Ladies' Friendly

Epsom Ladies played Ember on Thursday 31st May in a two rink Triples match. They won on 1 rink, lost on the other 1 & won overall 43 - 23.

Details:

Rink 1  Audrey Jones  Heather Pigden  Anne Hoffmann  lost 11 - 16

After 8 ends Epsom was 4 - 11 down, but came back well to be just 2 shots behind (10 - 12) after 14 ends.  However, they lost the last 4 ends losing by 5 shots.

Rink 2  Lesley South  Ruth Baker  Sylvia Smart  won 32 - 7

Epsom was 2 - 5 down after 4 ends, but won the next 7 ends picking up a total of 19 shots to go ahead 21 - 5.  Ember only scored 2 more shots leaving Epsom winners by 25 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 43  Ember 23

 

Windeler Cup

The Annual Inter Club Windeler Cup took place on Monday 28th May 2018.  This turned out to be a very successful afternoon.  27 members turned up to play. There was a round Robin competition to start ending up with a 5 end Final.  The Final result  went down to the very last bowl.

Details:

Rink 3  Vic Phillips  Bob Lister John Warren v Lesley South  George Sperring  Brian Kenyon.

Brian's team picked 3 doubles on the first 3 ends, but John then drew 3 excellent bowls on the fourth to be 3 - 6 down.  On the final end John's team were holding 4 shots to snatch the win, but Brian with the very last bowl picked up the jack to score 4 shots.

Final Score:  John's team 3  Brian's team 10

Lesley South wins her very first trophy at Epsom Bowling Club.

Brian Kenyon wins the Windeler Cup for the third time - 2000/2010 & 2018

George Sperring also wins the Windeler Cup for the third time - 1998/2016 & 2018

Men's Friendly

Epsom Men played a Triples match at home against Redhill on Sunday 26th May 2018 and won a thrilling match 55 - 49. This was a very close match right up until the last few ends.  The scores were level 37 - 37 after 14 ends & still level 46 - 46 on the 16th end. Epsom outscored Redhill 24 - 17 over the last 5 ends to win by 6 shots.

Details:

Rink 1  Bill Lawrence  Dave Pearce  Bob Blaker  won 19 - 18

Epsom was 5 - 7 down after 9 ends, but then won the next 4 ends scoring a total of 9 shots to go ahead 14 - 7.  On the 14th & 15th ends Epsom dropped two 5's to go behind 14 - 17.  Going into the last end Epsom was 16 - 18 down, but scored the 3 shots for a win.

Rink 2  Vic Phillips  Brian Kenyon  Pat Buckley  lost 19 - 21

Epsom started poorly finding themselves 1 - 10 down after just 5 ends.  They were still well behind 10 - 20 on the 15th end, but scored 6 shots on the next end followed by a count of 3.  On the last end Epsom were holding 4 shots with the Redhill skip to play his last bowl.  He picked up the jack leaving Epsom losing by 2 shots.

Rink 3  Frank Thompson  Phil Sims  John Hart  won 17 - 10

Epsom played well on this rink & were ahead all afternoon.  They led 10 - 6 after 10 ends, 14 - 7 on the 15th end & won by 7 shots.

Final score:  Epsom 55 Redhill 49

Epsom remain unbeaten in Men's Friendly matches winning all 5 games.

 

Men's ESL League

Epsom Men played Shirley Park at home in their third ESL League match on Saturday 26th May 2018. They They won on 3 rinks, lost on 1 rink & won overall 72 - 62 (10 - 2). As the final score suggests this was a very close match. After 5 ends across the 4 rinks Epsom was 5 shots adrift, but went ahead by 5 shots after 15 ends.  It all got very close on 18 ends when Epsom had just a 1 shot lead, but managed to outplay Shirley Park over the last 3 ends to win by 10 shots. The closest win against Shirley Park came in 1988 when Epsom won by 3 shots (75 - 72).

Shirley Park were promoted from Division 2 for 2018.  Epsom had won their last 5 matches against Shirley Park (2014 - 2016).

Details:

This was a very close game all afternoon. Epsom was 12 - 14 down after 15 ends, but went ahead 16 - 15 on the 18th end. Going into the last end Epsom had a 1 shot advantage & scored 3 shots to win by 4 shots.

Rink 3  Brian Kenyon Simon Meller John Huxford Peter Miller  lost 12 - 21

Epsom struggled on this rink finding themselves 9 - 13 down after 15 ends.  They lost by 9 shots.

Rink 4  Dave Pearce Keith Roberts  John Meningen Terry Berry  won 20 - 14

Epsom played well on this rink, but were behind going into the 12th end.  However, they picked up 5 shots on this end to take the lead and led for the rest of the afternoon.  They won by 6 shots.

Rink 5  Stefan Tomm John Hart Bob Blaker Jim Scott  won 20 - 11

Epsom started well & led 10 - 1 after 5 ends. They still led 14 - 8 after 10 ends, but then failed to score for 6 ends.  However, they came back well over the last few ends to win by 9 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 72  Shirley Park 62   Epsom 10 points  Shirley Park 2 points

 

Men's Friendly

Epsom Men played a Triples match at Purley on Thursday 25th May 2018 and won on 2 rinks, lost on the third and won overall 58 - 37.

Details:

Rink 3  Bill Lawrence Phil Sims John Hart  lost 14 - 15

Epsom led 9 - 6 after 10 ends, but the scores were level, 12 - 12 on the 14th end.  The last 4 ends were evenly contested, but Epsom just lost by 1 shot.

Rink 4  Jim Martin  Brian Collis  David Bragg  won 21 - 10

Epsom dominated this Triple all afternoon.  They led 14 - 2 after 10 ends, 19 - 7 after 15 ends & went on to win by 11 shots.

Rink 5  Frank Thompson  Fred Read Keith Roberts    won 23 - 12

A similar situation to rink 4 here with Epsom leading 12 - 5 after 10 ends, 21 - 7 after 15 ends and winning by 11 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 58  Purley 37

 

Mixed Friendly

Epsom played Epsom Park on Wednesday 23rd May 2018. This was a two rink & 2 triples match.  Epsom won 73 - 56.

Details:

Rink 1  Audrey Jones  Janet Newman  Brian Kenyon  David Bragg  won 20 - 16

After 13 ends Epsom was 9 - 16 down, but won all the remaining ends scoring a total of 11 shots to win by 4 shots.

Rink 2  Lesley South  Stefan Tomm  Brian Collis  Bob Blaker  won 17 - 12

Epsom led 8 - 6 after 10 ends, but going into the last end they only led by one shot.  Epsom scored 4 shots on the last end to win by 5 shots.

Rink 3  Mick Cooper  Derek Martin  Frank Thompson  won 21 - 8

Epsom raced into a 13 - 1 lead after 8 ends and continued to out play Epsom Park going on to win by 13 shots.

Rink 4  Sandy Cooper  Sylvia Smart  Geoff Purrott  lost 15 - 20

Epsom was behind 3 - 12 after 9 ends, but came back to within 4 shots on the 14th end (11 - 15).  They lost by 5 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 73  Epsom Park 56

 

Ladies' Friendly

Epsom Ladies travelled to Banstead Neville on Tuesday 22nd May to play in a three rink Triples match. They drew on 1 rink, lost on the other 2 & lost overall 48 - 55.

Details:

Rink 2  Sandy Cooper  Ruth Nixon  Heather Pigden  lost 16 - 21

After 9 ends Epsom was 6 - 14 down & further behind 9 - 20 on the 15th end.  They won 2 of the remaining 3 ends scoring a total of 7 shots, but lost overall by 5 shots.

Rink 3  Eileen Mills  Frances Suttonwood  Anne Hoffmann  lost 15 - 17

The scores were level 11 - 11 after 12 ends, but Epsom then went ahead 15 - 12 on the 15th end.  However, they lost the last 3 ends dropping 5 shots to lose by 2.

Rink 4  Audrey Jones Sandie Harvey  Sylvia Smart  drew 17 - 17

After 9 ends Epsom led 8 - 7 & were still ahead 17 - 12 on the penultimate end.  However, they dropped 5 shots on the last end to end with a draw.

Final Score:  Epsom 48  Banstead Neville 55

 

Club Open Day

Epsom held an Open Day on Sunday 20th May 2018. Several members of the public dropped in to give bowls a try.  Several current members turned up to play during the session and a large number of members gave up their time to lay on refreshments & show visitors the basics of the game.

The Mayor of Epsom, Councillor Neil Dallen & his wife attended.  They both had a 'go' on the green and enjoyed Epsom's facilities.

Bowls England Top Club (Top 11)

Epsom played Carshalton at home on Wednesday 16th May in the BE Top Club (Top 11). They won the Two Wood  Singles, the 4 Wood Singles & Pairs.  They lost narrowly in the Triples & Fours.

Details:

Rink 6 Two Wood: Bob Blaker won 14 - 13 (extra end)

This was a great win for Bob as he trailed right up to the 19th end.  He was 4 - 9 down after 10 ends, 7 - 11 behind after 15 ends and 9 - 14 down going into the 20th end.  Bob scored two doubles to make the game go into an extra end. He was short with his first bowl, but put his second right on the jack to win by 1 shot.

Rink 6 Singles: Dave Pearce  won 21 - 16

The scores were level 8 - 8 after 8 ends & level again 12 - 12 after 11 ends. Dave then had 5 good ends to go to win by 5 shots.

Rink 4 Pairs: Howard Ellis  Graham Naish  won 25 - 19

Epsom was 8 - 9 down after 10 ends, but they then won the next 4 ends scoring a total of 13 shots to go ahead 18 - 9.  They went on to win by 10 shots.

Rink 5  Triples: Simon Meller John Meningen Terry Berry  lost 20 - 21

The scores were level 12 - 12 after 10 ends, but Epsom then fell behind 12 - 18 on the 12th end.  Going into the last end Epsom needed 3 to tie, but only scored 2 shots.

Rink3  Fours: Andrew Turnbull  Martin Harbottle John Huxford Peter Miller  lost 17 - 18

Epsom started well when they led 12 - 7 after 10 ends.  They still had a good lead, 16 - 8 after 15 ends, but allowed Carshalton back into the game.  Going into the last end the scores were level 17 - 17 & Epsom dropped 1 shot.

Final Score:  Epsom 3  Carshalton 2   Epsom 97  Carshalton 83

Dave Pearce & Simon Meller played in their very first game in this Competition.

Epsom are at home to Croydon in the next round.

 

Ladies' Friendly

Epsom Ladies travelled to Malden Manor on Tuesday 15th May to play in a two rink Triples match. They won on 1 rink, lost on the other & won overall 37 - 29.

Details:

Rink 2  Sandra Huxford  Frances Suttonwood  Anne Hoffmann  won 23 - 7

After 8 ends Epsom led 9 - 2 and then won the next 5 ends to go further ahead 18 - 2.  They went on to win by 16 shots.

Rink 3  Lesley South  Ruth Baker  Sylvia Smart  lost 14 - 22

Epsom had a disastrous start when they found themselves 0 - 16 down after 9 ends.  On the next end they picked up a count of 8 which got them back into the game. They lost by 8 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 37  Malden Manor 29

 

Bowls England Two Fours

Epsom travelled to Old Coulsdon on Monday 14th May to play in the BE Two Fours. They lost on both rinks & the match 26 - 44.  The score does not really reflect the way Epsom played.  There were many ends when Epsom held multiple counts only to be beaten by excellent play from the Old Coulsdon Skips.

Epsom made a slow start finding themselves 1 - 13 down after 7 ends.  On the 15th end they came within 4 shots of Old Coulsdon, but fell away again to lose by 13 shots.

Rink 11  Dave Pearce  Andrew Turnbull  John Meningen  Terry Berry  lost 13 - 18

Epsom played well on this rink all evening.  They were level 11 - 11 after 15 ends, but like rink 10 lost their way over the remaining ends.  They lost by 5 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 26  Old Coulsdon 44

 

Mixed Friendly

Epsom played the Insurance BA at home  on Sunday 13th May 2018. They won on two rinks, drew on one rink, lost on the fourth.  They won 100 - 71.

Details:

Epsom was 5 - 11 down after 10 ends, but drew level 15 - 15 after 15 ends. Going into the last end Epsom was one shot adrift, but managed to score 1 shot to earn a draw.

Rink 2  Audrey Jones David Ganney Geoff Purrott  Cyril Newman  lost 18 - 29

Epsom struggled for the first 10 ends when they were 5 - 18 down. They came back into the game mid way through, but fell away again over the last few ends.  They lost by 11 shots.

Rink 3  Bill Lawrence  Trish Southgate  Ruth Baker  John Warren  won 37 - 13

Epsom dominated this rink all afternoon.  They led 16 - 7 after 10 ends, 28 - 10 after 15 ends & went on to win by 24 shots.

Rink 5  Sandie Harvey Frances Suttonwood Frank Thompson Bob Blaker  won 28 - 12

Epsom led 14 - 3 after 10 ends & 20 - 11 after 15 ends.  They went on to win by 16 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 100  Insurance BA 71

 

Men's ESL League

Epsom Men played Sutton at home in their second ESL League match of the season on Saturday 12th May 2018 and won on 2 rinks, lost on 2 rinks and won overall 87 - 67 (8 - 4).  The game was played in pouring rain with Epsom ahead across the 4 rinks all afternoon.  They led by 17 shots after 12 ends finally winning by 20 shots.

This rink started well going into a 14 - 3 lead after 10 ends.  They still had a good lead 19 - 8 after 15 ends, but allowed Sutton to come back into the game over the last few ends.  They won by 7 shots.

Rink 3  Howard Ellis  Phil Sims  John Huxford  Graham Naish  lost 18 - 22

The scores were level 10 - 10 after 10 ends, but Epsom went behind 12 - 15 after 13 ends.  They regained the lead two ends later 17 - 15, but Sutton had the better of the last few ends to beat Epsom by 4 shots.

Rink 4  Stefan Tomm  John Hart  Martin Harbottle  John Warren  won 28 - 10

Epsom had an excellent game on this rink being in control all afternoon.  They led 15 - 6 after 10 ends,

18 - 9 after 15 ends & went on to win by 18 shots.

Rink 5  Brian Kenyon  Geoff Purrott  Simon Meller  Peter Miller  lost 17 - 18

Epsom raced into a 9 - 0 lead after just 6 ends, but Sutton came back well to take the lead 12 - 9 after 12 ends.  Going into the last end Epsom was 3 shots adrift, but only managed to score 2 shots to lose by just 1 shot.

Final Score:  Epsom 87  Sutton 67  Epsom 8 points  Sutton 4 points

 

President v Captain

The Annual match between the President's Team & the Captain's Team took place on Monday 7th May 2018.  33 members turned up to play in glorious sunshine.  Five rinks were in use and the President's team ran out winners 87 - 72. The won on 3 rinks & lost on 2.

This rink raced into a 17 - 1 lead after 10 ends, but the Captain's team came back well, but still lost by 10 shots.

The President's team led all afternoon.  They led 10 - 5 after 10 ends & won by 11 shots.

Men's ESL League

Epsom Men played Purley Bury at home in their very first ESL League match of the season on Sunday 6th May 2018 and won on 3 rinks, lost on the fourth & won overall 91 - 75 (10 - 2).  This was the 7th match in a row that Epsom have beaten Purley Bury.

Details:

Rink 2  Brian Kenyon  Andrew Turnbull  Simon Meller  Peter Miller  lost 20 - 27

Epsom was struggling in the first half of this game finding themselves 10 - 15 behind after 12 ends.  However, they fought back well to be just 1 shot down (16 - 17) on the 15th end.  Purley Bury then had the better of the remaining ends leaving Epsom losing by 7 shots.

Rink 3  Stefan Tomm  Phil Sims  John Warren  Jim Scott  won 25 - 10

This was an excellent performance by Epsom on this rink.  They led 15 - 5 after 10 ends, 22 - 6 after 15 ends and despite losing the last 4 ends they won by 15 shots.

Rink 4  Howard Ellis  Martin Harbottle  John Huxford  Graham Naish  won 26 - 19

The scores were level 13 - 13 after 10 ends, but Epsom went behind 16 - 17 on the 15th end.  However, Epsom scored a total of 8 shots over ends 16, 17 & 18 to take the lead 24 - 17.  They won by 7 shots.

Rink 5  Dave Pearce  Bob Blaker  John Meningen  Terry Berry  won 20 - 19

This was a real topsy turvy game with Epsom 10 - 11 down after 12 ends and further behind 13 - 18 on the 17th end. Epsom fought back well to go ahead 19 - 18 on the 19th end, but allowed Purley Bury to draw level going into the last end. Facing a rink loss Terry with his first bowl got the shot & the opposing skip could not find a way in leaving Epsom winners by just 1 shot.

Final Score:  Epsom 91  Purley Bury 75  Epsom 10 points  Purley Bury 2 points

 

Men's Friendly

Epsom Men travelled to Carshalton Beches to play a Friendly Triples match on Saturday 5th May 2018.  They won on 3 rinks lost on one rink & won overall 75 - 58. It was not until the 15th & 16th end that Epsom took control.  They trailed by 5 shots overall after 13 ends, but over ends 15 & 16 Epsom scored 22 shots without reply across the 4 rinks.  Epsom went on to win by 17 shots.

Epsom was behind all afternoon.  They trailed 7 - 13 after 10 ends, 8 - 18 after 15 ends & lost by 11 shots.

Rink 2  Stefan Tomm  Phil Sims  John Warren  won 20 - 11

This was a very close game up until 13 ends when Epsom was 1 shot adrift, 10 - 11.  However, Epsom won the last 5 ends to win by 9 shots.

Rink 3  Bill Lawrence  Pat Buckley  Martin Harbottle  won 22 - 8

Epsom's Triple really played well on this rink.  They led 12 - 3 after 10 ends, 13 - 8 after 14 ends and won the remaining 4 ends to win by 14 shots.

Rink 4  Howard Ellis  Frank Thompson  John Hart  won 22 - 17

This was also a close game for 13 ends when the scores were level 15 - 15.  Epsom immediately took the lead by winning the next 3 ends to go ahead 22 - 15.  They won by 5 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 75  Carshalton Beeches 58

 

Ladies' Friendly

Epsom Ladies played away at Chipstead on Sunday 29th April 2018 and won on both rinks. The match was reduced to 14 ends because of the very cold weather.

Details:

Epsom led 10 - 5 after 10 ends & won by 2 shots.

Rink 2  Caroline ? Sylvia Smart  Heather Pigden  won 16 - 4

After 7 ends Epsom led 10 - 2 & went on to win by 12 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 28  Chipstead 14

 

Men's Friendly

Epsom Men played away at Chipstead on Sunday 29th April 2018 and won on 1 rink, lost on 3 rinks but won overall 61 - 57.  The match was reduced to 18 ends because of the very cold weather.

Epsom led 8 - 2 after 8 ends, but then lost the next 6 ends dropping a total of 12 shots to go behind 8 - 14. On the 17th end Epsom picked up 6 shots to level the scores, but dropped 1 shot on the last end to lose by 1 shot.

Epsom was 2 - 5 behind after 7 ends, but then scored on every end for the rest of the game.  They won by 13 shots.

Rink 5  Stefan Tomm  Graham Coleman  Geoff Purrott  Martin Harbottle  lost 15 - 17

Epsom was 7 - 10 down after 9 ends, but won the next 4 ends to go 12 - 10 ahead.  They teen lost the next 3 ends dropping a total of 7 shots to go behind 12 - 17.Epsom won the last two ends & lost by 2 shots.

Rink 6  Bill Lawrence  Keith Roberts  Stefan Lukatschat  John Huxford  lost 13 - 19

Epsom was 9 - 11 behind after 10 ends & further behind 12 - 18 after 15 ends.  They lost by 6 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 61  Chipstead 57

 

Men's Friendly

Epsom Men started the season with a win at Reigate Priory on Saturday 28th April 2018.  Epsom won on 2 rinks, lost on 2 rinks, but won overall 77 - 55.

Details:

Rink 2  Brian Kenyon  Howard Ellis  John Warren  won 19 - 10

Epsom dominated the first half of this game when the led 15 - 1 after 10 ends.  Reigate Priory then won the next 5 ends to narrow the gap to 15 - 8.  Epsom won by 9 shots.

Rink 3  Brian Collis  Frank Thompson  John Hart  lost 11 - 26

Epsom was outplayed for most of the afternoon on this rink.  They trailed 7 - 15 after 10 ends finally losing by 15 shots.

Rink 4  Stefan Tomm  Andrew Turnbull  Martin Harbottle  won 36 - 7

Quite the opposite to rink 3 with Epsom going into a 23 - 2 lead after 10 ends.  They continued to dominate the game running out winners by 29 shots.

Rink 5  Bill Lawrence  Keith Roberts  Peter Miller  lost 11 - 12

After 10 ends Epsom was behind 4 - 7 & went further behind 5 - 12 after 14 ends.  Epsom won the last 4 ends, but fell short by just 1 shot.

Final Score:  Epsom 77  Reigate Priory 55
