East Surrey League - Men

Epsom played against Croydon on Saturday 28th August 2021 and won on 2 rinks, lost on 1 rink & won overall 68 - 53 (8 - 2).  After 15 ends across the 3 rinks Epsom led 56 - 24 & won by 15 shots.

Details:

Rink 1  David Fearn John Hart Terry Hoye Andrew Turnbull  won 22 - 20

Epsom led 10 - 4 after 10 ends & 18 - 7 after 15 ends.  Croydon won the next 3 ends to narrow the gap to just 2 shots.  However, Epsom held on & went on to win by 2 shots.

Rink 3  Stefan Tomm Bob Blaker Les Owen Jim Scott  won 28 - 12

Epsom led all afternoon on this rink.  They led 12 - 4 after 10 ends, 25 - 6 after 15 ends and won by 16 shots.

Rink 5  Ted Ray Keith Roberts Peter Miller John Warren  lost 18 - 21

Epsom had a commanding lead 13 - 1 after 8 ends, but then lost the next 11 ends to go 13 - 21 down. They won the last 2 ends & lost by 3 shots.

Final Score: Epsom 68  Croydon 53   Epsom 8 points  Croydon 2 points

Did you know

Croydon Bowling Club was formed in 1749.

They joined the East Surrey League in 2014 (with Cheam) when 2 Division were created.

Epsom have played Croydon 10 times in the League, winning 9 & losing 1.

Epsom have won the last 8 matches against Croydon.

In the earlier meeting this season at Croydon Epsom won 80 – 41 scored maximum points 10 – 0.

 

East Surrey League - Ladies

Epsom were due top play against Godstone at home on Saturday 28th August 2021 but Godstone turned up two players short & conceded the game to Epsom.

Did you know

Godstone Ladies section was formed in 1969.

Epsom Ladies have played Godstone 23 times in this League, won 15, lost 7 & drawn 1.

This season Epsom Ladies have played 8 games in the League, won 4, lost 1 & there has been 1 game cancelled.

 

Vilamoura League

Epsom played Ewell Village in the Vilamoura League on Wednesday 25th August 2021 and lost at home & away.  They lost the match 25 - 38 (0 - 6).

Details:

Home: Mike James Ruth Baker Fred Read  lost 12 - 21

After 9 ends Epsom were 4 - 11 down & lost by 9 shots.

Away: Audrey Jones John Lystor Brian Kenyon  lost 13 - 17

Epsom l;ed 9 - 6 after 10 ends, but went behind 10 - 11 on the 15th end.  They lost by 4 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 25  Ewell Village 38   Epsom 0 points  Ewell Village 6 points

Did you know

This was the first time Epsom have played Ewell Village as they only joined the League in 2021.

 

Ladies Friendly

Epsom played against Ashtead at home on Tuesday 24th August 2021 in a triples match and won on 1 rink, lost on 1 rink & won overall 39 - 35.

Details:

Rink 1  Penny Payne Sandy Cooper Mary Green lost 16 - 18

After 8 ends the scores were level 7 - 7, Epsom were behind 11 - 16 on the 15th end.  They lost by 2 shots.

Rink 2  Audrey Jones Fi Drinkall Sandie Harvey   won 23 - 17

After 10 ends Epsom led 12 - 11 & were still ahead 17 - 15 on the 15th end.  They went on to win by 6 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 39  Ashtead 35

 

East Surrey League - Ladies

Epsom played against Shirley Park at home on Sunday 22nd August 2021 and won on 1 rink, lost on 1 rink & lost overall 33 - 38 (1 - 3).

Details:

Rink 1  Sandy Cooper Fi Drinkall Sandie Harvey Trish Southgate  lost 12 - 25

Epsom made a poor start finding themselves 1 - 15 down after 10 ends.  However, they recovered well and lost by 13 shots.

Rink 2  Audrey Jones Liz Hind Frances Suttonwood Ruth Baker  won 21 - 13

Epsom led all afternoon on this rink.  They led 12 - 11 after 15 ends & won 5 of the last 6 ends to win by 8 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 33  Shirley Park 38   Epsom 1 point  Shirley Park 3 points

Epsom have now played Shirley Park in this League 12 times, won 6, lost 5 and 1 game was drawn.

Since records have been kep Epsom have played 172 matches, won 87, lost 77, drawn 4 & there have been 5 games cancelled.

The Ladies have won this League 3 times - in 2005, 2006 & 2014.

 

East Surrey League - Men

Epsom played against Cheam Fields on Saturday 21st August 2021 and won on 2 rinks, lost on 1 rink & won overall 74 - 49 (8 - 2). After 15 ends Epsom led 49 - 38 (+11) across the 3 rinks & went on to win by 25 shots.

Details:

After 10 ends Epsom were 8 - 9 down and still behind 9 - 11 on the 13th end.  However, they won the next 7 ends scoring a total of 17 shots & went on to win by 14 shots.

Rink 3  David Fearn Ted Ray Keith Roberts Andrew Turnbull  lost 18 - 20

Epsom led 11 - 10 on the 10th end, but went behind by 1 shot, 13 - 14 on the 15th end. Going into the last end Epsom were 5 shots behind & scored 3 to lose by just 2 shots.

Rink 4  Stefan Tomm Bob Blakler Les Owen Jim Scott  won 30 - 17

After 10 ends Epsom led 22 - 4 & were 25 - 13 ahead on the 15th end.  They won by 13 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 74  Cheam Fields 49    Epsom 8 points  Cheam Fields 2 points

Vilamoura League

Epsom played Rose Hill in the Vilamoura League on Friday 20th August 2021 and won at home, lost away & won overall 34 - 26 (4 - 2).

Details:

Home: Penny Payne David Fearn Fred Read won 24 - 10

Epsom went into a 13 - 0 lead after 6 ends & still led 19 - 7 after 12 ends.  They went on to win by 14 shots.

Away: Liz Hind Frank Thompson Brian Kenyon lost 10 - 16

Epsom were 3 - 9 down after 9 ends & lost by 6 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 34  Rose Hill 26   Epsom 4 points  Rose Hill 2 points.

Penny Payne played her first game for Epsom in this League.

Did you know

Epsom have now played Rose Hill 3 times since they joined the League & won all 3 games.

This season Epsom have played 8 matches, won 5 & lost 3.  Interestingly the shots for and against at this stage are both 266.

 

Sutton & District B A - Arthur Hughes Triples

Epsom reach the Final

Epsom played Rose Hill in the Semi Final of the Arthur Hughes Triples against Rose Hill on Wednesday 18th August 2021 and won 16 - 7.

Details:

Dave Pearce David Bragg Fred Read  won 16 - 7

After 10 ends Epsom led 11 - 4 & went on to win by 9 shots.  Rose Hill conceded after 16 ends.

Epsom now play in the Final to be held at Southey on Saturday 25th September 2021.  They will play Wallington or Chessington.

Congratulations to our team for getting to the Final.

Road to the Final:-

Beat Malden Manor 25 - 7, beat Carshalton 18 - 10, beat Rose Hill 16 - 7.

 

Men's Friendly

Epsom played Ashtead in a Friendly Triples match on Tuesday 17th August 2021 and won on all 3 rinks winning 54 - 36.

Details:

Rink 1  Mick Cooper John Hart Fred Read  won 22 - 13

After 9 ends Epsom led 12 - 5, but they went behind 12 - 13 on the 13th end.  However, Epsom won all the remaining ends to win by 9 shots.

Rink 2  David Fearn Brian Collis John Warren  won 20 - 12

Epsom were 13 - 4 ahead on the 9th end and kept the lead throughout the afternoon and won by 8 shots.

Rink 4  Brian Kenyon Geoff Purrott Les Owen  won 12 - 11

As the score suggests this was a very close game. The scores were level 6 - 6 on the 10th end and were level 11 - 11 going into the last end.  Epsom scored 1 shot on the final end to win by 1 shot.

Final Score:  Epsom 54  Ashtead 36

 

Did you know

The first recorded Men’s Friendly match against Ashtead was in 1992.  Since then there have been 12 matches between the Clubs.  Epsom have won 8 & lost 4.  There were many years when there was no fixture between the Clubs.

Since 1992 Epsom have played 580 Men’s Friendly matches, winning 333, losing 245 & drawing 12.  In this time 82 matches were cancelled.

In 2017 Epsom Men won all their 11 Friendly games & repeated this in 2018 when they won all 13 games.

Chrystie League Presentation

Epsom played host to the Chrystie League Presentation on Monday 16th August 2021.  Teams from Bookham, Brockham, Epsom, Esher, Leatherhead & Pippbrook attended.

Leatherhead were presented with the Trophy after Epsom put on a Ploughman's Supper.

During the evening the teams played each other - 6 ends over 3 sessions.

Against Esher B - lost 2 - 6  Against Brockham B - won 10 - 2  Against Leatherhead B - lost 8 - 9

Overall won 20 - 17

Against Esher A - won 10 - 3  Against Leatherhead A - won 10 - 1  Against Brockham A - won 12 - 1

Overall won 32 - 5

Epsom A were presented with a bottle of wine each by Richard Wilson (Brockham) for being the overall winners on the evening.

Thanks must go to everyone who helped to make the evening such a huge success - on the car park, on the bar in the kitchen & preparing the whole day.

 

Mixed Friendly

Epsom played against the Insurance B A on Sunday 15th August 2021 and won on all 3 rinks & the match 74 - 38. 

Details:

Rink 1  Richard Price Janet Newman John Warren  won 30 - 16

Epsom were2 - 9 down after 7 ends, but won the next 8 ends scoring a total of 28 shots to go ahead 30 - 9.  They won by 14 shots.

Rink 2  David Fearn Sandie Harvey David Bragg  won 22 - 6

Epsom led 9 - 3 after 9 ends & went on to win by 16 shots.

Rink 3  Brian Kenyon Trish Southgate Brian Collis won 22 - 16

After 9 ends Epsom led 12 - 6 & won 6 of the remaining ends to win by 6 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 74  Insurance B A 38

Did you know

Epsom first played the Insurance B A in 2006.  Since then they have played 15 times, won 7, lost 5 and  there have been 3 drawn games.

This season Epsom have played 8 friendly matches won 4 & lost 4.

 

East Surrey League - Men

Epsom played against Cheam on Saturday 14th August 2021 and won on 1 rink, lost on 2 rinks & won overall 64 - 57 (6 - 4).  Epsom led all afternoon across the 3 rinks.  They led 47 - 35 after 15 ends and won by 7 shots.  David Fearn played his very first match in the ESL for Epsom in this game & had an outstanding debut. He becomes the 163rd member to play in this league.  Andrew Turnbull also played his first game as skip in the ESL.

Epsom led 16 - 13 on the 14th end, but lost the next 4 ends to go behind 16 - 20.  They lost by 5 shots.

Rink 3  Stefan Tomm Bob Blaker John Warren Les Owen  lost 18 - 25

Epsom were behind 12 - 17 on the 15th end, but drew level 18 - 18 on the 18th end.  They lost the last 3 ends to lose by 7 shots.

Rink 4  David Fearn Ted Ray Keith Roberts Andrew Turnbull  won 29 - 10

Epsom dominated this rink throughout the afternoon.  They led 20 - 5 after 15 ends & went on to win by 19 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 64  Cheam 57   Epsom 6 points  Cheam 4 points

 

Vilamoura League

Epsom played against Epsom Park in the Vilamoura League on Friday 13th August 2021 and won at home and away & the match 44 - 30 (6 - 0).

Details:

Home: Liz Hind Brian Collis Brian Kenyon  won 24 - 17

Epsom were 7 - 12 down after 9 ends & 16 - 17 behind on the 16th end. However, they scored 8 shots over the last two ends to win by 7 shots.

Away: Audrey Jones John Lystor Fred Read  won 20 - 13

Epsom led 12 - 8 after 9 ends & went on to win by 7 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 44  Epsom Park 30   Epsom 6 points  Epsom Park 0 points.

 

Ladies East Surrey League

Epsom played away against Horley in the ESLL on Thursday 12th August 2021 and won on 1 rink, lost on 1 rinks & won overall 46 - 39 (3 - 1).

Details:

Rink 3  Sue Skinner Audrey Jones Sylvia Smart Trish Southgate  won 26 - 18

Epsom were 8 - 16 down after 11 ends, but won 9 of the remaining 10 ends to win by 8 shots.

Rink 4  Sandy Cooper Fi Drinkall Sandie Harvey Ruth Baker  lost 20 - 21

Epsom were 8 - 13 down after 10 ends, but came back well winning the last 3 ends to fall short by just 1 shot.

Final Score:  Epsom 46  Horley 39   Epsom 3 points  Horley 1 point

Fi Drinkall played her very first game in the league for Epsom Bowling Club.

 

Men's Friendly

Epsom played at home against Carshalton in a Triples match on Wednesday 11th August 2021 and won on 2 rinks, lost on 2 rinks & lost overall 61 - 77.

Details:

Rink 1  David Fearn Mick Cooper Les Owen  won 21 - 15

Epsom were 7 - 13 down after 10 ends & 8 - 15 behind after 13 ends.  However, they won the last 5 ends to win by 6 shots.

Rink 2  John Lystor Brian Collis Wayne Thornton  lost12 - 18

The scores were level 11 - 11 after 11 ends, but Epsom lost the last 6 ends to lose by 6 shots.

Rink 3   Richard Price Hayden Thornton Fred Read  lost 4 - 32

Not a good evening for Epsom on this rink when they lost by 28 shots.

Rink 4  Brian Kenyon David Bragg Bob Blaker  won 24 - 12

Epsom were 8 - 9 down after 10 ends, but won 6 of the remaining ends to win by 12 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 61  Carshalton 77

 

Did you know

Carshalton Bowling Club was founded in1926 & the Ladies section in 1932.

Epsom have played Carshalton 22 times since 1992 and won 13, lost 9 and there have been 7 matches cancelled (mostly by bad weather).

 

Vilamoura League

Epsom played against Warlingham Park in the Vilamoura League on Tuesday 10th August 2021 and lost at home and away & the match 24 - 32 (0 - 6).

The scores were level 7 - 7 after 9 ends, but Epsom lost 5 of the remaining ends to lose by 3 shots.

Away: Sue Skinner David Fearn Brian Kenyon  lost 9 - 14

Final Score:  Epsom 24  Warlingham Park 32   Epsom 0 points  Warlingham Park 6 points.

 

Chrystie League

Epsom  played away on Monday 9th August 2021 against Esher and won on both rinks & the match 27 - 14 (4 - 0). The match was shortened because of poor weather.

Details:

Rink 4  Richard Price Brian Collis Mick Cooper Fred Read  won 13 - 6 (11 end played)

Epsom dominated this game when they led 11 - 3 after 8 ends & won by 7 shots.

Rink 5  David Fearn John Lystor Ted Ray John Hart  won 14 - 8 (12 ends played)

Epsom led 10 - 3 after 7 ends & won 1 of the remaining 5 ends to win by 6 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 27  Esher 14   Epsom 4 points  Esher 0 points

Mixed Match v Bletchingley

Epsom  played away on Sunday 8th August 2021 against Bletchingley in a Triples match and lost on all 3 rinks & the match 39 - 47.

Details:

Rink 2  Brian Kenyon Trish Southgate John Warren  lost 12 - 17

After 9 ends Epsom led 8 - 7, but went behind on the next end & lost by 5 shots.

Rink 3 Liz Hind Phil Sims Ted Ray  lost 14 - 16

Epsom were 5 - 9 down after 9 ends, but drew level 14 - 14 on the 16th end.  They lost the last 2 ends to lose by 2 shots.

Rink 4  Audrey Jones Richard Price Wayne Thornton  lost 13 - 14

This was a very close game as the final score suggests. The scores were level on ends 10, 15 & 17, but Epsom dropped 1 shot on the last end to lose by 1 shot.

Final score:  Epsom 39  Bletchingley 47.

Wayne Thornton played his first mixed match for Epsom Bowling Club.

 

Vilamoura League

Epsom played at against Croydon in the Vilamoura League on Friday 6th August 2021 and lost at home & away.  They lost 23 - 40 (0 - 6).

Details:

Home: John Lystor Trish Southgate Frank Thompson lost 10 - 20

After 9 ends Epsom were 3 - 16 down & lost by 10 shots.

Away: Sue Skinner David Fearn Phil Sims  lost 13 - 20

After 10 ends Epsom were 5 - 9 down & lost by 7 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 23  Croydon 40    Epsom 0 points  Croydon 6 points

David Fearn played his first game in this League.

 

Sutton & District Bowling Association - Arthur Hughes Triples

Epsom played at home against Carshalton in the Arthur Hughes Triples on Friday 6th August 2021 and won 18 - 10.  Epsom now play Rose Hill in the Semi Final.

Details:

Rink 6  Dave Pearce David Bragg Fred Read  won 18 - 10

Epsom led 10 - 5 after 9 ends & went on to win by 8 shots.

 

Ladies' Friendly v Epsom Park

Epsom Ladies made the short journey to play Epsom Park on Thursday 5th August 2021.

This was a 2 rink Triples match.  Epsom drew on 1 rink, lost on 1 rink & lost overall 32 - 34.

Details:

Rink 2  Sue Needham Ruth Baker Jane Wheeler  drew 20 - 20 (14 ends played)

Epsom trailed 6 - 12 after 7 ends, but won the next 5 ends to lead 15 - 12.  They dropped 8 shots over the next 2 ends, but won the last 2 ends to draw the rink.

Rink 3  Sandy Cooper Fi Drinkall Mary Green  lost 12 - 14 (18 ends played)

The scores were level 6 - 6 after 10 ends, but Epsom went behind 9 - 12 on the 14th end.  The scores were level once again, 12 - 12 on the 16th end, but Epsom dropped 2 singles to lose by 2 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 32  Epsom Park 34

Fi Drinkall played her very first match for Epsom Bowling Club.

 

Mixed Match v Reigate Priory

Epsom  played away on Wednesday 4th August 2021 against Reigate Priory in a Triples match and won on on all 3 rinks - 55 - 34.

Details:

Rink 2  Fi Drinkall David Fearn Frank Thompson   won 22 - 9

Epsom were 12 - 5 ahead after 10 ends & won by 13 shots.

Rink 3  Liz Hind Mick Cooper  Stefan Tomm  won 17 - 10

Epsom were 11 - 6 ahead after 10 end & won by 7 shots.

Rink 4  Sandy Cooper Richard Price John Warren won 16 - 15

Epsom led 6 - 5 after 10 ends, but went behind 9 - 12 on the 13th end.  They won the last 2 ends to win by just 1 shot.

Final Score:  Epsom 55  Reigate Priory 34

Epsom played at home against Brockham on Monday 2nd August 2021 and won on 1 rink, lost on 1 rink & won overall 33 - 25 (3 - 1).

Details:

The scores were level 5 - 5 after 8 ends, but Epsom were behind 6 - 9 on the 11th end.  Epsom won all the remaining ends to win by 13 shots.

Rink 3  John Lystor Hayden Thornton Geoff Purrott Wayne Thornton  lost11 - 16

The scores were also level, 6 - 6 on the 9th end, but Epsom lost the next 4 ends to go 6 - 13 down. Epsom lost by 5 shots.

Final Score:  Epsom 33  Brockham 25   Epsom 3 points  Brockham 1 point
