Vilamoura Mixed League

Epsom played their first Vilamoura game of the season on Friday 31st May 2024. They won on both rinks winning 47 - 25 (6 - 0 ).

Details:

Home: Brian Kenyon Liz Hind Fred Read  won 28 - 15

After 7 ends Epsom led 15 - 2, but lost the next 4 ends dropping 8 shots.  They out scored Cheam 13 - 5 over the last 7 ends to win by 13 shots.

Away: Paul Maskell  Phil Sims Trish Southgate won 19 - 10

The scores were level 6 - 6 after 8 ends, but Epsom led 13 - 8 on end 13.  They won by 9 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 47  Cheam 25  Epsom 6 points  Cheam 0 points.

Bowls England Top Club - Tony Allcock Trophy

Epsom played in the first round of the Tony Allcock Trophy on Thursday 30th May 2024 at home against Sutton. They lost on both rinks & the match 25 - 45. Despite the score Epsom players played well against a very strong Sutton side.

Epsom were 7 - 14 down after 9 ends & lost by 17 shots.

Rink 3  Janet Newman Sue Skinner David Bragg Keith Roberts  lost 15 - 18

Epsom were 8 - 11 down after 8 ends, but won the next 3 ends to lead 13 - 12.  They lost 4 of the last 5 ends played to lose by 3 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 25  Sutton 45

Did you know

The Tony Allcock Trophy stared in 2011.  Since then Epsom have played 21 matches, won 9 & lost 12. They have reached the third round on 2 occasions (2015 & 2019). Of the current members at the Club Epsom have been represented by 25 players.

In this match the following played their very first game in this Competition – Janet Newman, Sue Skinner, David Bragg, Christine Summerfield, Mick Cooper & David Fearn.

 

Bowls England Top Club - Ladies

Epsom played in the second round of the Bowls England Ladies Top Club Competition at home on Wednesday 29th May 2024 against Ashtead.  They won the Singles & Pairs, drew the Triples & lost the Fours.  They won 2˝ - 1˝ (62 - 56). This is the 3rd time in their history that the ladies have reached the 3rd round in this Competition.

Details:

Singles: Fi Drinkall  won 21 - 12

After 10 ends Fi led 8 - 7 & was still ahead 15 - 12 on end 16.  She won by 9 shots on the 20th end.

Pairs: Sandy Cooper Christine Summerfield  won 14 - 10

The scores were level 5 - 5 after 7 ends, but Epsom led 12 - 7 on end 14.  They won by 4 shots.

Triples: Lynn Phillips Trish Southgate Mary Green  drew 14 - 14

Epsom led 9 - 8 after 9 ends & 14 - 9 on end 14.  They lost the last 4 ends to tie the rink.

Fours: Janet Newman Liz Hind Frances Suttonwood Sandie Harvey  lost 13 - 20

Epsom were 7 - 11 down after 9 ends, but drew level 13- 13 on end 16.  They dropped 7 shots over the last 2 ends to lose by 7 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 2˝  Ashtead 1˝

Did you know

Since 2003 the ladies have played 22 matches, won 8 & lost 14. They played Ashtead in 2023 when they won the Pairs, Triples, Fours & lost the singles.  They won 3 - 1.

Lynn Phillips played in her very first game in this Competition.

 

East Surrey League - Top Club

Epsom men travelled to Ashtead to play in the first round of the ESL Top Club Competition on Tuesday 28th May 2024. They won the 2 Wood Singles & Triples, lost the 4 Wood Singles, Pairs & Fours & lost overall 2 - 3. The outcome of the game was decided in the Pairs when Epsom had to play an extra end. Ashtead won the match with the very last bowl in this game leaving Epsom losing 2 - 3.

Details:

Singles: Jim Scott lost 20 - 21

The scores were level 13 - 13 after 13 ends, but Jim went behind 14 - 19 on end 18.  He won the next 4 ends to lead 20 - 19, but dropped 2 shots on end 23 to lose by 1 shot.

Two Wood: Phil Sims  won 12 - 9

The scores were level 6 - 6 after 11 ends, but Phil led 10 - 7 on end 16.  He won by3 shots after 19 ends.

Pairs: Ted Ray Andrew Turnbull lost 17 - 18

The scores were level 9 - 9 after 9 ends & level again 13 - 13 on end 15. Going into the last end Epsom led 17 - 13, but dropped 4 shots to tie the rink. Ashtead won the extra end with the very last bowl.

Triples: Hayden Thornton Wayne Thornton David Fearn  won 23 - 9

Epsom were 1 - 8 down after 6 ends, but won the next 9 ends to lead 23 - 8.  They won by 17 shots.

Fours: Rob Murkin Les Owen Martin Harbottle Norman Mann lost 17 - 20

Epsom led 16 - 3 after 8 ends, but lost the next 9 ends to go 16 - 20 down.  They lost by 3 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 2  Ashtead 3

East Surrey League Top 10/11

The Top 10 Competition started in 1997 & continued to 2007 when it changed to a Top 11 Competition bringing it in line with the equivalent Competition run by Bowls England.

Epsom played 24 matches in the Top 10, won 13 & lost 11. In the Top 11 matches Epsom have played 36 times, won 21 & lost 15.

Epsom won the Top 10 Competition in 2008 when they beat Warlingham Park on shots 72 – 71. The rinks ended up 2 – 2.  27 members who are currently members of Epsom Bowling Club have played in this Competition.

Rob Murkin, Hayden Thornton & Norman Mann played in their first game in this Competition.

 

Bowls England Top Club - Ladies

Epsom played in the first round of the Bowls England Ladies Top Club Competition on Sunday 26th May 2024. They won the Pairs, Triples, Fours, lost the Singles & won overall 3 - 1.

Details:

Singles: Fi Drinkall lost 19 - 21

After 12 ends Fi led 16 - 3 & 17 - 6 on end 16.  She then lost the next 7 ends to go 17 - 20 down.  She lost by 2 shots.

Pairs: Sandy Cooper Annette Jordan  won 20 - 12

Epsom led 9 - 5 after 9 ends, but were 11 - 12 down on end 15.  They won the next 3 ends picking up 9 shots to win by 8.

Triples: Trish Southgate Ruth Baker Mary Green won 20 - 17

Epsom were 8 - 11 down after 9 ends & 11 - 16 behind on end 13.  They won the next 4 ends picking up 9 shots to lead 20 - 16.  They won by 3 shots.

Fours: Liz Hind Francs Suttonwood Christine Summerfield Sandie Harvey  won 21 - 10

Epsom led 12 - 6 after 9 ends & 20 - 8 on end 15.  They won by 11 shots.

Final Result:  Epsom 3 points  Cheam Fields 1 point

Did you know

Bowls England – Ladies Top 10

The first recorded entry for the ladies in the Top 10 was in 2003.  They lost to Dorking 54 – 92 (0 – 4).

Since then they have played 21 matches, won 7 & lost 14. The best year was in 2014 when they reached the third round. During the years 2016 to 2022 the ladies did not enter this Competition. They re-entered in 2023 when they won 2 matches & lost 1. Since 2003 the ladies have played 15 different Clubs in this Competition.

Annette Jordan played in her very first game in this Competition & in doing so becomes the 42nd lady member to participate in the Bowls England Top Club.

 

East Surrey League - Men

Epsom played away against Cheam on Saturday 25th May 2024. They drew on 1 rink, lost on 2 rinks & lost overall 35 - 47 (1 - 9). Epsom were behind all afternoon.  They were 22 - 28 behind across the 3 rinks after 10 ends & lost by 12 shots.

Epsom led 8 - 7 after 9 ends & 12 - 8 on end 14.  They lost the last 4 ends to lose by 4 shots.

Epsom played against Purley at home on Thursday 23rd May 2024 in a Triples match. They won all 3 rinks winning 51 - 36.

Epsom were 8 - 9 down after 9 ends, but won the next 3 ends to go ahead 16 - 9.  They lost the last 2 ends & won by 2 shots.

Epsom led 12 - 5 after 12 ends & went on to win by 4 shots.

Rink 5  Terry Mears John Hart Fred Read  won 17 - 8

Epsom led 8 - 5 after 8 ends & won the next 4 ends to lead 13 - 5.  They won by 9 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 51  Purley 36

Epsom played against Banstead Neville at home on Tuesday 21st May 2024. They won on 2 rinks, lost on 1 rink & won overall 31 - 25. Because of the bad weather the ladies only played 10 ends.

East Surrey League - Men

Epsom played at home against Dorking on Saturday 18th May 2024. They won on 1 rink, lost on 2 rinks & lost overall 44 - 53 (2 - 8).

Before the game our President, Brian Collis, presented John Warren with a certificate to mark his 200th appearance in the East Surrey League. He becomes the 7th member of the Club to reach this milestone.

Epsom led 3 - 0 after 2 ends, but lost the next 9 ends to go 3 - 11 down.  They were still behind 9 - 11 on end 14, lost the last 4 ends to lose by 15 shots.

Epsom led 7 - 3 after 5 ends then won the next 5 ends to go further ahead 18 - 3.  They won by 15 shots.

After 9 ends Epsom were 6 - 11 down & still behind 8 - 20 on end 15.  They lost by 9 shots.

Epsom men have played Dorking 8 times in the ESL.  They have won 4, & lost 8. Dorking joined the league in 2006.

Epsom played at home against Purley Bury on Saturday 18th May 2024 in their first ESLL match of the season.  They lost on both rinks & the match 23 - 34 (0 - 4).

Epsom played at home on Thursday 16th May 2024 against Cheam in the B E Top Club.  They won the Four Wood singles & lost the Two Wood Singles, Pairs, Triples & Fours. They lost 1 - 4.

Rink 5 - Singles Jim Scott  won 20 - 6

Jim led 12 - 2 after 8 ends & 18 - 6 on end 14. His opponent conceded when the score was 20 - 6.

Rink 5 - Two Wood Singles Keith Roberts  lost 14 - 18

Keith led 10 - 6 after 10 ends, but lost the next 6 ends to go 10 - 12 down. He lost on the 20th end by 4 shots.

Rink 3 - Pairs Andrew Turnbull Les Owen  lost 14 - 20

Epsom were 8 - 14 down after 10 ends & lost by 6 shots.

Rink 6 - Triples Hayden Thornton Wayne Thornton David Fearn  lost 13 - 15

Epsom were level 11 - 11 after 10 ends & lost by 2 shots.

Rink 4 - Fours David Bragg Bob Blaker Norman Mann Martin Harbottle  lost 10 - 18

After 9 ends Epsom were 7 - 8 down & 10 - 15 behind on end 14.  They lost by 8 shots.

Norman Mann played in his first game in this Competition.

The Top 11 Competition started in 2003.  Epsom first entered the Competition in 2004.  Since then they have played 38 games, won 19 & lost 19. In 20012 & 2016 Epsom won on all 5 disciplines (against Ashtead & Cheam Fields) & have not lost in the 5 disciplines. Of the current members at the Club Epsom have been represented by 22 players. Epsom have played Cheam 5 times in this Competition.  They have won 3 & lost 2. (won in 2008/2011/2015 & lost in 2021/24). Since 2004 Epsom have played 16 different Clubs. Of our current members Martin Harbottle has played 27 matches, Les Owen 26 & Brian Kenyon 25.

 

Ladies Friendly

Epsom played their second friendly game of the season against Malden Manor on Tuesday 14th May 2024. They won on 1 rink, lost on the second & won overall 45 - 23.

Epsom led 7 - 6 after 9 ends, but were 10 - 15 behind on end 15.  They lost by 7 shots.

Rink 3  Penny Payne Liz Hind Frances Suttonwood Ruth Baker won 34 - 5

Epsom dominated this rink winning 14 of the 18 ends.  They led 12 - 2 after 9 ends & went on to win by 29 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 45  Malden Manor 23

Vilamoura Mixed League

Epsom played their very first game in this league against Banstead Neville on Monday 13th May 2024. They lost on both rinks losing 14 - 53 (0 - 6).

Banstead Neville have joined the league in 2024 and this is the first time these teams have met in this Competition.

Epsom played at home against Epsom Park in the Bowls England Two Fours on Sunday 12th May 2024. They lost on both rinks losing 21 - 46.

Epsom were 6 - 9 down after 8 ends & lost by 9 shots.

Epsom led 7 - 4 after 6 ends, but lost the next 9 ends to go 7 - 25 down.  They lost by 16 shots.

Originally the National Competitions came under the heading ‘England Bowling Association’ (EBA).

Epsom first entered the Two Fours Competition in 1978 when it was called the Nat West Fours.

In 2007 the Association was renamed Bowls England (BE) and the Competition became known as the Bowls England Two Fours.

In 1978 & for a few years Epsom entered two teams into the Competition, but now only enter 1 team (mainly because of number of members). Over the years Epsom have had little success in this Competition reaching the third round on just 3 occasions (2014/15/17).

Of our current membership 23 members have played in the BE Two Fours.

Since 1978 Epsom have played 27 different Clubs in this Competition & apart from the Clubs we play these days on a regular basis Epsom have played Albury, Hare & Otter, East Preston & Kingston & Astolat. Albury celebrate their centenary in 2024 & Astolat have merged with Guildord.

 

East Surrey League

Epsom travelled to Redhill for their third ESL match on Saturday 11th May 2024. This turned out to be a very close match with Epsom winning 45 - 44 (8 - 2). Epsom were losing across the 3 rinks right up to the 16th end.  After 10 ends they were 19 - 28 down, but over ends 16, 17 & 18 Epsom outscored Redhill 13 - 5 to win by 1 shot.

Details:

Rink 1  John Hart Bob Blaker Wayne Thornton David Fearn  won 15 - 14

Epsom lost the first 6 ends & were 3 - 9 down after 9 ends.  They were still behind 8 - 14 on end 16, but scored a total of 7 shots over the last 2 ends to win by 1 shot.

Rink 2  Keith Roberts John Warren Andrew Turnbull Les Owen  won 19 - 18

Epsom led 10 - 6 after 9 ends, but were behind 12 - 14 on end 13. They won the next 3 ends scoring 6 shots to lead 18 - 14. They then dropped 4 shots on end 17 & were level going into the last end. John drew his first bowl right on the jack & it remained there for the rest of the end leaving Epsom winning by 1 shot.

Rink 3  Barry Jordan Mick Cooper Norman Mann Martin Harbottle  lost 11 - 12

Epsom led 6 - 4 after 9 ends, but lost the next 5 ends to go 6 - 12 down. They won the last 4 ends, but lost by 1 shot.

Final Score: Epsom 45  Redhill 44  Epsom 8 points  Redhill 2 points.

East Surrey League

Epsom played their second league match at home against Caterham on Saturday 4th May 2024. They won on 2 rinks, lost on 1 rink & won overall 62 - 40 (8 - 2).  After 9 ends Epsom led 46 - 7 & 53 - 30 on ends 15.  They won by 22 shots. This was a very good win after a disappointing loss against Shirley Park last week.

Details:

Epsom led 7 - 4 after 9 ends, but were 9 - 12 down on end 15.  They won the last 2 ends & lost by 4 shots.

Rink 4  Barry Jordon Mick Cooper Norman Mann Martin Harbottle  won 30 - 10

Epsom were 5 - 3 ahead on end 3 & won the next 7 ends to go 22 - 3 ahead.  They led 24 - 10 after 15 ends & won the last 3 ends to win by 20 shots.

Rink 5   David Bragg John Warren Andrew Turnbull Les Owen  won 20 - 14

Epsom led 18 - 0 after 9 ends, but only won 2 more ends, they won by 6 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 62  Caterham 40   Epsom 8 points  Caterham 2 points

Norman Mann & Barry Jordan played in their very first League match for Epsom Bowling Club.  They become the 169th & 170th members to play in this League.

Did you know

Epsom have played Caterham 31 times in the East Surrey League.  They have won 20, lost 9, drawn 1 & one game was abandoned after 15 ends.  This abandoned game in 1987 was the first game that the 2 Clubs had met in the League.  After the 15 ends Caterham won 81 – 43 (0 – 6). It must also be remembered that at this time games were played over 4 rinks.

Last season Epsom won both at home and away against Caterham.

 

Ladies' Friendly

Epsom played their first friendly match of the season against Supreme.  They lost on both rinks & the match 24 - 38.

After 9 ends across the 2 rinks Epsom led 15 - 14, but they lost by14 shots.

After 9 ends Epsom were 6 - 10 down & 11 - 16 behind on end 15.  They lost by 6 shots.

After 10 ends Epsom led 10 - 4, but lost all the remaining ends to lose by 8 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 24  Supreme 38

East Surrey League

Epsom began the season by playing Shirley Park in the East Surrey League on Saturday 27th April 2024.  They lost on all 3 rinks & the match 34 - 65 (0 - 10). This was a disappointing start to the season for Epsom men.  They were 22 - 35 down after 9 ends & lost by 31 shots. This season all games in this League are being played over 18 ends.

Epsom were 4 - 19 down after 9 ends & lost by 24 shots.

The scores were level 10 - 10 after 9 ends, but Epsom were 13 - 17 behind on end 15.  They lost by 6 shots.

Rink 3  John Savill John Warren Wayne Thornton David Fearn  lost 11 - 12

The scores were level 6 - 6 after 9 ends, but Epsom were 9 - 11 down on end 15.  The scores were level again, 11 - 11 going into the last end, but Epsom dropped 1 shot to lose by 1.

Final Score:  Epsom 34  Shirley Park 65   Epsom 0 points  Shirley Park 10 points.
