Sutton & District Bowling Association - Yonwin Cup

Epsom travelled the short distance to Ewell on Sunday 29th May 2011 to play in the Yonwin Cup.  Two years ago Epsom was knocked out in the first round of this competition by Ewell and Epsom was keen to reverse this defeat.  Epsom won very convincingly this year by 22 shots.

Details:

Bill Lawrence  John Huxford  Pat Buckley  Peter Miller won 35 - 5

Epsom dominated play all morning and led 16 - 3 after 10 ends, 24 - 5 after 15 ends and won by 30 shots.

John Hart  John Warren  Ron Mew  David Sowdon  lost 14 - 24

Epsom was 1 shot down after 10 ends, 11 - 12 & 4 shots behind, 14 - 18, after 15 ends.  However, Ewell finished strongly and won the rink by 10 shots.

Geoff Purrott  Cyril Newman  George Sperring  Graham Naish  won 21 - 19

This rink were also behind by 1 shot, 10 - 11 after 10 ends, but went ahead 18 - 15 after 15 ends.  The last few ends were very closely fought, but Epsom came through to win by 2 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 70  Ewell 48

John Huxford played in his very first game in the Yonwin Cup.

Epsom play Ashtead in the next round (to be played by 1st July 2011).

 

Men's League

Epsom played against Sutton on Saturday 28th June 2011 and won on 3 rinks & lost on the fourth.  They won the game 81 - 76 (5 - 1).

Details:

Rink 2  John Hart Cyril Newman  George Sperring  Graham Naish   won 25 - 16*

Epsom held the initiative throughout this game.  They led 13 - 7 after 10 ends, 16 - 11 after 15 ends and won by 9 shots.

Rink 3  Bill Lawrence Geoff  Purrott  Martin Harbottle  Peter Miller  won 24 - 15

Like rink 2 Epsom was in control all afternoon.  After 15 ends the led 20 - 7 & they too went on to win by 9 shots.

Rink 4  Brian Kenyon  John Warren  Pat Buckley  Les Owen  lost 12 - 29

This turned out to be a disastrous afternoon for this rink.  All four players played badly and were completely out bowled by Sutton.  After 15 ends Sutton led 23 - 10 and continued to dominate winning by 17 shots.

Rink 5  Stefan Tomm  Alan Wybrow  Ron Mew  David Sowdon  won 20 - 16

This rink had a very good first half and led 12 - 7 after 10 ends.  Sutton fought back well in the second half, but Epsom held on to win by 4 shots.

Mixed Friendly

Epsom travelled the short distance to Epsom Park to play in a Mixed Friendly & won on 2 rinks and drew the third.

Details:

Rink 4  Ruth Nixon  Bill Gates  Alan Wybrow  Ken Lacey  won 20 - 19

This was a very close game until the 17th end when Epsom scored 3 2's to take a 20 - 13 lead.  Epsom Park fought back well scoring 2 3's on the last 2 ends which was not quite enough leaving Epsom with a 1 shot victory.

Rink 5  Audrey Jones  Tony Dunn  Clive Banderet  Ron Snow  drew 18 - 18

This was a very close game all afternoon.  After 14 ends Epsom led 14 - 9, but then dropped 4 shots to allow Epsom Park back into the game.

Rink 6  Arthur Upward  Derek Martin  Bob Lister  Jo Ellis  won 29 - 6*

Epsom got off to a great start and led 14 - 0 after 10 ends.  They also dominated the rest of the game to win comfortably by 23 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 67  Epsom Park 43

Ladies' Friendly

The Ladies lost to Banstead Neville 43 - 76 on Tuesday 24th May 2011.  They lost on all 3 rinks:

Details:

Rink 4  Maggie O’Sullivan  Trish Tewfik  Tessa Hurworth  Gill Sperring  lost 8 - 29

This rink was outplayed all afternoon & were well beaten by 21 shots.

Rink 5  Audrey Jones   Lyz Warren  Maureen Trumble  Jan Allum  lost 17 - 23

Banstead Neville dominated the first 14 ends of this game, but Epsom rallied and came back strongly.  However, they could not quite catch up and lost by 6 shots.

Rink 6  Sylvia Smart  Dolly Snow  Eileen Mills  Sylvia Pearce  lost 18 - 24

Epsom trailed 9 - 13 after 10 ends, but went ahead 17 - 15 after 15 ends.  After 18 ends the scores were 18 - 18, but Banstead Neville finished scoring three 2's on the final 3 ends to snatch a win by 6 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 43  Banstead Neville 76

 

East Surrey League

Epsom travelled to Purley on Sunday 22nd May 2011 for their second ESL League match and won on 3 rinks & lost the fourth.  They won the match 85 - 63 (5 - 1).  This was a better result than last year as Epsom had a 4 - 2 win. This win gives 6th year in a row that Epsom have beaten Purley.

Details:

Rink 2  John Hart  Alan Wybrow  Jim Scott  Graham Naish   won 22 - 16

After 10 ends Epsom was ahead 14 - 11 and after the 17th end they held a 9 shot advantage. Purley scored 4 more shots giving Epsom a 6 shot win overall.

Rink 3  Bill Lawrence  Roy Doughty  Martin Harbottle  Peter Miller  won 22 - 17

This rink had an excellent first half and led 11 - 4 after 10 ends.  Purley came back well and levelled the game 15 - 15 after 16 ends.  Epsom scored 7 shots to Purley's 2 shots over the remaining ends to win by 5 shots.

Rink 4  Stefan Tomm  John Huxford  Ron Mew  David Sowdon  lost 17 - 20

This was a very close game right up to the 14th end, but then Purley scored 5 shots to take a 16 - 12 lead.  They held on leaving Epsom losing by 3 shots.

Rink 5  Brian Kenyon  Ron Snow  Pat Buckley  Les Owen  won 24 - 10*

As with rink 3 Epsom led 11 - 4 after 10 ends and outscored Purley 13 shots to 6 shots over the last part of the game to win comfortably by 14 shots.

Mixed Friendly v Cheam Fields

Epsom played Cheam Fields in a mixed friendly on Saturday 21st May 2011 and won on 2 rinks, drew on 1 rink and lost on the fourth.  Epsom won the match 86 - 60.

Details:

Rink 2  Vic Phillips  Tessa Hurworth  Len Philpott  Brian Kenyon  drew 20 - 20

This was a very close game.  Epsom led 11 -7 after 10 ends, but lost the lead on the 15th.  On the last end Epsom was 2 shots adrift and managed to get 2 shots to draw the rink.

Rink 3  Audrey Jones  Maureen Trumble  John Huxford  Geoff Purrott  lost 14 - 15

This was also a very close game. Epsom held a 1 shot advantage, 11 - 10 after 15 ends, but ended up losing by just the 1 shot.

Rink 4  Sandra Huxford  Derek Jones/Pat Buckley*  Ron Snow  Jo Ellis  won 22 - 12

This game was very even up to the 15th end when Epsom went ahead 15 - 10.  They continued to dominate the game and went on to win by 10 shots.

Rink 5  Bill Lawrence  Roy Doughty  Lyz Warren  John Warren  won 30 - 13*

The last 6 ends of this game decided the outcome of this rink.  After 15 ends Epsom led 18 - 12, but scored a total of 12 shots to Cheam Fields 1 shot giving the home side a 17 shot victory.

Bowls England Over 60's Double Fours

Epsom played Cheam on Saturday 21st May 2011 and lost narrowly.  This was a new 18 ends Competition  introduced by Tony Alcock.

Details:

Rink 1  Brian Kenyon  Anne Hoffmann  Eileen Mills  Peter Miller  lost 19 - 20

This rink got off to a very poor start finding themselves 0 - 9 down.  They were still down, 6 - 14 after 10 ends, but fought back very well to take the lead 18 - 15 after 15 ends.  With rink 2 having finished and losing by 3 shots this rink needed to win the final end to win the match.  Epsom was 3 shots down when Peter drew shot.  However, the Cheam skip took the bowl out and Peter failed to repeat his excellent first bowl.

Rink 2  Gill Sperring  Maggie O'Sullivan  David Sowdon  Pat Buckley  lost 14 - 17

This rink led for most of the morning, 8 - 7 at 10 ends & 14 - 11 at 15 ends.  However, they had a poor finish losing by 3 shots.

Final Scores:  Epsom 33  Cheam 37

 

Bowls England Top Club (Top 11)

Epsom men had an excellent win against Cheam on Friday 20th May 2011.  They won the Singles, Pairs & Fours and lost the Triples & Two Wood singles.  This was the second time that Epsom men have beaten Cheam in this Competition in the last 2 years.  This year the highlight of the win was in the Four Wood Singles when Brian Kenyon beat International player Chris Young.  This win goes a long way to soften the big loss last season to Cheam in the Yonwin Cup.

Details:

Two Wood Singles:  David Sowdon v Mike McDonagh

David got off to a good start and led 10 - 7 after 10 ends.  Mike had a better second half and won an excellent game 17 - 12 on the 19th end.

Four Wood Singles:  Brian Kenyon v Chris Young

Brian played very well indeed in this game.  He led 12 - 5 after 10 ends and went further ahead 18 - 10 after 16 ends.  Chris, using his vast experience, had 5 very good ends scoring a total of 10 shots to take the lead 20 - 18.  Brian held his nerve and won the match scoring three singles to win 21 - 20.

Pairs:  Martin Harbottle/Peter Miller v Alan Gover/Eamonn Nolan

Epsom had a great start and led 11 - 4 after 10 ends.  After 14 ends they led 14 - 5, but then dropped 5 shots on the 15th end allowing Cheam to stage a come back.  However, Epsom bounced back scoring 4 shots on end 18 to put the game safe.  They won 19 - 14.

Triples:  John Hart/Terry Hoye/Les Owen v Gary Stevens/Dan Morris/Gareth McDonagh

After 10 ends Epsom was down 5 - 7 and Cheam dominated the last 8 ends to win 18 - 8.

Fours:  Stefan Tomm/Ron Mew/Pat Buckley/Graham Naish v

             Gary Fitzgerald/Mick Gray/Mike Appleford/Simon Clarke

Epsom had a really excellent evening against a very strong Cheam Four.  After 10 ends they led 9 - 7 and dominated most of the play from then on.  Cheam gave themselves a slim chance of snatching victory with 4 shots on the 20th end to be behind by 4 shots.  Epsom played very well on the last end and restricted Cheam to just 2 shots to win the rink 18 - 16.

Final Score:  Epsom 3  Cheam 2

After the match Gill & George Sperring put on an excellent finger buffet which went down very well with everybody.

Epsom play Chipstead in the next round.

 

Ladies Friendly v Reigate Priory

The Ladies travelled to Reigate Priory on Thursday 19th May 2011 and registered their first win in a Friendly this season.  They won on all 3 rinks.

Details:

Rink 4  Audrey Jones  Eileen Mills  Sylvia Pearce  won 15 - 13

This was a very close game with Epsom leading 8 - 7 after 10 ends.  The second half was evenly contested, but Epsom held a 3 shot advantage going into the last end and Reigate Priory only managed 1 shot giving Epsom a 2 shot victory.

Rink 5  Trish Tewfik  Lyz Warren  Gill Sperring  won 15 - 14

This was also a close game.  After 10 ends Epsom led 10 - 7, but Reigate Priory had a good second half and needed 2 to draw the game on the last end managed just 1 shot.  Epsom winning narrowly by 1 shot.

Rink 6  Maggie O’Sullivan  Jan Allum  Jo Ellis  won 21 - 14

Reigate Priory held a 1 shot advantage, 9 - 8 after 10 ends, but Epsom had an excellent second half to win by 7 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 51  Reigate Priory 41

This start time of this match was delayed so that some of the Ladies could attend the Service in memory of Peggy Shuttleworth.  Both Captains agreed to the delay. The family of Peggy sent their thanks to Reigate Priory for agreeing to this.

After the match an excellent sandwich & cake tea was served.  This was prepared, served and washed up by a Reigate Priory gentleman.

 

Surrey v Warwickshire

Pat Buckley was presented with his Surrey County Badge at Welford Upon Avon Bowling Club on Tuesday 17th May 2011.  He was also presented with his Surrey tie on the way to the game.  Pat was joined by David Sowdon, Peter Miller, Les Owen, George Sperring & Martin Harbottle at this game.

Surrey won the match 142 - 112.

Ladies Friendly v Malden Manor

The Ladies played Malden Manor on Tuesday 17th May 2011 and won on 1 rink & lost the other 2.  They played 18 ends.

Details:

Rink 3  Sue Needham  Dolly Snow  Maureen Trumble Jo Ellis  lost 11 - 14

The first half of this game belonged to Malden Manor when they led 12 - 5 after 10 ends, however Epsom had a better half, but not quite force a win.

Rink 4  Ann Bailey  Sue Townsend  Lyz Warren  Sylvia Pearce  lost 14 - 19

Epsom led 11 - 7 after 10 ends, but Malden Manor came back strongly in the second half outscoring Epsom to win by 5 shots.

Rink 5  Audrey Jones  Diana Taylor  Maureen Morris  Jan Allum  won 16 - 11

This was a very close game up to 10 ends when the scores were level 7 - 7.  Epsom had an excellent second half and won by 5 shots.

Bowls England Two Fours

Epsom had an excellent win in the Bowls England Two Fours at Chipstead on Monday 16th May 2011.  They won on both rinks.

Details:

Rink 2  Stefan Tomm  Ron Mew  David Sowdon  Peter Miller  won 18 - 17

Epsom got off to a slow start on this rink, but went ahead 13 - 9 after 14 ends.  Chipstead fought back well to take the lead, 14 - 16 on the 19th end.  Epsom scored a 4 on the 20th end to get back the lead and held on to win by just the 1 shot.

Rink 3  Brian Kenyon  Les Owen  Pat Buckley  Graham Naish  won 26 - 11

Epsom got off to a great start on this rink and dominated play for 11 ends going into a 20 - 1 lead.  Chipstead played well on ends on 15 - 19, but Epsom finished strongly scoring a 4 on end 20 & 1 shot on the last end to win comfortably by 15 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 44  Chipstead 28

 

Mixed Friendly

Epsom played their very first Mixed game of the season on Sunday 15th May 2011 against The Insurance B.A. & lost on 3 rinks and won 1.

Details:

Rink 1  Derek Jones  Tessa Hurworth  Len Philpott  Eileen Mills  lost 8 - 29

This rink struggled all afternoon and was 2 - 18 down after10 ends.  They scored 6 more shots in the game losing by 21 shots.

Rink 2  Ruth Nixon  Sue Needham  Alan Wybrow  Lyz Warren  lost 13 - 20

After 13 ends Epsom was down 10 - 11, but had a poor last 8 ends to eventually lose by 7 shots.

Rink 3  Audrey Jones  Eddie Needham  Anne Hoffmann  John Warren  lost 17 - 19

This was a very close game throughout.  After 13 ends the scores were level 12 - 12.  On the 20th end Epsom scored 3 shots to be just 1 behind.  They failed to score on the final end & finally lost by just 2 shots.

Rink 4  Sandra Huxford  Pauline Devereaux  Geoff Purrott  Eric Brown  won 19 - 15*

After 11 ends the scores were level, 8 - 8, and from then on the game was very even.  Epsom scored 5 shots to The Insurance's 2 shots over the last 5 ends which secured the win by 4 shots.

Bowls England Double Fours

Epsom Men travel to Chipstead to play in the first round of the above competition on Monday 16th May 2011.

East Surrey League

Epsom played their very first League match of the season against Warlingham Park on Saturday 14th May 2011.  This turned out to be an excellent start to the season with Epsom winning on all rinks.  Epsom have beaten Warlingham Park in each game ever since they joined the League in 2008.  This year was the first 6 - 0 win and included the highest shot difference win (51 shots) plus the highest rink winning margin (31 - 10) in the 4 matches played.  All these facts and others relating to the East Surrey League can be viewed on this Web Site by going to 'Associations' then 'East Surrey League'.

Details:

Rink 3  John Hart  Cyril Newman  George Sperring  Graham Naish   won  22 - 15

This was an extremely close game right up to the 16th end when the scores were tied 11 - 11.  Epsom then scored 11 shots over the next 4 ends to take a 22 - 11 lead.  They finished up winning by 7 shots.

Rink 4  Bill Lawrence  Geoff Purrott  Martin Harbottle  Peter Miller  won 18 - 15

As with rink 3 this was also a close game until the 15th end when Epsom was 9 - 12 down.  On ends 16 to 19 they scored a single shot on each end to go in front 13 - 12.  However, Warlingham Park scored 3 shots on end 20 to go ahead once more.  Needing 2 to tie and 3 to win the rink on the last end Epsom did better than this and scored 5 shots to win an excellent game of bowls by 2 shots.

Rink 5  Brian Kenyon  John Warren  Pat Buckley  Les Owen  won 31 - 10*

Epsom dominated play on this rink all afternoon.  After 10 ends they led 16 - 3, and went further ahead 20 - 7 after 15 ends.  They eventually won comfortably by 21 shots.

Rink 6  Stefan Tomm  Len Philpott  Ron Mew  David Sowdon  won 28 - 8

This rink also dominated play throughout the afternoon.  They also led 16 - 3 after 10 ends and finished strongly to win by 20 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 99  Warlingham Park  48    Epsom 6 points  Warlingham Park 0 points

Men's Handicap Singles

The Men's Handicap Singles postponed from 2010, because of illness to one of the players, was played on Monday evening 9th May 2011.  This was between Cyril Newman & Fred Read.

The game was quite close for the first 12 ends when Cyril held a 2 shot advantage, 11 - 9.  He then scored 8 shots over the next 4 ends to take the lead 19 - 10.  Fred did not recover from this and finally lost 23 - 13.

 

Note from the President Maureen Trumble

Fred Read has asked me to convey to the Club his grateful thanks for allowing him to play his Handicap Singles final against Cyril Newman.  Owing to ill health he was not available on Finals Day last year and Cyril was in agreement to wait.

Monday evening, 9th May, was a warm evening and it was a joy to sit watching again.  Well done both of you.

Maureen Trumble (Epsom Bowling Club President)

 

Ladies'  Top 10

The Ladies played against Purley on Saturday 7th May 2011 in the Bowls England Top 10 and won the Singles, but were beaten heavily in the Pairs, & Fours.  The Triples was a much closer game.

Details:

Singles:  Maggie O'Sullivan won 21 - 16

Maggie took the lead after 15 ends, 13 - 10 & held on to win by 5 shots.

Pairs:  Tessa Hurworth  Sandra Huxford  lost 8 - 35

Epsom played a very experienced pair from Purley and were outplayed throughout this game.

Triples:  Lyz Warren  Maureen Morris  Jo Ellis  lost 13 - 19

After 10 ends Epsom was ahead 11- 7, but they dropped a total of 11 shots on the next 6 ends to lose the lead.  This proved to be the deciding factor in the game and the Triple lost by 6 shots.

Fours:  Audrey Jones  Maureen Trumble  Eileen Mills Gill Sperring  lost 10 - 26

As with the Pairs Epsom was outplayed in this game.  After 15 ends they were 9 - 22 down and conceded on the 17th end.

Final Score:  Epsom 1  Purley 3
