Men's ESL League

Epsom Men played at home against Old Coulsdon on Saturday 30th June 2018.  They won on 3 rinks, drew on the fourth & won overall 93 - 61 (11 - 1). This was the best points win against Old Coulsdon since the League began in 1987.

Details:

Rink 3  Howard Ellis Bob Blaker Terry Berry John Warren  won 21 - 16

After 10 ends Epsom was 8 - 10 behind, but took the lead 14 - 13 on the 15th end.  They went behind again, 14 - 15 on the 17th end, but finished strongly to win by 5 shots.

Rink 4  Phil Sims  John Hart  Geoff Purrott  Martin Harbottle  won 27 - 16

Epsom found themselves 8 - 14 down after 12 ends, but outscored Old Coulsdon 19 shots to 2 over the rest of the game.  They won by 11 shots.

Rink 5 Dave Pearce Andrew Turnbull  Simon Meller John Meningen  drew 19 - 19

Epsom led 13 - 6 after 10 ends & 17 - 11 after 15 ends.  Old Coulsdon came back strongly over the last 6 ends to snatch a draw.

Rink 6  Stefan Tomm Keith Roberts John Huxford Peter Miller    won 26 - 10

After 5 ends the scores were level 6 - 6, Epsom then took full control of the game.  They led 12 - 6 on the 10th end,  17 - 10 on the 15th end & finished strongly to win by 16 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 93  Old Coulsdon 61    Epsom 11 points  Old Coulsdon 1 point

 

Ladies' Friendly

Epsom Ladies travelled to Leatherhead on Tuesday 26th June 2018 and lost on both rinks & the match 14 - 46.

Details:

Rink 2  Audrey Jones  Frances Suttonwood  Anne Hoffmann  Sylvia Smart  lost 9 - 24

Epsom led 5 - 4 after 5 ends, but soon lost control and went behind 6 - 13 after 10 ends.  The game finished after 15 ends with Epsom losing by 15 shots.

Rink 3  Dawn Chappell  Sandie Harvey  Heather Pigden  Sandra Huxford  lost 5 - 22

Epsom struggled from the start on this rink finding themselves 1 - 15 down after 10 ends.  They picked up 4 more shots & lost by 17 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 14  Leatherhead 46

Dawn Chappell played her very first match for Epsom Bowling Club.

 

Men's Friendly

Epsom played away against Chessington in a Friendly Triples match on Wednesday 27th June 2018 & won on 2 rinks, lost on one rink & won overall 53 - 36.  This was the 7th game in a row that Epsom Men have won retaining an unbeaten record this season.

Details:

Rink 2  Vic Phillips  Frank Thompson  Keith Roberts  lost 11 - 15

Epsom led 9 - 4 after 10 ends, but lost the lead 10 - 11 on the 15th end.  They lost by 4 shots.

Rink 3  Derek Martin  Brian Collis  David Bragg  won 22 - 7

Epsom led all afternoon on this rink.  They led 13 - 4 after 10 ends, 16 - 7 after 15 ends & won by 15 shots.

Rink 4  Bill Lawrence Stefan Tomm Phil Sims  won 20 - 14

This was a similar story to rink 3 with Epsom leading 14 - 6 after 10 ends, 20 - 7 after 15 ends & won by 6 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 53  Chessington 36

 

Chrystie League

Epsom travelled to Leatherhead on Monday 25th June 2018 and won on 1 rink, lost on the second & won overall 44 - 26 (3 - 1).  This is 4 wins out of 4 for Epsom.

Details:

Rink 5  Derek Martin  Stefan Lukatschat  Geoff Purrott  John Hart  won 30 - 6

The scores were level 5 - 5 after 7 ends, but Epsom then scored on every end except 1 for the rest of the game.  They won by 24 shots.

Rink 6  Bill Lawrence  David Bragg  Phil Sims  Bob Blaker  lost 14 - 20

Epsom made a poor start on this rink finding themselves 0 - 10 down after 7 ends.  They were still well down, 5 - 16 on the 12th end, but had a better finish to the game.  They lost by 6 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 44  Leatherhead 26    Epsom 3 points  Leatherhead 1 point

 

Area 3 Top 4  Epsom 'A'

Epsom 'A played at home against Old Coulsdon on Monday 25th June 2018 and won 19 - 7. (Old Coulsdon conceded after 14 ends).

Details:

Of the 14 ends played Old Coulsdon only won 4.  Epsom led 12 - 3 after 8 ends and with the score 19 - 7

Old Coulsdon conceded after just 14 ends.

Men's ESL League

Epsom Men travelled to Croydon to play against Croydon on Saturday 23rd June 2018.  They won on 2 rinks, drew on 1 rink & lost the fourth.  They won 99 - 80 (9 - 3).  This gives Epsom 7 wins out of 7 - the second best start in the ESL (Epsom won the first 9 matches in 2015).

Details:

Rink 2  Howard Ellis Bob Blaker Terry Berry John Warren  won 27 - 14

This was an excellent performance on this rink by all 4 players.  They were 14 - 11 ahead after 12 ends, but then won the next 4 ends scoring a total of 9 shots to go further ahead 23 - 11.  Epsom went on to win by 13 shots.

Rink 3  John Hart  Pat Buckley  Martin Harbottle Peter Miller  drew 29 - 29

This was a high scoring game on this rink.  Epsom had a good lead, 22 - 11 on the 10th end, but Croydon came back into the game strongly to be just 1 shot adrift on the 13th end.  Epsom led 27 - 24 on the 18th end, but only led by 1 shot going into the last end.  Facing 4 shots down Peter picked up the jack to hold 1, but the Croydon skip managed to get the shot with his last bowl.  The rink ended all square.

Rink 4  Stefan Tomm Geoff Purrott John Huxford Graham Naish  lost 13 - 24

The scores were level, 8 - on the 9th end, but Epsom soon went behind 8 - 11 on the 12th end.  Epsom were outplayed over the last 9 ends being outscored 13 - 5 to lose by 11 shots.

Rink 5  Dave Pearce Keith Roberts Simon Meller John Meningen   won 30 - 13

Epsom won 14 of the 21 ends played on this rink.  They had a commanding lead 15 - 3 after 10 ends & 26 - 3 on the 15th end.  They went on to win by 17 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 99  Croydon 80   Epsom 9 points  Croydon 3 points

Four records from matches played against Croydon were broken in this match. Overall win - +19 shots, most shots in a match - 179, highest rink win +17 & best winning sequence of matches v Croydon - 3 (2016 - 2018)

 

Past Times

Epsom 'B' played Merton Park on Friday 22nd June 2018 & won away, lost at home & lost overall 38 - 45.

Details:

Home: Howard Ellis  Stefan Lukatschat  Bob Blaker  Graham Naish  lost 17 - 25

This was a very poor performance by Epsom.  They were 0 - 10 down after just 5 ends & 8 - 16 behind after 15 ends.  Going into the last end they were losing 11 - 25, but managed to pick up 6 shots to make the score a little more respectable.  They lost by 8 shots.

Away:    Derek Martin  Stefan Tomm  John Hart  Terry Berry  won 21 - 20

Epsom performed rather better away & led 12 - 9 after 12 ends.  They lost the lead, 13 - 14 on end 16, but soon regained the lead on the 18th end (20 - 14).  They dropped 5 shots on the last end to win narrowly by 1 shot.

Final Score:  Epsom 38  Merton Park 45

Stefan Lukatschat & Derek Martin played in their first game in this Competition.

 

Past Times

Epsom 'A' played Southey on Thursday 21st June 2018 & won 45 - 40.

Home: Simon Meller Geoff Purrott  John Huxford  Peter Miller  won 33 - 10

Epsom dominated this game all evening.  They led 18 - 6 after 10 ends & 24 - 8 after 15 ends.  Going into the last end Epsom knew they were leading overall by 2 shots (the game at Southey had finished), but when Peter went down to play his first bowl he was 4 shots down.  He played a running bowl, had a fortunate rub of the green to take the jack back.  The Southey skip with his last bowl hit the Epsom shot bowl but ran a long way through.  Epsom gained 3 shots to win by 23 shots.

Away:  Dave Pearce  David Bragg Andrew Turnbull  Martin Harbottle   lost 12 - 30

Epsom struggled away at Southey finding themselves 5 - 23 down after 13 ends. They were still well down, 9 - 27 on the 18th end and going into the last ends 9 - 30 down  They scored 3 shots on the last end to lose by 18 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 45  Southey 40

Simon Meller played his first game in this Competition.

 

Arthur Hughes Triples

Epsom played at home against Chipstead on Thursday 21st June 2018 & won 23 - 12. 

Details:

Rink 5  Bob Blaker  Keith Roberts  John Warren  won 23 - 12

Epsom was always in control in this game.  They led 10 - 6 after 8 ends, and 13 - 12 after 12 ends.  Epsom won all the remaining ends to win by 11 shots.

 

Area 3 Top 4 - Epsom 'B'

Epsom 'B' played at home against Epsom Park 'A' on Wednesday 20th June 2018 & won 20 - 13. 

Details:

The scores were level 8 - 8 after 10 ends, but Epsom went into a 16 - 9 lead after 15 ends.  They went on to win by 7 shots.

 

Chrystie League

Epsom played away against Bookham on Monday 18th June 2018 &  won on 1 rink, lost on 1 rink & won overall 31 - 28 (3 - 1).

Details:

Rink 3  Derek Martin  Ken Lacey  Geoff Purrott  John Hart  won 16 - 11

Epsom was ahead all evening on this rink.  They led 8 - 5 after 9 ends, 15 - 8 after 14 ends & won by 5 shots.

Rink 4  Bob Lister  David Ganney  Andrew Turnbull  Bob Blaker  lost 15 - 17

Quite the opposite on this rink from rink 3 with Epsom trailing 5 - 11 after 9 ends & 10 - 14 behind on the 14th end.  They lost by 2 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 31  Bookham 28    Epsom 3 points  Bookham 1 point

 

Men's ESL Top Club

Epsom Men travelled to Dorking on Sunday 17th June 2018 to play in the ESL Top Club.  They won 4 - 1 - winning the Two Wood Singles, 4 Wood Singles, Pairs & Fours.  They lost the Triples.  This Competition was originally the Top 10, but was changed this season to Top 11.  Before the match all the Epsom bowlers were in shock as they caught Dave Pearce drinking tea!!!!!!

Details:

Rink 2  Two Wood Singles: Bob Blaker  won 15 - 13

Bob will be labelled the 'come back kid' from now on as this was the second time he came back from being well down in a Two Wood Singles game.  After 10 ends Bob was 6 - 7 down, but then dropped 6 shots over the next 4 ends to go further behind 6 - 13. However, Bob won all the remaining ends and won by two shots.

Rink 3  Singles: Dave Pearce  won 21 - 7

This was a very comfortable win for Dave with his opponent struggling to find line & length all morning.

He led 9 - 0 after 6 ends, 16 - 6 after 12 ends and went on to win by 14 shots on the 16th end.

Rink 5  Pairs: Andrew Turnbull  Graham Naish  won 21 - 11

This turned out to be a challenging experience for all 4 players on this rink.  Epsom led 10 - 6 after 10 ends & 18 - 8 after 15 ends.  They won by 10 shots.

Rink 4  Triples: Howard Ellis John Meningen Terry Berry  lost 12 - 20

This was also a challenge on this rink particularly for the Epsom 3.  They were 5 - 9 down after 10 ends, 8 - 16 adrift after 15 ends finally losing by 8 shots.

Rink 1  Fours: Keith Roberts  Martin Harbottle Peter Miller  John Warren  won 21 - 10

Epsom restricted Dorking to winning just 6 of the 19 ends played on this rink.  Epsom led 10 - 4 after 10 ends & 15 - 9 after 15 ends.  With the game won overall Dorking conceded on the 19th end leaving Epsom winners by 11 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 4  Dorking 1

 

Men's ESL League

Epsom Men played against Horley on Saturday 16th June 2018.  They won on all 4 rinks & the match 91 - 63 (12 - 0). The 12 - 0 was only achieved on the very last end on a measure on rink 4 & rink 2 scoring 6 shots also on the last end..  This was the 6th win in a row against Horley.

Details:

Rink 2  Brian Kenyon Bob Blaker Keith Roberts  Martin Harbottle  won 22 - 18

This rink was 11 - 9 ahead after 10 ends, but behind 13 - 14 on the 15th end.  They went 13 - 16 down on the 17th end, and going into the last end they were losing 16 - 18.  They scored a count of 6 to win the rink by 4 shots.

Rink 3  Howard Ellis Andrew Turnbull Terry Berry John Warren  won 25 - 22

Epsom led 15 - 10 after 10 ends & 19 - 15 after 15 ends.  On the last end Epsom dropped 4 shots, but still won by 3 shots.

Rink 4  Phil Sims Geoff Purrott John Huxford Graham Naish  17 - 16

Epsom led 12 - 6 after 10 ends & 15 - 8 after 15 ends.  Horley then won the next 4 ends to go ahead 15 - 16 on the 20th end.  The last end proved to be very tense with Epsom holding 1 shot, but there was a measure for the second.  An umpire was called & decided it was an Epsom second shot.  Epsom winning by just the 1 shot.

Rink 5  Dave Pearce Graham Coleman  Simon Meller John Meningen   won 27 - 7. 

This was an excellent win for Epsom restricting Horley to winning just 6 ends.  They led 13 - 4 after 10 ends, 19 - 6 after 15 ends & went on to win by 20 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 91  Horley 63   Epsom 12 points  Horley 0 points

 

Men's Friendly

Epsom played away against Wallington in a Friendly Triples match on Thursday 14th June 2018 & won on 2 rinks, lost on 2 rinks & won overall 67 - 63.  This was the 6th game in a row that Epsom Men have won retaining an unbeaten record this season.

After 10 ends Epsom was 7 - 12 down & further behind 10 - 19 after 15 ends.  They lost by 11 shots.

Rink 3  Stefan Tomm  David Bragg  Martin Harbottle  won 25 - 5

Epsom dominated this game all afternoon.  They allowed Wallington to score just 5 singles in the game.  Epsom led 12 - 5 after 11 ends & scored on every end from then on to win by 20 shots.

Rink 4  Brian Kenyon  Frank Thompson  Bob Blaker  lost 9 - 23

Epsom had a poor afternoon.  They were 7 - 14 behind after 10 ends & 8 - 20 in arrears after 15 ends.  They lost by 14 shots.

Rink 5  Pat Buckley  Ken Lacey  John Hart    won 21 - 12

Epsom led 12 - 8 after 10 ends & 16 - 12 after 15 ends.  They went on to win by 9 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 67  Wallington 63

Epsom played at home against Esher on Monday 11th June 2018 & won on both rinks.  They won 44 - 26 (4 - 0).

Epsom was in control all evening on this rink.  They led 15 - 5 after 9 ends, 22 - 10 after 15 ends & won by 13 shots.

Rink 2  Derek Martin  Andrew Turnbull  Howard Ellis  Bob Blaker  won 18 - 13

Epsom led 9 - 7 after 9 ends & 14 - 12 after 15 ends.  They went on to win by 5 shots.

Final Result:  Epsom 44  Esher 26    Epsom 4 points  Esher 0 points

 

Ladies' ESL League

Epsom Ladies travelled to Horley on Sunday 10th June 2018.  They won on 1 rink, lost on 1 rink & lost overall

39 - 45 (1 - 3).

Details:

Rink 3  Audrey Jones  Ruth Nixon  Ruth Baker  Sandra Huxford  won 20 - 17

After 10 ends Epsom was 8 - 9 down & further behind 8 - 12 on the 13th end.  However, they scored 9 shots in total over the next 3 ends to go ahead 17 - 12.  With 2 ends to go Epsom led 18 - 17, but scored two singles to win by 3 shots.

Rink 4  Trish Southgate Heather Pigden  Anne Hoffmann Sylvia Smart  lost 19 - 28

After 9 ends Epsom was well behind 6 - 16, but they won the next 5 ends to narrow the gap to just 1 shot

(15 - 16).  Horley had the better of the last 7 ends leaving Epsom losing by 9 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 39  Horley 45    Epsom 1 point  Horley 3 points

 

Men's ESL League

Epsom Men travelled the short distance to play against Cheam on Saturday 9th June 2018.  They won on 3 rinks, drew on the 4th & won overall 86 - 70 (11 - 1). Epsom led across the 4 rinks all afternoon, but over the last few ends they dropped several shots, but still won by 16 shots.

Details:

Rink 2  Stefan Tomm David Bragg Martin Harbottle Jim Scott  won 24 - 17

Epsom had a good lead 12 - 6 after 10 ends, but Cheam came back well to go ahead 15 - 16 on the 17th end.  However, Epsom finished strongly out scoring Cheam 9 - 1 over the last 4 ends to win by 7 shots.

Rink 3  Brian Kenyon John Hart Peter Miller Graham Naish  won 23 - 16

Epsom led 10 - 7 after 10 ends & went further ahead 18 - 9 on the 15th end. Despite dropping 5 shots on end 19 Epsom went on to win by 7 shots.

Rink 4  Howard Ellis Andrew Turnbull John Huxford John Warren   won 21 - 19

The scores were level 10 - 10 on the 8th end, but Epsom led 18 - 15 on the 15th end. Going into the last end Epsom led by 1 shot (20 - 19), but when John went to play the very last bowl he was 1 shot down.  He played an excellent bowl to displace the jack to an Epsom wing bowl to win by 2 shots.

Rink 5  Dave Pearce Simon Meller Bob Blaker John Meningen   drew 18 - 18

Epsom struggled for the first 10 ends finding themselves 5 - 11 adrift.  On the 14th end they scored a count of 6 to tie the scores 14 - 14.  On the 18th end Epsom went ahead for the first time 17 - 16 & going into the last end they held a 1 shot advantage.  The Cheam lead put his first bowl on the jack it stayed there throughout the end to leave the rink all square.

Final Score:  Epsom 86  Cheam 70  Epsom 11 points  Cheam 1 point.

 

Ladies' Friendly

The Ladies played at home against Carshalton on Thursday 7th June 2018 & won on both rinks and the match

38 - 23.

Details:

Rink 2  Audrey Jones  Ruth Nixon  Sylvia Smart  won 18 - 14

The scores were level 6 - 6 after 6 ends, but Epsom went behind 8 - 9 on the 10th end.  They came back well to go on to win by 4 shots.

Rink 3  Sandie Harvey  Ruth Baker  Heather Pigden  won 20 - 9

The scores were also level on the 6th end on this rink 4 - 4.  Epsom then took control & led 15 - 8 after 15 ends & won by 11 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 38  Carshalton 23

 

Mixed Friendly

Epsom played Malden Manor at home on Tuesday 5th June 2018 and won on 2 rinks, lost on 1 rink won overall 57 - 45.

Details:

Rink 1  Audrey Jones  Frank Thompson  Brian Kenyon  won 14 - 12

After 10 ends the scores were level 7 - 7, but Epsom then won the next 4 ends scoring a total of 7 shots to lead

14 - 7.  They won by 2 shots.

Rink 2  Sandie Harvey  Sylvia Smart  Cyril Newman  lost 19 - 24

Epsom was 9 - 12 down after 10 ends and came back to be just 1 shot behind 15 - 16 on the 14th end.  However, on the next end they dropped 7 shots from which Epsom never recovered.  They lost by 5 shots.

Rink 3  Janet Newman  Bill Lawrence  Bob Blaker  won 24 - 9

After 10 ends Epsom led 12 - 6 and further ahead 20 - 8 on the 15th end.  They won by 15 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 57  Malden Manor 45

 

Chrystie League

Epsom played Brockham away on Monday 4th June in their first Chrystie League game of the season.  They had an impressive win 39 - 19 (4 - 0).

Details:

Rink 2  Derek Martin  Ken Lacey  Howard Ellis  John Hart  won 19 - 10

Epsom led 11 - 2 after 9 ends & kept the lead throughout the evening.  They won by 9 shots.

Rink 3  Bob Lister  David Ganney  Phil Sims  Geoff Purrott won 20 - 9

Epsom led all evening on this rink.  They were 10 - 4 ahead after 9 ends, 16 - 7 ahead after 14 ends & won by 11 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 39  Brockham 19    Epsom 4 points  Brockham 0 points

 

Bowls England Top Club (Top 11)

Epsom played Croydon at home on Sunday 3rd June in the BE Top Club (Top 11). They won the Two Wood Singles & Fours, but lost the Singles, Pairs & Triples.  The outcome of this game was decided on the very last end in the singles - on a measure.

Details:

Rink 3  Two Wood: Graham Coleman  won 16 - 11

Graham started slowly & was 6 - 9 down after 11 ends.  However, he won all the remaining ends to win by 5 shots on the 19th end.

Rink 3  Singles: Dave Pearce  lost 20 - 21

This turned out to be a very close game ending with a tense & thrilling finish.  Dave was 7 - 8 down after 10 ends, but took the lead 13 - 12 on the 16th end.  He lost the lead on the 18th end, but drew level 19 - 19 on the 23rd end.  Going into what was the last end Dave led 20 - 19, but his opponent scored the two shots for victory - the second shot on a very close measure.

Rink 1  Pairs: Howard Ellis  Graham Naish  lost 22 - 25

Epsom made a disastrous start in the Pairs finding themselves 3 - 18 adrift after 10 ends.  However, they had a very much better second half winning 8 of the 11 ends, but still fell short by 3 shots.

Rink 2  Triples: Brian Kenyon Martin Harbottle Terry Berry  lost 18 - 19

After 10 ends Epsom was 7 - 9 down, and further behind 8 - 19 on the 15th end.  They then scored 5 shots followed by 4 shots to narrow the gap to 2 shots.  On the last end Epsom held 2 shots (& possibly 3 shots), but the Croydon skip with the last bowl pushed one of their bowls into the head to get second wood.

Rink 4  Fours: Andrew Turnbull  John Huxford John Warren  Peter Miller  won 19 - 10

Epsom was behind 6 - 7 on the 10th end, but went ahead 13 - 8 on the 15th end.  They went on to win by 9 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 2  Croydon 3

Graham Coleman played in his first game in this Competition.

Ladies' ESL League

Epsom Ladies played their very first League match of the season on Saturday 2nd June 2018 away at Cheam Fields. They won on 1 rink, lost on 1 rink & lost overall 33 - 40 (1 - 3).

Details:

Rink 2  Lesley South  Gill Sperring  Ruth Baker  Anne Hoffmann  lost 13 - 22

After 12 ends Epsom was just 1 shot behind, 10 - 11, but then lost the next 5 ends dropping a total of 10 shots to go behind 10 - 21.  They won 3 of the last 4 ends, but lost by 9 shots.

Rink 5  Audrey Jones  Trish Southgate  Sylvia Smart  Sandra Huxford  won 20 - 18

Epsom was 8 - 13 down after 10 ends & still behind 13 - 16 on the 15th end.  They went ahead on the 20th end 19 - 18 & scored 1 more shot to win by 2 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 33  Cheam Fields 40  Epsom 1 point  Cheam Fields 3 points

Lesley South played her very first League match for Epsom Bowling Club.

 

Men's ESL League

Epsom Men played away at Wallington in their fourth ESL League match on Saturday 2nd June 2018. They won on 3 rinks, lost on 1 rink & won overall 83 - 65 (10 - 2).

Details:

Rink 2  Dave Pearce Bob Blaker John Meningen Terry Berry  lost 9 - 27

Epsom struggled on this rink all afternoon.  However, it must be said that all the 'rubs of the green' went Wallington's way.  They were 7 - 20 down after 15 ends finally losing by 18 shots.

The scores were level 10 - 10 after 10 ends, but Epsom had the better of the rest of the game.  They led

25 - 14 after 18 ends & won by 6 shots.

Rink 4  Brian Kenyon Simon Meller John Huxford Peter Miller  won 21 - 11

Epsom led all afternoon on this rink.  They were 17 - 9 ahead at 15 ends and went on to win by 10 shots.

Rink 5  Phil Sims  David Bragg  John Warren Jim Scott  won 28 - 8

For the third time this season Jim gets the highest winning rink.  This was another excellent performance by his rink with Epsom dominating the game throughout.  They led 15 - 3 after 10 ends, 24 - 7 after 18 ends & won by 20 shots.
