Bowls England Top Club (Top 11)

Once again Epsom Men lose narrowly to Old Coulsdon in an outside competition.  Epsom won the Two Wood Singles & Pairs, lost the Four Wood Singles, narrowly lost the Triples and were well beaten in the Fours.

Four Wood Singles:

Once again Graham Pilbrow represented the Club.  He got off to a slow start, but came back well.  However, his opponent, Andrew Barclay, after winning an end gave the jack away and this proved to be the deciding factor in the game.  Andrew played some excellent last bowls on several ends when Graham was lying shot and went on to beat Graham 21 - 11.

Two Wood Singles:

For the first time in outside competitions David Sowdon represented the Club in the Two Wood.  He had an excellent game and held the lead right up to the 17th end when his opponent, Peter Sarratt, drew level 11 - 11.  However, David continued to play exceptionally well and won 15 - 12 after 21 ends.

Pairs:

The pairing of Martin Harbottle and Peter Miller also had an excellent evening.  Martin and Peter have represented the Club many times together over the years, but this game must go down as one of their best wins.

They were always in control, and although leading by just 1 shot after 11 ends they went on to win comfortably 22 - 11.

Triples:

The triple of Brian Kenyon, Terry Hoye and Ron Mew played a very strong Old Coulsdon side.  They held their own throughout the game and on 16 ends were 11 - 11.  The last two ends proved to be very tense and it was only the Old Coulsdon skip that turned the game in their favour.  The triple finally losing by just 2 shots.  A great effort.

Fours:

Unfortunately the four of Bill Lawrence, John Hart, Pat Buckley and Graham Naish had a very difficult game.  They did, however, give themselves a chance on the 14th end when they scored 4 shots, then a 2 on the 16th end to be just 4 shots behind.  The last few ends Epsom were outplayed and they dropped a total of 11 shots to lose 15 - 29.

So once again Epsom lose to Old Coulsdon, this time 3 - 2.
