West Surrey League

Epsom played at home against Chessington on Friday 12th July 2024. They won 27 - 15.

Details:

Rink  Sandy Cooper Mick Cooper Keith Roberts Wayne Thornton won 27 - 15

Epsom led 21 - 1 after 7 ends & 25 - 11 on end 15.  They won by 12 shots (2 - 0).

 

Past Times - Ladies

Epsom played against Reigate Priory on Friday 12th July 2024. They lost at home, won away & won overall 32 - 26.

Details:

Home: Penny Payne Liz Hind Ruth Baker Trish Southgate  lost 12 - 14

Epsom were 2 - 11 down after 9 ends, but won the next 4 ends to be 9 - 11 behind. Going into the last end they were just 1 shot behind, but dropped 1 shot to lose by 2.

Away: Sandy Cooper Frances Suttonwood Christine Summerfield Annette Jordan  won 20 - 12

Epsom led 8 - 4 after 9 ends & 13 - 12 on end 14.  They won the last 4 ends to win by 8 shots.

Past Times Ladies

The first recorded match for the ladies was in 1999.  Since then they have played 39 matches, won 22 & lost 18.  In the early years Epsom entered 2 teams, but only 1 from 2008.  Epsom did not enter a team between 2016 & 2022.

Frances Suttonwood & Annette Jordan played in their first game in this Competition.

 

Crawford Cup

Epsom were well represented by Epsom Bowling Club in the Annual match between SCIBA v SCBA. (They are highlighted in GREEN below). Also a huge thanks to Ray Evans who turned up as a reserve & stayed for the whole afternoon.

Surrey County Indoor Bowling Association

Result of Crawford Cup match v SCBA on Thursday 11th July 2024 played at Chipstead B C

Surrey County Indoor Bowling Association played against SCBA and won on 4 rinks, lost on 2 rinks & won the match 120 99 (6 2). SCIBA were 46 54 down across the 6 rinks after 10 ends, but led by 15 shots (101 86) after 18 ends.  They won by 21 shots.

Rules & Scoring:

Cecil Crawford presented a Trophy (Cecil Crawford Bowl) to be played for between the Executive Members of the Surrey County Bowling Association and the Executive Members of the Surrey County Indoor Bowling Association. It is intended to be a Fun game to promote the good spirit of Bowls between the Associations. The games to be played Twice Yearly, one Indoors and one outdoors the first to be played Outdoors in July of the year.  The Trophy to be presented at the Annual Surrey County Dinner. A system of points score to decide the Winner 1 Point for a Winning Rink and 2 Points for winning the Match.  The total Points over the two games will be 16. One player can only play for one team during the year the first match outdoors the second indoors. These Guidelines were discussed and put together by Cecil Crawford, Harry Braun and Jim Green in September 1996.

Vilamoura Mixed League

Epsom played against Sutton on Wednesday 10th July 2024. They won at home & away winning 35 - 25 (6 - 0).

Details:

Home: Lynn Phillips Penny Payne Fred Read  won 15 - 14

Epsom were 2 - 13 down after 9 ends, but won the next 7 ends to draw level 13 - 13. They went into the last end 13 - 14 down, but scored 2 shots to win by 1.

Away: Barry Coe Trish Southgate Mary Green  won 20 - 11

Epsom led 13 - 4 after 9 ends & 19 - 8 on end 15.  They won by 9 shots.

Epsom played against Chipstead on Tuesday 2nd July 2024. They won at home & away winning by 49 - 22 (6 - 0).

After 10 ends Epsom were 6 - 9 down.  However, they won all the remaining ends to win by 16 shots.

Away: Liz Hind Frank Thompson Phil Sims  won 24 - 13

Epsom led 11 - 7 after 9 ends & 24 - 7 on end 15.  They lost the last 3 ends, but won by 11 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 49  Chipstead 22  Epsom 6 points  Chipstead 0 points.

Sutton & District Bowling Association - Arthur Hughes Triples

Epsom played against Surbiton Royal British Legion on Tuesday 2nd July 2024 at home. They lost 16 - 17.

Epsom led 12 - 1 after 7 ends & 16 -7 on end 13.  They lost the last 5 ends to lose by 1 shot.

Did you know

The winners of this Competition receive a silver plated cup first presented in 1983.  Arthur Hughes joined Cuddington B.C. in 1975.  He is thought to have worked for some years in Government Service in South Africa.  He was captain of Cuddington in 1980.  He was elected President of Sutton & District Bowling Association in 1982, but he sadly died in December of the same year.  The cup was presented by his widow who, it is believed moved to the Isle of Wight.

Bill Lawrence, Bill Sandford & George Sperring reached the Semi Finals in 2004.

Epsom won this trophy for the first time in 2021. (Dave Pearce, David Bragg & Fred Read).

 

Chrystie League

Epsom played their fifth Chrystie league game of the season on Monday 1st July 2024 at home against Pippbrook. They won on both rinks & the match 41 - 21 (4 - 0). Epsom were 12 - 13 down after 9 ends, but led 29 - 18 on ends 15.  They outscored Pippbrook 12 - 3 over the last 3 ends to win by 20 shots.  Epsom have now won their first 5 games of the season.  The last time this happened was in 2018. (In 2004 Epsom were unbeaten in this league). Last season Epsom lost to Pippbrook at home & away.
