East Surrey League - Top Club - Men

Epsom men played at home in the ESL Top Club against Cheam on Sunday 28th May 2023. They won the Pairs, Triples, Fours & lost the Two Wood & 4 Wood Singles. The won the match 3 - 2.

Details:

Singles: Phil Sims  lost 11 - 15

After 9 ends Phil led 7 - 4 & still led 11 - 6 after 14 ends.  He lost all the remaining ends (20 played) to lose 11 - 15.

Two Wood: David Fearn  lost 19 - 23

David was 4 - 8 down after 10 ends & 7 - 12 behind after 16 ends.  He drew level 19 - 19 on end 24, but lost by 4 shots.

Pairs: Wayne Thornton Jim Scott  won 16 - 15

Epsom were 6 - 8 down after 10 ends, but were ahead 10 - 9 on end 14. They kept the lead & won by 1 shot.

Triples: John Hart Keith Roberts John Warren  won 23 - 6

Epsom led 9 - 3 after 9 ends & 20 - 6 after 15 ends.  They won by 17 shots after 17 ends.

Fours: John Lystor Peter Miller David Bragg Martin Harbottle  won 21 - 16

Epsom led 7 - 4 after 6 ends, but lost the next 5 ends to go 7 - 12 behind.  They were still behind 11 - 15 on end 15, but won 5 of the remaining ends to win by 5 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 3  Cheam 2

ESL Top Club

This Competition started in 1997.  It was originally a Top 10 Competition (Singles. Pairs, Triples & Fours) & changed in 2018 to a Top 11 Competition (adding a Two Wood Singles). Since 1997 Epsom have played 54 matches, won 33 & lost 21.

In 2008 Epsom beat Warlingham Park in the Final.  They beat Sutton 95 – 42, Purley 93 – 72, Shirley Park 76 – 63 & Warlingham Park in the Final 71 – 70. The following represented Epsom Bowling Club in this final - Ted Ray, Stefan Tomm, John Hart, Graham Pilbrow, Les Owen, Terry Hoye, Martin Harbottle & Peter Miller.

Epsom have also lost in 3 Top 10 Finals – 2000, 2001 & 2012.

In this game against Cheam the following members played their first match in this Competition – Wayne Thornton, John Lystor & David Bragg.

 

East Surrey League - Men

Epsom men played at home in the ESL against Cheam Fields on Saturday 27th May 2023. They won on 2 rinks, lost on 1 rink & won overall 62 - 54 (8 - 2). This was a match that was won over the last 3 ends across the 3 rinks.  Epsom were behind 22 - 39 after 10 ends, 44 - 50 after 18 ends but outscored Cheam Fields 18 shots to 4 over the last 3 ends to win by 8 shots.

Epsom were 6 - 10 down after 10 ends & 12 - 17 behind after 17 ends.  They took the lead going into the last end 18 - 17, but dropped 2 shots.

Rink 3  Stefan Tomm Keith Roberts David Bragg Martin Harbottle  won 20 - 18

Epsom were 6 - 16 down after 12 ends, but outscored Cheam Fields 14 - 2 over the rest of the game to win by 2 shots.

Rink 4  Ted Ray Derek Martin Wayne Thornton Jim Scott  won 24 - 17

This was a similar story to rink 3 with Epsom rink 7 - 16 down after 12 ends.  They outscored Cheam Fields 17 - 1 over the remaining ends to win by 7 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 62  Cheam Fields 54  Epsom 8 points  Cheam Fields 2 points

Did you know

Cheam Fields joined the league in 1989.  Since then the Clubs have met 34 times with Epsom winning 23, losing 10 with 1 drawn match.

 

Men's Friendly

Epsom travelled to Purley to play a friendly Triples match on Thursday 25th May 2023 & won on 2 rinks, drew on 1 rink, lost on 1 rink & won over all 70 - 64.  After 9 ends across the 4 rinks Epsom led 37 - 30 & went on to win by 6 shots.

Details:

Rink 1  Mick Cooper Fred Read Les Owen  drew 21 - 21

Epsom led 11 - 7 after 9 ends, but went behind 13 - 15 on end 13.  Going into the last end Epsom led 21 - 20, but the rink was drawn.

Rink 2  Brian Kenyon Brian Collis Bob Blaker  won 20 - 16

Epsom led 11 - 10 after 9 ends, but were level 16 - 16 going into the last end.  Epsom picked up 4 shots.

Rink 3  Barry Coe John Hart John Warren  lost 12 - 15

Epsom led 8 - 6 after 9 ends, but were 10 - 12 behind on end 15.  They lost by 3 shots.

Rink 4  Paul Maskell Stefan Tomm David Fearn  won 17 - 12

The scores were level 7 - 7 after 9 ends & still level 11 - 11 after 14 ends.  Epsom were 11 - 12 down on end 15, but won the last 3 ends to win by 5 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 70  Purley 64.

Did you know

The first recorded match against Purley was in 1992. The Clubs played each other again in 1993, but for some reason the fixture was dropped from the calendar.  It was revived in 2016.  The Clubs have now played each other 9 times with Epsom winning on 7 occasions & losing 2.

Purley together with Dorking were promoted to Division 1 in the ESL for the 2023 season.

 

Bowls England Two Fours

Epsom travelled to Chipstead to play in the second round of the Bowls England Two Fours. They lost on both rinks & the match 26 - 58.

Details:

Rink 4  John Wellard Mick Cooper Phil Sims Keith Roberts  lost 12 - 39

On the first end Epsom scored 8 shots, but only scored on 4 more ends to lose by 27 shots.

Rink 5  Ted Ray David Bragg David Fearn Wayne Thornton  lost 14  19

After 9 ends Epsom were 7 - 11 down & 10 - 15 behind on end 15.  They lost by 5 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 26  Chipstead 58

Did you know

Originally this Competition was called the NatWest Trophy & Epsom first entered in 1978. Bowls England took over the Competition in 2007.  In the early years Epsom entered 2 teams, but now it is only 1. Epsom have played 69 matches, won 32 & lost 37.  (NB some of the very early results were not recorded). In 1981 & 1995 Epsom won 3 rounds.

 

Ladies Friendly v Banstead Neville

Epsom travelled the short distance to Banstead Neville to play in a friendly Triples match on Tuesday 23rd May 2023 and won on 2 rinks, lost on 1 rink & won overall 58 - 38

Rink 2  Sandra Huxford Elaine Coe Ruth Baker  won 21 - 6

After 6 ends Epsom led 8 - 2 & won the next 7 ends to go 18 - 5 ahead.  They won by 15 shots.

Rink 4  Audrey Jones Penny Payne Christine Summerfield  lost 12 - 19

Epsom were 6 - 9 down after 9 ends, but led 12 - 10 on end 13.  However, they lost all the remaining ends to lose by 7 shots.

Rink 4  Lesley South Sue Skinner Sandie Harvey won 25 - 13

After 9 ends Epsom led 18 - 6.  They still led 23 - 11 after 15 ends & won by 12 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 58  Banstead Neville 38

Did you know

Epsom ladies first played Banstead Neville 2007.  Since then there have been 15 matches with Epsom winning 8, losing 7 & there have been 2 matches cancelled.

Lesley South played her very first friendly match for Epsom Bowling Club.

 

East Surrey League - Men

Epsom men played their fourth league match of the season in the ESL away against Ashtead on Saturday 20th May 2023. They won on 1 rink, lost on 2 rinks & drew overall 61 - 61 (4 - 6). After 10 ends across the 3 rinks Epsom were 27 - 28 down & still 1 shot behind, 52 - 53 after 18 ends. Epsom won 9 shots to 8 over the last 3 ends to tie the match.

Details:

Epsom were 8 - 9 down after 10 ends, but were level 13 - 13 after 13 ends.  They led 18 - 17 after 17 ends, but lost the last 4 ends to lose by 4 shots.

Rink 4  Phil Sims Mick Cooper Peter Miller Keith Roberts  lost 17 - 19

Epsom were 5 - 8 down after 10 ends & 12 - 14 behind after 15 ends.  They led 17 - 16 going into the last end, but dropped 3 shots to lose by 2.

Rink 5  Ted Ray John Wellard David Fearn Wayne Thornton  won 25 - 19

Epsom led 14 - 11 after 10 ends & 19 - 16 after 15 ends. They won the last 3 ends to win by 6 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 61  Ashtead 61   Epsom 4 points  Ashtead 6 points

Did you know

Ashtead joined the league in 1990. Ashtead & Epsom were relegated from division 1 in 2022.

The Clubs have played each other 32 times with Epsom winning 25, losing 5 & there have been 2 drawn matches. Before this game Epsom had won 10 matches in a row & the only other draw was in 2006.

 

East Surrey League - Ladies

Epsom ladies played their first league match of the season in the ESLL away against Purley Bury on Saturday 20th May 2023. They won on 1 rink, lost on 1 rinks & lost overall 26 - 40 (1 - 3). After 10 ends across the 2 rinks Epsom led 22 - 15, but were 23 - 32 behind after 15 ends.  They lost by 14 shots.

Epsom were 8 - 12 down after 10 ends, lost the next 7 ends & lost by 18 shots.

Rink 3  Fi Drinkall Trish Southgate Ruth Baker Mary Green  won 17 - 13

Epsom led 14 - 3 after 10 ends, lost the next 4 ends but still led 15 - 11.  They won by 4 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 26  Purley Bury 40  Epsom 1 point  Purley Bury 3 points

Purley Bury joined the ESLL in 2019. The Clubs have played each other 4 times with Epsom winning 2 & Purley Bury winning 2.

 

Ladies Friendly

Epsom ladies travelled to Malden Manor to play a 2 rink friendly on Tuesday 16th May 2023. They lost on both rinks & the match 24 - 44.

Epsom led 8 - 7 after8 ends, but were9 - 17 behind on end 14.  They lost by 7 shots.

Rink 6  Sandra Huxford Sue Needham Janet Newman Frances Suttonwood  lost 10 - 23

Epsom were 4 - 17 down after 10 ends & lost by 13 shots.

Did you know

Bowls England Top Club - Ladies

Epsom ladies played Ashtead at home in the Bowls England Top Club on Monday 15th May 2023 & won 3 - 1.

Details:

Singles: Fi Drinkall  lost 8 - 21

Fi was 2 - 14 down after 10 ends & lost by 13 shots.

Pairs: Penny Payne Christine Summerfield   won 18 - 17

Epsom led 9 - 6 after 9 ends, but were 13 - 17 down with 2 ends to play.  They scored 4 shots on end 17 to tie & going into the last end Epsom needed to win to avoid playing extra ends.  Christine was 2 shots down, but drew the shot to win by 1 shot.

Triples: Trish Southgate Ruth Baker Mary Green  won 17 - 9

Epsom led 12 - 1 after 10 ends & 14 - 7 after 15 ends.  They won by 8 shots.

Fours: Sandy Cooper Sue Skinner Frances Suttonwood Sandie Harvey  won 21 - 19

Epsom led 17 - 3 after 10 ends, but lost the next 7 ends to go 17 - 18 behind. Going into the last end they were 17 - 19 down, but picked up 4 shots to win by by 2.

Final Score:  Epsom 3  Ashtead 1

 

Did you know

The Ladies first played in this Competition in 2003.  They continued to play until the 2015 season.  In that time the Ladies won 4 matches. Their best season was in 2014 when they beat Cheam 76 – 71, Wallington 92 – 49, but then lost to Cheam Fields 54 – 92.

This was the first time since 2015 that the Ladies have entered this Competition.

Ruth Baker is the only lady who played in a previous Bowls England Top Club match.  She has made 6 appearances.

 

Bowls England Two Fours

Epsom travelled the short distance to Cheam Fields to play in the first round of the Bowls England Two Fours. They won on 1 rink, lost on the second & won overall 38 - 36.

Epsom led 10 - 9 after 9 ends, but the scores were level 15 - 15 on end 15.  Epsom took the lead 17 - 15 on end 16, but dropped 7 shots over the last 2 ends to lose by 5 shots.

Rink 6  Ted Ray David Fearn Wayne Thornton Les Owen  won 21 - 14

Epsom led 16 - 2 after 9 ends & 21 - 8 after 16 ends.  They won by 7 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 38  Cheam Fields 36

They won on 2 rinks, lost on 1 rink & won overall 66 - 44 (8 - 2). Epsom led across the 3 rinks all afternoon.  They led 45 - 35 after 15 ends & won by 22 shots.

Epsom led 14 - 0 after 5 ends & 21 - 2 after 10 ends.  They won by 20 shots.

Rink 4  Ted Ray John Wellard Keith Roberts Wayne Thornton  lost 16 - 17

Epsom were 7 - 13 down after 12 ends, but won the next 5 ends to lead 14 - 13.  They went behind 14 - 17 on end 19 & lost by 1 shot.

Rink 5  John Lystor Bob Blaker Martin Harbottle Jim Scott  won 21 - 18

Epsom were 9 - 5 ahead after 8 ends, but lost the next 7 ends to go 9 - 16 down.  However, they won 5 of the last 6 ends outscoring Redhill 12 - 2 to win by 3 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 66  Redhill 44  Epsom 8 points  Redhill 2 points

Did you know

Epsom last played Redhill in 1987 & 1988 in the East Surrey League, but they then withdrew from playing in this competition.  They were readmitted for the 2023 season in Division 2.

 

Bowls England Tony Allcock Trophy

Epsom travelled to Croydon on Friday 12th May 2023 to play in the Bowls England Tony Allcock Trophy.  This is a 2 rink mixed Competition. They lost on both rinks & the match 17 - 37.

Tony Allcock Trophy

This Competition started in 2011. Epsom have played every year (except COVID year).  Epsom have played 18 times & won 9 games & lost 9. Epsom have reached the third round on 2 occasions – 2025 & 2019.

 

East Surrey League - Men

Epsom men played their second league match of the season in the ESL away against Caterham on Sunday 7th May 2023. They won on all rinks winning 82 - 47 (10 - 0).

Epsom led 16 - 7 after 10 ends & 25 - 12 after 17 ends.  They won by 14 shots.

Rink 2  Stefan Tomm Frank Thompson Phil Sims Les Owen  won 23 - 13

Epsom led 11 - 0 after 6 ends & 16 - 12 after 17 ends.  They won 3 of the last 4 ends to win by 10 shots.

Rink 3  Paul Maskell Bob Blaker David Bragg Jim Scott  won 30 - 19

Epsom were 11 - 12 down on end 10, but led 19 - 17 after 15 ends.  They outscored Caterham 11 - 2 over the last 6 ends to win by 11 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 82  Caterham 47   Epsom 10 points  Caterham 0 points

Did you know

Epsom last played Caterham in the league in 2014 (Epsom won 108 – 41). Since then the Clubs have met 29 times, won 18, lost 9 & drawn 1. One game was abandoned.

Paul Maskell played his very first league match for Epsom Bowling Club in this match & becomes the 167th member to represent the Club in the East Surrey League. Peter Miller holds the record for the most appearances in the ESL - 316.

 

Bowls England Top Club (Top 11)

Epsom men travelled to Shirley Park to play in the B E Top Club.  They won the Two Wood, drew the Triples, lost the Singles, Pairs & Fours.

Singles: Ted Ray lost 13 - 22

After 9 ends Ted trailed 6 - 11 & lost by 9 shots

Two Wood: Phil Sims  won 15 - 11

This was a close game with the scores level 7 - 7 after 11 ends, 10 - 10 after 15 ends, but Phil won the last 3 ends to win by 4 shots.

Pairs: Keith Roberts Peter Miller lost 12 - 22

Epsom led 8 - 7 after 8 ends, but lost the next 5 ends to go 8 - 20 down.  They lost by 10 shots.

Triples: David Fearn Brian Collis  Wayne Thornton drew 13 - 13

Epsom were 7 - 10 down after 8 ends & 9 - 13 behind after 13 ends. They won the next 2 ends to tie the rink.

Fours: Stefan Tomm John Hart Martin Harbottle Les Owen lost 13 - 21

Epsom were 8 - 15 down on end 10 & lost by 8 shots.

Final Score:

Epsom 1½ Shirley Park 3½

NB Under normal circumstances all disciplines should be continued to a result.  As the game had been decided with the loss of the Singles, Pairs & Fours late on the Triples decided to leave the game as a draw.

Did you know

Brian Collis & Phil Sims played their very first match in this Competition for Epsom Bowling Club.

 

Epsom first played in this Competition in 2004. Since then they have played 36 matches, won 19, lost 17 & 1 game was conceded.

 

Ladies Friendly - Result not in

Epsom ladies played their very first friendly match of the season against Supreme at home on Thursday 4th May 2023.  They won on 1 rink, lost on the second & lost overall 20 - 31.  The game stopped after 13/14 ends because of the poor condition of the green.

Did you know

The first recorded match v Supreme was in 2007. Since then the Clubs have played each other 12 times with Epsom winning 4, losing 8 & there have been 4 games cancelled.

Last season Epsom Ladies played 11 friendly matches, won 7 & lost 4.

 

Men' Friendly

Epsom men played their very first friendly match of the season against Chipstead at home.  They won on both rinks & the match 47 - 30.

Details:

Rink 1  Brian Kenyon Geoff Purrott Frank Thompson Stefan Tomm  won 26 - 14

The scores were level 9 - 9 after 10 ends, but Epsom were 14 - 13 ahead on end 15.  They finished strongly & won by 12 shots.

Rink 2  Paul Maskell Derek Martin Mick Cooper David Bragg  won 21 - 16

Epsom were 8 - 9 down on 10 ends, but were level, 13 - 13 on end 15.  They won by 5 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 47  Chipstead 30.

Did you know

The first recorded friendly match against Chipstead was in 1994.  Since then Epsom have played Chipstead 24 times, won 12, lost 11 & drawn 1. (4 games were cancelled in this period).

 

Ladies Friendly

Unfortunately Chipstead could only bring 4 ladies so 2 Epsom players played for Chipstead to make up 2 Triples. This will not be regarded as a friendly fixture for the records.

 

East Surrey League - Men

Epsom men played their very first match of the season in the ESL against Shirley Park at home.  This was an excellent start having been relegated from Division 1 in 2022. They won on 2 rinks, lost on 1 rink & won overall 63 - 56 (8 - 2).

Details:

This was a game of 2 halves with Epsom leading 19 - 5 after 10 ends.  Shirley Park came back well, but Epsom held on to win by 6 shots.

Rink 2  Phil Sims Bob Blaker Andrew Turnbull Martin Harbottle  lost 15 - 18

Epsom led 8 - 5 after 10 ends & 13 - 9 after 15 ends. They still led 15 - 12 on end 18, but lost the last 3 ends to lose by 3 shots.

Epsom were 9 - 12 down after 10 ends & were still behind 15 - 19 after 16 ends.  They won the last 5 ends to win by 4 shots.
