East Surrey League - Mid Week Triples

Epsom played away their very first game in this league in 2023 at home against Old Coulsdon. They drew on 1 rink, lost on 2 rinks & lost overall 30 - 62 (1 - 9).

Details:

Epsom raced into a 15 - 0 lead after 11 ends, but lost the remaining ends to draw the rink.

Epsom only won on 3 ends & lost by 21 shots.

Epsom were 6 - 13 down after 9 ends & lost by 11 shots.

Ladies Friendly

Epsom Ladies played away against Leatherhead in a 2 rink Triples match on Tuesday 27th June 2023. They lost on both rinks & the match 27 - 36.

Details:

Epsom were 5 - 10 down on end 9 & lost by 8 shots.

Rink 4  Audrey Jones Janet Newman Christine Summerfield  lost 16 - 17

Epsom led 12 - 6 after 9 ends, but were 12 - 15 down on end 12.  They drew level 16 - 16 going into the last end, but dropped 1 shot.

Final Score:  Epsom 27  Leatherhead 36

Did you know

The first recorded match v Leatherhead was in 2007.  Since then the Clubs have met 13 times with Epsom winning 7, Leatherhead winning 5 & there has been 1 drawn match.

This season the Ladies have played 6 matches, won 3 & lost 3.

 

Chrystie League

Epsom played at home against Bookham in their 4th Chrystie League match on Monday 26th June 2023. They won on both rinks & the match 42 - 25 (4 - 0). After 11 ends across the 2 rinks Epsom led by just 1 shot, 19 - 18.  They went on to win by 17 shots.

Epsom led 9 - 3 after 7 ends, but went behind 9 - 10 on end 11.  They were ahead 18 - 10 after 13 ends & went on to win by 4 shots.

The scores were level 8 - 8 after 10 ends, but Epsom won all the remaining ends to win by 13 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 42  Bookham 25   Epsom 4 points  Bookham 0 points.

East Surrey League - Men

Croydon have conceded the ESL match v Epsom.

Epsom have played Croydon 10 times, won 9, lost 1 with 1 game conceded by Croydon.

Epsom have played 7 games this season & won 5, lost 1 & drawn 1. One game has been conceded.

 

East Surrey League - Top Club

Epsom played at home against Dorking in the ESL Top Club on Wednesday 21st June 2023 & won 3 - 2. Epsom won the Singles, Pairs, Fours & lost the Two Wood & Triples.  This game went right down to the last 2 ends of the Fours.

Details:

Rink 2  Singles: Ted Ray  won 21 - 9

Ted led 12 - 6 after 10 ends & 13 - 9 after 14 ends.  He won the next 3 ends to win by 12 shots (17 ends).

Rink 2  Two Wood: Phil Sims lost 8 - 15

The scores were level 6 - 6 after 10 ends, but Phil was behind 8 - 11 on end 15.  He lost the next 4 ends to lose by 7 shots. (19 ends played).

Rink 4  Pairs: David Fearn Wayne Thornton   won 24 - 14

Epsom were 10 - 11 down on end 11, but won the next 5 ends to go ahead 22 - 11.  They won by 10 shots.

Rink 1  Triples: Paul Maskell Mick Cooper  Keith Roberts   lost 5 - 22

Epsom were 3 - 13 down on end 10 & lost by 17 shots (16 ends played).

Rink 3  Fours: John Lystor Brian Collis David Bragg Jim Scott  won 17 - 15

Epsom were 5 - 9 down after 10 ends & 9 - 11 behind on end 14.  They won the next 3 ends to go ahead 15 - 11. The last 2 ends were very tense, but Epsom won by 2 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 3 Dorking 2

Interestingly the number of shots in the game were 75 - 75.

Did you know

This Competition comprises of Two Wood Singles, Four Wood Singles, Pairs, Triples & Fours. This format began in 2018.  Originally this Competition was played as a Top 10 Competition (no Two Wood game). It was brought in line with Bowls England who played a Top 11 in 2018.

The Top 10 Competition started in 1997 & Epsom played 46 matches, won 26 & lost 20.  They won the Top 10 in 2008 beating Warlingham Park 71 – 70. The following current members played in this final – Ted Ray, Stefan Tomm, John Hart, Graham Pilbrow, Les Owen, Martin Harbotle & Peter Miller.

Epsom have lost in 3 Top 10 finals – 2000, 2006 & 2012.

In the Top 11 Competition so far (since 2018) Epsom have played 9 games, won 5 & lost 4.

In the first round Epsom beat Cheam 3 – 2 (they lost both singles, but won the Pairs, Triples & Fours).

Paul Maskell played in his first match in this Competition.

 

Men's Friendly

Epsom played against Leatherhead in a 3 rink Triples match on Tuesday 20th June 2023. They won on 2 rinks, lost on 1 rink & won overall 73 - 32.  After 8 ends across the 3 rinks Epsom led 33 - 12 & went on to win by 41 shots.

Epsom led 16 - 5 after 10 ends & won 5 of the last 6 ends to win by 24 shots.

Epsom led 12 - 6 after 11 ends & won 5 of the last 7 ends to win by 20 shots.

Rink 3  Geoff Purrott Mick Cooper Bob Blaker  lost 15 - 18

The scores were level 7 - 7 after 8 ends & 12 - 12 on end 13.  Epsom led 15 - 13 on end 16, but lost the last 2 ends to lose by 3 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 73  Leatherhead 32

Epsom played against Esher in their 2nd Chrystie League match on Monday 19th June 2023.  They won on both rinks & the match 31 - 29 (4 - 0).  After 14 ends across both rinks Epsom were 19 - 26 down, but went on to win by 2 shots.

Epsom led 8 - 4 after 7 ends, but lost the next 6 ends to go 8 - 14 behind. They won 4 of the remaining ends to win by just 1 shot.

Epsom were 4 - 7 down after 9 ends & 6 - 12 behind on end 12.  They won 5 of the last 6 ends to also win by just 1 shot.

Final Score:  Epsom 31  Esher 29   Epsom 4 points  Esher 0 points.

Surrey County Bowling Association - Area 3 Top 4

Epsom A travelled to play Old Coulsdon on Saturday 17th June 2023 to play in the Area 3 Top 4 Competition.  They lost 13 - 21.

Surrey is divided into 4 Areas.  Each Area has 2 sections. Epsom is in Area 3 Division 5.

Epsom have entered the Area competition for many years- usually entering 2 teams.  This competition only allows 1 badged player to play in the rink, but does necessarily need to include a badged player.

In the early rounds the games are played within the Area i.e. Epsom will play teams in Area 3 Division 5/6. A winner in each Area then plays each other in a Final.

Epsom B have had a walk over in the first round.

Epsom were 6 - 11 down after 9 ends & 13 - 15 behind on end 14.  They lost the next 3 ends & lost by 8 shots.

Men's Friendly

Epsom men travelled to play Wallington in a friendly triples match on Thursday 15th June 2023.  They won on all three rinks & the match 74 - 30. Epsom led all afternoon across the three rinks.  They led 37 - 14 after 9 ends & went on to won by 44 shots.

Details:

Epsom led 14 - 6 after 9 ends, but lost the next 3 ends to lead by just 1 shot (14 - 13).  However, they won all the remaining ends to win by 12 shots.

Epsom led 13 - 4 after 9 ends & won the next 6 ends to go further ahead 21 - 4.  They won by 14 shots.

Rink 4  Paul Maskell Phil Sims Keith Roberts  won 27 - 9

Epsom led 10 - 4 after 9 ends & outscored Wallington 17 - 5 over the remaining ends to win by 18 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 74  Wallington 30

Epsom men travelled the short distance to play Chessington in a friendly triples match on Wednesday 14th June 2023.  They won on 2 rinks, lost on 1 rink & won 48 - 39. (16 ends played).

After 8 ends Epsom were 3 - 10 down & lost by 7 shots.

Epsom led 10 -3 after 8 ends & went on to win by 8 shots.

The first recorded men’s friendly match against Chessington was in 1993. Since then the Clubs have met 27 times, won 19, lost 6 & 2 games have been cancelled.

Bowls England Top Club

Epsom ladies travelled to Purley Bury to play in the BE Top Club on Monday 12th June 2023. They won the singles & Triples, lost the Pairs & Fours & lost overall on shots 65 - 80.

Singles: Fi Drinkall won 21 - 20 (no details available)

Pairs: Penny Payne Christine Summerfield  lost 11 - 23 (17 nds)

Epsom were 8 - 10 down on end 9 then lost the next 4 ends to go further behind 8 - 21.  They lost by 12 shots.

Triples: Trish Southgate Ruth Baker Mary Green  won 20 - 14

Epsom led 11 - 9 after 9 ends & 17 - 13 after 15 ends.  They won by 6 shots.

Fours: Liz Hind Janet Newman Frances Suttonwood Sandy Cooper  lost 13 - 23

Epsom were 6 - 11 down on end 9. They won 4 of the last  ends but lost by 10 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 2  Purley Bury 2   Epsom 65  Purley Bury 80

Liz Hind played in her very first match in this Competition.

Epsom men travelled to Brockham on Monday 12th June 2023 & won on both rinks & the match 40 - 27 (4 - 0).

Over the last 7 ends Epsom outscored Brockham 21 - 6.

Epsom led 9 - 7 after 9 ends, but went behind 14 - 16 on end 14.  However, they won the last 4 ends to win by 5 shots.

Epsom were 7 - 9 down after 9 ends, but won the next 6 ends to go ahead 19 - 9.  They won by 8 shots.

Did you know

Epsom have played Brockham 41 times, won 26, lost 14 & there has been 1 game drawn.  This was Epsom's 200th match in the Chrystie League.

 

East Surrey League - Ladies

Epsom ladies travelled to Horley to play in their second ESLL match on Sunday 11th June 2023. They won on both rinks & the match 43 - 20 (4 - 0).

Epsom led 10 - 9 after 10 ends then won the next 5 ends to go further ahead 18 - 9.  They won by 8 shots.

Epsom led 20 - 4 after 12 ends & went on to win by 15 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 43  Horley 20   Epsom 4 points  Horley 0 points.

Epsom ladies have played Horley 17 times in this league & won 13, lost 4 this is the 185th match in this league with Epsom ladies winning 93 matches, losing 88 & there have been 4 drawn games.  In this period 5 games have been cancelled.

Karen Wellard played in her very first ESLL match for Epsom in this game.

 

East Surrey League - Men

Epsom men travelled to Croydon MO's to play in the ESL on Saturday 10th June 2023. They won on 1 rink, lost on 2 rinks & lost the match 50 - 64 (2 - 8). After 10 ends across the 3 rinks Epsom led 28 - 21, but were 1 shot behind on ends 15 (41 - 42).  The remaining ends went in Croydon MO's favour leaving Epsom losing by 14 shots.

Epsom were 10 - 4 ahead after 10 ends & 19 - 10 ahead on end 15.  They won by 7 shots.

Epsom led 13 - 5 after 10 ends, but won only 2 of the remaining ends to lose by 11 shots.

Epsom were 3 - 12 down after 10 ends & 8 - 19 behind after 15 ends.  They lost by 10 shots.

Did you know

This was the very first time for Epsom to play Croydon MO’S in the East Surrey League. Croydon MO’S were admitted into Division 2 in 2017.

The Croydon Municipal Officers Bowling Club was formed in 1907 by several council staff. Early fixtures included Bensham Manor, Master Bakers, Sutton, Erith, Metropolitan Police, Bethlem Hospital, Croydon to name a few. In 1934 the club move to Waddon Wells where they are today.

Epsom have met Croydon MO’S on just 1 other occasion.  This was in the ESL Top Club competition in 2022. Epsom won 3 – 2.

 

Ladies Friendly

Epsom played against Carshalton in a 2 rink Triples match on Thursday 8th June 2023. They won on both rinks & the match 29 - 24.

After 9 ends Epsom led 10 - 8 & 13 - 10 after 14 ends.  They lost the last 2 ends, but won by 1 shot.

Epsom led 10 - 4 after 9 ends & 13 - 10 after 13 ends.  They won the last 2 ends to win by 4 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 29  Carshalton 24

Did you know

The first recorded ladies friendly match against Carshalton was in 2007. Since then the Clubs have met 9 times, won 6, lost 3 & there have been 6 games cancelled. 

Unfortunately the records for Ladies Friendly matches were not recorded before 2007.  Since then the ladies have played 214 matches, won 111, lost 99 & drawn 4.  In this period 51 matches have been cancelled.

Epsom played against the Surrey Past President on Wednesday 7th June 2023.  Epsom won on 2 rinks, lost on 4 rinks & lost overall 98 - 128.  After 10 ends across the 6 rinks the scores were level 51 - 51.  However, Epsom were33 shots down after 15 ends & lost by 30 shots.

Epsom led 7 - 6 after 8 ends, but lost the next 7 ends to go 7 - 20 down.  They lost by 13 shots.

Epsom were 6 - 10 down on the 10th end & 9 - 19 behind on end 16.  They won all the remaining ends & lost by 1 shot.

Did you know

This is the first time that Epsom have played a Surrey Past President's Team.  Martin Harbottle is the immediate Surrey Past President (and our President) & he has brought a team to play us at Epsom.  Over the years Epsom have played the Surrey Patrons - the first time in 2004 & since then there have been 14 matches with Epsom winning 10, losing 3 & there has been one draw.

In 2009 (our Centenary Year) the Surrey President brought a team to play Epsom (which Epsom won) & they re visited in 2019 when Epsom lost.

Ray Evans & Geoff Virgo played in their very first friendly game for Epsom in this match.

 

Mixed Friendly

Epsom played their first Mixed Friendly match of the season at home against Malden Manor on Tuesday 6th June 2023. They won on 2 rinks, lost on 1 rink & won overall 54 - 37.

Epsom led 9 - 4 after 9 ends & 13 - 10 after 15 ends.  They won by 4 shots.

Epsom led 14 - 5 after 9 ends & won 6 of the last 7 ends to win by 17 shots.

Epsom were level 10 - 10 on end 14, lost the next 3 ends to go behind 10 - 17.  They lost by 4 shots.

The first recorded mixed friendly match against Malden Manor was in 2013. Since then the Clubs have met 9 times, won 8 & lost 1. 

The first recorded Mixed Friendly match was in 1991 when Epsom played just 1 match. Since then Epsom have played 225 matches, won 127, lost 93 & drawn 5. In 2016 Epsom played 13 Friendly games & won them all.

 

Chrystie League

Epsom men played their first Chrystie League match of the season at home against Pippbrook on Monday 5th June 2023. They lost on both rinks & the match 23 - 28 (0 - 4).

Epsom led 8 - 6 after 9 ends, but were level 10 - 10 on end 13.  They lost all the remaining ends & to lose 10 - 17.  However, Pippbrook only had 3 players on this rink so the scores were altered to 10 - 14.

Epsom led 11 - 2 after 9 ends & 13 - 10 after 15 ends.  They lost the last 3 ends to lose by 1 shot.

Bowls England - Ladies Top Club

Epsom ladies played at home in the B E Top Club on Sunday 4th June 2023.  They won the Singles, Pairs, Fours & lost the Triples.  They won overall 3- 1.

Details:

Singles: Fi Drinkall  won 21 - 7

Fi led 9 - 4 after 9 ends & won the next 4 ends to go further ahead 18 - 4.  She won by 14 shots.

Pairs: Penny Payne Christine Summerfield  won 17 - 12

Epsom led 9 - 8 after 8 ends & won the next 4 ends to lead 15 - 8.  With the overall result decided Old Coulsdon conceded after 16 ends. Epsom won by 5 shots.

Triples: Trish Southgate Ruth Baker Mary Green  lost 13 - 20

Epsom were 2 - 10 down after 9 ends, but closed the gap 3 ends later to 9 - 10.  The scores were level 11 - 11 on end 14 & then Epsom went ahead 13 - 11 on the next end.  However, they dropped 9 shots over the last 3 ends to lose by 7 shots.

Fours: Sandy Cooper Janet Newman Sue Skinner Frances Suttonwood  won 19 - 16

Epsom were 3 - 6 down after 4 ends, but they won the next 5 ends to go 15 - 9 ahead.  They won by 3 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 3  Old Coulsdon 1

Janet Newman played in her first match in this competition.  She becomes the 41st lady to represent Epsom Bowling Club in this Bowls England game.

 

East Surrey League - Men

Epsom men travelled to Bletchingley to play in the ESL on Saturday 3rd June 2023. They won on 2 rinks, drew on 1 rink & won overall 71 - 42 (9 - 1). Epsom led all afternoon across the 3 rinks.  They led 39 - 14 after 10 ends & won by 29 shots.

Epsom led 14 - 3 after 10 ends, but the scores were level 16 - 16 on end 19.  The rink was tied.

Epsom led 15 - 4 after 9 ends & won the next 6 ends to go further ahead 27 - 5.  They won by 27 shots.

Epsom led 8 - 7 after 10 ends, but the scores were level 13 - 13 on end 15.  Epsom then went 13 - 18 behind on end 18, but won the last 3 ends to win by 2 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 71  Bletchingley 42   Epsom 9 points  Bletchingley 1 point.

Bletchingley joined the league at the same time as Epsom in 1986.  Since then the Clubs have met 30 times with Epsom winning 25, losing 3 with 2 games being abandoned.

 

Ladies Friendly

Epsom ladies travelled to Bletchingley to play a friendly 1 rink Triples match.  They won 22 - 20.
