Ladies' Friendly

Epsom played away against Ashtead on Tuesday 30th August 2022 and won on both rinks & the match 35 - 33.

Details:

Rink 3  Sue Carter Christine Summerfield Sandie Harvey  won 17 - 16

Epsom were 8 - 10 down on end 9, but took the lead 3 ends later. They were behind again on end 16, 15 - 16, but scored 2 singles on the last 2 ends to win by 1 shot.

Rink 4  Audrey Jones Sandy Cooper Mary Green  won 18 - 17

Epsom were also behind on end 9 on this rink, 6 - 9, but drew level 13 - 13 on end 15.  They scored 5 shots on end 17 & won by 1 shot.

Final Score:  Epsom 35  Ashtead 33

Sue Carter played her very first match in a Ladies friendly.

 

Jubilee Day Celebrations

Epsom held a day of celebration on Monday 29th August 2022.  It turned out to be a very successful day.

38 members took part in a fun afternoon of bowls which was followed by an excellent barbeque with many guests joining the bowlers..

Epsom Bowling Club would like to thank everyone who made the day such a success.  A lot of hard work went into organising the day from looking after the car park, preparing food, cooking on the barbeque and clearing up.

Epsom played away against Chipstead on Saturday 25th August 2022 and won on 1 rink, lost on 2 rinks & lost overall 50 - 81 (2 - 8).

Epsom led 10 - 4 after 7 ends, but lost the next 8 ends to go 10 - 26 down.  They lost by 18 shots.

Epsom led 17 - 5 after 10 ends & 21 - 8 after 15 ends.  They lost the last 3 ends, but won by 14 shots.

Rink 5  Phil Sims Ted Ray Andrew Turnbull John Warren  lost 7 - 34

Epsom were 7 - 16 down after 12 ends and lost all the remaining ends to lose by 27 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 50  Chipstead 81   Epsom 2 points  Chipstead 8 points.

 

East Surrey League - Ladies

Epsom away against Godstone on Saturday 27th August 2022 and won on 1 rink, lost on 1 rink & lost overall 33 - 36 (1 - 3).

Epsom led 10 - 6 after 10 ends, but were 11 - 13 down on end 15.  They lost by 7 shots.

Epsom led 11 - 6 after 10 ends & 15 - 12 after 15 ends.  They won by 4 shots.

Epsom played at home against Wallington on Thursday 25th August 2022 and won on 1 rink, lost on 2 rinks & drew overall 51 - 51 (4 - 6).

Epsom led 9 - 5 after 10 ends & 18 - 8 after 15 ends.  They lost 4 of the last 6 ends, but won by 5 shots.

Epsom led 10 - 8 after 10 ends & 16 - 13 after 15 ends. They lost 5 of the last 6 ends to lose by 3 shots.

Epsom were 5 - 11 down on end 10 & 8 - 15 behind on end 17.  They won 3 of the last 4 ends, but lost by 2 shots.

Did you know

This is the 40th time that Epsom have played Wallington in this league.  They have won 26 & lost 14.

Wallington were one of 7 founder members when the league was started in 1978.  Epsom joined later in the same year.

Vilamoura Mixed League

Epsom played Ewell Village in the Vilamoura League on Wednesday 24th August 2022 and lost at home & away and the match 24 - 46 (0 - 6).

Details:

Home: Rink 6  Sandy Cooper John Lystor Stefan Tomm lost 10 - 25

Epsom were 4 - 13 down after 9 ends & 7 - 21 behind after 15 ends.  They lost by 15 shots.

Away: Rink 2  Liz Hind Brian Kenyon Brian Collis lost 14 - 21

Epsom led 14 - 8 after 12 ends, but lost the remaining ends to lose by 7 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 24  Ewell Village 46  Epsom 0 points  Ewell Village 6 points

Epsom joined this league in 2017 & Ewell Village joined in 2021.

This season Epsom have played 9 matches, won 5, lost 4 & one game the points were shared.

This was the 49th match played in this league & Epsom have won 32, lost 16, drawn 1 & 2 games have been cancelled.

Surrey County Bowling Association - Leopard Award

Les Owen was presented with the Surrey Leopard Award at the Epsom v President's team on Tuesday 23rd August 2022. Les becomes the third member of Epsom Bowling Club to be presented with this Award. (Tony Jackman 1999 & Denis Neville in 2003).

 

The Surrey Leopard Award aims to encourage, foster, promote and maintain a sense of pride and enthusiasm by members of outdoor clubs affiliated to the County. It recognises outstanding and distinguished services in administration and other duties at Club level which may have been given over a number of years or, depending on the quality, range and depth of the contributions, may have been over a shorter period. The extent to which they have directly or indirectly assisted the County Association in achieving its objectives will also be taken into account. The award is not extended to recognition of playing skills and/or services to management at Association level which are sufficiently recognised through other honours outlined in the Award of Honours Policy. Successful nominees will receive the Surrey Leopard Award, blazer flash and a Certificate describing the award.

Guidelines for Submissions

It is the highest honour in Surrey for CLUB bowlers. Whilst there may be occasions when a nominating club may wish to have taken into consideration also significant contributions made by member at a previous club, it is only the member’s current club that may propose him for the Surrey Leopard

 

Mixed Match v the Surrey President

Epsom played against the Surrey President on Tuesday 23rd August 2022 and won on 1 rink, drew on 1 rink, lost on 4 rinks & lost overall 92 - 130. Before the game began the President, Martin Harbottle presented Les Owen with the Leopard Award.  Everyone enjoyed an excellent meal after the game.  The Men's Captain Les Owen thanked everyone who made the day a huge success.

Epsom played at Chessington against Southey on Monday 22nd August 2022 and lost 13 - 20.

Epsom were level 6 - 6 after 7 ends, but were 14 - 18 down after 14 ends.  They lost by 7 shots.

Epsom played away against Shirley Park on Sunday 21st August 2022 and lost on both rinks & the match 39 - 54 (0 - 4).

Epsom Ladies played away against Caterham on Thursday 18th August 2022 and won on 1 rinks, lost on 1 rink & lost overall 33 - 34 (1- 3).

Epsom played at home against Old Coulsdon on Thursday 18th August 2022 and won on 2 rinks, drew on the third & won overall 66 - 38 (9 - 1).

Epsom dominated this rink winning 12 of the 18 ends.  They led 18 - 3 after 9 ends & won by 27 shots.

Rink 2  Kevin Phillips Derek Hoffmann Ted Ray  won 17 - 16

Epsom led 10 - 4 after 9 ends & 17 - 6 after 14 ends.  They lost the last 4 ends & won by just 1 shot.

Rink 3  Geoff Virgo Mick Cooper Wayne Thornton  drew 14 - 14

Epsom were 8 - 9 down after 9 ends & 12 - 14 behind going into the last end. Wayne, with the very last bowl, was 1 down, but played an excellent bowl to trail the jack back to 2 Epsom bowls.

Final Score:  Epsom 66  Old Coulsdon 38   Epsom 9 points  Old Coulsdon 1 point.

Brian Kenyon & Derek Hoffmann played in their very first game in this league.  Kevin Phillips played his very first competitive match for Epsom Bowling Club.

Barry Coe played his first men's friendly game for Epsom Bowling Club & Sue Carter played her very first competitive game for the Club.

Did you know

The first recorded friendly fixture between Epsom & Ashtead was in 1992. There have been several years when the clubs did not play each other.  However, they have met 17 times with Epsom winning 13 & losing 4.

This season Epsom have played 7 friendly matches & won 5 & lost 2. You may be interested to know that in 2004 Epsom had 27 friendly matches, but now the Club only has 12 games on the calendar. (four of these have also been cancelled).

Epsom played at home against Chipstead on Tuesday 16th August 2022 and won on 1 rink, lost on 2 rinks & lost overall 50 - 51 (2 - 8). After 9 ends across the 3 rinks the scores were level 25 - 25, but Epsom were behind 38 - 43 on ends 15.  They lost by just 1 shot.

Epsom played against Warlingham Park on Tuesday 9th August 2022 and won at home & away.  They won 29 - 14 (6 - 0). Both Clubs decided to play 14 ends because of the heat.

The scores were level 5 - 5 after7 ends, but Epsom went on to win by 6 shots.

Chrystie League 2022

 

2021 figures in brackets.

 

This year Epsom won 7 (5), lost 2 (4) & drew 0 (0). Epsom ended up gaining 26 (20) points and came 2nd (4th) in the League.

 

In all 20 (19) members represented Epsom in the Chrystie League in 2022.  The following are some significant appearances:-

Fred Read 9, Mick Cooper 8, John Savill 6, David Fearn & Phil Sims 5.

 

Here are some facts that you may find interesting from 2022:- (2021 data in brackets)

 

Number of rinks won 10 (8) Number of rinks lost 8 (10) Number of rinks drawn 0 (0).  Epsom won 2 (1) of the games 4 - 0 and lost 1 (2) games 4 - 0. 

 

The best match win was 44 - 21 (+23) against Esher on the 27th June 2022.

The best rink win was a 30 - 3 victory in the same game.

The highest total shots scored in a match was 70 shots on 25th July 2022 v Brockham (46 - 26). The lowest combined total of shots scored was 50, (33 - 27) was in the match against Esher on 1st August 2022.

 

In 2022 Epsom scored 328 (267) shots for & there were 258 (261) shots scored against.

The total points gained was 26 (20). When Epsom won the League in 2004 they achieved 35 points.

 

The number of members who have played in the Chrystie League since 2001 is 81. 

 

A little bit of history:-

 

Since the Chrystie League began in 2001 Epsom have played 197 matches.  Of these 117 have been won, 76 lost, 5 drawn and 11 cancelled. 

The highest number of shots scored in a season was in 2018 (392) when Epsom were the Champions

 

Since 2001 Epsom have a very good record in this league, winning in 2004, 2017 & 2018, and 2nd in 2003, 2005, 2006, 2013 & 2022.

Epsom played away against Bookham on Monday 8th August 2022 and won on both rinks & the match 37 - 31 (4 - 0).

This was Epsom's last Chrystie League game this season & the second 4 - 0 win.

Epsom led 9 - 2 after 9 ends & 13 - 5 after 12 ends.  They lost the next 4 ends, but were still ahead 13 - 10. They won by 3 shots.

Epsom led 10 - 8 after 9 ends, but went behind 12 - 13 on end 13.  They outscored Bookham 9 - 5 over the remaining ends to win by 3 shots.
