Finals Weekend 2012

 

Sunday 2nd September 2012 - Morning Session

 

Men’s Handicap Triples Bob Blaker/David Bragg/Ron Mew v Howard Ellis/Ron Snow/Graham Naish
This was Bob & Graham’s second Final of the weekend and David’s third. Graham was looking to defend the title. Ron was appearing in his third Final of the Triples having won in 2008 & lost in 2006.
This turned out to be a terrific battle with some excellent bowling throughout. After 13 ends Graham’s team led 14 - 13, but dropped 5 shots on the next end. From then on it was a very tight game and going into the last end Graham was 17 - 19 down but managed to level the game 19 - 19. Ron won the toss for the extra end and decided to go first. It turned out to be a very tense end with Ron’s team scoring 1 to win a memorable game 20 - 19.

Ladies’ Junior Championship Mary Bragg v Janet Newman
Mary was playing in the second of her three finals. Janet was appearing in her second Final at Epsom Bowling Club having won the Mixed Pairs in 2010.
What a game this turned out to be with both Ladies playing some very good bowls. After 15 ends the scores were level 10 - 10, but then Janet went ahead and kept the lead right up to the 28th end. On end 29 Mary secured 3 shots to level the game 20 - 20. Mary managed the 1 shot to win an epic battle 21 - 20.

Ladies’ Handicap Triples Sue Needham/Anne Hoffmann/Marilyn Walsh v Pauline Devereux/Lyz Warren/Jan Allum
Several Ladies had appeared in the Final of the Triples before. Notably Jan whose 7th appearance this was. She won the title in 1998, 199, 2000 & 2003 & was Runner Up in 2010 & 2011. Sue was looking to make the third win in 3 years. Unfortunately Heather Pigden had a fall and hurt her arm before the game so Pauline came in as a substitute. After 7 ends the scores were level 5 - 5, but Marilyn’s team took control and kept the lead right to the end when they won 20 - 10 after 17 ends.

 

Sunday 2nd September 2012 - Afternoon Session

Ladies’ Two Wood Plate Mary Bragg v Maggie O’Sullivan
Playing in her 3rd Final Mary took on the 2010 Ladies’ Championship winner, Maggie. Mary had a bad start and found herself 15 - 0 down. She recovered and scored a few shots, but Maggie eventually won 18 - 6 after 16 ends.

Mixed Singles (Ward Cup) Graham Pilbrow v John Hart
For Graham this was his 10th Final having won it on 7 occasions. This was John’s first appearance in the Ward Cup Final.
John got off to an excellent start and led 12 - 4 after 10 ends and 16 - 7 after 15 ends. Graham came back well into the game and scored 9 shots over ends 17 - 22 to make the score 15 - 19 in John’s favour.
On end 23 the score was 19 - 17 to John, but Graham finished with two excellent ends scoring a total of 5 shots to win the title for the 8th time.

Ladies’ Championship Singles Marilyn Walsh v Lyz Warren
This was the first Championship Final for both two Ladies. This was the 5th game of the weekend for Lyz & Marilyn’s second. Marilyn started very well and led 7 - 5 after 5 ends, 15 - 9 after 10 ends and won comfortably 21 - 9 after 14 ends.

 

Men’s Championship Singles Brian Kenyon v David Sowdon
Brian won this title for the first time in 2010 by beating David in a very close game 21 - 17. This turned out to be a very interesting game with both players playing very well. After 10 ends Brian led 9 - 6 and continued to dominate the game. He led 16 - 8 after 15 ends and 18 - 8 after 17 ends. However, David suddenly found the line and length and scored 9 shots over the next 5 ends to narrow the gap to just 1 shot. Brian then scored the necessary 2 shots to win the Championship for the second time 21 - 17.

Men’s Handicap Pairs David Hutchison/John Huxford v Bill Lawrence/Graham Naish
This was always going to be a tough game for Graham & Bill as they had to give David & John 11 shots.
Graham was defending the title whilst Bill was looking to avenge his defeat in 2010. After 5 ends John & David led 13 - 5, but Bill & Graham levelled the scores 16 - 16 after 10 ends. David & John then went ahead 23 - 19 after 15 ends, but back came their opponents to draw level once again 25 - 25 on the 20th end. In a very close last end Bill & Graham scored 1 shot to win an excellent game 26 - 25.

100 Up Cup Eileen Mills v David Sowdon
In what has become a tradition on Finals Weekend the 100 Up Cup was played at the end of the final afternoon session. This turned out to be an excellent game. After 10 ends David led 52 - 48 and 81 - 69 after 15 ends. David ran out winner on the 19th end 100 - 82 to retain the title won in 2011.

Saturday 1st September - Morning Session

Men’s Lower Handicap Singles                   David Bragg v Derek Martin
David appeared in the first of 3 Finals in his very first season at Epsom Bowling Club. This was an excellent achievement for David. He dominated the game right from the start. On the 10th end he led 16 - 0, but Derek then scored two singles. David went on to win comfortably 21 - 2.
Both players were on a handicap of 6.

Ladies’ Handicap Singles                 Marilyn Walsh v Lyz Warren
Marilyn (handicap 9) was playing in her first of three finals. She joined Epsom Bowling Club in 2012.
Lyz (handicap 8) was playing in the first of five Finals. After 5 ends Marilyn raced into a 9 - 0 lead and continued to dominate the game. She led 13 - 3 after 10 ends and went on to win 22 - 5.

Men’s Two Wood Singles                          Graham Pilbrow v David Sowdon
Graham, playing in his first of two Finals had won this Trophy on eleven occasions. David won the Trophy in 2010 and appeared in the first of two finals this year. David got off to an excellent start and led 9 - 0 after 6 ends. He maintained the lead throughout and won on the 19th end 16 - 9.

Saturday 1st September - Afternoon Session

Ladies’ Handicap Pairs                Ruth Nixon/Maggie O’Sullivan v Maureen Morris/Lyz Warren
This was Maggie’s first of two finals. Ruth & Maggie's handicap was 18 & Maureen & Lyz's 14.  It turned out to be a very close game throughout the afternoon with the scores tied on ends 13 (12 - 12) & 19 (16 - 16). Going into the last end Ruth & Maggie led 17 - 16 and Ruth with her fourth bowl drew right onto the jack. It remained there throughout the end giving Ruth & Maggie a win by 2 shots, 18 - 16.

Men’s Handicap Singles                        John Warren v Terry Hoye
John was appearing in his second Final in two years. Terry was appearing in his first Singles Final at Epsom Bowling Club (He won the Men’s Fours in 2010 & was runner up in the same Competition in 2009). John needed to beat Terry by getting 23 shots. This was an epic battle with some excellent bowling throughout the game. After 12 ends they were level 9 - 9, still level, 14 - 14 after 18 ends and again level 18 - 18 after 22 ends. On end 23 John led 20 - 18 and with both players needing 3 shots to win Terry secured these to win his very first Handicap Singles at Epsom Bowling Club.

Saturday 1st September - Afternoon Session

Men’s Handicap Fours                  Arthur Upward/Derek Hoffmann/David Ruston/Brian Kenyon v
                                                        Bob Blaker/Len Philpott/Roy Doughty/Graham Naish

Three players in this game were playing their first game of the weekend. Bob & Brian were in two Finals and Graham in three. Graham & Len were looking to retain the title they won last year & David was hoping it was not going to be two defeats in a row.
This turned out to be close for 12 ends when the teams were level 12 - 12. However, Graham’s team dominated the game from then on running out winners 28 - 13.

 

Mixed Handicap Singles                                     Mary Bragg/David Bragg v Sandra Huxford/John Hart
Mary joined Epsom Bowling Club with her husband David in 2012 this was the first of three Finals and just like David an excellent achievement in her first season. As Mary & David were new to the Club there was a 10 shot handicap in their favour. This turned out to be a huge task for Sandra & John. They were 4 - 18 behind after 10 ends and further behind

9 - 23 after 15 ends. Mary & David went on to win comfortably 27 - 12 finishing the game on the 19th end.

Ladies’ Two Wood Championship                         Eileen Mills v Lyz Warren
Eileen has won this Trophy on four occasions & Lyz was defending the title. After playing & losing two finals Lyz went into this hoping for a victory. She started very well and led 10 - 3 after 10 ends & 12 - 6 after 15 ends. Eileen made a spirited fight back, but Lyz won her first trophy of the day 15 - 10.

 

Ladies' Friendly v Cheam Fields

Epsom Ladies played against Cheam Fields at home on Thursday 31st August 2012 and won on two rinks, and lost the third.  They won overall 57 - 41.

Details:

Rink 3  Audrey Jones  Mary Bragg  Jo Ellis  lost 19 - 22

Epsom was ahead 13 - 11 after 11 ends, but then dropped 5 shots to lose the lead.  However, Epsom drew level 19 - 19 on the 16th end, but Cheam Fields scored 3 shots over the last 2 ends to win by 3 shots.

Rink 4  Sue Needham  Anne Hoffmann  Eileen Mills  won 18 - 13

This turned out to be a very close game until the last two ends.  After 10 ends Epsom led 9 - 6, but Cheam Fields drew level on end 15, and went ahead 13 - 11 on end 16.  Epsom had two excellent ends to finish the game scoring a total of 7 shots to win the game by 5 shots.

Rink 5  Sylvia Smart  Dolly Snow  Gill Sperring  won 20 - 6

This was a very one sided affair.  Epsom led 14 - 2 after 10 ends, 17 - 4 after 15 ends and won comfortably by 14 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 57  Cheam Fields 41

 

Men's Friendly v Cheam Fields

Epsom Men played against Cheam Fields at home on Wednesday 29 August 2012 and won on two rinks, lost on two rinks but won the game 71 - 61.  The match was affected by the weather and the rinks did not complete 21 ends.

Details:

Rink 1  Derek Martin  Clive Banderet  David Bragg  John Warren  won 21 - 13 (17 ends)

After 10 ends this rink led 11 - 4 and continued to dominate the game winning by 8 shots.

Rink 2  Bob Lister  Vic Phillips  Roy Doughty  Ron Snow  lost 13 - 23 (18 ends)

This rink led 6 - 4 after 7 ends, but lost the lead dropping 4 shots on end 8.  Cheam Fields dominated play from then on running out winners by 10 shots.

Rink 3  Arthur Upward  Len Philpott  Derek Hoffmann  John Hart  lost 12 - 20 (19 ends)

This game was very similar to rink 2.  After 13 ends Epsom led 11 - 8, but Cheam Fields came back strongly to out score Epsom 12 shots to 1 to win by 8 shots.

Rink 4  Derek Jones  Bob Blaker  Cyril Newman  John Huxford  won 25 - 5 (18 ends)

This rink totally dominated the afternoon with Cheam Fields scoring on only 5 ends (all singles).  Epsom won comfortably by 20 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 71  Cheam Fields 61

 

President's Team v Secretaries' Team
The Annual match between the President's Team & the Secretaries' Team took place on Sunday 26th August 2012.  The President's Team won on 3 rinks, lost on 2 rinks and drew on 1 rink.  This turned out to be an excellent day with 46 members turning up to play.  After the game the President, Derek Hoffmann laid on Tea & Cakes.

Past Times - Ladies
The Ladies played Bookham on Saturday 25th August 2012 and won away, lost at home but won overall 36 - 30 to reach the Final of this Competition for the very first time.

Details:

Away Rink:  Maggie O’Sullivan  Anne Hoffmann  Eileen Mills  Gill Sperring won 20 - 12

This rink was in control throughout the morning.  They led 12 - 3 after 10 ends, 16 - 6 after 15 ends and finally won by 8 shots.

Home Rink:  Sandra Huxford Jo Ellis  Lyz Warren  Mariyln Walsh  lost 16 - 18

This was a close game with Epsom leading 10 - 9 after 10 ends and 14 - 12 after 15 ends.  Bookham played well over the last 6 ends and beat Epsom by 2 shots.

Final Scores:  Epsom 36  Bookham 30

The Final against Purley Bury will take place on Saturday 8th September 2012 at 10.00am.

 

Sutton & District Bowling Association - Yonwin Cup
Epsom men reached the Final of the Yonwin Cup for the third year in a row by beating Sutton 62 - 50 on Saturday 25th August 2012.

Details:

Rink 2  Brian Kenyon  John Warren Terry Hoye  Les Owen   lost 16 - 19

This was a very close game for 12 ends when Epsom led 10 - 9.  After 17 ends Sutton held a 6 shot lead, 11 - 18, but Epsom out scored Sutton 5 - 1 over the last few ends to lose by 3 shots.

Rink 3  David Sowdon  Ron Mew  Pat Buckley Peter Miller    won 19 - 17

Epsom dominated this game up until the 18th end.  They led 11 - 5 after 10 ends and 14 - 8 after 15 ends.  They had two poor ends (19 & 20) dropping a 3 & then a 5 to win by 2 shots.  As the game was already won by Epsom this rink did not play the last end.

Rink 4  John Hart  David Bragg  Martin Harbottle  Graham Naish  won 27 - 14

Epsom outplayed Sutton on this rink.  They led 14 - 5 after 10 ends, 20 - 11 after 15 ends and went on to win by 13 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 62  Sutton 50

David Bragg made his debut in this competition.

Epsom play in the Final on 22nd September 2012 - to be played at Cheam Sports Bowling Club.

 

Ladies Friendly
The Ladies played at home against Ashtead on Tuesday 21st August 2012 & won on two rinks and lost the third.  They won overall 65 - 46.

Details:

Rink 1  Sue Needham  Maureen Trumble  Lyz Warren  lost 14 - 30

Epsom struggled on this rink all afternoon.  However, they were only 2 shots down, 11-13 after 10 ends but then dropped 6 shots followed by 5 shots.  They did not recover from this finally losing by 16 shots.

Rink 2  Mary Bragg  Jan Allum  Marilyn Walsh  won 24 - 9

Epsom dominated play on this rink all afternoon.  They led 15 - 4 after 10 ends, 23 - 8 after 15 ends and won 24 - 9.

Rink 3  Sylvia Smart  Anne Hoffmann  Gill Sperring  won 27 - 7

This was a similar outcome as rink 2.  Epsom led 16 - 2 after 10 ends, 22 - 6 after 15 ends finally winning by 20 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 65  Ashtead 46

 

East Surrey League - Men & Ladies
On Sunday 19th August 2012 Epsom Men & Ladies played away at Cheam Fields. Epsom Men won 85 - 72 (4 - 2), but the Ladies lost 33 - 40 (0 - 4).  From the Men's point of view this was a disappointing result after the tremendous win against Shirley Park.  However, it still gives Epsom Men a slim chance of winning the League.

After end 3 Epsom dominated this game.  They led 15 - 6 after 10 ends, 20 - 8 after 15 ends & went on to win by 8 shots.

Rink 3  Bill Lawrence  Howard Ellis  Ron Mew  Peter Miller  lost 16 - 19

This was a very close game throughout the afternoon.  After 10 ends the scores were level 7 - 7, but Epsom lost the lead on the 15th end, 9 - 12.  Epsom took the lead on the 18th end, but Cheam Fields levelled the scores 16 - 16  on the penultimate end.  Epsom dropped 3 shots on the last end to lose by 3 shots.

Rink 4  Cyril Newman  John Huxford  John Warren Martin Harbottle    won 26 - 16

Because of the unavailability of several key players Martin Harbottle stepped up to skip this rink and guided the team to an excellent win.  They were 4 - 8 adrift after 6 ends, but then scored 18 shots over the next 8 ends without reply to take a 22 - 8 lead after 14 ends.  Despite dropping 5 shots on the last end they won comfortably by 10 shots.

Rink 5  John Hart  Geoff Purrott  George Sperring  Graham Naish  lost 19 - 21

This was a closely fought game all afternoon.  Epsom led 13 - 8 after 10 ends & still held a 2 shot advantage on the 15th end, 15 - 13.  Epsom finished with 2 poor ends allowing Cheam Fields to snatch a win by 2 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 85  Cheam Field 72    Epsom 4 points  Cheam Fields 2 points

 

Ladies:

Rink 2  Maggie O’Sullivan  Dolly Snow  Eileen Mills  Gill Sperring  lost 17 - 21

After 10 ends Epsom was behind 8 - 11, but pulled back well to level the scores 14 - 14 after 15 ends.  The last 6 ends were keenly contested, but Epsom lost by 4 shots.

Rink 6  Anne Hoffmann  Jan Allum  Lyz Warren  Marilyn Walsh  lost 16 - 19

This was a close match.  After 10 ends the scores were level 10 - 10, but Epsom then took the lead 14 - 13 after 15 ends.  Cheam Fields fought well over the last 6 ends and beat Epsom by 3 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 33  Cheam Fields 40    Epsom 0 points  Cheam Fields 4 points.

 

East Surrey League - Men & Ladies
On Saturday 18th August 2012 Epsom Men & Ladies played Shirley Park at home. Epsom Men have been involved in the East Surrey League since it was founded in 1987 and the game against Shirley Park became the 300th match for the Club. Since 1978 143 members have played in the League and Epsom has won 177 of these matches (losing 118).

The win today for the Men & Ladies was the first time they had beaten Shirley Park 6- 0 and 4- 0 respectively.

Rink 1  John Hart  Geoff Purrott  George Sperring  Graham Naish won 22 - 15

This rink took the lead 6 - 4 after 6 ends and stayed in front throughout the game.  They led 10 - 6 after 10 ends, 18 - 8 after 15 ends finally winning by 7 shots.

Rink 2  Bill Lawrence Derek Hoffmann  Martin Harbottle  Peter Miller   won 27 - 13

This turned out to be an excellent win for Epsom as the Shirley Park rink contained  two top Surrey County players.  They led from start to finish totally outplaying the opposition.  After 10 ends they had a commanding lead 17 - 2, after 15 ends led 19 - 10 and continued to play well.  They won by 14 shots.

Rink 3  Brian Kenyon  John Warren Terry Hoye Les Owen  won 21 - 11

This rink took the lead after 4 ends and dominated play throughout the afternoon.  They led 15 - 7 after 10 ends, 19 - 7 after 15 ends finishing up winning by 10 shots.

Rink 4  Cyril Newman  Ron Snow  John Huxford  David Sowdon   won 28 - 23

This was an amazing game for Epsom as they found themselves 4 - 14 adrift after just 7 ends.  They were still behind 6 - 15 after 10 ends, but rallied well to be just 1 shot behind, 17 - 18 after 16 ends.  Remarkably Epsom took the lead 25 - 23 on the 19th end, but Shirley Park drew level on the 20th end.  On the last end David trailed the jack to hold 4 shots and the Shirley Park skip failed to make any difference.  David drew another to hold 5 shots on what was a great win by 5 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 98  Shirley Park 62     Epsom 6 points  Shirley Park 0 points.

 

Ladies:

Rink 5  Audrey Jones  Jo Ellis  Lyz Warren  Marilyn Walsh  won 19 - 13

This rink took the lead 8 - 7 after 10 ends and led 13 - 10 after 15 ends.  They finally won by 6 shots.

Rink 6  Sandra Huxford  Anne Hoffmann  Eileen Mills  Gill Sperring  won 29 - 12

After 10 ends Epsom Ladies led 15 - 7 and 21 - 9 after 15 ends.  They outplayed Shirley Park over the rest of the game winning comfortably by 17 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 48  Shirley Park 25    Epsom 4 points  Shirley Park 0 points

 

Men's Chrystie League

Epsom Men played away against Esher in the last game of the season against Esher on Monday 13th August 2012 and won on one rink, lost the other and lost the match overall.  This was a very disappointing end of the season after such a promising start.  Epsom finished up 4th in the League with 18 points (3 fewer than in 2011).

Rink 1  Bob Blaker Bob Lister  Derek Martin  John Huxford  lost 11 - 23

This rink were behind all evening.  After 10 ends they were 7 - 11 behind and went further adrift 9 - 17 after 15 ends.  They finally lost by 12 shots.

Rink 2  Vic Phillips  Derek Jones  Ken Lacey  Ron Snow  won 21 - 15

The complete opposite happened on this rink where Epsom led 9 - 7 after 10 ends, 16 - 12 after 15 ends and completed a win by 6 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 32  Esher 38

Men's Friendly v The Surrey Patrons

Epsom Men played against The Surrey Patrons on Sunday 12th August 2012 and won on 4 rinks, lost on the 5th and won the match 109 - 97.

Details:

Rink 1  Derek Martin  Vic Phillips  Ron Snow  Geoff Purrott  won 23 - 15

Epsom was ahead throughout this game.  They led 12 - 5 after 10 ends, 18 - 8 after 15 ends and won overall by 8 shots.

Rink 2  Bill Lawrence  Derek Jones  Cyril Newman Pat Buckley  won 25 - 19

This rink was also ahead all afternoon.  They led 10 - 4 after 10 ends, 18 - 12 after 15 ends & despite losing 5 shots over the last 2 ends they won by 6 shots.

Rink 3  Mike James  David Hutchison  John Warren  Les Owen  won 22 - 18

Epsom was involved in a very close game on this rink. They led 11 - 8 after 10 ends but The Patrons came back well to get within 1 shot, 16 - 15 after 16 ends.  However Epsom finished well to secure a 4 shot win.  Mike James played in his very first match for Epsom in this game.

Rink 4  Sid Bailey  Eric Brown  Bob Blaker  Peter Miller   lost 21 - 28

Epsom trailed 3 - 11 after 8 ends, but then scored a total of 11 shots over the next 4 ends to go ahead 13 - 11.  they were still ahead 19 - 17 after 16 ends but then dropped two 5's to go behind 19 - 27.  They failed to recover finally losing by 7 shots.

Rink 5  Eddie Needham  Len Philpott  Martin Harbottle  Graham Naish  won 18 - 17

Epsom was involved in a very close competitive game on this rink.  They were 2 - 8 behind after just 7 ends, but then scored 13 shots over the next 4 ends to take the lead 15 - 8.  The Patrons came back well and levelled the scores 16 - 16 after 19 ends.  The last two ends were keenly contested with Epsom scoring 2 shots on the 20th end and then restricted the Patrons to just 1 shot on the final end to win narrowly by 1 shot.

Final Score:

Epsom 109  The Surrey Patrons 97

After the match the Men's Captain of Epsom, Les Owen, presented the Chairman of The Surrey Patrons, David Staples with a cheque for £120 to go towards the Surrey Benevolent Fund.

East Surrey League v Bletchingley

Epsom Men travelled to Bletchingley on Saturday 11th August 2012 and won on 3 rinks and lost the 4th.

Details:

Rink 1  Brian Kenyon  Cyril Newman  John Warren Les Owen   lost 12 - 24

Epsom was outplayed on this rink.  They were 8 - 12 down at 10 ends, 10 - 18 adrift at 15 ends eventually losing by 12 shots.

Rink 2  Bill Lawrence  Martin Harbottle  David Sowdon  Peter Miller  won 22 - 18

This rink dominated play all afternoon.  They led 16 - 7 after 10 ends, extended the lead to 23 - 9 after 15 ends finally winning by 22 shots.

This rink also had an excellent afternoon.  They led 11 - 4 after 10 ends, 17 - 8 after 15 ends and finished strongly over the last 3 ends scoring a total of 9 shots to win by 16 shots.

East Surrey League - Top 10

The Men played Sutton in the Top 10 on Friday 10th August 2012 at Sutton and had an outstanding win.

Details:

Singles:   David Sowdon  won 21 - 16

David played against Keith Adams.  After 5 ends David led 5 - 4 but Keith had 4 good ends to go ahead 10 - 5.  After 19 ends Keith led 16 - 10, but David had an excellent finish to the game scoring 11 shots without reply to win by 5 shots.

Pairs:       John Hart  Graham Naish  won 31 - 4

John & Graham had an outstanding game of bowls totally outplaying their opponents.  After 5 ends they led 9 - 1 and increased the lead to 28 - 1 after 13 ends.  As Sutton conceded, the Pairs only played 17 ends and John & Graham won by 27 shots.  During this game John unfortunately broke his spectacles. (expertly repaired by George Sperring & Maggie O'Sullivan!!)

Triples:    Terry Hoye  Pat Buckley  Les Owen  won 14 - 11

The Epsom Triple was ahead all evening.  They led 10 - 3 after 10 ends and finished their game after 16 ends winning by 3  shots.

Fours:      Brian Kenyon  Ron Mew  Peter Miller  Jim Scott  lost 13 - 20

The Fours were ahead 6 - 3 after 5 ends, but lost the next 5 ends to go 6 - 15 down.  They finished after 16 ends losing by 7 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 79  Sutton 51   Epsom 3 points  Sutton 1 point

Epsom will now play Wallington in the Final.

 

Men & Ladies Friendly Matches

The Men & Ladies played in Friendly matches on Wednesday 8th August 2012 and both lost.  The Men lost at home against Carshalton 45 - 75 & the Ladies lost away at Bookham 49 - 51.

This rink trailed Bookham throughout the afternoon.  They were 5 - 13 down after 10 ends, 9 - 18 behind after 15 ends finally losing by 7 shots.

Rink 2  Maggie O’Sullivan  Trish Tewfik  Lyz Warren  Eileen Mills  drew 17 - 17

This rink was behind 5 - 11 after 10 ends, but on ends 11 to 15 they scored a total of 8 shots to take the lead 13 - 11.

The last 3 ends were evenly contested and the result was a draw.

Rink 3  Sue Needham  Sylvia Smart  Jan Allum  Jo Ellis  won 17 - 12

This rink was also behind after 10 ends, 6 - 8, but came back well to take the lead 11 - 9 after 15 ends.  They continued to play well finally winning by 5 shots.

Men v Carshalton

Rink 1  Bob Lister  Derek Martin  Ron Snow  lost 9 - 18

This rink got off to a bad start & were 1 - 8 down after just 5 ends.  Carshalton continued to dominate play & the rink lost by 9 shots.

Rink 2  Eddie Needham  Eric Brown  John Huxford   lost 9 - 22

The story on this rink was similar to rink 1 with Epsom also being 1 - 8 behind after 5 ends.  Carshalton continued to out play Epsom and won by 13 shots.

Rink 3  Vic Phillips  David Bragg  John Warren  lost 8 - 22

Once again this rink had a similar outcome to rinks 1 & 2.  They were behind 1 - 10 after 5 ends, 3 - 15 behind after 15 ends finally losing by 14 shots.

Rink 4  Derek Jones  Howard Ellis  Brian Kenyon  won 19 - 13

This rink had a very good evening and led from start to finish.  They led 12 - 5 after 10 ends, 17 - 7 after 15 ends & won by 6 shots.

Chrystie League

Epsom Men played Leatherhead at home on Monday 6th August 2012 and lost the match 28 - 38.

This rink was behind all evening.  After 10 ends they trailed 7 - 8 and were 2 shots adrift at 15 ends.  They lost by 6 shots.

Rink 2  Arthur Upward  Bob Lister  David Ruston  David Bragg  lost 17 - 21

After 10 ends Epsom was 6 - 11 down and further behind, 11 - 20 after 15 ends.  They had 3 good ends narrowing the score to a 4 shot defeat.

Ladies' Past Times

Epsom Ladies played Malden Manor in the Past Times Competition on Sunday morning 5th August 2012 and won on both rinks winning the match 57 - 37.

Away Rink:  Maggie O’Sullivan  Anne Hoffmann  Eileen Mills  Gill Sperring  won 30 - 16

The away rink got off to a slow start and found themselves 7 - 12 down after 10 ends.  They then dominated the next 5 ends scoring 13 shots without reply to go ahead 20 - 12.  They maintained this momentum eventually winning by 14 shots.

Home Rink:  Sandra Huxford  Jo Ellis  Lyz Warren  Marilyn Walsh  won 27 - 21

This home rink was in control all morning and led 14 - 7 after 10 ends.  They had a 6 shot advantage after 15 ends, 22 - 16 and went on to win by 6 shots.

This win takes Epsom Ladies into the Semi Final.

 

Mixed Friendly

Epsom played Raynes Park in a Mixed Triples match on Saturday 4th August 2012 and lost on 3 rinks, drew on one rink & lost the match overall 57 - 82.

Rink 2  Bob Blaker  Audrey Jones  Ron Snow   lost 12 - 28

Epsom led 6 - 5 after 5 ends, but Raynes Park dominated most of the rest of the game.  Over ends 7 to 12 Epsom dropped a total of 10 shots to go behind 7 - 22.  Raynes Park finished strongly and won by 16 shots.

Rink 3  Ruth Nixon  Derek Jones  Lyz Warren   drew 17 - 17

Epsom dominated this rink right up to end 12 when they led 16 - 4.  However Raynes Park scored 13 shots to Epsom's 1 shot over the remaining ends to snatch a draw.

Rink 3  Mary Bragg  Jan Allum  Brian Kenyon  lost 17 - 19

Epsom led 10 - 8 after 10 ends and 15 - 10 after 15 ends.  On the 16th & 17th end they dropped a total of 9 shots to lose the lead.  Going into the last end Epsom needed 4 to draw but only scored 2 shots to lose the rink by 2 shots.

Rink 5  Sue Needham  Eric Brown  John Warren  lost 11 - 18

Epsom found themselves 0 - 9 behind after just 3 ends.  After 10 ends they were 4 - 15 down, but had a much better last few ends outscoring Raynes Park 7 - 3.  They eventually lost by 7 shots.

Ladies' Friendly

Epsom Ladies have an excellent week with two wins.  They beat Ewell 68 - 23 on Tuesday 31st July 2012 & Epsom Park on Thursday 2nd 2012 58 - 43.

This turned out to be a very one sided game with Epsom dominating from start to finish.  After 10 ends they led 12 - 4 and went on to win by 31 shots.

Rink 3  Trish Tewfik  Maureen Trumble  Lyz Warren  won 18 - 7

This rink also had a good afternoon and led 9 - 5 after 10 ends and went on to win by 11 shots.

Rink 1  Audrey Jones  Maureen Trumble  Lyz Warren  won 29 - 7

This rink raced into a 15 - 2 lead after 10 ends and continued to play well going on to win by 22 shots.

Rink 2  Mary Bragg  Dolly Snow  Anne Hoffmann  lost 7 - 22

This turned out to be a struggle for the Epsom rink.  They were behind 5 - 12 after 10 ends and finally lost by 15 shots.

After 10 ends this rink found themselves 9 - 10 down.  They came back well over the remaining 8 ends to win by 8 shots.
