East Surrey League - Men Epsom men played away against Cheam Fields on Saturday 29th July 2023. They won on 1 rink, lost on 2 rinks & lost overall 52 - 65 (2 - 8). After 10 ends across the 3 rinks Epsom led 33 - 24 & still led 43 - 37 after 15 ends. This game was lost over the last 6 ends when Epsom were outscored 11 shots to 28. They lost by 13 shots. Details: Rink 1 Keith Roberts Bob Blaker John Warren Les Owen lost 14 - 23 The scores were level 11 - 11 after 12 ends, but Epsom led 14 - 11 on end 14. However, they lost all the remaining ends to lose by 9 shots. Rink 2 David Bragg Mick Cooper Wayne Thornton Jim Scott lost 13 - 26 The scores were level 8 - 8 after 10 ends, but Epsom were 13 - 15 down on end 16. They lost the last 5 ends to lose by 13 shots. Sutton & District Bowling Association Epsom men played at home against Epsom Park on Tuesday 25th July 2023 in the Yonwin Cup. They won on 1 rink, drew on 1 rink, lost on the third & won overall 60 - 56. Epsom led 33 - 24 after 10 ends across the 3 rinks, but were 43 - 44 down after 15 ends. They won by 4 shots. Details: Rink 1 Keith Roberts Bob Blaker John Warren David Fearn lost 19 - 23 Epsom were 6 - 10 down after 10 ends & 12 - 18 behind on end 15. They lost by 4 shots. Rink 2 Ted Ray Mick Cooper David Bragg Wayne Thornton drew 18 - 18 Epsom were 9 - 10 down after 10 ends, but the scores were level 16 - 16 on end 17. Epsom won the last 2 ends to tie the rink. Rink 3 John Hart Phil Sims Peter Miller Les Owen won 23 - 15 Epsom led 18 - 4 after 10 ends & 19 - 10 after 15 ends. They won by 8 shots. Final Score: Epsom 60 Epsom Park 56 Did you know The Yonwin Cup is controlled by Sutton & District Bowling Association. This Association was formed in 1949 and the Yonwin Cup started in 1950. Epsom Bowling Club affiliated to the Association in 1976 and has competed every year since. Epsom lost in the second round in 1976 & they have won the trophy 7 times. Epsom have played Epsom Park 3 times in the past & won all 3 games. (Semi Final in 1982, 3rd round in 1987 & 2nd round in 1990) You can read more on the history of the Yonwin Cup by going to ‘Associations’ – ‘Sutton and District’. Since 1976 Epsom have played 120 matches, won 86 & lost 34 in the Yonwin Cup. Mick Cooper played in his first game in this Competition. |

Chrystie League Epsom men played away against Esher on Monday 24th July 2023. They won on 1 rink, lost on the second & won overall 35 - 22 (3 - 1). Details: Rink 1 Paul Maskell Mick Cooper Frank Thompson Fred Read lost 11 - 15 Epsom led 10 - 5 after 11 ends, but lost 6 of the last 7 ends to lose by 4 shots. Rink 2 John Wellard John Savill John Hart David Fearn won 24 - 7 Epsom led 8 - 4 after 9 ends & 15 - 7 after 14 ends. They won the last 4 ends to win by 17 shots. Final Score: Epsom 35 Esher 22 Epsom 3 points Esher 1 point. Did you know Epsom have played Esher 42 times, won 24, lost 10 & there has been 1 drawn game. |

Past Times - Men Epsom men played Bookham on Sunday 23rd July 2023. They won at home & away winning 50 - 26. Details: Home: Ted Ray Phil Sims David Fearn Martin Harbottle won 27 - 12 Epsom led 11 - 6 after 10 ends & 19 - 8 on end 15. They won by 15 shots. Away: Stefan Tomm David Bragg John Warren Les Owen won 23 - 14 Epsom led 10 - 6 after 10 ends & 19 - 8 after 15 ends. They won by 9 shots. Final Score: Epsom 50 Bookham 26 Did you know This Competition was originally called The Times Herald Competition & was entered by Epsom between 1966 - 2001. This Competition was ended in 2001 and replaced with the Past Times Competition in 2002. The Competition is played as follows:- Each Club enters two rinks and one rink plays at home the other away. The winner is decided on the total shots scored. The Challengers (i.e. the home team) will play an extra end should the scores be level at the end of normal play to decide the winner. Epsom Bowling Club won the Times Herald in 1975 and have lost in the Final of the Times Herald on three occasions (1980, 1990 & 1997). They reached the Final of the Past Times Competition in 2010. David Fearn & Phil Sims played in their very first game in this Competition. |

Rink 5 John Lystor John Warren Peter Miller Jim Scott won 21 - 18 Epsom led 10 - 9 after 10 ends, but were 13 - 16 behind after 15 ends. However, they won the next 5 ends to lead 21 - 16. They won by 3 shots. Rink 6 David Fearn Ted Ray Wayne Thornton Martin Harbottle won 25 - 17 Epsom led 18 - 8 after 13 ends, but lost the next 4 ends to be just 1 shot ahead - 18 - 17. They won the last 4 ends to win by 8 shots. Final Score: Epsom 58 Ashtead 61 Epsom 4 points Ashtead 6 points. Did you know Epsom have played Ashtead in this league 33 times, won 25, lost 6, drawn 2. Epsom drew the match at Ashtead earlier in the season, but lost on points. |

Vilamoura Mixed League Epsom played against Purley on Thursday 20th July 2023. They lost at home, drew away & lost overall 27 - 34 (1 - 5). Details: Home: Liz Hind Barry Coe Brian Collis lost 13 - 20 After 9 ends Epsom were 5 - 9 down & 8 - 15 behind on end 14. They lost by 7 shots. Away: Penny Payne Paul Maskell Fred Read dew 14 - 14 Epsom led 10 - 1 after 6 ends, but lost the next 5 ends but still led 10 - 8. Going into the last end Epsom were 13 - 14 down, but scored 1 shot to tie the rink. Final Score: Epsom 27 Purley 34 Epsom 1 point Purley 5 points. Did you know Epsom have played Purley 6 times, won 5 & lost 1. |

Ladies Friendly v Dorking Epsom played at home against Dorking on Thursday 20th July 2023. They won on both rinks & the match 36 - 28. Details: Rink 3 Sue Carter Sandy Cooper Ruth Baker won 18 - 17 Epsom were 9 - 7 ahead after 9 ends & 16 - 9 after 13 ends. However, they lost the next 4 ends to go 16 - 17 down. On the last ends Epsom were 4 shots down, but Ruth, with the very last bowl, trailed the jack back to 2 Epsom bowls to win by 1 shot. Rink 4 Audrey Jones Lynn Phillips Christine Summerfield won 18 - 11 Epsom led 9 - 6 after 9 ends & 17 - 8 after 15 ends. They won by 7 shots. Final Score: Epsom 36 Dorking 28 Did you know The first recorded ladies friendly match against Dorking was in 2007. Since then the Clubs have met 12 times, won 6, lost 6 & 4 games have been cancelled. Lynn Phillips played in her first friendly ladies match for Epsom Bowling Club. |

Mixed Friendly match v Brockham Epsom played at home against Brockham on Wednesday 19th July 2023 in their second mixed friendly game of the season. (2 other mixed games had been cancelled). This was a 4 rink Triples match. Epsom won on 3 rinks, lost on 1 rink & won overall 89 - 64. After 9 ends across the 3 rinks Epsom led 51 - 20 & went on to win by 25 shots. Details: Rink 1 Penny Payne Lynn Phillips Mick Cooper won 29 - 13 After 9 ends Epsom led 16 - 5 & won 5 of the last 6 ends to win by 16 shots. Rink 2 Richard Price John Wellard Mary Green won 23 - 16 Epsom led 6 - 4 after 5 ends & then won the next 6 ends to go 19 - 4 ahead. They won by 7 shots. Rink 3 Paul Maskell Liz Hind Trish Southgate lost 18 - 20 The scores were level 8 - 8 after 9 ends, but Epsom were 13 - 15 behind on end 15. They lost by 2 shots. Rink 4 Robert York Karen Wellard Frank Thompson won 19 - 15 Epsom led 15 - 3 after 9 ends & 18 - 10 after 14 ends. They won by 4 shots. East Surrey League - Mid Week Triples Epsom men played at home against Cheam Fields on Tuesday 18th July 2023 to play their fourth match in this league. They lost on all 3 rinks & lost 43 - 56 (0 - 10). After 9 ends across the 3 rinks Epsom were 20 - 29 down. However, they led 38 - 36 after 13 ends. They lost the match over the last 3 ends when they were outscored 1 - 13 by Cheam Fields. Details: Rink 1 Geoff Purrott Phil Sims David Fearn lost 17 - 20 Epsom led 12 - 10 after 10 ends, but went behind 16 - 17 on end 15. They drew level 17 - 17 going into the last end, but dropped 3 shots. Rink 2 Richard Price Mick Cooper Keith Roberts lost 15 - 19 Epsom were 4 - 14 down after 9 ends, but won the next 5 ends to go 15 - 14 ahead. They lost the last 4 ends to lose by 4 shots. Rink 3 Paul Maskell Frank Thompson John Hart lost 11 - 17 The scores were level 5 - 5 on end 9, but Epsom went ahead 11 - 8 on end 14. However, they also lost the last 4 ends to lose by 6 shots. Chrystie League Epsom men played at home against Brockham on Monday 17th July 2023. They won on both rinks winning 55 - 19 (4 - 0). This was a record win against Brockham winning by 36 shots. Details: Rink 2 Paul Maskell John Wellard Frank Thompson Fred Read won 29 - 4 Epsom won 14 of the 18 ends & led 15 - 2 after 9 ends. They won by 25 shots. Rink 3 Brian Kenyon Richard Price Mick Cooper David Fearn won 26 - 15 Epsom led 16 - 7 after 9 ends & won by 11 shots. Final Score: Epsom 55 Brockham 19 Epsom 4 points Brockham 0 points Did you know Epsom have played Brockham 42 times, won 27, lost 14 & there has been 1 game drawn. Earlier this season Epsom beat Brockham away on both rinks & won 40 - 27 (4 - 0). |

Going into the last end Epsom were 15 - 20 down, but scored 3 shots to lose by 2. Rink 3 Stefan Tomm Bob Blaker Wayne Thornton Les Owen won 15 - 14 Epsom led 8 - 7 after 10 ends & 11 - 9 after 15 ends. They lost the last 3 ends, but won by just 1 shot. Rink 4 Ted Ray John Wellard Keith Roberts Martin Harbottle lost 13 - 20 The scores were level 9 - 9 after 10 ends, but were 10 - 14 down on end 15. They lost by 7 shots. Final Score: Epsom 46 Redhill 54 Epsom 2 points Redhill 8 points Did you know Epsom have played Redhill 4 times in this league. They have won 1 & lost 3. Redhill were one of the original Clubs in 1987, but withdrew after 2 seasons. They rejoined the league this season. Epsom won the game at home earlier this season 66 – 44 (8 – 2). |

The game was played for a short while in very poor conditions. Epsom conceded after being behind on all rinks. Details: Rink 4 Stefan Tomm Frank Thompson David Fearn lost 13 - 17 Epsom were 3 - 5 down after 4 ends & lost the next 5 ends to go further behind 3 - 12. They picked up 2 3's on ends 17 & 18 to lose by 4 shots. Rink 5 Richard Price Bob Blaker John Hart lost 13 - 15 Epsom led 11 - 6 after 10 ends, but lost the next 4 ends to go 11 - 13 down. They lost by 2 shots. Rink 6 Keith Roberts Mick Cooper Les Owen lost 14 - 15 The scores were level 8 - 8 after 10 ends, but Epsom were 10 - 14 down on end 15. The scores were level once again going into the last end, but Epsom lost by 1 shot with the very last Purley Bury bowl. Rink 2 Paul Maskell John Wellard Frank Thompson Fred Read won 19 - 16 Epsom led 10 - 4 after 9 ends, but were 13 - 15 down after 15 ends. They won 2 of the last 3 ends to win by 2 shots. Final Score: Epsom 30 Pippbrook 32 Epsom 1 point Pippbrook 3 points Did you know Epsom lost on both rinks in the home game against Pippbrook earlier in the season. Epsom were behind all afternoon right up to the 18th end. They were 36 - 44 behind across the 3 rinks after 15 ends & 5 shots behind (47 - 52) after 18 ends. They outscored Caterham 9 - 3 over the last 3 ends to win by just 1 shot. Details: Rink 1 Keith Roberts John Warren Peter Miller Jim Scott won 23 - 15 Epsom led 11 - 6 after 10 ends, but went behind 12 - 13 on end 14. They regained the lead on the next end with a count of 6. This rink was last to finish & going into the last end the scores overall were level 55 - 55. They scored 1 shot to secure a match win. Rink 2 Stefan Tomm Bob Blaker Les Owen Martin Harbottle won 25 - 16 Epsom led 10 - 6 after 9 ends, but lost the next 4 ends to go 10 - 14 down. They won 7 of the remaining 8 ends to win by 9 shots. Rink 4 Ted Ray John Savill Wayne Thornton David Fearn lost 8 - 24 Epsom were 4 - 15 down after 10 ends & only scored on 3 more ends to lose by 16 shots. Final Score: Epsom 56 Caterham 55 Epsom 8 points Caterham 2 points Did you know Caterham was founded in 1911 as the Queens Park Bowling Club & was for men only – ‘an old man’s game’. Original members paid a green fee of 1d, non members 3d. There were four courts (rinks) - one to be reserved for public use. In 1911 the green, 140ft by 85ft in size, was sabotaged, in the still of the night, by an evil-disposed gentleman with pick and shovel, and had to be re-laid in 1912, with 600 turfs presented by a local councillor. The club was re-named Caterham Bowling Club. Epsom have played Caterham in this league 30 times, won 19, lost 9, drawn 1 & 1 game was abandoned. John Savill played his very first match in the East Surrey league & becomes the 166th member to play in this league. |

Ladies Past Times Epsom ladies played Bookham on Sunday 9th July 2023 in the Past Times Competition. They won on 1 rink, lost on 1 rinks & with the scores tied Epsom lost on the extra end. Details: Home: Sandy Cooper Liz Hind Christine Summerfield Ruth Baker won 20 - 12 Epsom were 6 - 11 down on end 11, but won the next 7 ends to go ahead 18 - 11. They won by 8 shots. The match went to an extra end & this end played, but Epsom lost by 1 shot. Away: Penny Payne Mary Green Fi Drinkall Trish Southgate lost 14 - 22 Epsom were level 9 - 9 after 11 ends & were 13 - 14 down on end 16. They lost 4 of the last 5 ends to lose by 8 shots. Final Score: Epsom 34 Bookham 34 - Bookham won the extra end. Did you know This Competition was originally called The Times Herald Competition & ran from 1966 to 2001. It was then replaced with the Past Times Competition. Epsom ladies first entered this Competition in 1999 (1999 – 2001 – Times Herald). They entered teams up to 2015. In 2012 they reached the final after beating Leatherhead, Malden Manor & Bookham. They lost in the final to Purley Bury 32 – 49. Of our current members Audrey Jones, Anne Hoffmann, Eileen Mills, Gill Sperring, Sandra Huxford & Marilyn Hoye (nee Walsh) played in this final. The only other success was reaching the quarter final in 2006 & 2007. There have been 43 ladies who have played in this competition with all except Ruth Baker playing in their first match against Bookham. (Ruth made her debut in 2014 leading against Old Coulsdon). Epsom ladies have played 39 matches in this Competition, won 21 & lost 18. |

After 9 ends across the three rinks Epsom were 15 - 34 down, but fought back well to lose by 6 shots. Details: Rink 2 Paul Maskell Mick Cooper David Fearn won 24 - 16 Epsom were 7 - 13 down after 10 ends, but won the next 4 ends to go ahead 20 - 13. They won by 8 shots. Rink 3 John Wellard Bob Blaker Brian Collis lost 12 - 15 Epsom were 5 - 14 down after 11 ends, but won the next 6 ends to close the gap to 12 - 14. They lost by 3 shots. Rink 4 Keith Roberts John Lystor Phil Sims lost 11 - 22 Epsom were 3 - 14 down after 8 ends & 8 - 20 behind after 15 ends. They lost by 11 shots. Final Score: Epsom 47 Chipstead 53 Epsom 2 points Chipstead 8 points Did you know Last season Epsom lost to Chipstead 50 – 51 (2 – 8.) |

Bowls England - Mixed Fours Area Final Epsom played against Southey in the Area Final of the Bowls England Mixed Fours on Wednesday 5th July 2023. This was the first time that an Epsom Mixed Four had reached this stage in this Competition. They lost by 3 shots, 18 - 21. Rink 3 Ted Ray Mary Green Fi Drinkall David Fearn lost 18 - 21 This was a tremendous performance against last years National Champions. Epsom found themselves 8 - 17 down after 11 ends & 9 - 20 behind on end 13. However, they won the next 4 ends to be just 2 shots behind going into the last end. They dropped 1 shot to lose by 3. Congratulations from us all at Epsom Bowling for an excellent effort. |

Details: Home: Audrey Jones John Lystor Brian Collis drew 13 - 13 The scores were level 9 - 9 after 12 ends & ended up as a draw. Away: Penny Payne Paul Maskell Fred Read won 16 - 15 Epsom led 9 - 6 after 9 ends & 14 - 8 after 13 ends. However, they lost the next 4 ends to go 14 - 15 down. After 12 ends across the 2 rinks Epsom were 20 - 21 down, but were ahead 24 - 22 after 14 ends. The scores ended up level. This was the first game in this league that the game has been drawn. After 10 ends across the 3 rinks Epsom led 34 - 31, but they lost by 32 shots.
