 - 11 after 12 ends, but Eileen's team went ahead, 14 - 13 on the 15th end and maintained the lead from then on finally winning 17 - 15.

Men's Lower Handicap Singles - Derek Martin (5) v Brian Collis (3)

Derek dominated this game from the start.  He led 17 - 7 on the 15th end and completed the win, 23 - 7 on the 18th end.  This win for Derek was after losing twice in this competition - 2010 & 2012.

Ladies' Two Wood Plate - No Competition

100 Up Cup - John Hart v John Warren

After being runner up in 2010, 2011, 2013 & 2015 John Hart was determined to win this trophy for the second time.  He was given a tough game with John Warren leading 81 - 79 after 16 ends.  However, John Hart came back to snatch the win on the 20th end 105 - 95.

Men's Championship Singles - David Sowdon v Terry Berry

This was the second year in a row that Terry had reached the Final (he won it last year).  Terry took the lead 10 - 8 on the 12th end and extended this to 16 - 11 after 17 ends.  David fought back well to narrow the gap to 17 - 18 down on the 23rd end, but Terry finished strongly to win the title for the second time 21 - 17.

Ladies' Championship Singles - Sandra Huxford v Eileen Mills

Appearing in her first Final Sandra was playing a 4 times winner. Sandra led 11 - 8 on the 12th end & went further ahead 18 - 8 on the 17th end.  Eileen came back strongly to narrow the gap to 2 shots, 18 - 16 on the 21st end.  However, Sandra went on to win 21 - 16.

Mixed Handicap Pairs - Frances Suttonwood  Howard Ellis (10) v Janet Newman  Martin Harbottle (14)

This turned out to be a very close contest.  Janet & Martin were defending the title won last year. The scores were level 12 - 12 after 12 ends and 16 - 16 after 18 ends.  On the 20th end Frances & Howard picked up 4 shots & this proved to be the turning point leaving Janet & Martin to get 6 shots to tie on the last end.  They managed 3 shots leaving Frances & Howard winners 22 - 19.

Finals Day Results - Saturday    (handicaps in brackets)

Two Wood Singles - Martin Harbottle v David Sowdon

Martin Harbottle becomes the Men's Two Wood Champion by defeating David Sowdon 16 - 5 (16 ends).  This is the first time Martin has won this trophy (runner up in 2009).  David won the trophy in 2010 & 2012.

Details:

After 8 ends David led 5 - 4, but did not score again leaving Martin winning 16 - 5 after 16 ends.

Men's Triples

David Hutchison, Ken Lacey & George Sperring (20) v James Smart, Arthur Upward & Terry Berry (13)

Details:

George's team had to give Terry's team a 7 shot start.  This proved to be a big hurdle as Terry's team dominated the game winning 26 - 10.  James Smart wins his first Trophy at Epsom Bowling Club. & this was the first Triples win for Terry.

Men's Handicap Pairs - Geoff Benfield & Keith Roberts (11) v Brian Collis & Brian Kenyon (13)

After 10 ends Geoff & Keith were 12 - 6 ahead & still in front 13 - 12 on the 15th end.  The scores were level on the next end and the 2 Brian's went on to win 20 - 16.

Brian Collis wins his first Trophy at Epsom Bowling Club.

Ladies' Handicap Pairs - delayed until next week

Ladies' Two Wood Singles - Sylvia Smart v Sandra Huxford

Sandra was ahead all afternoon.  She led 14 - 8 after 17 ends and won on the 20th end 16 - 11.

Ladies' Junior Singles - Frances Suttonwood v Pat Walmsley

After 8 ends Pat led 10 - 5 and kept a grip on the game to lead throughout.  She led 16 - 11 after 15 ends and won 21 - 11.

Ladies' Handicap Singles - Gill Sperring (8) v Eileen Mills (8)

Eileen went on to win this Trophy for the 4th time. In a very good, close match the scores were level 11 - 11 after 15 ends. Gill then took the lead, but Eileen came back strongly to go on to win 21 - 14.

Men's Handicap Singles - Bill Lawrence (6) v Bob Blaker (7)

This was a keenly contested game.  The scores were level 10 - 10 after 14 ends, but Bill took the lead immediately and stayed ahead throughout the rest of the afternoon going on to win 21 - 15.

Ward Cup (Mixed Singles) - Keith Roberts v Terry Berry

This turned out to be the game of the day.  It took 30 ends to split these two players.  After 15 ends Keith had a good lead 13 - 7, and still ahead 16 - 10 on the 21st end.  The scores were tied, 17 - 17 on the 26th end and still level 19 - 19 on end 29.  Terry scored 2 on the 30th end to win the Trophy for the first time.

Men's Friendly

Epsom played at home against Cheam Fields on Wednesday 31st August 2016 and lost on all 3 rinks & the match 50 - 68.  This was the first defeat this season.

Details:

Rink 1  Frank Thompson  Derek Martin  Bob Blaker  John Hart  lost 19 - 21

Epsom was 10 - 13 down after 10 ends, but immediately took the lead.  Cheam Fields drew level, 16 - 16 on the 15th end & led from then on leaving Epsom losing by 2 shots.

Rink 2  Arthur Upward  Mike James  Ken Lacey  John Meningen  lost 15 - 23

Epsom was 6 - 10 down after 10 ends & further behind 7 - 20 after 15 ends.  Epsom then outscored Cheam Fields 8 - 3 over the last 6 ends, but still lost by 8 shots.

Rink 3  Stefan Tomm  Jim Martin  Phil Sims  Fred Read  lost 16 - 24

Epsom had a poor start on this rink finding themselves 1 - 12 down after 8 ends.  They came back well into the game to be just 2 shots adrift, 16 - 18 on the 19th end.  Unfortunately they dropped two 3's to lose by 8 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 50  Cheam Fields 68

 

East Surrey League - Men

Epsom travelled to Chipstead on Tuesday 30th August 2016 to play the rearranged ESL match.  They won on 3 rinks, lost on 1 rink & won the match 105 - 74 (10 - 2).

Details:

Rink 2  Stefan Tomm  John Hart  John Meningen Peter Miller  lost 18 - 22

Epsom led 10 - 9 after 10 ends, but the scores were level 14 - 14 after 15 ends.  The scores were still level 18 - 18 after 18 ends, but Epsom lost the last 3 ends & the rink by 4 shots.

Rink 3  Brian Kenyon  Bob Blaker  Terry Berry  Graham Naish  won 37 - 15

Epsom had a commanding lead, 20 - 8 after 10 ends & continued to outplay Chipstead.  They led 28 - 15 after 18 ends & won the last 3 ends to go on to win by 22 shots.

Epsom also started well on this rink & led 16 - 4 after 10 ends.  They still led 21 - 8 after 15 ends, but allowed Chipstead back into the game over the last 6 ends.  Epsom were outscored 2 - 12, but still held on to win by 3 shots.

Sutton & District Bowling Association - Yonwin Cup

Epsom Men played at Purley on Sunday 28th August 2016 against Sutton in the Semi Final of the Yonwin Cup.  They won on all 3 rinks winning 59 - 36.  This is the 12th time that Epsom have reached the Final of this Competition (Epsom have won the Cup on 7 occasions).  Epsom have reached the final without dropping a rink in all three matches leading to the Final. This Semi Final was a comprehensive win against a very strong Sutton side.

Epsom struggled for the first half of this game finding themselves 6 - 8 behind after 10 ends.  They then won the next 5 ends scoring a total of 11 shots to go ahead 17 - 8.  Sutton conceded on the 19th end leaving Epsom winners by 10 shots.

Epsom took the lead on the 6th end, 6 - 4 & dominated the game from then on.  They led 8 - 6 after 10 ends, 15 - 9 after 15 ends and with Sutton conceding on the 19th end Epsom won by 8 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 59   Sutton 36

East Surrey League - Men

Epsom Men played away at Croydon on Saturday 27th August 2016 and lost on 3 rinks, drew on 1 rink & lost overall 77 - 87 (1 - 11).  This was a particularly disappointing defeat considering 2 rinks lost by just 1 shot & a 3rd drawing.

Epsom led 8 - 4 after 9 ends, but then dropped 9 shots over the next 2 ends to go behind.  They came back well to lead 18 - 14 after 17 ends.  Going into the last end Epsom led 21 - 18, but dropped 4 shots to lose by 1 shot.

Epsom had a disastrous start finding themselves 0 - 11 down after just 3 ends.  They were still way behind, 9 - 19 after 15 ends.  They finished with a 2 & 5 to lose by 8 shots.

The scores were level 8 - 8 after 9 ends, but Epsom went behind 10 - 16 on the 15th end.  Going into the last end Epsom needed 2 shots to draw, but only got 1 shot to lose by 1 shot.

Epsom led 11 - 8 after 10 ends, but Croydon drew level 14 - 14 after 15 ends.  On the next end Epsom scored 5 shots, but Croydon drew level once again 19 - 19 on the 18th end.  Going into the last end Epsom led 21 - 20, but dropped a single to tie the rink.

Final Score:  Epsom 77  Croydon 87    Epsom 1 point   Croydon 11 points

 

Sutton & District Bowling Association - Delegates Cup

Martin Harbottle loses to Peter Gammage in the Semi Final of the above Competition.

Martin started well going into a 7 - 2 lead after 5 ends.  However, he got stuck on 7 for 9 ends & found himself 7 - 17 down.  He made a slight recovery, but eventually lost 12 - 21.  Congratulations Martin for reaching the Semi Final.

 

Ladies' Friendly

The Ladies travelled the short distance to Epsom Court on Thursday 25th August 2016 to play a 2 rink Triples match.  They lost on both rinks & the match 23 - 36.  It was agreed to play 15 ends only.

Epsom was ahead 10 - 7 after 10 ends, but had 3 bad ends straight away dropping a total of 11 shots.  They did not recover from this set back finally losing by 6 shots.

Epsom was behind all afternoon on this rink.  They were 4 - 15 down after 9 ends & lost by 7 shots.

Epsom Men played at home against Wallington in the rearranged ESL match on Wednesday 24th August 2016 and won on 2 rinks, lost on 2 rinks & lost overall 65 - 80 (4 - 8).  This is a big set back for the Men in this League.

After 10 ends the scores were level 8 - 8, but then Epsom went ahead winning the next 4 ends to lead 13 - 8.  They continued to be in front and won by 4 shots.

This was a story of two halves.  Epsom struggled for 11 ends finding themselves 5 - 15 down.  However, they outscored Wallington 15 - 3 over the remaining ends to secure an excellent result winning by 2 shots.

Rink 3  Stefan Tomm  Geoff Purrott  John Meningen  Peter Miller  lost 12 - 23

The scores were level 7 - 7 after 9 ends and then Epsom went ahead by 2 shots on the next end.  However, they lost the next 5 ends dropping a total of 9 shots to go behind 9 - 16 on the 15th end.  They were well beaten by 11 shots.

Although Epsom led 7 - 6 on the 6th end thinks got worse for the rest of the evening.  After 15 ends they were 11 - 22 adrift finally losing by 10 shots.

Ladies' Friendly

Epsom Ladies played at home against Ashtead in a 2 rink Triples match on Tuesday 23rd August 2016 and won on one rink, lost on the other but won overall 27 - 24.  The match was played over 15 ends.

Epsom had a slow start finding themselves 2 - 4 down after 5 ends & 4 - 8 behind after 10 ends.  They won the last 5 ends outscoring Ashtead 11 - 1 to go on to win by 6 shots.

After a slow start Epsom drew level 8 - 8 on the 10th end.  Ashtead had the better of the remaining 5 ends leaving Epsom losing by 3 shots.

Epsom Men played at home against Shirley Park in the ESL on Saturday 20th August 2016 and won on all 4 rinks and the match 96 - 55 (12 - 0).  This was the 5th win in a row against Shirley Park.

This rink led all afternoon.  They were 11 - 9 up after 10 ends, 16 - 11 ahead after 15 ends & dominated the rest of the game to win by 12 shots.

This was a similar story to rink 1.  Epsom was 7 - 4 ahead after 10 ends, 14 - 7 in front after 15 ends & won by 13 shots.

Rink 4  Brian Kenyon  John Hart  Terry Berry  Graham Naish  won 20 - 15

Epsom got off to a great start & led 10 - 1 after just 5 ends.  However, Shirley Park came back into the game and kept the game very close.  Epsom went on to lead 18 - 14 after 18 ends and despite a few scary moments over the last 3 ends they went on to win by 5 shots.

Rink 6  Howard Ellis  Geoff Purrott  Andrew Turnbull  David Sowdon  won 25 - 14

This was a good performance by this Epsom 4.  They led 14 - 3 after 10 ends, 19 - 8 after 15 ends and finished strongly to win by 11 shots.

Epsom Ladies played at home against Shirley Park in the ESL Saturday 20th August 2016 and won on both rinks & the match 46 - 28 (4 - 0).  This completed the fixtures for the 2016 season.

This was a very close game for 15 ends when the scores were level 12 - 12.  Epsom then dominated the last 6 ends outscoring Shirley Park 10 - 2 to win by 8 shots.

Rink 5  Sandra Huxford  Audrey Jones  Anne Hoffmann  Gill Sperring  won 24 - 14

Epsom Ladies led all afternoon on this rink.  They led 12 - 4 after 10 ends, 17 - 10 after 15 ends and won by 10 shots.

Summary for 2016  (2015 figures in brackets)

There were 8 (8) games scheduled and 7 (8) played.  Of these 3 (2) were won and 4 (6) lost.   253 (361) shots were scored for and 257 (230) against.  One game against Old Coulsdon was conceded.  The Ladies gained 11 (10½ ) points.

Of the 14 (16) rinks played 5 (6) were won, 9 (9) lost.  The best win was 46 – 28 v Shirley Park on 20th August & the best rink win was 22 – 6 against Cheam Fields on the 25th June.

11 (15) Ladies played this year in the League.

Anne Hoffmann, Gill Sperring, Sylvia Smart & Eileen Mills played in all 7 matches. Ruth Baker played in 6 games, Sandra Huxford & Audrey Jones in 5.

Epsom Ladies played away against Caterham in the ESL Thursday 18th August 2016 and won on 1 rink, lost on the second & lost overall 33 - 38 (1 - 3).

The scores were level 3 - 3 after 3 ends, but Epsom then lost the next 7 ends to go behind 3 - 15.  They were still behind 8 - 17 after 15 ends & eventually lost by 8 shots.

Epsom was 3 - 6 down after 6 ends, but won the next 3 ends to go ahead 9 - 6.  After 15 ends Epsom still led by 7 shots (16 - 9), but Caterham came back to be just 1 shot adrift, 16 - 15 after 18 ends.  Epsom had the better of the final ends to win by 3 shots.

Mole Valley Cup - Final

Epsom played against Bookham in the Final of the Mole Valley Cup at Ashtead on Thursday 18th August 2016 and drew on 1 rink, lost on the second & lost overall 29 - 31.

After 7 ends Epsom drew level 7 - 7 and then went ahead 12 - 9 on the 10th end.  Going into the penultimate end Epsom was 16 - 14 ahead, but had a disastrous 14th end dropping 5 shots to go 1 behind 16 - 17.  Epsom managed to draw the rink on the last end.

Rink 4  Brian Kenyon  John Warren Terry Berry    lost 12 - 14

Epsom struggled on this rink throughout the evening.  They were 4 - 13 down after 9 ends, but won the next 5 ends to go just 1 shot behind going into the last end.  The last end proved to be very tense, but Bookham secured 1 shot to win the match.

Epsom played against Ashtead in a Friendly Triples match on Tuesday 16th August 2016 & won on 2 rinks, lost on 2 rinks & won overall 61 - 56.  This makes it 11 wins out of 11 for Epsom Men.

Epsom led throughout the afternoon.  They led 10 - 5 after 10 ends, 14 - 7 after 15 ends & went on to win by 10 shots.

The scores were level, 8 - 8 after 10 ends & still level, 11 - 11 after 13 ends.  Epsom failed to score after this and lost by 7 shots.

Epsom was in full control on this rink for 15 ends when they led 19 - 9.  However, they dropped 6 shots on end 16, but held on to win by 4 shots.

Epsom was behind 6 - 8 after 10 ends, 10 - 13 adrift after 15 ends and lost by 2 shots.

Epsom played against the Surrey Patrons in a Friendly match on Sunday 14th August 2016 & won on 3 rinks, lost on 1 rink & won overall 79 - 71.  This win maintained Epsom's 100% record in Friendly matches being the 10th win this season.

Epsom took the lead for the first time on end 10 going 8 - 6 ahead.  They kept the lead until the 17th end when the Patrons drew level 12 - 12.  Epsom went on to win by 2 shots.

Epsom led all afternoon.  They held a 1 shot advantage, 7 - 6 after 10 ends & 14 - 9 after 15 ends.  They had a healthy lead 18 - 9 after 17 ends, lost the remaining 4 ends, but held on to win by 3 shots.

This was a very close game throughout the afternoon despite Epsom dropping a count of 7 on the 10th end to still be ahead 13 - 12.  After 15  ends Epsom was 3 shots adrift 15 - 18 and going into the last end they needed 4 to draw, but only managed 3 shots.

Epsom stormed into a 11 - 0 start after just 5 ends, but lost the next 5 ends to be 11 - 7 ahead.  The second half was fairly evenly matched, but Epsom went on to win by 4 shots.

Men's East Surrey League

Epsom played at home against Cheam in the ESL on Saturday 13th August 2016 & won on one rink, lost on two rinks and drew on the 4th rink.  They lost overall 76 - 78 (3 -9).  This was the 3rd defeat of the season for Epsom men.

This was a close game with the scores level on ends 11 (8 - 8), 15 (11 - 11).  Epsom was behind 14 - 18 going into the last end, but only scored 2 shots to lose by 2.

Epsom struggled in the first half of this game finding themselves 5 - 10 down after 10 ends.  They were further behind, 6 - 17 after 13 ends, but then scored a total of 9 shots over the next 4 ends to narrow the gap to just 2 shots.  However, Cheam rallied again and Epsom lost by 9 shots.

Epsom led all afternoon on this rink.  They led 13 - 6 after 10 ends, 19 - 12 after 15 ends & went on to win by 9 shots.

Men's Friendly

Epsom played against Carshalton in a Friendly Triples match on Wednesday 10th August 2016 & won on two rinks, lost on two rinks and won overall 68 - 61.  This retains an unbeaten record in Men's matches this season - 9 wins out of 9.

Epsom led all evening on this rink until the very last end.  They led 8 - 5 after 10 ends, 15 - 12 after 15 ends & led by 1 shot going into the last end.  Carshalton scored 2 shots to win by 1 shot.

Rink 2  Bill Lawrence  Arthur Upward  John Huxford  lost 9 - 28

Not a good evening for Epsom on rink 2.  They were 6 - 10 behind after 10 ends, 9 - 14 adrift after 15 ends & were outplayed over the last 3 ends finally losing by 19 shots.

Rink 3  Derek Martin  Andrew Turnbull  Fred Read  won 18 - 10

Epsom led all evening on this rink.  They were 7 - 5 up after 10 ends, 16 - 9 ahead after 15 ends & won by 8 shots.

Epsom started strongly going into a 10 - 1 lead after just 5 ends.  They continued to outplay Carshalton and led 14 - 2 after 10 ends, 24 - 4 after 15 ends & won by 19 shots.

Friendly Match v Kingston Association for the Blind

On Tuesday 9th August Epsom BC offered an invitation to Kingston Association for the Blind (KAB) to a match.
In the sunshine Epsom won on both rinks.

Epsom played well and were 8-1 up after 5 ends. They were 14 – 4 up after 10 ends and finished up after 14 ends winning by 12 shots.
Rink 3 Brian Kenyon Anne Hoffmann, Sandra Huxford Martin Harbottle won 18 - 7
Epsom played well and were 8 – 3 after 5 ends. They were 14 – 5 up after 10 ends and finished up after 14 ends winning by 11 shots.
Kerry for the Blind let the Epsom players try on some specially adjusted glasses so that they could see what it was like to be partially sighted. They all had great difficulty in seeing clearly and bowling.
Everybody said that they enjoyed the day and Epsom have invited KAB next year.

Chrystie League - 2016 Report

This year Epsom won 5 (5), lost 5 (5) & drew 0 (0).  Epsom ended up gaining 20½ (20) points and came 3rd (4th) in the League.

In all 15 (20) members represented Epsom in the Chrystie League in 2016.  The following are some significant appearances:-

Ron Snow 9, Ken Lacey 9, Bob Lister 7, Phil Sims 7 & Mike James 7.

Here are some facts that you may find interesting:- (2015 data in brackets)

Number of rinks won - 8 (10) Number of rinks lost - 9 (10) Number of rinks drawn - 1 (0).  Epsom won 3 (2) of the games 4 - 0 and lost 2 (3) games 4 - 0.

The best match win was 37 - 21 (+16) against Esher on the 27th June and the worst defeat came against Pippbrook 16 – 46 (-28) on the 18th July.

The best rink win was a 23 - 9 victory against Esher on 27th June & the worst defeat on a rink was the 10 – 22 (-12) loss against Leatherhead on 6th June.

The highest total shots scored in a match was on 8th August against Bookham when the combined score was 70 shots (41 - 29).

The lowest combined total of shots scored was 35, (14 - 21), in the match against Esher on 1st August (rain affected).

To date since 2001 Ken Lacey has played in 93 matches, Ron Snow 77, Fred Read 76,

Bob Lister 57 & Bill Lawrence 49.

The number of members who have played in the Chrystie League since 2001 is 49.

A little bit of history:-

Since the Chrystie League began in 2001 Epsom have played 148 matches.  Of these 82 have been won, 64 lost, 5 drawn and 9 cancelled.  On match was conceded in 2016. 4757 shots have been scored for and 4549 shots against.

The highest number of shots scored in a season was in 2004 (386) when Epsom were the Champions.  The most shots scored against in a year was in 2010 - 327.

Since 2001 Epsom have a very good record in this league, winning in 2004, and 2nd in 2003, 2005, 2006 & 2013.

Epsom end the Chrystie League Season with an excellent win at Bookham on Monday 8th August 2016.  They won on both rinks & the match 41 - 29 (4 - 0).

Epsom played Bletchingley away a Mixed Triples match on Sunday 7th August 2016 and won on 3 rinks lost on 1 rink & won overall 69 - 62.  Epsom maintain a 100% record in Mixed matches.  This was the 9th win.

Rink 2  Audrey Jones Bob Lister Brian Kenyon  won 20 - 16

Epsom started well going into a 9 - 0 lead after just 5 ends.  However, Bletchingley won the next 5 ends scoring a total of 13 shots to go ahead 13 - 9. Epsom was still down 12 - 16 on the 14th end, but won the next 4 ends to win by 4 shots.

Rink 3  Sue Needham  Mike James  Ron Snow  won 15 - 14

After 9 ends Epsom was 11 - 5 down, but had a better second half to the game.  They outscored Bletchingley 10 - 3 and snatched a close win by 1 shot.

Rink 4  Brian Collis  Derek Martin  Eileen Mills  won 19 - 16

Epsom started strongly going into a 13 - 5 lead after 9 ends.  Epsom still led 19 - 12 on the 15th ends & despite losing the last 3 ends Epsom won by 3 shots.

Rink 5  David Ganney  James Smart  Frank Thompson  lost 15 - 16

After 10 ends the scores were level 11 - 11 & still level 14 - 14 after 15 ends. Going into the last end Epsom was 2 shots adrift, but only managed to score 1 shot to lose by just 1 shot.
