August 26th 2024
Epsom Bowling Club held a bowling afternoon & barbeque on Monday 26th August 2024. 35 members turned up to play in a round robin competition followed by a barbeque. The afternoon began with a spider with the winner being Frances Suttonwood. There were 9 teams who played each other with clear winners at the end being Don Indran, Sue Skinner, Richard Senior & Christine Summerfield.
After the barbeque the vice President, Liz Hind, thanked Les Owen for organising the bowling, Martine Ellis & Sandie Harvey for organising the food, Ray Evans & Frank Thompson for cooking all the burgers & sausages. She also thanked Roy Harvey & Pauline Devereux for running the bar.
This was a highly successful day enjoyed by bowlers, family & friends.
Cropley Cup
The Annual match between the Men & Ladies took place on Sunday 25th August 2024. The men won 25 - 24.
After 12 ends across the 2 rinks the men led 20 - 18 & went on to win by just 1 shot.

In 1920/21/22 a Chas Cropley won the Men's Handicap Singles & the cup he won is engraved 'awarded outright to C Cropley'. The present Men's Handicap Cup starts in 1923 so it is thought that the cup awarded to Chas Cropley in 1922 is the one that is now played for. The first recorded Men v Ladies game is in 1950. However, no records exist between this year & 2008. Since 2008 the men & ladies have played each other 12 times with ladies winning in 2008 & 2011.

The trophy for this Competition is a silver cup dated 1926. It was presented by a B C Windeler in 1927 & the first recorded game was in 1947.
Members are asked to sign up for the afternoon or turn up on the day. The organisers then select teams.
The format for the Competition has varied over the years, (sometimes Triples, sometimes Fours), but in recent years it has been a Round Robin event ending with a Final.
Of our current membership 18 players have won the trophy & Brian Kenyon, John Warren & Anne Hoffmann have won it three times.
Brian in 2000/2010/2018, John in 2014/2019/2021, Anne in 2003/2004/2014.
Last season the winners were Penny Payne, Roger Jackson, Ruth Baker & Mary Green.

Epsom travelled to Leatherhead Bowling Club for the Chrystie Presentation Evening on Monday 12th August 2024.
The evening was organised so that all 6 teams would play on a rota system - 6 ends making a total of 18 ends.

They lost to Esher 'A' 3 - 5, beat Pippbrook 'A' 4 - 3 & beat Brockham 'A' 6 - 5.
Les played his first game representing Epsom in the Chrystie league.
After the games everyone sat down for Cottage Pie & Cheese & Biscuits.
After the meal Epsom A were presented with bottles of wine as they were the overall winners on the night. David Fearn, who organised the whole season for Epsom in the Chrystie league was then presented with the winners Shield.
David then thanked everyone for making the evening so successful.
Epsom Bowling Club would like to thank David for all his hard work picking teams for the Chrystie league & leading them to the winners shield for the 5th time.

Epsom played at home against The Insurance B A on Sunday 11th August 2024. They won on 1 rink, lost on 3 rinks & lost overall 40 - 52. Because the very hot weather the game was played over 14 ends. After 7 ends across the 4 rinks Epsom were 14 - 26 down & lost by 12 shots.
