Yonwin Cup
The Yonwin Cup 2nd round took place at Epsom on Monday 30th June.
Epsom played Chessington who were the winners in 2007. Right from the beginning it was clear that this was going to be a very close competitive game. At half way Chessington held a slight advantage, but around about the 15th/16th ends Epsom picked a total of 9 shots across the three rinks. This proved to be the turning point in the game as Epsom went on to win 62 - 51.
Over the years Epsom have played Chessington on 5 occasions winning 4 times.
In this match Terry Hoye & Roy Doughty played their very first game in the Yonwin Cup.
Epsom has won this trophy on 7 occasions.

East Surrey League

Epsom Men

Another 5 - 1 victory in the League for Epsom men.  This was the 6th 5 - 1 win of the season, but may not prove to be good enough to challenge for top place.  Playing against Godstone Epsom were always in control on 3 out of the 4 rinks throughout the game.  Epsom have an excellent record against Godstone in the League and this win made it 19 out of 23 since the League began in 1986.

Rink scores:

Rink 3   John Hart  Geoff Purrott  Graham Pilbrow  Pat Buckley    33 - 13

Rink 4   Ron Snow  Clive Banderet  Cyril Newman  Roy Ward  20 - 25

Rink 5   Bill Lawrence  Len Philpott  Terry Hoye  Peter Miller   30 - 8

Rink 6  Brian Kenyon  John Warren  George Sperring  Les Owen  25 - 12

Final Score:  Epsom 108   Godstone 58    (5 - 1)

Epsom Ladies

This was an excellent performance by the Ladies.  Godstone Ladies have won the League for the last two years, but Epsom played very well to win overall 43 - 34 (3½ -½).

Rink Scores:

Rink 1  Freda Starkey  Diana Taylor  Eileen Mills  Gill Sperring  24 - 15

Rink 2  Anne Hoffmann  Pat Felloni  Jo Ellis  Janet Cheesman  19 - 19

Final Score:  Epsom 43   Godsone 34  (3½ - ½)

Area 3 Top 4

Epsom played against Redhill on Saturday 28th June and won on the very last end after being behind all through the game.  They dropped 10 shots on the first couple of ends and just scraped home 22 - 21.

Team:  Brian Kenyon, John Warren, Martin Harbottle & Pat Buckley.

Men' Surrey Triples

John Hart, Brian Kenyon & Graham Pilbrow's excellent run in the Surrey Triples came to an end  at Croydon MO's ground on Tuesday 24th June against Newdigate.

At 5 ends the score was 3 - 4 but then Newdigate scored 7 shots to Epsom's 1 shot over the next 5 ends.

The 13th end turned out to be a very important end in the game.  Brian & John played some excellent bowls and Graham added to the score.  With Epsom holding 4 shots and a possible measure for 5 the opposing skip played an excellent last bowl to draw shot. However, Graham played an equally good bowl to regain shot.

On the 14th end the three Epsom players decided to change the length of the jack from three quarters to long.  Unfortunately this put off all the players and Epsom only scored 1 shot (1 yard away!).

The 15th end started well for Epsom, but the Newdigate number two, who played very well all evening, helped secure 3 shots on this end to make the score 8 - 15.

Epsom clawed back 2 shots on the 16th end and 1 more on the 17th end to make the score 11 - 15.

Going into the last end 4 shots down was always going to be difficult.  Unfortunately the end was quite a scrappy affair although at one stage there was a slight chance of a trail shot for the 4 to tie.  The opposing skip played some good cover bowls and Newdigate eventually won the end with 2 shots.

Epsom finally lost 11 - 17

Well done Brian, John & Graham for an excellent run in the Triples

(Thanks to Jim, Roy & Les for turning up to support)

Surrey Womens' Bowling Association

Eileen Mills reaches the Semi Final of the Surrey Singles.  She beat Linda Ryan (Southey) 21 - 19 then Debbie Souter (Weybridge) 21 - 18 in the Quarter Final.

Surrey Triples

Brian Kenyon, John Hart & Graham Pilbrow had an excellent win in the Surrey Triples on Tuesday 17th June.  They travelled the short distance to Epsom Park to play Maurice Dower, Michael O'Leary & Jeff O'Leary.  Jeff being a very successful Surrey player was always going to be a great challenge, but the Epsom Triple played some excellent bowls and were in the lead all the way through the game.  At 5 ends the score was 4 - 2, at 10 ends 8 - 3.  Then followed some good ends which stretched the lead to 17 - 5 at 15 ends.  Epsom Park conceded after 17 ends with Epsom comfortably in the lead 18 - 6.

Epsom now play in the Area Final at Croydon MO's ground.

Well done Brian, John & Graham.

Bowls England Top11

Epsom travelled to Croydon on Sunday 15th June to play in the Top 11.

The match got off to a great start for Epsom as Stefan Tomm won the Two Wood singles very comfortably 18 - 10.  The triple of Brian Kenyon, George Sperring & Les Owen had an excellent game holding a very strong triple from Croydon for most of the game.  Epsom held the lead in this game right up to the last end.  Unfortunately they dropped 3 shots to eventually lose 13 - 16.

The Fours and Pairs were always behind, but about half way the Fours came within two shots.  The Pair of Geoff Purrott & David Sowdon were well beaten 18 - 27.

Mr reliable Graham Pilbrow got off to a bad start in the singles going 1 - 9 down, and was always fighting to stay in the game.  He eventually lost 13 - 21.

The Fours game did not go its full course as Croydon had secured the win without the Fours result.

Final Scores:

Two Wood Singles:  Stefan Tomm 18  Croydon 10

Four Wood Singles:  Graham Pilbrow 13  Croydon 22

Pairs:                      Geoff Purrott/David Sowdon  18  Croydon 27

Bowls England - The Top 11 (some trivial facts and figures (I must get out more!)

The English Bowling Association was founded in 1903 - Patron Her Majesty the Queen.

On the 1st January 2008 the EWBA and the EBA merged to become Bowls England - a Company Limited by Guarantee and wholly owned by the 35 Counties.

There are thirty five affiliated Counties, to which a total of 2,700 clubs are in membership nationwide. Approximately 132,000 players come under the jurisdiction of this Association.

The National Top Club Competition started in 2003. Felixstowe & Suffolk (Suffolk) were the first winners beating Westlecot (Wiltshire).
The winning side will hold the "Top Club Trophy" for one year and will be presented with Bowls England Windcheaters at the Bowls England Annual Dinner. The runner up will hold the "Midland Counties Trophy" for one year.

A Club side shall consist of 11 male players each. All members must be bona fide members of the Club and may represent that Club irrespective of the Club through which they enter the National Championships. The disciplines shall be 4 wood singles (21 shots), 2 wood singles (21 ends), 4 wood pairs (21 ends), 3 wood triples (18 ends) and 2 wood fours (21 ends). Each discipline will be played to result, no drawn games. The winning team will be the one winning most disciplines.
Before commencing the game, the Captains will decide if the two Singles games will be played on the same rink, one after the other. If they are on different rinks then both singles will commence 1 hour after the start of the remaining games.

Since 2003 Epsom have played 13 games in this competition winning 8 and losing 5. They have reached the 4th round on two occasions - 2005 & 2008.
26 players have played in this competition with David Sowdon playing in all of these. Graham Pilbrow has played in 12, Les Owen in 11, George Sperring, Peter Miller, Brian Kenyon & Martin Harbottle in 10, Stefan Tomm in 8, Ted Ray & Pat Buckley in 7.
In the individual disciplines Epsom have won 9 out of 13 Singles games, 7 out of Two Wood Singles games, 8 out 13 Pairs games, 5 out of 13 Triples games & 6 out of 13 Fours games.
Epsom have played 9 different clubs in the Top 11 (Purley Bury 3 times throughout the competition).

Unfortunately no details of the scores were recorded for the 3rd round against Cheam Village in 2004. Therefore the figures below do not include this match.
Shots scored for: 1094 Shots scored against 992
The biggest shot difference win was 34 when Epsom beat Croydon ‘B’ in 2008 (96 - 62 & 4 - 1).
The biggest shot difference loss was 22 when Epsom lost to Croydon ‘A’ in 2008 (75 - 97 & 1- 4)
The most shots scored by Epsom in an individual match was 106 when they beat Wallington (106 - 74 & 4 - 1).
The best individual result (Pairs) was when Pat Buckley & Les Owen won 35 - 9 against Purley Bury ‘A’ in 2006.
Stefan Tomm won all his 4 Two Wood games in 2008. Graham Pilbrow has represented the Club in the Four Wood Singles on 11 occasions winning 9 times. David Sowdon has won 8 out of 13 games played (he has represented the Club in the Two Wood, Pairs & Fours).
Ron Snow & Terry Hoye represented the Club for the first time in the Top11 in 2008.

East Surrey League

Epsom v Ashtead (7th June 2008)

Ashtead joined the League in 1990 and this was the nineteenth time the two clubs had met in this League. Epsom have an impressive record against Ashtead winning 14 times and losing on just 5 occasions.
The game on 7th June also turned out to be a good day when Epsom won 78 - 63 and gained 5 points to 1.
Unfortunately one rink had to play one player short as one player was called home as there was an illness in the family. This ‘short’ rink, however, managed to secure a draw but had 1/4 taken off their final score.
Rink Scores:-
Brian Kenyon Laurie Garrett George Sperring Les Owen 27 - 13
Geoff Purrott (one player short) Graham Pilbrow Pat Buckley 20* - 20
Bill Lawrence Len Philpott John Hart Peter Miller 20 - 16
Clive Allum Jim Robson Cyril Newman Roy Ward 16 - 14
Final Result: Epsom 78 Ashtead 63 Epsom 5 Ashtead 1

Men’s Pairs
Les Owen and George Sperring against Martin Pelosi and Colin Newbold from Wallington.
What an amazing game.
At 10 ends Epsom were behind 7 - 10 and at 15 ends were further behind 9 - 15.
Les was struggling all through the game to get some consistency and it was George who was keeping the score respectable. On the 18th end Les & George fell further behind 10 - 19, but somehow managed to score a 1, 4 & another 4 to tie the game on the last end. Tossing up for the extra end Les won and gave the jack away. With his second bowl he bowled 1 inch in front of the jack. Although it was moved a little as the end progressed Les & George secured the 1 shot needed for victory.
Les & George were quite stunned by this unexpected lapse from the opposing skip as he had played extremely well throughout the game. After the game there did not seem to be a logical explanation for this extraordinary result.

Les & George lost in the next round against Sutton 16 - 20.

Coaching for visitors to the Club on Open Day - June 1st 2008

Bowls England Top 11

Epsom travelled to Cheam on Wednesday 4th June to play the Top 11.  Cheam had a very strong side, including many Middleton Cup players.

Epsom played one of the best matches seen for a long time.  The result went down to the very last few bowls of the singles.  Graham Pilbrow needed to win his game as the rinks were tied at 2 - 2.  What a game.  Playing Gary Stevens Graham fell behind 4 - 12, but gradually came back into the game.  On the 20th end Gary led 16 - 15, but Graham drew level on the 23rd end 18 - 18.  Playing in virtual darkness and urged on by all the other players Graham secured the victory required to win 21 - 19.

Stefan Tomm also had an excellent victory in the Two Wood Singles.  He played Mike McDonagh who had not lost in 11 games in this discipline. Final score:-  Stefan won 13 - 12

The pair of Geoff Purrott and David Sowdon also had a great win against Dave Wood and Eamonn Nolan.  They won 21 - 17.

The Triples and Fours both lost.  In the Triples Epsom were ahead 14 - 5 but this lead was soon lost, and the Triple of Ron Snow, George Sperring and Les Owen finally lost 18 - 24.

The Four of Brian Kenyon, Terry Hoye, Roy Ward and Pat Buckley were always playing catch up and eventually lost 13 - 20.

Overall result:    Epsom 3  Cheam 2

Open Day

Open Day was, once again, a great success with 10 members of the public turning up to try out the game.  Over 40 members of the Club also turned up to play giving the visitors an insight of what goes on in the Club.

Many of the visitors took away application forms so hopefully the Club will recruit a few new members.

Thanks to all our coaches for giving up their time.

Bad night for Epsom men on June 1st.

Three Epsom rinks played at home on the 1st of June and all lost to Sutton teams.  Two of the games were very close and were decided on the last few ends.  However, the third rink were soundly beaten.

Details as follows:-

Brian Kenyon, Len Philpott, John Hart & Graham Pilbrow - at ten ends this rink were 10 - 5 ahead, but fell behind 11 - 17 at eighteen ends.  However, on the nineteenth end Epsom played some excellent bowls and picked up 6 shots.  Going into the last end Epsom were 18 - 17, but dropped two shots to lose the game 18 - 19.

John Huxford, Stefan Tomm, John Warren & David Sowdon - this Epsom rink were always in trouble and were comprehensibly beaten by 17 shots to 29 shots.

Martin Harbottle, Ted Ray, Peter Miller & Pat Buckley - this turned out to be a very exciting game.  Epsom started poorly and were 12 - 16 adrift at fifteen ends, but then scored a four to go level.  They then took a two shot lead

at the seventeenth end, but then dropped a five.  Sutton held on to their lead on the final ends and won 26 - 20.
