East Surrey League - Men

Epsom played at home against Horley on Saturday 30th July 2022 and won on 1 rink, lost on 2 rinks & drew overall 51 - 51 (4 - 6).  After 10 ends across the 3 rinks Epsom led 30 - 21, but were 42 - 49 down after 18 ends.  They outscored Horley 9 - 2 over the last 3 ends to tie the scores.

The scores were level 8 - 8 after 13 ends, but Epsom went behind 12 - 14 on end 18.  They lost by 1 shot.

The scores were also level 8 - 8 on this rink on end 12, but they went behind 12 - 13 on end 18.  They won the last 3 ends to win by 3 shots.

Epsom led 14 - 8 after 9 ends, but lost the next 5 ends to go 14 - 19 down.  They won the last 2 ends to help secure the match draw, but lost by 2 shots on the rink.

Did you know

Epsom have won 7 of the last games, and lost 3 against Horley.  In this League Epsom have played Horley 34 times, won 20, lost 12 & there has been 1 draw. Earlier this season at Horley Epsom lost 50 - 66.

Epsom have played 442 matches in this League & there have only been 5 drawn games (all 4 rink matches).

They were in 1988 v Old Coulsdon, 67 - 67, in 1989 v Chipstead, 83 - 83, in 1991 v Caterham, 75 - 75, in 2008 v Cheam Fields, 76 - 76 & v Ashtead in 2009, 84 - 84.

 

Sutton & District Bowling Association - Yonwin Cup

Epsom travelled the short distance to play Sutton in the Yonwin Cup on Thursday 28th July 2022.  They won on 2 rinks, lost on 1 rink & lost overall 63 - 68.  After 10 ends across the 3 rinks Epsom led 36 - 27 & after 18 ends they led by 7 shots.  However, they were outscored 7 - 19 over the last 3 ends to lose by 5 shots.

Epsom led 13 - 10 after 10 ends & 18 - 13 after 15 ends.  They won by 4 shots.

Rink 6  Stefan Tomm Phil Sims John Hart Peter Miller  lost 9 - 34

Epsom were 8 - 11 down after 11 ends & lost the next 5 ends to go further behind 8 - 19.  They dropped 15 shots over the last 4 ends to lose by 25 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 63  Sutton 68

Did you know

The Yonwin Cup was formed in 1949 & started in 1950.  Epsom Bowling Club affiliated in 1976 & have played in every year since (except 2020 & 2021 - COVID Years).

Epsom have won the Yonwin Cup on 7 occasions & lost in 5 finals.

Since 1976 Epsom have played 120 matches, won 85 & lost 35.

Epsom have played Sutton 5 times in all these years & have won 4 & lost 4.

Graham Pilbrow holds the record for the number of appearances - 75.  He was a winner on 5 occasions.

David Fearn & Wayne Thornton played in their very first Yonwin Cup match.

 

Ladies' Friendly

Epsom Ladies travelled to Dorking to play in a friendly match on Thursday 28th July 2022.  They won on 1 rink, lost on 1 rink & won overall 36 - 23.

After 2 ends Epsom were 0 - 2 down, but won the next 11 ends to go 18 - 2 ahead.  They won by 16 shots.

The scores were level 7 - 7 after 8 ends, but Epsom were 11 - 14 down on end 15.  They lost by 3 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 36  Dorking 23

 

Sutton & District Bowling Association - Carol Shannon Triples

The Carol Shannon Triples was introduced in 2021.  This is the equivalent Competition to the Men's Arthur Hughes Triples.  Epsom reached the final in 2021 losing narrowly.

This season the same ladies Trish Southgate, Ruth Baker & Mary Green have so far played 2 matches.

In the first round they beat Carshalton 26 - 2 & overcame a very strong Wallington Triple 18 - 16 in the second round.  Epsom now play the winners of Supreme & Epsom Park

 

Chrystie League

Epsom played at home against Brockham on Monday 25th July 2022 and won on both rinks.  They won 46 - 26 (4 - 0).

Brockham only had 3 players for 11 ends when Epsom led 16 - 8.  However, when their missing player turned up Epsom lost 5 of the remaining ends.  Going into the last end the scores were level 19 - 19, but Epsom scored 1 shot to win.

The scores were level 6 - 6 after 9 ends, but Epsom won 8 of the remaining ends to win by 19 shots.

Paul Maskell played in his very first Chrystie League match in this game. He becomes the 80th member of Epsom Bowling Club to play in this League.

Did you know

Epsom have played Brockham 40 times in this league & won 25, lost 14 & drawn 1.  2 games have been cancelled.

The scores were level 9 - 9 after 10 ends, but Epsom were outscored 4 - 8 over the rest of the game to lose by 4 shots.

Did you know

Epsom first played Merton Park in a friendly match in 2016.  There have been 5 games since & Epsom have won 3 & lost 2.

The game in 2018 was cancelled.

 

Vilamoura

Epsom played against Carshalton on Friday 22nd July 2022 and won away, lost at home & won overall 36 - 28 (4 - 2).

Vilamoura

Epsom played against Purley on Thursday 21st July 2022 and won home & away. They won 42 - 26 (6 - 0).

Maureen Trumble

Maureen was born in Clapham in 1930 and moved to Cheam at the age of 2.  She worked on 3 monthly magazines in Fleet Street including features on Fashion & Films. Sadly Maureen's first husband died at the early age of 41. After meeting & marrying Percy (also a member of EBC) she moved to Epsom & they both joined Epsom Bowling Club in 1986. Maureen played tennis, rowed every weekend with the Sea Rangers & entered Regattas.  She also ran a Netball team.  Maureen organised plays & parties for the Sea Rangers & played Badminton for 40 years.  She was Ladies' Secretary in 1998.  She was Captain in 1995 & 1996.  Maureen was an Honorary Club Vice President and a Club Coach & had served on the Committee in 1991 for several years..  Maureen was Ladies' Chairman from October 1997 until January 1998.

Maureen's talents had come very much to the fore with her involvement with the popular Club Pantomime, which was a feature of the Annual Christmas Party for many years.  She became the Club Senior Vice President in 2008.  Maureen became the second lady President of Epsom Bowling Club in 2010.

Maureen was a member of the squad that won the East Surrey League in 2005 & 2006. She decided not to bowl in 2016. She left the Club a few years ago.

Sadly Maureen passed away in July 2022.

Mixed Friendly

Epsom played against Ashtead on Sunday 17th July 2022 and won on 2 rinks, lost on 1 rink & won overall 45 - 28.

The game was reduced to 15 ends because of the heat.  Elaine Coe, Paul Maskell & Barry Coe played in their first Mixed Friendly match for Epsom Bowling Club.

East Surrey League - Men

Epsom played against Sutton on Saturday 16th July 2022 and won on 2 rinks, lost on 1 rink & won overall 59 - 48 (8 - 2)This was Epsom's second win this season. Epsom lost earlier away at Sutton so this was a much needed win.  After 10 ends across the 3 rinks Epsom led 35 - 19 & 54 - 41 after 18 ends.  They won by 11 shots.

John Lystor played in his very first ESL match becoming the 166th member of the Club to play in this league.

Many thanks to Terry Berry who kept the Webmaster up to date all afternoon whilst in Rome.  It was very much appreciated.

Epsom played against Sutton on Wednesday 13th July 2022 and won away, lost at home & won overall 34 - 31 (4 - 2).

After 9 ends Epsom were 4 - 12 down & 8 - 14 behind after 14 ends.  They lost by 14 shots.

Away: Penny Payne David Fearn Fred Read won 25 - 8

Epsom led all afternoon.  They were 17 - 7 ahead after 14 ends & won by 17 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 34  Sutton 31  Epsom 4 points  Sutton 2 points

Epsom played away against Croydon MO's on Tuesday 12th July 2022 and won on 1 rink, lost on 2 rinks & lost overall 52 - 57 (2 - 8).

The scores were level 11 - 11 on the 10th end, but Epsom were outscored 2 - 16 over the remaining ends to lose by 14 shots.

Epsom led 17 - 7 after 10 ends & outscored Croydon MO's 10 - 3 over the remaining ends to win by 17 shots.

The scores were level 8 - 8 after 9 ends, but were outscored 4 - 12 over the remaining ends to lose by 8 shots.

Epsom were 4 - 12 down after 9 ends, but were level 13 - 13 on end 15.  Going into the last end the scores were again level, but Epsom dropped 7 shots to lose by 7.

Epsom were 2- 10 down after 10 ends, but came within 2 shots of Purley Bury on the 20th end (14 - 16).  They lost by 6 shots.

Epsom were 3 - 12 down after 10 ends & 8 - 13 behind after 15 ends.  They lost by 11 shots.

Epsom played their second game in this new league at home against Caterham on Tuesday 5th July 2022.

They won on 2 rinks, lost on 1 rink & won overall 50 - 33 (8 - 2).

Surrey Area 3 Top 4 - Epsom ‘B’

After getting a walk over against Horley Epsom ‘B’ made the short distance to Epsom Park to play in the second round on Tuesday 5th July 2022. They lost 24 - 25.
