Windeler Cup

The Annual Windeler Cup was played on Monday 30th May 2016.  Twenty one members turned up a chilly afternoon to take part.  The event was organised by Anne Hoffmann & Bob Blaker.  Members played 3 lots of 5 ends and the 2 teams with the highest shot difference competed for the cup.

Sue Needham, Frank Thompson, Derek Hoffmann & George Sperring played against Bill Lawrence, Dolly Snow & John Warren in the Final.

George's team won 5 - 1 over 5 ends.

Sue Needham, Frank Thompson & Derek Hoffmann win this Trophy for the first time.

Many thanks goes to Anne & Bob and all the helpers who made the afternoon successful.

Men's Friendly v Redhill

Epsom Men played at home against Redhill in a Triples match on Sunday 29th May 2016 and won on 2 rinks, lost on 1 rink & won overall 62 - 40.

Details:

Rink 2  Frank Thompson  Derek Martin  Phil Sims  won 24 - 15

This rink started slowly (4 - 5 after 5 ends), but then went ahead 13 - 6 after 10 ends.  They maintained this momentum going on to win by 9 shots.

Rink 3  Vic Phillips  David Ganney  John Hart  won 24 - 10

This rink was in command all afternoon.  They led 10 - 1 after just 5 ends & went further ahead 20 - 3 after 15 ends.  They won convincingly by 14 shots.

Rink 4  Geoff Benfield  Derek Hoffmann  Ron Snow  lost 14 - 15

This rink alsao got off to a slow start finding themselves 1 - 6 down after 5 ends.  They levelled the scores 8 - 8 after 10 end & then went ahead 14 - 12 after 15 ends.  They were all square again going into the final end but Epsom dropped 1 shot to lose by 1.

Final Score:  Epsom 62  Redhill 40

 

Bowls England Top Club

Epsom Men played at home against Purley Bury in the Bowls England Top Club on Sunday 29th May 2016 and won both singles & the Fours, lost the Pairs & Triples but won overall 3 - 2.

Details:

Singles:  Terry Berry  won 23 - 16

After 8 ends the scores were level 5 - 5, but Terry then went behind 6 - 9 four ends later. After 17 ends he was still trailing by 4 shots, but then won the next 5 ends scoring a total of  10 shots to lead 18 - 12.  Terry went on to win by 7 shots.

Two Wood:  Stefan Tomm   won 15 - 11

After trailing 2 - 3 after 4 ends Stefan went into the lead and led 10 - 5 after 10 ends & 12 - 9 after 15 ends.  He completed the win on the 20th end.

Pairs:  Brian Kenyon  Jim Scott    lost 17 - 19

After 11 ends Epsom was 4 - 15 behind, but closed the gap to just 5 shots (10 - 15) after 14 ends. The Epsom pair outscored Purley Bury 7 - 2 over the last 6 ends & fell just 2 shots short for a draw.

Triples:  Howard Ellis  Martin Harbottle  Les Owen   lost 11 - 19

After 10 ends Epsom was behind 6 - 13 and were well beaten by 8 shots by a very good Purley Bury Triple.

Fours: Andrew Turnbull  Bob Blaker  John Meningen  Graham Naish   won 29 - 8

This was an excellent performance by the Epsom rink.  They led 11 - 6 after 10 ends and totally outplayed their opposition for the rest of the game outscoring Purley Bury 18 - 2 to win by 21 shots.  The last 2 ends were not played.

Final Score:  Epsom 3  Purley Bury 2

Bob Blaker & John Meningen played in their first game in this competition.

 

Men's League Match v Chipstead

Epsom Men played at home v Chipstead on Saturday 28th May 2016. Epsom won on three rinks, lost on one rink and won overall 83 - 70 (10 - 2).  This turned out to be a very close match right up to the last few ends.  Over the last 5 ends across the 4 rinks Epsom scored 32 shots to 14 by Chipstead.

Details:

Rink 1  Keith Roberts  Andrew Turnbull  Geoff Purrott  John Huxford  won 19 - 14

The scores were level, 8 - 8 after 10 ends, Epsom took a 2 shot lead after 15 ends (13 - 11).  They continued to stay ahead and won by 5 shots.

Rink 2  Stefan Tomm  John Hart  John Meningen  Jim Scott  lost 19 - 22

Epsom had an excellent start on this rink going ahead 14 - 7 after 10 ends.  Chipstead had 5 good ends in the second half and went ahead 19 - 16 after 18 ends.  Epsom fought back well to level the scores 19 - 19 after 20 ends and held 2 shots on the final end until the Chipstead number 3 put the jack in the ditch.  Epsom lost by 3 shots.

Rink 3  Brian Kenyon  George Sperring  John Warren  Les Owen  won 21 - 12

Epsom led all afternoon on this rink. They led 8 - 5 after 10 ends, 12 - 9 after 15 ends and went on to win by 9 shots.

Rink 4  Howard Ellis  Bob Blaker  Terry Berry  Graham Naish  won 24 - 22

This was quite a remarkable game.  After 7 ends the scores were level, 7 - 7.  However, Epsom then lost the next 5 ends to go behind 7 - 15.  They were still in trouble after 16 ends finding themselves 9 - 22 behind, but amazingly they won the last 5 remaining ends picking up a total of 15 shots to snatch a dramatic win by 2 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 83  Chipstead 70   Epsom 10 points  Chipstead 2 points.

This was Geoff Purrott's 150th appearance in the East Surrey League.

 

Men's Friendly v Purley

Epsom Men travelled to Purley on Thursday 26th May 2016 to play a Friendly Triples Match.  They won on 3 rinks, lost on 1 rink, & won overall 83 - 55.

Details:

Rink 3  Bill Lawrence  Geoff Purrott  Peter Miller  won 28 - 11

After 7 ends Epsom was behind 5 - 7.  However, they won the next 5 ends scoring a total of 13 shots to go ahead 18 - 7.  Purley only scored on 2 more ends leaving Epsom winners by 17 shots.

Rink 4  Phil Sims  Andrew Turnbull  John Meningen  won 23 - 12

Epsom got off to a good start on this rink and led 13 - 6 after 10 ends.  After 14 ends they led 15 - 9 and immediately picked up two 4's on the next 2 ends.  They won by 11 shots.

Rink 5  Bob Blaker  John Hart  Les Owen  won 17 - 16

Epsom struggled on this rink throughout the first part of this game.  They were 5 - 14 down after 11 ends, but won all the remaining ends bar the 17th end and picked up 5 shots on the last end to snatch a 1 shot win.

Rink 6  Brian Kenyon  David Ganney  John Warren  lost 15 - 16

This was a very close game as the final score suggests.  After 9 ends the scores were level 8 - 8 and also level 12 - 12 after 13 ends. Going into the last end Epsom was 13 - 16 down & with 1 bowl to play by the opposition skip Epsom was holding 6 shots.  The skip managed to get 3rd bowl leaving Epsom losing by just 1 shot.

Final Score:  Epsom 83   Purley 55

 

Arthur Hughes Triples

Epsom played away at Epsom Park in the Sutton & District Arthur Hughes Triples on Thursday 26th May 2016.

Phil Sims, John Hart & John Meningen represented Epsom and found themselves 3 - 14 adrift after 9 ends.  They closed the gap to 10 - 14 after 12 ends, but immediately dropped 4 shots to go further behind.  They eventually lost 14 - 21.

 

Mixed Match v Epsom Park

Epsom played at home in the second mixed match of the season against Epsom Park on Wednesday 25th May 2016. Epsom won on 3 rinks, lost on 1 rink but won overall 77 - 55.

Details:

Rink 1  Vic Phillips  David Ganney  Phil Sims  Eileen Mills  won 18 - 14

After 10 ends the scores were level 7 - 7, but Epsom went ahead 15 - 10 after 15 ends.  They went on to win by 4 shots.

Rink 2  Arthur Upward  Mike James  Derek Martin  Roy Ward  lost 11 - 18

After 10 ends this rink was 5 - 8 down and still 3 shots adrift, 8 - 11 after 15 ends.  Epsom Park finished strongly winning the last 4 ends leaving Epsom losing by 7 shots.

Rink 3  Bill Lawrence  Sylvia Smart  Howard Ellis  Stefan Tomm  won 24 - 15

This rink was also level after 10 ends - 9 - 9.  Epsom had the better of the rest of the game going on to win by 9 shots.

Rink 4  Keith Roberts  Geoff Benfield  Frank Thompson  Bob Blaker  won 24 - 8

This rink got off to an excellent start and led 12 - 2 after 10 ends.  They continued to dominate the game going on to win by 16 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 77  Epsom Park 55

 

Ladies' Friendly v Banstead Neville

Epsom Ladies travelled to Banstead Neville on Tuesday 24th May 2016 to play a Friendly Triples Match. They lost on 2 rinks, won one rink, and won overall 46 - 40.

Details:

Rink 2  Guest  Frances Suttonwood  Anne Hoffmann  lost 9 - 16

After 10 ends the scores were level 7 - 7, but Banstead Neville had the better of the rest of the game going on to win by 7 shots.

Rink 3  Sandra Huxford  Dolly Snow  Sylvia Smart  won 23 - 6

After 10 ends Epsom had a good lead, 12 - 3 & continued to outplay their opponents.  They won by 17 shots.

Rink 4  Sue Needham  Pat Walmsley  Ruth Nixon  lost 14 - 18

This was a similar story to rink 2.  The scores were level 10 - 10 after 11 ends, but Epsom only scored on 2 more ends finally losing by 4 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 46  Banstead Neville 40

 

Bowls England Over 60's Tony Allcock Trophy

Epsom played Purley Bury 'A' at home on Sunday 22nd May 2016 in the above competition and won on 1 rink, drew on the other & won overall by 2 shots.

Details:

Rink 5  Anne Hoffmann  Gill Sperring  Les Owen  Graham Naish  drew 16 - 16

Epsom got off to a good start & led 12 - 4 after 10 ends.  Purley Bury drew level, 13 - 13 on the 16th end the game also finished level.

Rink 6  Sandra Huxford  Eileen Mills  Martin Harbottle  David Sowdon  won 18 - 16

Epsom also lead after 10 ends on this rink, 10 - 8 and kept the lead for the rest of the morning.  They won by 2 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 34  Purley Bury 'A' 32

Martin Harbottle played his first game in this competition.

 

Bowls England Men's Two Fours

Epsom men played Cheam at home on Saturday 21st May 2016 in the above competition and lost on both rinks. They played a very strong team and made a good account of themselves especially in the first half of the game.

Details:

Rink 4  Keith Roberts  George Sperring  John Warren  Jim Scott  lost 15 - 24

After 10 ends the scores were level 8 - 8, but Cheam went ahead 14 - 9 after 15 ends.  Epsom fought back well to level the scores again, 15 - 15 after 18 ends, but then dropped 3 3's over the last three ends to lose by 9 shots.

Rink 5  Andrew Turnbull  John Huxford  Les Owen  Graham Naish  lost 15 - 19

After 12 ends the scores were level 8 - 8, but Epsom then dropped 10 shots over the next 3 ends to go behind 8 - 18.  Epsom then fought back well winning the next 5 ends, but lost by 4 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 30   Cheam 43

Ladies' Friendly v Malden Manor

Epsom Ladies travelled to Maldon Manor on Tuesday 17th May 2016 to play in their second Friendly Triples Match of the season.  They won on 1 rinks, lost on 1 rink & overall 42 - 23.

Details:

Rink 2  Frances Suttonwood  Sylvia Smart  Anne Hoffmann  lost 13 - 19

This was fairly close for the first 10 ends, but Epsom was 6 - 10 behind.  However, they then had 2 good ends to take the lead 12 - 10.  Epsom was outplayed over the remaining ends being out scored 9 shots to 1 & lost by 6 shots.

Rink 3  Sandra Huxford  Ruth Baker  Gill Sperring  won 29 - 4

Epsom dominated this game right from the start and led 12 - 1 after 8 ends.  They then won the next 5 ends scoring a total of 13 shots to go further ahead 25 - 1.  They won by 25 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 42  Malden Manor 23

 

Mixed Match v Insurance BA

Epsom played at home in the very first mixed match of the season against the Insurance BA on Sunday 15th May 2016. Epsom won on all 4 rinks - winning the match 107 - 55.

Details:

Rink 3  Brian Collis  Frank Thompson  Les Owen  John Warren  won 33 - 14

Epsom made a slow start on this rink, but soon got into the game to lead 12 - 10 after 10 ends.  They dominated the rest of the game & led 23 - 15 after 15 ends and won by 19 shots.

Rink 4  Keith Roberts  Sylvia Smart  Derek Hoffmann  Geoff Purrott  won 29 - 18

After 10 ends Epsom was 1 shot down, 11 - 12, but played well in the second half to win by 11 shots.

Rink 5  Vic Phillips  Pat Walmsley  Brian Kenyon  John Huxford  won 17 - 13

This was a much closer game than the other 3 rinks.  However, Epsom held the lead up to end 16 when the game was 12 - 12.  Epsom scored 5 shots to 1 over the remaining ends to win by 4 shots.

Rink 6  Bill Lawrence  Mike James  David Ganney  Sandra Huxford  won 28 - 10

Epsom got off to a storming start & led 12 - 0 after just 5 ends.  They continued to score heavily & led 27 - 4 after 15 ends.  Epsom won by 18 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 107   Insurance BA 55

 

Men's League Match v Sutton

Epsom Men played at home v Sutton on Saturday 14th May 2016. Epsom won on two rinks, lost on two rinks and lost overall 68 - 79 (4 - 8).

Details:

Rink 1  Brian Kenyon  Geoff Purrott  Martin Harbottle  Les Owen  lost 18 - 22

Epsom held the initiative in this game for 15 ends.  They led 11 - 8 after 10 ends and 13 - 12 after 15 ends. Epsom lost the lead after 18 ends and finally lost by 4 shots.

Rink 2  Stefan Tomm  Andrew Turnbull  John Warren  John Huxford    won 20 - 16

After 10 ends the scores were level 9 - 9 and still level 14 - 14 after 15 ends.  Epsom had the better of the final ends and won by 4 shots.

Rink 3  Keith Roberts  John Hart  Terry Berry   Graham Naish  won 19 - 11

After 10 ends Epsom led 9 - 3 and led for the rest of the game.  They won by 8 shots.

Rink 4  Howard Ellis  Bob Blaker  John Meningen  Jim Scott  lost 11 - 30

This rink were outplayed all afternoon.  They were 5 - 15 down after 10 ends and 9 - 26 behind after 18 ends.  They were well beaten by 19 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 68   Sutton 79     Epsom 4 points  Sutton 8 points

 

Men's League Match v Purley Bury

Epsom Men started the defence of the title won last year with an excellent win against Purley Bury. This win beat the previous best win of +26 shots in 2011 & the best rink win of +8 also in 2011.  Epsom won 3 rinks, lost one rink and won overall 100 - 59 (10 - 2).

Rink 3  Keith Roberts  John Hart  Terry Berry   Graham Naish  won 26 - 8

After 9 ends Epsom led 8 - 6, but then won the next 7 ends to go ahead 21 - 6.  Purley Bury only scored 2 more shots leaving Epsom winners by 18 shots.

Rink 4  Howard Ellis  John Warren  John Meningen  Jim Scott  lost 15 - 16

After 10 ends Epsom led 9 - 6 & were still ahead 13 - 10 after 15 ends.  The last few ends were keenly contested, but Epsom lost by just the 1 shot.

Rink 5  Brian Kenyon  Bill Lawrence  Martin Harbottle  Les Owen  won 33 - 16

Epsom dominated this game all afternoon.  They led 16 - 7 after 10 ends, 26 - 11 after 15 ends & went on to win by 17 shots.

Rink 6  Bob Blaker  Geoff Purrott  John Huxford  David Sowdon  won 26 - 19

After 10 ends Epsom led by 1 shot, 9 - 8 but went behind 14 - 16 on the 16th end. They scored 12 shots to 3 over the remaining ends to win by 7 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 100   Purley Bury 59     Epsom 10 points  Purley Bury 2 points

John Meningen played his very first East Surrey League match for Epsom & becomes the 151st player to represent Epsom in this League.

 

Men's Friendly v Carshalton Beeches

Epsom Men travelled to Carshalton Beeches on Saturday 7th May 2016 to play a Friendly Match.  They won on 3 rinks, lost on 1 rink, but won overall 79 - 63.

Rink 2  Bill Lawrence  Arthur Upward  Geoff Purrott  Martin Harbottle  won 23 - 17

Epsom got off to a slow start on this rink finding themselves 3 - 9 down after 8 ends.  They levelled the scores 10 - 10 after 12 ends & had the better of the remaining ends.  They won by 6 shots.

Rink 3  Howard Ellis  Derek Hoffmann  Andrew Turnbull  John Warren  lost 13 - 16

Epsom got off to a poor start finding themselves 0 - 9 down after 8 ends.  They slowly got back into the game, but were still behind, 6 - 15 after 15 ends.  They scored 5 shots on end 20 finally losing by 3 shots.

Rink 4  Mike James  Roy Ward  John Hart  Bob Blaker  won 23 - 12

Epsom led throughout this game.  They were 9 - 5 up after 10 ends, 14 - 10 after 15 ends & finished strongly to win by 11 shots.

Rink 5  Geoff Benfield  David Ganney  Brian Kenyon  Peter Miller  won 20 - 18

This rink also started slowly, but were only 1 shot behind, 10 - 11 after 10 ends.  They went further behind after 15 ends, 13 - 17 but had a strong finish winning by 2 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 79  Carshalton Beeches 63

 

Ladies' Friendly v Supreme

Epsom Ladies travelled to Supreme on Thursday 5th May 2016 to play in the very first Friendly Triples Match of the season.  They lost on 2 rinks, drew on one rink, but lost overall 37 - 50.

Details:

Rink 2  Sylvia Smart Ruth Nixon  Eileen Mills  lost 10 - 16

The Ladies on this rink were behind all afternoon.  They were 6 - 10 behind after 10 ends, 8 - 14 adrift after 15 ends and lost by 6 shots.

Rink 3  Audrey Jones  Anne Hoffmann  Gill Sperring  drew 14 - 14

After 10 ends Epsom was 5 - 9 down, but came back well to go ahead 13 - 9 after 15 ends.  Supreme fought back well to tie the triple.

Rink 4  Pat Walmsley  Ruth Baker  Sandra Huxford  lost 13 - 20

After 10 ends Epsom was 6 - 13 behind and 12 - 18 down after 15 ends.  They lost by 7 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 37   Supreme 50

 

President's Team v Captain's Team
The annual match between the President's Team & the Captain's team took place on Monday 2nd May 2016.  The President's Team won 86 - 75.  This was well supported by members with the match being 2 Triples & 3 Rinks.

After 11 ends the President was winning 13 - 6, but the Captain came back strongly winning all the remaining ends to win by 4 shots.

The Captain's rink led after 3 ends, but went behind for the rest of the game.  They did get back to just 1 shot down, 16 - 15 after 14 ends, but lost by 4 shots.

The Captain's rink led 11 - 5 after 10 ends, but the President's team fought back to be 3 shots adrift after 15 ends.  However, they were beaten by 8 shots.

This turned out to a very even contest.  After 11 ends the scores were level, 10 - 10 and they finally drew.

After 6 ends the Captain's team led 4 - 2, but were then outplayed for the rest of the afternoon.  The President's team going on to win by 19 shots.

Epsom Men travelled to Reigate Priory on Saturday 30th April 2016 to play in the very first Friendly Match of the season.  They won on 2 rinks, lost on 2 rinks, but won overall 75 - 65.

After 10 ends Epsom was 7 - 8 down, but went ahead 14 - 9 after 15 ends.  They went on to in by 5 shots.

This rink got off to a slow start finding themselves 8 - 13 down after 10 ends.  They closed the gap slightly to 4 shots, 15 - 19 after 18 ends, but lost by 5 shots.

Epsom dominated this game all afternoon.  They led 19 - 3 after 10 ends, 26 - 5 after 15 ends and went on to win by 21 shots.

Epsom was outplayed on this rink.  They were 3 - 13 adrift after 10 ends, 5 - 15 behind after 15 ends going on to lose by 11 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 75  Reigate Priory 65

John Meningen played his very first game for Epsom Bowling Club.
