Celebration Evening

A Celebration Get Together took place at the Club on Friday Evening 18th September 2015.  Several members & friends gathered to celebrate the success of the Club in 2015 - particularly the Men winning the East Surrey League Division 1 title.  The Club was adorned with Welsh Flags - you wonder why?

Ladies' East Surrey League

The Ladies played their last East Surrey League match away at Caterham on Thursday 17th September 2015 ans won on 1 rink, lost on 1 rink & lost overall 31 - 36 (1 - 3).

Details:

Rink 1  Ruth Baker  Pat Walmsley  Anne Hoffmann  Gill Sperring  lost 12 - 19

The Ladies started well & led 7 - 1 after 5 ends.  However, they soon fell behind 7 - 9 after 10 ends & further adrift 9 - 14 after 15 ends and went on to lose by 7 shots.

Rink 2  Sylvia Smart  Ruth Nixon  Heather Pigden  Lyz Warren  won 19 - 17

Epsom started really slowly finding themselves 5 - 15 behind after 13 ends.  However, they came back strongly over the next 8 ends out scoring Caterham 14 - 2 to complete an excellent fight back by winning by 2 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 31  Caterham 36  Epsom 1 point  Caterham 3 points.

 

Summary for 2015  (2014 figures in brackets)

 

There were 8 (8) games scheduled and 8 (8) played.  Of these 2 (6) were won and 6 (2) lost.   361 (267) shots were scored for and 230 (325) against.  The Ladies gained 10½ (26) points.

Of the 16 rinks played 6 (14) were won, 9 (2) lost and 1 (0) drawn.  The best win was 48 – 22 v Wallington on 1st August & the best rink win was 32 – 14 against Horley on the 7th June.

15 (13) Ladies played this year in the League.

Lyz Warren, Anne Hoffmann, & Gill Sperring played in all 8 matches.  Eileen Mills & Ruth Baker 7, Jane Wheeler 6 & Heather Pigden 5.

 

Ladies' Friendly Matches Summary 2015 (2014 figures in brackets)

Of the 17 (17) scheduled games 14 (14) were played.  Epsom won 6 (9), lost 8 (5), drew 0 (0) and 3 (3) were cancelled.  In total 497 (583) shots were scored for and 458 (456) against.

In all 18 (20) Ladies represented Epsom in the Friendly matches in 2015.

The number of rinks won were 15 (19), lost 14 (12) and drawn 1 (1).

The best match win came against Bookham 57 – 23 (+34) and the best rink win was against Malden Manor on 12th May 31 – 6.

These are the most significant appearances in the Friendly matches by the Ladies:

Lyz Warren 10, Audrey Jones & Heather Pigden 9, Sylvia Smart 8, Ruth Nixon & Gill Sperring 7 & Ruth Baker 6.

 

Mixed Friendly Matches Summary 2015 (2014 figures in brackets)

There were 13 (12) games scheduled and 9 (12) played.  Of these 7 (10) were won, 1 (2) lost & 1 (0) drawn. 864 (1274) shots were scored for and 660 (773) against.

The highest winning match score difference was +48 against Esher on 5th September when Epsom won 121 - 73.  The highest rink win was 39 – 8 against Popes Mead on 31st May. 

Of the 42 (55) rinks played 31 (36) were won, 10 (17) lost & 1 (2) drawn.

17 (21) Ladies and 37 4 (37) Men represented the Club in these Mixed Matches and the following are some of the most appearances made this season:-

Ladies:  Audrey Jones 8, Lyz Warren 7, Anne Hoffmann 5.

Men:  Derek Hoffmann & Mike James 8,  Tony Dunn 7, Bill Lawrence & Derek Jones 6.

 

Men's Friendly Matches Summary 2015 (2014 figures in brackets)

Of the 11 (11) matches scheduled 10 (11) were played.  Epsom won 7 (6), lost 3 (4).   

38 (44) rinks were played and of these 18 (28) were won, 20 (14) lost and 0 (2) drawn.

The best win came against Surrey Patrons on the 9th May, 113 – 89 (+24).

The best rink win was the 35 – 10 against Reigate Priory on 25th April.

In all 42 (48) members represented the Club in Friendly matches in 2015.

Ladies' Friendly

Epsom Ladies played at home against the Insurance on Tuesday 8th August 2015 & won on one rink, lost on 2 rinks & lost overall 42 - 54.

Details:

Rink 2  Frances Suttonwood  Anne Hoffmann  Eileen Mills  lost 13 - 22

Epsom was behind all afternoon.  They were 8 - 14 behind after 10 ends, 11 - 18 in arrears after 15 ends & lost by 9 shots.

Rink 3  Sylvia Smart  Ruth Nixon  Sandra Huxford  won 23 - 12

After 4 ends this rink were 0 - 7 down, but won the next 10 ends scoring a total of 22 shots to go ahead 22 - 7 on the 14th end.  They went on to win by 11 shots.

Rink 4  Audrey Jones  Mary Bragg  Gill Sperring  lost 6 - 20

Epsom was outplayed on this rink when they were 4 - 11 down after 10 ends, 6 - 16 behind after 15 ends and lost by 14 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 42  Insurance 54

 

Ladies' Friendly

Epsom Ladies played away against Cuddington on Thursday 10th August 2015 & won on one rink, lost on the other & lost overall 28 - 36.  Unfortunately the Ladies could only field 4 players so the Men helped out.

Details:

Rink 3  Audrey Jones (Eddie Needham)(Trevor Marvell) Sylvia Smart  won 17 - 12

The rink took the lead, 8 - 7 after 10 ends and went on to win by 5 shots.

Rink 4  Pauline File  Sue Needham (Derek Jones) (David Ruston)  lost 11 - 24

This rink was outplayed all afternoon.  They were 4 - 13 down after 10 ends and lost by 13 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 28  Cuddington 36

 

Men's Friendly

Epsom Men played their last Men's Friendly match of the season away at Leatherhead in a Triples match on Tuesday 15th September 2015 and won on 2 rinks, lost on 2 rinks but lost overall 63 - 67.

Details:

Rink 2  Arthur Upward  Stefan Tomm  John Warren  won 20 - 10

After 11 ends the scores were level 9 - 9.  However Epsom had the better of the rest of the game going on to win by 10 shots.

Rink 3  Bill Lawrence  Howard Ellis  Tony Dunn  lost 14 - 17

Epsom led 9 - 6 after 10 ends, but dropped a count of 7 on the next end.  This became the deciding factor in the outcome leaving Epsom losing by 3 shots.

Rink 4  Derek Jones  David Rundle  Fred Read  won 21 - 16

Epsom got off to a good start leading 16 - 6 after 10 ends.  Leatherhead narrowed the gap to 17 - 16 on the 14th end, but Epsom won the last 4 ends to win by 5 shots.

Rink 5  Mike James  Derek Hoffmann  Eric Brown  lost 8 - 24

Epsom led 5 - 3 after 6 ends, but then lost the next 7 ends dropping a total of 18 shots to go behind 5 - 21.  Epsom scored 3 more shots and lost by 16 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 63  Leatherhead 67

Men's Friendly

Epsom Men played away at Oxshott in a Triples match on Wednesday 9th September 2015 and won on 2 rinks, lost on 2 rinks but won overall 80 - 69.

Details:

Rink 2  Geoff Benfield  Ron Snow  John Warren  won 23 - 18

After 10 ends Epsom led 17 - 10 after 11 ends, but dropped a total of 8 shots over the next 4 ends to go behind 17 - 18.  Epsom fought back well winning the last 3 ends to win by 5 shots.

Rink 3  Bill Lawrence  Derek Hoffmann  Bob Blaker  lost 19 - 20

Epsom led 11 - 8 after 8 ends, but went behind 11 - 17 after 13 ends.  Going into the last end they trailed by 6 shots and scored 5 shots to lose by just 1 shot.

Rink 4  Derek Jones  Eric Brown  Brian Kenyon  won 21 - 13

Epsom was in a strong position after 12 ends when they led 14 - 5.  Oxshott narrowed the gap to 2 shots on the 14th end, but Epsom finished strongly winning by 8 shots.

Rink 5  Mike James  Guest  Phil Sims  lost 17 - 18

After 14 ends Epsom was 17 - 8 ahead, but had a poor finished allowing Oxshott to snatch a 1 shot win.

Final Score:  Epsom 80  Oxshott 69

 

East Surrey League - Men

Epsom Men played their very last East Surrey League game at home on Sunday 6th September 2015 against Old Coulsdon and won on 2 rinks, lost on 2 rinks and won the match 84 - 58 (8 - 4).  A full report appears below.

Details:

Epsom led 10 - 6 after 10 ends and went further ahead 16 - 8 after 15 ends.  They won by 11 shots.

Rink 3  Geoff Purrott Howard Ellis  John Huxford  David Sowdon  won 31 - 6

Epsom dominated this rink.  They led 14 - 2 after 10 ends, 19 - 5 after 15 ends and won by 25 shots.

Rink 4  Mick Gray  John Hart  Terry Berry  Graham Naish  lost 15 - 18

Epsom started slowly finding themselves 6 - 8 down after 9 ends.  They immediately picked up a count of 6 to go ahead.  After 16 ends Epsom led 15 - 12, but dropped 6 shots over the next 5 ends to lose by 3 shots.

Rink 5  Tony Dunn  John Warren  Martin Harbottle  Jim Scott  lost 15 - 22

Epsom was outplayed for 14 ends on this rink when they were 5 - 19 down.  However, they had 4 good ends scoring a total of 10 shots to narrow the gap to 4 shots.  Unfortunately they could not maintain this comeback & lost by 7 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 84   Old Coulsdon 58   Epsom 8 points  Old Coulsdon 4 points

East Surrey League Report 2015

Epsom became the first East Surrey League Champions of the newly formed two division set up in 2015. Epsom are Champions of the First Division.
This was the first time that Epsom Bowling Club had won the East Surrey League since it was formed in 1987. During these years Epsom have finished second on four occasions - 1988 (8 Clubs), 2010 (15 Clubs), 2012 (15 Clubs) & 2014 (14 Clubs).
During the Season Epsom played 16 matches won 14, Lost 1 & Drew 1. They scored 155 points.
They scored 1376 shots for & 1029 against. The shots for were 36 less than that achieved in 2010 (1412).
The number points gained, 155 broke the record achieved in 2014 (135)
During the season 48 rinks were won, 15 lost & 1 drawn.
The number of rinks won, 48 beat the record 42 rinks won in 2010.
Five matches were won 12 - 0 being 1 short of the 6 achieved in 2014.
The best win was against Shirley Park on 12th June 2015 when Epsom won 113 - 37 (12 - 0). This was a remarkable score line as Epsom have played against Shirley Park 30 times since the League began & only won 14 of these matches. The highest rink win was also recorded in this match - 39 - 6.
A total of 26 members represented Epsom in 2015. These are (appearances in brackets):-

During the season several milestones were passed by individuals regarding appearances.

The following have passed 200 appearances:

Since the League began in 1987 Epsom have played 352 matches, won 216, Lost 127, Drawn 7 & there have been 3 matches cancelled. 150 members from Epsom Bowling Club have represented the Club since 1987.

 

Mixed Friendly

Epsom travelled to Esher to play in a 6 rink Triples Mixed Friendly match on Saturday 5th September 2015 & won on all 6 rinks and won the match 121 - 73.

After 10 ends the scores were level 10 - 10, but Epsom dominated the rest of the game running out winners by 16 shots

Rink 2  Barry File  Ruth Nixon  Eric Brown  won 16 - 9

This was a closer game with Epsom leading 8 - 7 after 10 ends & winning by 7 shots

Rink 3  Arthur Upward  Heather Pigden  Bob Blaker  won 21 - 10

Epsom found themselves 1 - 9 down after 7 ends, but came back well to win by 11 shots.

Rink 4  Sue Needham  Derek Hoffmann Tony Dunn  won 20 - 12

Epsom had a commanding lead, 16 - 3 after 10 ends & won by 8 shots.

Rink 5  Audrey Jones  Mike James  Ron Snow    won 16 - 14

A close game on this rink with Epsom winning 8 - 7 after 10 ends & winning by 2 shots.

Rink 6  Pauline File  David Ganney  Brian Kenyon  won 20 - 16

A close game for 10 ends when Epsom led 11 - 9.  They went on to win by 4 shots.

Final Score:    Epsom 121  Esher 73

 

Mixed Friendly

Epsom travelled to Horley to play in a Mixed Friendly match on Wednesday 2nd September 2015 & won on 3 rinks, lost on 1 rink and won the match 88 - 60.

Epsom led 12 - 8 after 10 ends and 17 - 11 after 15 ends and went on to win by 9 shots.

After 10 ends Epsom led 10 - 6 after 10 ends & 16 - 9 after 15 ends.  They outplayed Horley over the remaining ends going on to win by 16 shots.

Rink 3  Mike James  Derek Hoffmann  Eileen Mills Brian Kenyon    won 23 - 16

After 10 ends Epsom was 7 - 9 down, but had 4 good ends to go ahead 18 - 9 after 14 ends.  Epsom went on to win by 7 shots.

Rink 4  Ruth Nixon  Phil Sims  Roy Ward  Eric Brown  lost 15 - 19

Epsom started well and led 10 - 8 after 12 ends.  Horley had the better of the rest of the game leaving Epsom losing by 4 shots.

Final Score: Epson 88  Horley 60

 

Ladies' Friendly

The Ladies played away at Carshalton Beeches on Tuesday 1st September 2015 in a 2 rink Triples.  They lost on both rinks & the match 27 - 34.

Details:

Rink 3  Pat Walmsley  Jan Allum  Lyz Warren  lost 16 - 17

The scores were level 6 - 6 after 10 ends, but Epsom went ahead 13 - 7 after 13 ends.  Epsom let things slip over the remaining ends to lose by 1 shot.

Rink 4  Sylvia Smart  Gill Sperring  Heather Pigden  lost 11 - 17

Epsom was behind all afternoon on this rink.  They were 7 - 8 down after 10 ends, 11 - 14 adrift after 15 ends finally losing by 6 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 27   Carshalton Beeches 34

 

Club Finals - Sunday

Men's Handicap Singles - Mick Gray (10) v John Warren (9)

After 10 ends Mick trailed by 1 shot 10 - 11.  The scores were level 14 - 14 after 15 ends, but Mick went on to win 21 - 15.  Mick retains the title having won last year.

Men's Lower Handicap - Ron Harsum  (1) v David Ganney (5)

Ron dominated this game.  He led 14 - 2 after 10 ends & 18 - 8 after 15 ends.  He won 21 - 8.

Men's Handicap Fours - Vic Phillips/Roy Ward/Andrew Turnbull/Les Owen

                                         v Mike James/Sid Bailey/Bob Blaker/Terry Berry

After 10 ends Les's side were 7 - 13 down, but came back to be 1 shot down, 14 - 15 after 15 ends.  They were outplayed over the remaining ends losing 15 - 25.  Mike & Terry won the Fours for the first time.

Mixed Pairs - Janet Newman/Martin Harbottle v Frances Suttonwood/Howard Ellis

Janet & Martin were in control all morning.  They led 22 - 10 after 10 ends, 27 - 12 after 15 ends going on to win

33 - 19.

Ladies' Handicap Triples -Ruth Baker/Jan Allum/Sandra Huxford v Audrey Jones/Jane Wheeler/Lyz Warren

This was a very close game with Sandra's team leading 9 - 5 after 10 ends & 13 - 8 after 15 ends.  Lyz's team came back well, but Sandra's team won 14 - 13.  This was the first time Ruth & Sandra had won the Triples.

100 Up Cup - David Sowdon v John Hart

This was also a close match with John leading 51 - 49 after 10 ends. John still led 87 - 83 after 17 ends, but Dave finished well to snatch a victory 104 - 96.

Ladies Championship Singles - Anne Hoffmann v Jane Wheeler

Anne struggled to get into this game scoring just the 1 shot on the second end losing 1 - 21. Jane won the Championship for the first time.

Men's Championship Singles - Les Owen v Terry Berry

Les led 6 - 4 after 8 ends, but Terry scored a total of 11 shots over the next 5 ends to go ahead 15 - 6.  Les came back well to level the scores 15 - 15, but Terry went on to win the Championship for the first time 21 - 15.

Ladies Two Wood - Ruth Baker v Ruth Nixon

Ruth Nixon dominated this game when she led 13 - after 10 ends.  She went on to win the trophy for the first time 17 - 4.

 

Club Finals - Saturday

The first day of the Finals were held on Saturday 29th August 2015.  Some very close games took place with many members winning trophies for the first time.

Details of matches played:

Men's Handicap Pairs - Robert York/Andrew Turnbull (9) v Geoff Benfield/Terry Berry (12)

After 10 ends Robert & Andrew led 9 - 6, but lost the lead on the 16th end 11 - 14.  They came back well winning the next 4 ends to go ahead 16 - 14 with 1 end to play.  They dropped just 1 shot to win a very close game by 1 shot - 16 - 15.

Robert & Andrew won their very first titles at Epsom Bowling Club.

Men's Two Wood Singles - David Sowdon v John Warren

After 7 ends John led 6 - 4 & kept the lead for the rest of the game.  He led 13 - 8 after 15 ends completing the win 16 - 11 after 20 ends.

This was the first time that John had won the Two Wood Singles.

Ladies' Two Wood Plate - Eileen Mills v Lyz Warren

This was a very close game.  After 6 ends the scores were level 6 - 6 & still equal, 9 - 9 after 12 ends.  On the 21st end Eileen scored 2 shots to put the game into an extra end.  Lyz got the shot to win the Two Wood Plate for the first time.

Ladies' Handicap Pairs - Sylvia Smart/Sandra Huxford v Frances Suttonwood/Jane Wheeler

After 10 ends Sylvia & Sandra led 9 - 8, fell away to allow their opponents to go ahead 18 - 11 after 15 ends.  They then won the next 4 ends to lead 19 - 18.  The scores were level 19 - 19 going into the last end when Frances & Jane got the shot to win 20 - 19.

Frances won her first Title at Epsom Bowling Club.

Men's Handicap Triples - Robert York/David Ruston/George Sperring (17)

                                           v Mike James/David Ganney/John Warren (18)

After 11 ends the scores were level 9 - 9, but George's team went ahead 13 - 10 after 15 ends.  On the 17th end the scores were again level and on the final end George made a no end.  On the replayed end John's team got the 1 shot for a close win 16 - 15.

Mike James & David Ganney won their first Trophy at Epsom Bowling Club.

Ward Cup - Les Owen v John Hart

Les got off to a good start & led 12 - 3 after 8 ends.  However, John came back well to draw level 12 - 12 after 14 ends.  Les immediately picked up a count of 4 and went on to win 21 - 15.

Ladies' Handicap Single - Sandra Huxford (6) v Gill Sperring (8)

Sandra was 6 - 7 down after 10 ends, but went ahead 13 - 7 after 15 ends.  Gill drew level 17 - 17 after 24 ends, but Sandra held her nerve to win 21 - 19 after 27 ends.

Ladies' Junior Championship - Ruth Baker v Frances Suttonwood

Frances got off to a good start & led 7 - 0 after 4 ends.  Ruth won the next 4 ends to go ahead 11 - 7.  She extended this lead to 19 - 9 after 12 ends and won 21 - 13.

This was the first time that Ruth had won this Competition.

 

President's Team v Secretary's Team

This Annual match took place on Sunday 23rd August 2015.  Twenty six members turned up to play and the President's team won on 2 rinks, lost on 2 rinks & won overall 69 - 61.

The President's team were ahead all afternoon.  They led 15 - 9 after 10 ends going on to win by 7 shots.

              v David Rundle  Sandra Huxford  John Warren

The Secretary's team dominated this game.  They led 16 - 2 after 10 ends & won by 10 shots.

Rink 4  Brian Collis  Heather Pigden  Derek Hoffmann  Eric Brown    lost 15 - 16

              v Mike James  Ken Lacey  Tony Dunn  Lyz Warren

The President's team held a healthy lead, 11 - 6 after 10 ends, but the Secretary's team came back well to snatch a 1 shot victory.

Rink 5  Bill Lawrence  Anne Hoffmann  Brian Kenyon    won 21 - 9

              v Audrey Jones  Vic Phillips  Ron Snow

The President's team like rink 4 also led 11 - 6 after 10 ends and continued to play well to win by 12 shots.

Final Score:  President's Team 69    Secretary's Team 61

 

East Surrey League - Men

Epsom Men win the East Surrey League title by beating Purley away on Saturday 22nd August 2015.

This is a historic day for the Epsom Men as this is the first time they have won the League since it was formed in 1987.

Epsom won 85 - 67 (12 - 0).

This was not a clear victory until late on the afternoon.  Some very short finger nails were created across the rinks for quite a period as Purley made Epsom fight hard for every shot.

Details:

Rink 1  Brian Kenyon  Peter Miller  George Sperring  Les Owen  won 21 - 13

Epsom got off to a good start and led 13 - 6 after 10 ends.  They were still 9 shots ahead (18 - 9) after 15 ends & went on to win by 8 shots.

Rink 3  Tony Dunn  Bob Blaker  John Huxford  David Sowdon  won 22 - 18

This was a fiercely contested game.  Epsom led 11 - 8 after 10 ends, but Purley drew level 16 - 16 after 16 ends.  The last 5 ends were very tense, but Epsom held on to win by 4 shots.

Rink 4  David Bragg  John Hart  Terry Berry  Graham Naish  won 20 - 19

Epsom was in control for 13 ends when they led 13 - 9.  However, they lost the next 4 ends to go behind 13 - 18.  Epsom pulled back to be 17 - 18 down on the 19th end and went into the last end 2 shots adrift.  Graham played an excellent bowl to secure 3 shots for a very close victory.

Rink 5  Mick Gray  John Warren  Martin Harbottle  Jim Scott  won 22 - 17

Epsom stormed into a 11 - 0 lead after just 6 ends, Purley bounced back to be 1 shot down (11 - 10) on the 10th end.  On the 15th end Epsom led 17 - 12, but Purley came back again strongly to be just 1 shot down going into the last end.  On the final end Jim played a great bowl to pick up 4 shots to enable the rink to win by 5 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 85  Purley 67   Epsom 12 points  Purley 0 points

With one more match to play ( v Old Coulsdon)  Epsom cannot be caught on points so win the title for the first time.

Congratulations to all 26 Men who played in the League this season.
