Men Friendly

Epsom played away against Ashtead on Tuesday 16th August 2022 in a Triples match and won on 2 rinks, drew on 1 rink & won overall 60 - 32.

Details:

Rink 3  Barry Coe Frank Thompson Keith Roberts  won 30 7

Epsom led 8 - 5 after 8 ends & then won the next 7 ends to go further ahead 26 - 5.  They won y 23 shots.

Rink 4  Sue Carter Brian Kenyon John Warren  drew 15 - 15

Epsom were 4 - 10 down after 10 ends, but won 6 of the remaining ends to tie the scores.

Rink 5  Stefan Tomm John Hart Les Owen  won 15 - 10

Epsom were 8 - 6 after 9 ends, but led 13 - 9 after 15 ends.  They won by 5 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 60  Ashtead 32

Barry Coe played his first men's friendly game for Epsom Bowling Club & Sue Carter played her very first competitive game for the Club.

Did you know

The first recorded friendly fixture between Epsom & Ashtead was in 1992. There have been several years when the clubs did not play each other.  However, they have met 17 times with Epsom winning 13 & losing 4.

This season Epsom have played 7 friendly matches & won 5 & lost 2. You may be interested to know that in 2004 Epsom had 27 friendly matches, but now the Club only has 12 games on the calendar. (four of these have also been cancelled).

 

East Surrey League - Mid Week Triples

Epsom played at home against Chipstead on Tuesday 16th August 2022 and won on 1 rink, lost on 2 rinks & lost overall 50 - 51 (2 - 8). After 9 ends across the 3 rinks the scores were level 25 - 25, but Epsom were behind 38 - 43 on ends 15.  They lost by just 1 shot.

Details:

Rink 1  Jud Drinkall Geoff Virgo Ted Ray  lost 15 - 16

Epsom led 9 - 6 after 9 ends, but were 10 - 15 down on end 15. They scored 3 shots on the last end & lost by just 1 shot.

Rink 2  Wayne Thornton John Lystor Mick Cooper  lost 11 - 30

Epsom were 4 - 18 down after 9 ends & lost by 19 shots.

Rink 3  David Fearn Brian Collis Fred Read  won 24 - 5

Epsom led 12 - 1 after 9 ends & 22 - 4 after 15 ends.  They won by 19 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 50  Chipstead 51  Epsom 2 points  Chipstead 8 points

Jud Drinkall & Geoff Virgo played in their first competitive match for Epsom Bowling Club in this game.

Brian Collis played his first game in this league.

East Surrey League - Men

Epsom played away against Cheam on Saturday 13th August 2022 and won on 2 rinks, lost on 1 rink & won overall 45 - 33 (8 - 2). It was decided to play 15 ends in this game because of the heat.  After 8 ends across the 3 rinks Epsom led 29 - 14 & went on to win by 12 shots.

Details:

Epsom were 3 - 7 down after 7 ends, but took the lead 9 - 7 after 10 ends.  Going into the last end the scores were level 11 - 11, but Epsom dropped 2 shots to lose by 2.

Epsom led 12 - 2 after 7 ends & 13 - 8 after 11 ends.  They won by 11 shots.

Rink 6  David Fearn Peter Miller Wayne Thornton Les Owen  won 15 - 12

Epsom led 10 - 5 after 7 ends & 13 - 8 after 11 ends.  They won by 3 shots.

Epsom played at home against Cheam Fields on Tuesday 9th August 2022 and won on 1 rink, lost on 2 rinks & lost overall 52 - 58 (2 - 8).

Epsom led 9 - 6 after 8 ends, but lost the next 6 ends to go 9 - 13 down.  They lost by 2 shots.

Rink 5  David Fearn John Lystor Mick Cooper  lost 16 - 25

Epsom were 11 - 13 down after 9 ends, but were outscored 5 - 12 by Cheam Fields over the remaining ends to lose by 9 shots.

Rink 6  Richard Price Richard Senior Geoff Purrott  won 22 - 17

Epsom were 8 - 13 down after 9 ends, but dominated the rest of the game and went on to win by 5 shots.

Vilamoura Mixed League

Epsom played against Warlingham Park on Tuesday 9th August 2022 and won at home & away.  They won 29 - 14 (6 - 0). Both Clubs decided to play 14 ends because of the heat.

Details:

Home: John Savill Ruth Baker Fred Read won 13 - 7

The scores were level 5 - 5 after7 ends, but Epsom went on to win by 6 shots.

Away: Audrey Jones Phil Sims Brian Kenyon won 16 - 7

Epsom led 11 - 3 after 8 ends & went on to win by 9 shots.

Final score:  Epsom29  Warlingham Park 14  Epsom 6 points  Warlingham Park 0 points

Chrystie League 2022

 

2021 figures in brackets.

 

This year Epsom won 7 (5), lost 2 (4) & drew 0 (0). Epsom ended up gaining 26 (20) points and came 2nd (4th) in the League.

 

In all 20 (19) members represented Epsom in the Chrystie League in 2022.  The following are some significant appearances:-

Fred Read 9, Mick Cooper 8, John Savill 6, David Fearn & Phil Sims 5.

 

Here are some facts that you may find interesting from 2022:- (2021 data in brackets)

 

Number of rinks won 10 (8) Number of rinks lost 8 (10) Number of rinks drawn 0 (0).  Epsom won 2 (1) of the games 4 - 0 and lost 1 (2) games 4 - 0. 

 

The best match win was 44 - 21 (+23) against Esher on the 27th June 2022.

The best rink win was a 30 - 3 victory in the same game.

The highest total shots scored in a match was 70 shots on 25th July 2022 v Brockham (46 - 26). The lowest combined total of shots scored was 50, (33 - 27) was in the match against Esher on 1st August 2022.

 

In 2022 Epsom scored 328 (267) shots for & there were 258 (261) shots scored against.

The total points gained was 26 (20). When Epsom won the League in 2004 they achieved 35 points.

 

The number of members who have played in the Chrystie League since 2001 is 81. 

 

A little bit of history:-

 

Since the Chrystie League began in 2001 Epsom have played 197 matches.  Of these 117 have been won, 76 lost, 5 drawn and 11 cancelled. 

The highest number of shots scored in a season was in 2018 (392) when Epsom were the Champions

 

Since 2001 Epsom have a very good record in this league, winning in 2004, 2017 & 2018, and 2nd in 2003, 2005, 2006, 2013 & 2022.

Chrystie League

Epsom played away against Bookham on Monday 8th August 2022 and won on both rinks & the match 37 - 31 (4 - 0).

This was Epsom's last Chrystie League game this season & the second 4 - 0 win.

Details:

Rink 3  Paul Maskell Richard Price Mick Cooper Fred Read  won 16 - 13

Epsom led 9 - 2 after 9 ends & 13 - 5 after 12 ends.  They lost the next 4 ends, but were still ahead 13 - 10. They won by 3 shots.

Rink 4  Derek Martin John Savill John Wellard Frank Thompson  won 21 - 18

Epsom led 10 - 8 after 9 ends, but went behind 12 - 13 on end 13.  They outscored Bookham 9 - 5 over the remaining ends to win by 3 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 37  Bookham 31   Epsom 4 points  Bookham 0 points

Mixed Friendly v Bletchingley

Epsom played at home against Bletchingley on Sunday 7th August 2022 and drew on 1 rink, lost on 2 rinks & lost overall 38 - 55.

Details:

Epsom were 4 - 11 down after 9 ends & further behind 8 - 22 on end 14.  They lost by 14 shots.

Rink 3  Paul Maskell John Wellard Stefan Tomm  drew 11 - 11

Epsomled 7 - 5 after 9 ends & 10 - 8 after 14 ends. They lost 3 of the last 4 ends to tie the rink.

Rink 4  Barry Coe Penny Payne David Fearn  lost 16 - 19

Epsom led 9 - 7 after 9 ends & 16 - 12 after 16 ends.  They dropped 9 shots over the last 3 ends to lose by 3 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 38  Bletchingley 55

Barry Coe played in his very first Mixed match for Epsom Bowling Club.  Karen Wellard played her first match for the Club.

Did you know

Epsom first played Bletchingley in a mixed match in 2015.  Since then the clubs have played each other 5 times.  Epsom have won 2 & lost 3.  This season Epsom have played 4 mixed friendly games, won 2 & lost 2. Unfortunately 3 games have been cancelled.

Epsom played away against Wallington on Saturday 6th August 2022 won on 1 rink, lost on 2 rinks & lost overall 58 - 66 (2 - 8).

Epsom led 10 - 6 after 10 ends, but went behind 11 - 12 on end 15.  They drew level on end 20, but dropped 3 shots.

Rink 3  Stefan Tomm Bob Blaker Andrew Turnbull John Warren  won 24 - 17

Epsom led 11 - 6 after 10 ends and 21 - 9 after 16 ends.  They were outscored 3 - 8 by Wallington over the rest of the game, but won by 7 shots.

Rink 4  David Fearn Peter Miller Ted Ray Wayne Thornton  los 18 - 30

Epsom were behind 9 - 14 after 10 ends & 13 - 25 behind on end 15.  They lost by 12 shots.

Epsom played away against Wallington on Saturday 6th August 2022 and won on 1 rink, lost on 1 rink & lost overall 34 - 38 (1 - 3).

Epsom were 6 - 8 down after 10 ends & further behind 8 - 14 on end 15.  They lost by 7 shots.

Rink 6  Sandy Cooper Frances Suttonwood Sandie Harvey Ruth Baker  won 23 - 20

Epsom led 13 - 6 on end 10 & 17 - 13 after 15 ends.  They won by 3 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 34  Wallington 38  Epsom 1 point  Wallington 3 points

 

Vilamoura Mixed League

Epsom played against Croydon on Friday 5th August 2022 and won at home, lost away & lost overall 27 - 29 (2 - 4).

Details:

Home: Audrey Jones Phil Sims Fred Read won 17 - 9

Epsom led 7 - 3 after 9 ends & 14 - 6 after 14 ends.  They won by 8 shots.

Away: Liz Hind Trish Southgate Brian Kenyon  lost 10 - 20

After 9 ends Epsom were 2 - 16 down & 6 - 18 behind after 15 ends.  They lost by 10 shots.

Final Score: Epsom 27  Croydon 29    Epsom 2 points  Croydon 4 points

Epsom played at home against Purley on Thursday 4th August 2022 and drew on 1 rink, lost on 2 rinks & lost overall 42 - 49 (1 - 9).

Epsom were 8 - 9 down after 9 ends & lost by 5 shots.

Epsom were 4 - 8 down after 9 ends & 9 - 12 behind after 15 ends.  They scored 4 shots over the last 3 ends to tie the rink.

Epsom were 9 - 11 down after 9 ends & 13 - 17 behind after 15 ends.  They lost by 2 shots.

Epsom Ladies played at home against Epsom Park on Thursday 4th August 2022 and won on 1 rink, lost on 1 rink & won overall 38 - 23.

Epsom led 3 - 1 after 3 ends, but lost the next 6 ends to go 3 - 9 down (9  ends). They were outscored 4 - 6 over the remaining ends & lost by 8 shots.

Rink 6  Sandy Cooper Sue Skinner  Sandie Harvey  won 31 - 8

Epsom led 13 - 5 after 8 ends & outscored Epsom Park 18 - 3 over the last 10 ends.  They won by 23 shots.

Mixed Friendly

Epsom played at home against Reigate Priory on Tuesday 2nd August 2022 in a mixed friendly match and won on 2 rink, lost on 1 rink & won overall 49 - 47.

Details:

Epsom led 8 - 6 after 10 ends & were further ahead 14 - 8 after 15 ends.  They won by 2 shots.

Rink 3  Mick Cooper Sue Skinner Bob Blaker  lost 17 - 18

Epsom were 6 - 7 down after 9 ends, but led 17 - 11 on end 15.  They lost the last 3 ends to lose by 1 shot.

Rink 5  Audrey Jones John Lystor Sandy Cooper   won 17 - 16

Epsom were 8 - 9 down after 8 ends & lost the next 3 ends to go further behind 8 - 13.  They were still 14 - 16 down on end 16, but scored 3 shots over the last 2 ends to win by 1 shot.

Epsom played at home against Sutton on Tuesday 2nd August 2022 and won on 1 rink, lost on 1 rink & won overall 39 - 38 (3 - 1).

Epsom got off to an excellent start when the led 13 -0 after just 5 ends.  They led 21 - 6 on end 10 & 23 - 14 after 15 ends.  They won by 8 shots.

Rink 5  Liz Hind Sandy Cooper Trish Southgate Ruth Baker  lost 12 - 19

The scores were level 10 - 10 after 12 ends, bu Epsom were 12 - 14 down on end 18.  They lost by 7 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 39  Sutton 38   Epsom 3 points  Sutton 1 point

Epsom played away against Esher on Monday 1st August 2022 and won on 1 rink, lost on 1 rink & won overall 33 - 27 (3 - 1).

Details:

Men’s Championship Singles

 

Paul Jenkins (Wandilea) v Nathan Beeson (Old Dean)

 

After 10 ends Paul led 8 - 5 & was further ahead 17 – 6 after 17 ends.  Nathan then scored 8 shots over the next 3 ends to be 14 – 17 behind.  Nathan then took the lead 19 – 18 on end 23, but Paul scored 3 shots on the next end to win by 2 shots (21 – 19).

 

Junior Singles

 

Josh McCarthy (Camberley) v Ryan Bickley (Bletchingley)

 

Josh dominated this game when he led 15 – 1 after 8 ends.  He went on to win 21 – 4.

 

 

Two Wood Singles

 

Anthony Reynolds (Old Dean) v Andrew Barclay (Old Coulsdon)

 

Anthony led 11 – 5 after 12 ends & won all the remaining ends to win 16 – 5 after 17 ends.

David Andrews/James Freemantle (Cranleigh) v Anthony Reynolds/Nathan Beeson (Old Dean)

 

Anthony and Nathan dominated this game.  They led 10 – 3 after 6 ends & won the next 4 ends to go further ahead 23 – 3. Cranleigh conceded after 13 ends leaving Old Dean winning 25 – 6.

Michael Kirby (Malden Manor) v Nick Anderson (Burpham)

 

Michael led 13 – 6 after10 ends, but Nick won the next 5 ends to draw level 13 – 13. Michael then won the next 4 ends to go ahead again & scored 4 shots on end 21 to win 21 – 15.

David led 9 – 6 after 10 ends & 13 – 12 after 16 ends.  He won the next 5 ends to win 21 – 12 (21 ends).

Roy led 8 – 7 after 10 ends & 17 – 9 after 17 ends.  He went on to win 21 – 13 (22 ends).

Old Coulsdon had a 1 shot lead, 7 – 6 after 10 ends, but led 16 – 9 on the 15th end. They went on to win by 6 shots, 18 – 12.

Belmont led 9 – 6 after 10 ends, but the scores were level, 10 – 10 on end 14. Belmont outscored Camberley 10 – 5 over the remaining ends to win 20 – 15. (18 ends played).
