Men's Friendly v Chessington

Epsom travelled the short distance to Chessington to play in a 2 rink Triples.  They won on 1 rink, lost on 1 rink & won the match 33 - 28.

Details:

Rink 2 David Fearn Wayne Thornton Terry Hoye  won 18 - 12

After 9 ends Epsom led 7 - 6, but went behind 11 - 12 on the 14th end.  However, they won the last 4 ends to win by 6 shots.

Rink 3 Hayden Thornton Phil Sims Brian Kenyon   lost 15 - 16

Epsom led 6 - 5 after 8 ends, but were behind 11 - 13 on the 15th end.  They took the lead again 14 - 13 on the 16th end, but dropped 3 shots on the next end.  They lost by 1 shot.

Final Score:  Epsom 33  Chessington 28

Did you know

Epsom first played Chessington in a Friendly match in 1993.  Since then 26 matches have been played with Epsom winning 20 & losing 6.

 

Chrystie League

Epsom played away in the Chrystie League against Brockham on Monday 28th June 2021.  won on 1 rink, lost on 1 rink & won overall 33 - 26.  This was the first win for Epsom this season.

After 9 ends Epsom was 6 - 7 down, & further behind 9 - 17 on the 15th end.  They lost by 7 shots.

Rink 3  Mike James Frank Thompson Ted Ray Fred Read  won 22 - 8

Epsom led 9 - 5 after 9 ends & won 6 of the remaining ends to win by 14 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 33  Brockham 26    Epsom 3 points  Brockham 1 point

Did you know

Epsom have played Brockham 37 times, won 22, lost 14, drawn 1 & there have been 2 games cancelled.

Since the league began Epsom have played 183 matches, won 105, lost 73, drawn 5 & there have been 10 cancelled matches.

In this game Fred Read became the first Epsom member to make 100 appearances in the Chrystie League.

East Surrey League - Men

Epsom Men played away against Croydon on Saturday 26th June 2021 & won on all 3 rinks & the match 80 - 41 (10 - 0). After 10 ends across the 3 rinks Epsom led by 24 shots & went on to win by 39 shots.

After 9 ends Epsom led 17 - 1 & led 21 - 7 after 15 ends.  They went on to win by 18 shots.

Epsom led 10 - 6 after 10 ends, 14 - 12 after 15 ends & won by 4 shots.

Epsom led 13 - 7 after 10 ends & won 8 of the remaining ends to win by 17 shots.

Did you know

Croydon Bowling Club is one of the oldest in the country and was first founded in 1749. The first green was situated behind the Three Tuns Inn close to Surrey Street, where it stayed until 1907. The club moved to a new site behind Croydon High Street and remained there until 1920 when a new 2 acre site in South Croydon was purchased, the club’s present location. The indoor pavilion offering six rinks was opened in 1930. In addition, there are 14 outdoor rinks surrounded by beautiful gardens offering a haven of peace and tranquillity..

Epsom first played Croydon in the ESL in 2016.  They have played 9 matches, won 8 & lost 1.

 

Sutton & District Bowling Association - Arthur Hughes Triples

Epsom played away in the Arthur Hughes Triples against Malden Manor on Wednesday 23rd June 2021.  They won

25 - 7.

Arthur Hughes Triples

This is a silver plated cup first presented in 1983.  Arthur joined Cuddington B.C. in 1975.  He is thought to have worked for some years in Government Service in South Africa.  He was captain of Cuddington in 1980.  Elected President of Sutton & District Bowling Association in 1982 he sadly died in December of the same year.  The cup was presented by his widow who, it is believed moved to the Isle of Wight.

There have been no winners of this Trophy by Epsom Bowling Club.  However, the Epsom Triple of Les Crowhurst, Wally Stevens and Bernard Jenner lost in the Final in 1985.

Bill Lawrence, Bill Sandford and George Sperring reached the Semi Final in 2004 & Stefan Tomm, John Hart & John Huxford reached the same stage in 2017.

 

Chrystie League

Epsom played at home in the Chrystie League against Pippbrook on Monday 21st June 2021.  They lost on both rinks & the match 20 - 43 (0 - 4)

BE Tony Allcock Trophy

Epsom played at home against Reigate Priory on Sunday 20th June 2021 & won on 1 rink, lost on 1 rink & won overall 36 - 15.

Epsom first entered this Trophy in 2011.  Apart from 2020 Epsom have entered this Competition each year. This is a mixed Two Fours Competition.  Epsom have reached the 3rd round on 3 occasions - 2015, 2017 & 2019.

Details:

Epsom won 13 of the 15 ends winning by 23 shots.

Rink 3  Sandy Cooper Stefan Tomm Ted Ray Mary Green  lost 11 - 13

Epsom were 6 - 8 down after 10 ends & lost by 2 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 36  Reigate Priory 15.

The following members played their first match in this Competition for Epsom Bowling Club:-

East Surrey League - Men

Epsom Men played away against Cheam Fields on Saturday 19th June 2021 & won on all 3 rinks & the match 66 - 55 (10 - 0).  After 10 ends across the 3 rinks Epsom led 39 - 21, but Cheam Fields narrowed the gap to just 4 shots after 15 ends.  Epsom went on to win by 11 shots.

Details:

After 9 ends the scores were level 9 - 9, but Epsom were behind 13 - 16 on the 15th end.  The scores were level once again after 19 ends, but Epsom scored 3 shots over the last 2 ends to win by 2 shots.

Rink 3  Stefan Tomm John Hart Andrew Turnbull Les Owen  won 23 - 16

After 12 ends Epsom led 19 - 7, but lost the next 4 ends, but still led by 4 shots.  Epsom went on to win by 7 shots.

Rink 6  Derek Martin David Bragg Keith Roberts Terry Berry  won 21 - 20

Epsom led 9 - 0 after 5 ends, but Cheam Fields fought back well to take the lead 11 - 10 on the 12th end. Epsom led once again 15 - 14 on the 15th end, but going into the last end found themselves 2 shots down. Facing a rink defeat Terry played an excellent bowl to pick up 3 shots to win by 1 shot.

Final Score:  Epsom 66  Cheam Fields 55   Epsom 10 points  Cheam Fields 0 points

 

Did you know

Epsom first played Cheam Fields in the East Surrey League in 1989 (the League started in 1987). Since then Epsom have played Cheam Fields in  32 times, won 21, lost 10 & drawn 1.

The best win came in 2010 when Epsom won 127 – 52.

Bob Blaker played in his 100th East Surrey League match today.

 

Men's Friendly v Wallington

Epsom Men played away  against Wallington on Thursday 17th June 2021.  They won on 2 rinks, lost on 1 rink & won overall 60 - 37.  This is a relatively new fixture.  Epsom have played Wallington 4 times & won all 4 matches.

Details:

Rink 3  Ted Ray Frank Thompson Fred Read  won 29 - 5

Epsom dominated this rink winning 14 of the 18 ends. They led 21 - 1 after 10 ends & went on to win by 24 shots.

Rink 4  Hayden Thornton David Bragg Terry Hoye  won 21 - 11

Epsom led 8 - 6 after 7 ends & then won the next 5 ends to go further ahead 19 - 6.  They won by 10 shots.

Rink 5  Wayne Thornton Mick Cooper John Hart  lost 10 - 21

After 10 ends Epsom were 4 - 13 down & lost by 11 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 60  Wallington 37

 

Ladies Friendly v Purley

Epsom Ladies played away  against Purley on Tuesday 15th June 2021.  They won on one rink, lost on one rink & won overall 34 - 24.  15 ends were played.

Rink 1  Liz Hind Sue Needham Sandy Cooper Sandie Harvey  lost 13 - 14

Epsom were 5 - 7 down after 8 ends, but won the next 4 ends to go ahead 12 - 7.  They dropped 6 shots on end 14 & lost by just 1 shot.

Rink 2  Audrey Jones Penny Payne Sue Skinner Ruth Baker  won 21 - 10

Epsom raced into a 17 - 0 lead after 8 ends & went on to win by 11 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 34  Purley 24.

Epsom played away in the Chrystie League against Leatherhead on Monday 14th June 2021.  They won on one rink, lost on one rink & lost overall 28 - 34.

After 9 ends Epsom trailed 3 - 8, but went ahead 10 - 8 on the 12th end.  Going into the last end the scores were level, but Epsom scored 1 shot to win by 1 shot.

Rink 2  Mick Cooper Richard Price John Hart Fred Read  lost 15 - 22

The scores were level 9 - 9 after 9 ends, but Epsom were behind 12 - 21 on the 15th end.  They lost by 7 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 28  Leatherhead 34   Epsom 1 point  Leatherhead 3 points.

Terry Hoye played in his first Chrystie League match.

Did you know

Epsom joined the League in 2001. Of our current members John Hart, Fred Read & Peter Humphreys (now Social Member) played in in 2001.

Since then Epsom have played 182 matches, won 105, lost 72 & drawn 5. 10 games have been cancelled.

Epsom won the League in 2004, 2017 & 2018.  In 2004 they won all their matches winning on 15 rinks & losing on just 5.  Since 2001 65 members of the Club have played in at least 1 Chrystie League match.

Facts re Leatherhead:

Played 37, won 19, lost 18.

 

East Surrey Ladies League v Horley - postponed

Epsom Ladies first played Horley in 2006.  Since then they have played each other 14 times with Epsom winning 10 & losing 4.  The best win came in 2017 when the Ladies won 64 - 20.

 

East Surrey League - Men

Epsom Men played away against Cheam on Saturday 12th June 2021 & won on 1 rink, drew on 1 rink & lost the third.  They won 66 - 50 (7 - 3).

Epsom first played Cheam in 2016.  Since then the Clubs have played each other 7 times.  Epsom have won 5 & lost 2.

The best win came in 2016 when Epsom won 90 - 71.

Details:

Epsom dominated this rink all afternoon.  They led 19 - 6 after 10 ends, 32 - 6 after 15 ends & won by 21 shots.

Rink 3  Dave Pearce Bob Blaker John Warren Jim Scott  lost 15 - 20

Epsom were 5 - 12 down after 10 ends & 4 shots behind, 12 - 16 on the 15th end.  They lost but 5 shots.

Rink 4  Derek Martin Ted Ray Peter Miller Terry Berry  drew 17 - 17

This was a hard fought game with the scores level 10 - 10 after 11 ends.  The scores were still level 15 - 15 on the 18th end but going into the last end Epsom held a 2 shot lead.  Cheam managed 2 shots to secure a draw.

Final Result:  Epsom 66  Cheam 50   Epsom 7 points  Cheam 3 points

 

Ladies' Friendly v Carshalton

The Ladies travelled to Carshalton on Thursday 10th June 2021 for a Friendly Triples match.  They lost on both rinks & the match 22 - 40.  15 ends were played.

Epsom Ladies first played Carshalton in 2007 (no result recorded). Since 2007 13 matches have been scheduled & Epsom have won 4, lost 2, 1 no result recorded & 6 cancelled (these cancellation were matches scheduled in late September & were cancelled because of bad weather).  The best win came in 2012 when the Ladies won 69 - 33.

After 8 ends Epsom were 2 - 16 down & lost by 12 shots.

Rink 5  Penny Payne Sandy Cooper Mary Green  lost 14 - 19

After 11 ends Epsom were only 1 shot down, 12 - 13, but lost by 5 shots.

Final Score: Epsom 22  Carshalton 40.

 

Cropley Cup Men v Ladies

History

Mr Charles Cropley (captain in 191 - 1922), with the aid of his brothers, at net cost, demolished the Depot Road pavilion and, stick by stick transported and re-erected it at the new Worple Road site in 1921. Brigadier-General Wrigley provided new mats, jacks, markers and other equipment.

The actual cup was presented by Robert Tyler in 1915 and was known as The Epsom Bowling Club Challenge Cup.  It is silver, hall marked Birmingham 1913. It was won outright by Chas Cropley in 1921 (it is not known what type of competition this was). When the Ladies joined Epsom Bowling Club in 1947 the Cup became known as the Cropley Cup & a Fours Competition between the Men & Ladies took place.

There are no records of results from this time until 2008.

 

The Annual match Men v Ladies took place on Wednesday 9th June 2021.  This was a Triples match.

The The Men won on all 3 rinks & the match 69 - 34.

Details:

The Men were 4 - 12 down after 9 ends, but drew level 16 - 16 on the 15th end.  They won by 2 shots.

Rink 4  Derek Martin Stefan Tomm Ted Ray v Penny Payne Liz Hind Ruth Baker  24 - 10

The Men also trailed after 9 ends on this rink finding themselves 6 - 8 down.  They played well for the rest of the game and won by 14 shots.

Rink 5  David Fearn Mick Cooper Les Owen v Sandy Cooper Sue Skinner Frances Suttonwood  won 26 - 7

The Men led all afternoon on this rink.  They were 12 - 4 ahead after 9 ends & went on to win by 19 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom Men 69  Epsom Ladies 34

 

The first recorded Men v Ladies match in 2008 was won by the Ladies who won 68 - 45. The Ladies also won 58 - 57 in 2011.  No games took place in 2016, 2019 & 2020.

Traditionally the Men & Ladies look after the match in alternate years.  In 2021 it was a Men's task to organise

tea/coffee and cakes after the game.

 

Mixed Friendly

Epsom played at home against Malden Manor on Tuesday 8th June 2021.  This was a Triples match. Epsom first played Malden Manor in a mixed match in 2013.  Including today they have won 7 games & lost 1. The best win came in 2021 when Epsom won 75 - 33 (+42). Today they won on all three rinks & 75 - 33.

Details:

Rink 4  Audrey Jones Liz Hind David Bragg  won 18 - 9

After 9 ends Epsom led 12 - 3 & still had a 12 shot lead after 15 ends.  They won by 9 shots.

Rink 5  Ruth Baker Mick Cooper Frank Thompson  won 26 - 11

After 12 ends Epsom led 19 - 5 & went on to win by 15 shots.

Rink 6  Janet Newman Brian Kenyon/Sue Skinner Fred Read won 31 - 13

Epsom won 12 of the 18 ends.  They led 14 - 7 after 9 ends, 27 - 9 after 15 ends 7 won by 18 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 75  Malden Manor 33

 

Chrystie League

Epsom played their first game in the Chrystie League at home against Bookham on Monday 7th June 2021.

Epsom first played Bookham in 2001.  Since then (including this game) they have met 39 times.  Epsom have won 22, lost 15, drawn 1 & 1 game was cancelled.

Tonight they won on 1 rink, lost on 1 rink & lost overall 33 - 34 (1 - 3)

Details:

Rink 2  Mick Cooper David Fearn  Frank Thompson Fred Read  lost 15 - 20

After 9 ends Epsom were 2 - 17 down.  However, they recovered well winning 6 of the remaining ends to lose by 5 shots.

Rink 3  Brian Kenyon Richard Price Stefan Tomm John Hart  won 18 - 14

After 9 ends the scores were level 7 - 7.  Epsom led 16 - 9 after 15 ends & dropped 4 shots on the last end & won by 4 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 33 Bookham 34   Epsom 1 points  Bookham 3 points.

David Fearn & Stefan Tomm played in their first Chrystie League game.

 

Mixed Friendly v Popes Mead

Epsom travelled to Popes Mead on Sunday 6th June 2021 to play in a Mixed Friendly match.  Epsom first played Popes Mead in 2012.  Since then there have been 6 matches with Epsom winning 4 of these.  The early games (2012 - 2015) were 6 rinks, but the game today was 4 Triples.

They won on 1 rink, lost on 3 rinks & lost overall 54 - 84.

Details:

Rink 2  Sylvia Smart David Fearn John Warren  lost 15 - 16

Epsom were 4 - 10 down after 9 ends.  They won 4 of the last 5 ends & lost by just 1 shot.

Rink 3  Derek Martin Sandy Cooper Ted Ray  won 20 - 14

Epsom were 9 - 12 down after 9 ends, but won the last 6 ends to win by 6 shots.

Rink 4  Liz Hind Brian Kenyon Mick Cooper  lost 9 - 24

After 9 ends Epsom trailed 5 - 12.  They lost the last 6 ends to lose by 15 shots.

Rink 5  Sue Skinner Richard Price Frank Thompson  lost 10 - 30

Epsom struggled on this rink & lost by 20 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 54  Popes Mead 84

David Fearn played his first Mixed match for Epsom in this game.

 

East Surrey League - Ladies

Epsom Ladies played away at Cheam Fields on Saturday 5th June 2021 and lost on both rinks, & lost overall 25 - 51 (0 - 4).

East Surrey League - Men

Epsom Men played away at Wallington on Saturday 5th June 2021 and won on 1 rink, lost on 2 rinks & won overall 53 - 51 (6 - 4). This match was won by Epsom over the last 3 ends across the 3 rinks.  Epsom trailed 38 - 54 after 15 ends & 46 -48 after 18 ends, but outscored Wallington 7 - 3 over the last 3 ends to win by 2 shots.

Details:

Rink 1  David Bragg Keith Roberts Andrew Turnbull Les Owen  lost 17 - 18

As the final score suggests this was a close game.  The scores were level 10 - 10 after 11 ends & 13 - 13 after 15 ends. Going into the last end Epsom needed 2 shots to draw, but only managed 1 shot.

Rink 2  Derek Martin Ted Ray Terry Hoye Terry Berry  lost 16 - 20

This was certainly a game of two halves.  After 9 ends Epsom trailed 1 - 15, but won 9 of the remaining ends to lose by 4 shots.

Rink 3  Bob Blaker John Hart John Warren Jim Scott  won 20 - 13

Epsom led 12 - 5 after 10 ends & 18 - 12 after 18 ends.  They won by 7 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 53  Wallington 51   Epsom 6 points  Wallington 4 points.

 

Vilamoura Mixed Triples League

This League has one triple playing at home & one triple playing away. 2 points are awarded for a rink win, 1 for a draw & 2 points for an overall win (6 points in total). Epsom joined the Vilamoura League in 2017 and went on to win the title.  They repeated this performance in 2018. In the 3 years of competition Epsom have played 29 games, won 21, drawn 1 & lost 7 - quite an impressive record.

The game scheduled for 4th June was called off because of poor weather.
