Bowls England Ladies Top Club (Top 10)

The Ladies played Cheam Fields at home on Sunday 15th June 2014 and lost on all 4 disciplines.

Details:

Singles: Lyz Warren  lost 19 - 21

Once again in this competition Lyz started well.  She led 10 - 4 after 10 ends & 14 - 6 after 15 ends.  Her opponent fought back well and took the lead 18 - 19 after 25 ends.  Lyz levelled on the next end, 19 - 19, but then dropped two singles to lose a very close contest.

Pairs:  Anne Hoffmann  Jane Wheeler  lost 11 - 28

Epsom's pair really struggled to get going in this game and found themselves 0 - 20 down after 10 ends.  They scored 3 shots on the next end, but continued to be outplayed.  They eventually lost by 17 shots.

Triples:  Sandra Huxford  Ruth Nixon  Eileen Mills   lost 13 - 20

The Ladies Triple started very well and led 10 - 5 after 10 ends & 13 - 12 after 15 ends.  However, they dropped 8 shots over the last 3 ends to lose by 7 shots.

Fours:  Ruth Baker  Jo Ellis  Sylvia Smart  Gill Sperring   lost 11 - 23

Epsom's Four were always behind in this game.  After 10 ends they were adrift 4 - 11 and went further behind 6 - 20 after 15 ends.  They lost by 12 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 54  Cheam Fields 92    Epsom 0 points  Cheam Fields 4 points.

It must be noted that this was an excellent performance by the Ladies in this Competition.  This was the first time in their history that they had progressed from the first round.

 

Ember Open Triples

Epsom’s Triple consisting of Bill Lawrence, Derek Hoffmann & John Huxford played Walton on Sunday 15th June 2014 and won 19 - 11.

 
Windeler Cup
The Annual Windeler Cup was held on Saturday 14th June 2014. 24 members turned up to play & and a round robin of games was arranged consisting of 4 ends for each game. Two groups were organised with the winners of each group playing each other over 5 ends for the trophy.
The final was contested between Derek Jones, Bob Blaker & Derek Hoffmann against Mike James, Anne Hoffmann & John Warren.
After 3 ends John’s team led 4 - 0, but Derek’s team fought back well, but just failed to secure a draw to force an extra end.
John’s team won 4 - 3.

Sutton & District B A Yonwin Cup

Epsom travelled to Carshalton Beeches on Wednesday 11th June 2014 and won on 1 rink, lost the other 2 & the match 53 - 72.  This was a very disappointing evening as Epsom have a good record in this Competition.

Details:

Rink 2  John Hart  John Huxford  Mick Gray  Les Owen  lost 15 - 26

After 10 ends Epsom was 8 - 11 down, and were still 3 shots adrift after 15 ends (13 - 16).  Epsom was outplayed over the remaining 6 ends finally losing by 11 shots.

Rink 3  Stefan Tomm  Geoff Purrott  Martin Harbottle  Peter Miller  lost 16 - 30

Epsom struggled on this rink all evening.  They were 8 - 18 down after 10 ends, 14 - 26  behind after 15 ends going on to lose by 14 shots.

Rink 6  Bob Blaker  George Sperring  Terry Berry  Graham Naish  won 22 - 16

The first half of this game was finely balanced with the scores level, 10 - 10 after 10 ends.  Epsom played well during the second half and led 16 - 14 after 15 ends going on to win by 6 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 53   Carshalton Beeches  72

Bob Blaker, Terry Berry & Mick Gray played in their first game in this Competition.

 

Surrey Triples

Epsom's Triple of Howard Ellis, David Bragg & Andrew Turnbull went out of the Surrey Triples at home against Carshalton on Tuesday 10th June 2014.

Epsom went behind 4 - 14 after 10 ends, but fought back really well to get within 1 shot of Carshalton, 13 - 14 after 14 ends.  Going into the last end Epsom was 15 - 16 down and held the shot to level the scores right up to the very last bowl played by the Carshalton skip.  He played a very good bowl to gain the shot leaving Epsom losing 15 - 17.  This has been an excellent performance by the Epsom Triple this season - very well done from all at Epsom Bowling Club.

 

Surrey Fours

Epsom's four of Howard Ellis, George Sperring, Terry Berry & Graham Naish progressed to the 5th round of the Surrey Fours on Monday 9th June 2014 with a win against Wallington.

After 11 ends the scores were level 9 - 9, but Epsom went into the lead 18 - 9 after 15 ends.  Wallington conceded after 18 ends with the score 19 - 11 to Epsom.

 

Chrystie League

Epsom played their first game of the season against Esher on Monday 9th June 2014 and won on one rink, lost on the other & the match 34 - 36

Rink 2  Tony Dunn  Peter Humphreys  Andrew Turnbull  Fred Read  won 24 - 13

After just 7 ends Epsom found themselves 1 - 11 down.  However, they scored 16 shots over the next 4 ends to go ahead 17 - 11.  They continued to play well running out winners by 11 shots.

Rink 3  Bob Blaker  Vic Phillips  Derek Hoffmann  Ron Snow  lost 10 - 23

Epsom struggled all evening on this rink and found themselves 1 - 17 down after just 7 ends.  They failed to make much more impact in the game finally losing by 13 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 34  Esher 36    Epsom 1 point  Esher 3 points

 

Ladies ESL

Epsom played away at Horley on Sunday 8th June 2014 & won on both rinks and the match 47 - 26 (4 - 0).

This was the second League match of the season & both wins with a 4 - 0 result in points.

After 10 ends Epsom was 1 shot down, 6 - 7 & still 1 shot adrift after 15 ends, 10 - 11.  They fought well over the remaining ends to snatch a 1 shot win.

Rink 2  Sandra Huxford  Jo Ellis  Eileen Mills  Marilyn Walsh  won 31 - 11

Epsom found themselves 8 - 10 down after 10 ends, but dominated the game from then on.  They were 19 - 10 up after 15 ends going on to win by 20 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 47  Horley 26

 

Bowls England Two Fours

Epsom men played against Purley Bury on Sunday 8th June 2014 and lost overall by 9 shots.

Details:

Rink 3  Howard Ellis  John Warren  Terry Hoye  Les Owen  lost 13 - 25

Epsom was behind throughout the morning.  After 10 ends they were behind 7 - 11 and then had another 2 bad ends to go further adrift 8 - 21 after 15 ends,  They went on to lose by 12 shots.

Rink 5  Brian Kenyon  Pat Buckley  Jim Scott  Graham Naish   won 16 - 13

Once again this rink played well together.  They led 6 - 5 after 10 ends, 10 - 8 after 15 ends finally winning by 3 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 29  Purley Bury 38

 

East Surrey League - Men

Epsom beat Ashtead at home on Saturday 7th June 2014.  They won on 2 rinks, drew one & lost on the 4th.  They won overall 91 - 84 (9 - 3).

Details:

Rink 2 Geoff Purrott  Andrew Turnbull  Terry Hoye  Mick Gray  drew 17 - 17

Epsom got of to a good start on this rink and led 9 - 5 after 10 ends.  Ashtead came back well in the game and led 14 - 10 after 15 ends.  Epsom battled well over the last 6 ends and went into the last end 3 shots adrift.  They managed to score the 3 necessary for a draw.

Rink 3  Bob Blaker  Bill Lawrence  Pat Buckley  Peter Miller  won 29 - 20

Epsom started badly on this rink going 0 - 8 down after 4 ends.  They came back well to take the lead 12 - 10 after 9 ends.  On the 11th end they scored 7 shots and stayed in control for the rest of the afternoon going on to win by 9 shots.

Rink 4  Tony Dunn  John Hart  George Sperring  Graham Naish  won 25 - 21

After 10 ends Epsom was 10 - 12 down, but were ahead 17 - 13 after 15 ends.  After 19 ends they had a commanding lead 25 - 14, but then dropped 7 shots over the last two ends.  They won by 4 shots.

Rink 5  Brian Kenyon  David Bragg  John Warren  Les Owen  lost 20 - 26

After 11 ends Epsom was behind 5 - 15, but fought well to get back into the game to level the scores 18 - 18 after 17 ends.  Going into the last end Epsom were 20 - 21 down, but Ashtead scored 5 shots leaving Epsom losing by 6 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 91  Ashtead 84    Epsom 9 points  Ashtead 3 points

 

Cropley Cup

The Annual match between the Men & Ladies took place on Wednesday 4th June 2014.  The Men won on two of the 3 rinks & the match 62 - 48.

After 10 ends the scores were level 9 - 9, but the Men had the better of the remaining ends going on to win by 10 shots.

              v  Mary Bragg  Audrey Jones  Sylvia Smart  Gill Sperring

This was a good contest for 13 ends when the Men led 16 - 12.  However, the last 5 ends were dominated by the men when they scored a total of 12 shots to win by 16 shots.

Rink 3  Stefan Tomm  Arthur Upward  Vic Phillips  Peter Humphreys lost 11 - 23

              v  Anne Hoffmann  Claire Collis  Jo Ellis  Lyz Warren

The Ladies outplayed the Men for most of this game.  After 10 ends they led 13 - 2 and went to win by 12 shots.

Final Score:  Men 62  Ladies 48

 

Mixed match v Malden Manor

Epsom play a mixed match against Malden Manor on the 3rd June 2014 and won on 3 rinks, lost on 1 rink and won the match 100 - 52.

Details:

Rink 1  Derek Jones  Jo Ellis  Anne Hoffmann  Peter Humphreys  lost 18 - 19

Epsom had a very good start on this rink and led 13 - 5 after 10 ends.  They led 16 - 9 after 16 ends, but Malden Manor finished the game strongly going on to win by just 1 shot.

Rink 2  Bob Blaker  Geoff Benfield  Ruth Baker  Marilyn Walsh  won 19 - 15

After 10 ends Epsom was behind 5 - 10, but they had an excellent second half outscoring Malden Manor 14 - 5 to win by 4 shots.

Rink 3  Audrey Jones  Bob Lister  Lyz Warren Terry Hoye  won 37 - 7

Epsom dominated this game all afternoon.  They raced into a 20 - 4 lead after 10 ends.  They continued this momentum going on to win by 30 shots.

Rink 4  David Ruston  Mary Bragg  Jane Wheeler  John Warren  won 26 - 11

Epsom led 11 - 7 after 10 ends and 21 - 8 after 15 ends.  They finished strongly winning by 15 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 100  Malden Manor 52

 

Mixed Match v Popes Mead

Epsom travelled to Popes Mead for a Mixed Friendly match on 1st June 2014 and won on 4 rinks, lost on 2 rinks and won the match 125 - 113.

Details:

Rink 1  Arthur Upward  Trish Tewfik  Derek Martin  John Huxford  won 32 - 14

Epsom went into a 16 - 3 lead after 10 ends and continued to dominate the game.  They led 21 - 10 after 15 ends going on to win by 18 shots.

Rink 2  Frank Thompson  Derek Jones  David Ganney  Terry Berry  won 20 - 18

After 9 ends Epsom was 5 - 9 down, but then won the next 9 ends scoring a total of 15 shots to lead 20 - 9.  The last 3 ends were won by Popes Mead when they scored a total of 9 shots.  Epsom held out to win by 2 shots.

Rink 3  Audrey Jones  David Rundle  Derek Hoffmann  John Warren  won 22 - 21

Epsom led 9 - 6 after 10 ends, but went behind 11 - 19 after 15 ends.  Going into the last end Epsom was 17 - 21, but they scored 5 shots to snatch a narrow win by 1 shot.

Rink 4  Bill Lawrence  Pat Walmsley  Eric Brown  Terry Hoye  lost 18 - 24

Epsom led 12 - 9 after 12 ends and 16 - 14 after 17 ends.  On the 18th end they dropped 8 shots which turned the game allowing Popes Mead to go on to win by 6 shots.

Rink 5  Bob Blaker  Claire Collis  Andrew Turnbull  George Sperring  won 20 - 14

Epsom led 10 - 9 after 10 ends and won the next 7 ends to go further ahead 20 - 9.  They went on to win by 6 shots.

Rink 6  Tony Dunn  Janet Newman  Cyril Newman  Martin Harbottle  lost 13 - 22

Epsom was outplayed for most of this game.  They found themselves 2 - 17 down after 12 ends, but scored 8 shots over the next 3 ends to narrow the difference to 7 shots.  They eventually lost by 9 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 125  Popes Mead 113

David Rundle played his first game since joining the Club.

 

Bowls England Two Fours

Epsom men won by 3 shots at Godalming & Farncombe on Sunday 1st June 2014.  This turned out to be a very odd game with one Epsom rink losing badly & the other having an excellent win.

Not a good morning for Epsom on this rink with all 4 players finding the green a challenge.  After 10 ends they were 3 - 18 down & failed to make much more impact in the game.  They eventually were well beaten by 17 shots.

Rink 5  Brian Kenyon  Pat Buckley  Jim Scott  Graham Naish   won 31 - 11

All 4 players played well on this rink.  They led 15 - 5 after 10 ends & 25 - 7 after 15 ends.  Graham had an outstanding morning converting many ends to Epsom's advantage.  They won by 20 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 41  Godalming & Farncombe 38

 

Bowls England - Ladies Top Club

The Ladies travelled to Wallington to play in the B E Top Club Competition on Sunday morning 1st June 2014 & had an excellent win.  This is the first time that the Ladies have progressed to the 3rd round of this Competition.

East Surrey League - Men - played on Saturday 31st May 2014

Epsom men broke 3 records (against Old Coulsdon) in their excellent win in this match. This was the first time since the League began in 1987 that the men have not lost a rink in a match against Old Coulsdon. The other records broken in this match was the highest shot difference win  - 31 shots (previously 17 shots) & the highest rink win - 16 shots (previously 15 shots).

Epsom got off to an excellent start when they led 9 - 1 after 5 ends.  They continued to play well and led further 15 - 2 after 10 ends & 17 - 7 after 15 ends.  They finished well winning by 16 shots.

Rink 2  Brian Kenyon  John Hart  Pat Buckley  Peter Miller  drew 16 - 16

This turned out to be a very close game as the final score suggests.  After 10 ends Epsom led 8 - 6, but Old Coulsdon took the lead 10 - 13 after 15 ends.  Going into the last end Epsom was 2 shots adrift, but they scored 2 shots for a draw.

Rink 5  Geoff Purrott  Terry Hoye  Martin Harbottle  Jimmy Scott  won 30 - 15

For 15 ends Epsom dominated this game.  They led 13 - 7 after 10 ends & 24 - 7 after 15 ends.  Epsom went on to win by 15 shots.

Rink 6  Howard Ellis  George Sperring  Terry Berry  Graham Naish  drew 20 - 20

Epsom struggled for the first 9 ends in this game when they were 6 - 10 behind.  However, they scored 6 shots over the next two ends to take the lead 12 - 10.  They then went into a 19 - 12 lead after 16 ends, but Old Coulsdon fought back really well to force a draw.

Final Score:  Epsom 92   Old Coulsdon 61    Epsom 10 points  Old Coulsdon 2 points

 

East Surrey League - Ladies - played on Saturday 31st May 2014

Epsom Ladies won on both rinks against Old Coulsdon. The last time this happened was in 2005.

Details:

Rink 3  Sandra Huxford  Jo Ellis  Lyz Warren  Marilyn Walsh  won 16 - 15

Epsom Ladies led 5 - 2 after 5 ends, but then went behind 7 - 9 after 10 ends.  They played well over the remaining ends holding out to win by just 1 shot.

Rink 4  Jane Wheeler  Anne Hoffmann  Eileen Mills  Gill Sperring  won 20 - 12

Epsom led 9 - 5 after 10 ends & 14 - 8 after 15 ends.  They continued to play well running out winners by 8 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 36  Old Coulsdon 27      Epsom 4 points  Old Coulsdon 0 points.

 

Sutton & District Bowling Association

Epsom played Cheam Fields in the Arthur Hughes Triples on Saturday 31st May 2014 and won 14 - 11.  This was an excellent win for Howard Ellis, David Bragg & Graham Naish as their opponents won this competition last year.

 

Ladies Friendly v Ember

Epsom Ladies played a Friendly Triples match against Ember on Thursday 29th May 2014 & had an excellent win on both rinks and the match convincingly by 27 shots.

Rink 2  Audrey Jones  Anne Hoffmann  Marilyn Walsh  won 24 - 6

Epsom began well and raced into a 11 - 0 lead after just 6 ends.  They continued to outplay Ember and lead 23 - 3 after 15 ends finally winning by 18 shots.

Rink 4  Sandra Huxford  Eileen Mills  Gill Sperring  won 22 - 13

After 10 ends Epsom led 11 - 7 & 18 - 9 after 15 ends.  They finished well winning by 9 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 46  Ember 19

 

Men's Friendly v Redhill

Epsom men played at home against Redhill in a Triples Friendly match on Sunday 25th May 2014 and won on all rinks.

Details:

Rink 2  Mike James  John Warren  Mick Gray  won 27 - 10

After 10 ends this rink were 13 - 7 ahead and increased their lead to 22 - 8 after 15 ends.  They went on to win by 17 shots.

Rink 3  Howard Ellis  Derek Hoffmann  Terry Berry  won 31 - 9

Epsom dominated this game throughout the afternoon.  They led 17 - 6 after 10 ends, 28 - 6 after 15 ends and won convincingly by 22 shots.

Rink 4  Bill Lawrence  John Hart  David Bragg  won 20 - 7

Epsom held the lead throughout this game.  They led 11 - 6 after 10 ends, 15 - 7 after 15 ends finally winning by 13 shots.

Rink 5  Derek Jones  Eric Brown  Peter Miller  won 20 - 17

Epsom got off to a bad start on this rink finding themselves 0 - 8 down after just 5 ends.  They fought back well and levelled the scores 11 - 11 after 14 ends. On the 15th end they dropped 5 shots, but immediately replied gaining 5 shots on the next end.  Redhill took the lead 16 - 17 going into the last end, but Epsom finished strongly scoring 4 shots to snatch a win by 3 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 98  Redhill 43

 

East Surrey League - Men

Epsom men travelled the short distance to Sutton on Saturday 24th May 2014 to play in an East Surrey League match.  This turned out to be an excellent win for Epsom on all rinks & winning the match 12 - 0.

Details:

Rink 2  Howard Ellis  Andrew Turnbull  Terry Berry George Sperring  won 19 - 17

Epsom found themselves 7 - 10 down after 10 ends and 9 - 17 behind after 16 ends.  They fought back well winning the remaining 5 ends scoring a total of 10 shots to win by 2 shots.

Rink 3  Geoff Purrott  Terry Hoye  John Huxford  Jim Scott  on 26 - 15

This rink dominated play throughout the afternoon.  They led 13 - 6 after 10 ends & 19 - 12 after 15 ends.

They finished strongly winning by 11 shots.

Rink 4  Stefan Tomm  David Bragg  Mick Gray  Les Owen  won 21 - 20

As the score suggests this was a very close game all afternoon.  The scores were level 10 - 10 after 11 ends & 15 - 15 after 15 ends.  Sutton levelled the scores 20 - 20 with one end to play and the last end the shot changed hands several times.  Epsom managed to gain the 1 shot to win a very close exciting game.

Rink 5  Brian Kenyon  David Ganney  Martin Harbottle  Peter Miller  won 24 - 13

Just like rink 3 Epsom had the upper hand on this rink.  They led 16 - 4 after 10 ends, 18 - 8 after 15 ends going on to win by 11 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 90  Sutton 65    Epsom 12 points  Sutton 0 points

 

Mixed Friendly match v Epsom Park

Epsom played at home against Epsom Park in a mixed friendly match on Wednesday 21st May 2014 and won 83 - 67.

Details:

Rink 1  Tony Dunn  Pat Walmsley  Derek Martin  Terry Hoye  won 25 - 13

Epsom led 11 - 6 after 10 ends & went further ahead 18 - 8 after 15 ends.  Despite dropping 4 shots on the 18th end they went on to win by 12 shots.

Rink 2  Derek Jones  Bill Lawrence  Fred Read  Geoff Purrott  won 27 - 11

After 10 ends Epsom led 12 - 7 & 20 - 8 after 15 ends.  They continued to play well winning by 16 shots.

Rink 3  Brian Kenyon  Eddie Needham  Sylvia Smart  Cyril Newman  won 18 - 17

This turned out to be a close game.  Epsom was 7 - 9 down after 10 ends, but took the lead 13 - 10 after 15 ends.  Epsom had a good lead, 17 - 10, after 17 ends but allowed Epsom Park into the game to draw level 17 - 17 after 20 ends.  Epsom managed to win the last end by just 1 shot.

Rink 4  Audrey Jones  Sue Needham  Derek Hoffmann  Eric Brown  lost 13 - 26

Epsom only scored 4 shots over the first 14 ends when they found themselves 4 - 20 adrift.  They eventually lost by 13 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 83  Epsom Park 67

 

East Surrey League

Epsom played at home against Purley on Sunday 18th May 2014 and won the match 94 - 55 (11 - 1).  This was an excellent come back for the men after the defeat last week.  They won on 3 rinks & drew the fourth.

After 10 ends Epsom was 6 - 11 down & 14 - 15 behind after 15 ends.  On the 19th end Epsom found themselves 3 shots adrift, but had two very good ends to secure a well deserved draw.

After 10 ends Epsom was 9 - 10 down, but had an excellent second half when they outscored Purley 17 - 7 to win by 9 shots.

Rink 4  Stefan Tomm  Geoff Purrott  John Warren  Jim Scott  won 26 - 10

After 10 ends Epsom led 8 - 4.  They continued to out score Purley (18 - 6) going on to win by 16 shots.

Rink 5  Howard Ellis  George Sperring  Terry Berry  Graham Naish  won 24 - 10

After 8 ends Epsom led 9 - 4 and just like rink 4 dominated the rest of the game.  They scored 15 shots to Purley's 6 shots to win by 14 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 94  Purley 55    Epsom 11 points  Purley 1 point

David Ganney played in his very first East Surrey League game in this match & becomes the 148th member of the Club to play in this League since it began.

 

Ladies Friendly

Epsom Ladies played a Triples match away at Banstead Neville on Tuesday 20th May 2014 and won on two rinks, lost the third but won the game 60 - 50.

Bowls England Ladies Top 10

Epsom Ladies travelled to Cheam on Sunday 18th May 2014 to play in the first round of the Bowls England Top 10.  They had an excellent win against a very strong Club.  They won the Pairs & Triples, lost the Singles & Fours, but won overall on shots.

The Ladies dominated throughout the afternoon on this rink.  They led 12 - 6 after 10 ends, 18 - 8 after 15 ends and finished strongly to win by 15 shots.

As the final score suggests this was a close contest.  Epsom led 9 - 6 after 10 ends & 17 - 11 after 16 ends.  They dropped a total of 5 shots over the last 2 ends to win narrowly by 1 shot.

Fours:  Ruth Baker  Ruth Nixon  Jane Wheeler  Gill Sperring  lost 18 - 23

Epsom was 10 - 13 behind at 10 ends, 13 - 19 adrift after 15 ends, but fought back well finally losing by 5 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 76  Cheam 71  (2 - 2)

Bowls England Top Club

Epsom played Cheam Fields on Thursday 15th May 2015 and lost 2 - 3.

Details:

Singles:  David Sowdon lost 17 - 22

After 10 ends David was 8 - 9 down & further behind 8 - 16 after 15 ends.  He recovered well to be 16 - 17 adrift after 20 ends, but was beaten by 5 shots after 25 ends.

Two Wood:  Martin Harbottle  lost 13 - 18

Martin led 9 - 8 after 10 ends, but the scores were level 12 - 12 after 15 ends.  After a further 4 ends the game was over with Martin losing 13 - 18 after 19 ends.

Pairs:  Stefan Tomm  Peter Miller  won 15 - 14 (17 ends played)

This turned out to be a very close game.  Epsom was 8 - 10 down after 10 ends, but went ahead 13 - 12 after 15 ends.  The game was not completed as Epsom could not win overall.

Triples:  Brian Kenyon  Pat Buckley  Les Owen  lost 12 -

Epsom was outplayed in this triple.  After 10 ends they were 5 - 14 down and despite scoring 5 shots on end 14 they went on to be well beaten by 8 shots.

Fours:  Howard Ellis  Geoff Purrott  George Sperring  Graham Naish  won 27 - 8 (20 ends played)

Epsom dominated this game all evening.  They led 12 - 6 after 10 ends, 19 - 7 after 15 ends finally winning by 19 shots.

Surrey v Warwickshire

Epsom hosted the Surrey v Warwickshire match on Tuesday 13th May 2013.  This turned out to be a very successful day thanks to the enormous amount of help & time given by a large number of members.

Epsom Bowling Club would like to thank ALL those members who gave up a big part of the day to assist.

Several complimentary remarks were received from both Surrey & Warwickshire players & officials.

Surrey won the match on 5 of the 6 rinks.

 

Ladies Friendly v New Malden

The Ladies played their first friendly of the 2014 season against Malden Manor on Tuesday 13th May and won on 1 rink, lost on the second & lost the match 27 - 39.

Bowls England Double Fours

Epsom played Purley Bury 'B' away on the 12th May 2014 & won on both rinks and the match 36 - 32.

The match did not get started on time as some of the Epsom players were delayed by an accident.  After a few ends the rain poured down which delayed the match even further.  The last 3 ends were played in darkness which was a great shame as the game was very close and could have gone either way.

Epsom got off to an excellent start and led 9 - 1 after just 5 ends.  Purley Bury levelled the scores, 9 - 9 after 11 ends and the game continued to be very close.  The scores were also level on end 17, 15 - 15.  On the 19th end Epsom scored 3 shots to lead 18 - 16 & going into the last end Epsom held just a 1 shot lead.  They scored 2 more shots on the final end to win by 3 shots.

Rink 4  Stefan Tomm  Mick Gray  David Sowdon  Les Owen  won 16 - 15

As the score suggests this was a very close contest.  After 10 ends Epsom led 8 - 7 & 14 - 9 after 15 ends.  Purley Bury finished strongly, but Epsom held out to win by 1 shot.

Mixed Friendly v Insurance BA

Epsom played the Insurance BA in a Mixed match on Sunday 11th May 2014. At the request of The Insurance BA this match was reduced to 4 Triples & one Pair.  The Pairs was played between Epsom players.  This result was the first time that Epsom had won on all rinks.

After 10 ends Epsom led 11 - 5 & 13 - 11 after 15 ends.  They went on to win by 3 shots.

Epsom led 10 - 3 after 10 ends, 15 - 12 after 15 ends and won by 3 shots.

Rink 3  Tony Dunn  Anne Hoffmann  John Huxford  won 27 - 6

Epsom dominated this game after 10 ends when the scores were level 6 - 6.  On the 11th end they scored 8 shots & continued to outplay their opponents.  They won comfortably by 21 shots.

Rink 4  Jane Wheeler  Eric Brown  Terry Hoye  won 27 - 4

Epsom was in control all afternoon on this rink.  They led 15 - 2 after 10 ends, 20 - 4 after 15 ends going on to win by 23 shots.

Rink 5  Ruth Baker  Vic Phillips  won 15 - 14

Ruth & Peter played against fellow members Sylvia Smart & Peter Humphreys in this Pairs game.  It turned out to be a very close game with the scores level on 10 ends, 8 - 8.  Going into the last end the scores were again level, 14 - 14, but Vic & Ruth managed to secure one shot to win a close game.

Men's ESL Match v Warlingham Park

The Men travelled to Warlingham Park on Saturday 10th May 2014 to play in their second East Surrey League Match of the season.  After the excellent win last week Epsom came down to earth losing to Warlingham Park for the first time since they joined the League in 2008.

After a very close first 5 ends Epsom began to dominate this game. They went ahead 17 - 8 after 10 ends & after 14 ends they still led by 5 shots (18 - 13).  Warlingham Park failed to score over the remaining ends and Epsom won comfortably by 18 shots.

Rink 2  Howard Ellis  Terry Hoye  Martin Harbottle  Graham Naish  lost 20 - 22

After 10 ends the scores were level 11 - 11, & Epsom then went ahead 15 - 11 after 13 ends.  Warlingham Park won the next 4 ends to take the lead 20 - 15.  Despite scoring 4 shots on end 18 Epsom still lost by 2 shots.

Rink 3  Stefan Tomm  John Huxford  David Sowdon  Jim Scott  lost 15 - 19

After 10 ends Epsom was 7 - 10 behind, but came back well to take the lead 14 - 13 after 16 ends.  Warlingham Park won the last 4 ends to beat Epsom by 4 shots.

Rink 4  Bob Blaker  Bill Lawrence  Pat Buckley  Peter Miller  lost 14 - 28

Epsom struggled on this rink throughout the afternoon.  They were adrift 5 - 16 after 10 ends, 11 - 20 after 15 ends eventually losing by 14 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 80    Warlingham Park 82   Epsom 2 points  Warlingham Park 10 points

Did you know

Apart from this being the first time that Epsom has lost against Warlingham Park they have done very well in the past.

Epsom's best win came in 2011 - winning by 51 shots.  The highest rink win, 31 - 10 also came in this game.  Out f the 28 rinks played since Warlingham Park joined the League in 2008 Epsom have won 17 out of the 28 played.

 

Bowls England - Tony Alcock Trophy

Epsom lost away to Cheam by 4 shots on Thursday 8th May 2014.

Details:

This was a very close game throughout the evening.  Epsom held a 5 shots advantage after 15 ends, but Cheam came back strongly over the last 6 ends to win by 4 shots.

Rink 4  Lyz Warren  Eileen Mills  Pat Buckley  Peter Miller  drew 21 - 21

Epsom raced into a 8 - 1 lead after just 5 ends, bur Cheam soon got back into the game.  After 15 ends Epsom led 15 - 14 and went further ahead 21 - 16 after 19 ends.  On the 20th end Epsom dropped 4 shots & 1 on the final end to draw 21 - 21.

The Annual match between the President's Team & Captain's team took place on Monday 5th May 2014.

Forty Eight members turned up to play in this Annual fixture & the game ended in a draw 96 - 96. The President, Derek Hoffmann, organised the day & provided Tea & Cakes for everyone after the match.

Men's East Surrey League Match v Horley

The Men travelled to Horley on Sunday 4th May 2014 to play in their very first East Surrey League Match of the season.  Epsom had an excellent win 97 - 51.  They won on all 4 rinks.

This rink dominated the game all afternoon.  After 10 ends they led 14 - 7 and stretched the lead to 27 - 8 after 18 ends.  They went on to win by 14 shots.

Rink 3  Stefan Tomm  David Bragg  John Warren  Pat Buckley   won 21 - 10

This rink also dominated the game.  They led 12 - 4 after 10 ends, 14 - 9 after 15 ends going on to win by 11 shots.

Rink 4  Howard Ellis  George Sperring Terry Berry Grahamm Naish  won 25 - 18

This turned out to be a very close game.  Epsom led 11 - 9 after 10 ends, but Horley drew level 12 - 12 after 12 ends.  Epsom then scored a total of 8 shots over the next two ends, but Horley came back once again to be within 3 shots after 17 ends.  However, Epsom wet on to win by 7 shots.

Rink 5  Brian Kenyon  Geoff Purrott  Terry Hoye  Les Owen  won 24 - 10

This rink also had a similar story to rinks 2 & 3.  They led 5 - 4 after 7 ends, but then scored a total of 16 shots without reply to lead 21 - 4.  Horley won 4 of the remaining ends, but Epsom won comfortably by 14 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 97  Horley 51    Epsom 12 points  Horley 0 points

Rink 2 won highest rink by virtue of winning one more end than rink 5.

Mick Gray played in his very first ESL match.  He becomes the 147th member to represent Epsom in the East Surrey League.

Men's Friendly v Carshalton Beeches

Epsom Men travelled to Carshalton Beeches to play a Friendly Triples match on Saturday 27th April 2014 and lost by 4 shots.

This rink was behind throughout the afternoon.  They were 10 13 behind after 10 ends losing by 2 shots.

Rink 3  Terry Hoye  Eric Brown  Mike Gray  won 20 - 16

After 10 ends Epsom led 13 - 4 & extended the lead to 19 - 4 after 13 ends.  Carshalton Beeches finished strongly, but Epsom held out to win by 4 shots.

Rink 4  Tony Dunn  Clive Banderet  Geoff Purrott  lost 12 - 29

Epsom were outplayed in this game.  Unfortunately Clive was taken ill after 3 ends & the game was reduced to Pairs.  Epsom lost by 17 shots.

Rink 5  Bob Blaker  Tony Jackman  John Huxford  won 19 - 8.

After going behind 3 - 4 after 7 ends Epsom dominated this game running out winners by 11 shots.

Men's Friendly v Chipstead

Epsom Men travelled to Chipstead to play their second Friendly match on Sunday 27th April 2014 and won on all 5 rinks.  This was an excellent win considering Epsom lost heavily last year in the corresponding fixture.

This rink started well & went into a 14 - 8 lead after 10 ends.  They kept the lead throughout the afternoon finishing well winning by 8 shots.

Rink 2  Terry Berry  George Sperring  David Bragg  Graham Naish  won 27 - 21

Epsom led 11 - 5 after 6 ends but Chipstead came back strongly winning the next 5 ends to go ahead 16 - 11.  However, Epsom had an excellent last 10 ends outscoring Chipstead 16 - 5 to win by 6 shots.

Rink 3  Brian Kenyon  Bill Lawrence  Pat Buckley  Peter Miller  won 28 - 16

This rink had an outstanding start and raced into a 19 - 1 lead after just 8 ends.  Although Chipstead came back into the game Epsom went on to win by 12 shots.

Rink 4  Tony Dunn  Ron Snow  Howard Ellis  Cyril Newman  won 18 - 14

Epsom led 11 - 3 after 10 ends, but Chipstead closed the gap to 4 shots after 15 ends.  Epsom continued to play well & won by 4 shots.

Rink 5  Geoff Purrott  Eric Brown  John Warren  Martin Harbottle  won 22 - 17

Epsom led 10 - 8 after 10 ends, but Chipstead came back to be just 2 shots behind after 13 ends (15 - 13).  The last 6 ends were keenly contested, but Epsom went on to win by 5 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 117  Chipstead 82

 

Men's Friendly v Reigate Priory

Epsom Men got off to an excellent win at Reigate Priory on Saturday 26th April 2014 winning 3 rinks, losing one rink & winning overall 94 - 58

After 10 ends Epsom was 12 - 9 ahead, but Reigate Priory came back well taking the lead 14 - 16 after 15 ends.  Epsom finally lost by 8 shots.

After 9 ends Epsom held a 1 shot lead, 6 - 5, but then scored a total of 24 shots without reply over the next 8 ends.  They went on to win comfortably by 26 shots.

Rink 4  Bill Lawrence  Mike Gibbs  Andrew Turnbull  John Warren  won 20 - 16

This rink was 8 - 10 down after 10 ends, but came back well to go ahead 15 - 11 after 15 ends.  The last few ends were keenly contested, but Epsom won by 4 shots.

Rink 5  Bob Blaker  Peter Humphreys  Terry Berry  Pat Buckley  won 25 - 11

Epsom led 8 - 6 after 10 ends and 13 - 9 after 15 ends.  They finished strongly winning by 14 shots.

Get Together Evening

Over 80 members attended the Pre Season Get Together on Friday 11th April 2014.

The President, Derek Hoffmann, welcomed everyone & then several members gave a short notice regarding the coming season.  This was a very successful evening.
