Men's Friendly

Epsom men travelled the short distance to Leatherhead on Saturday 2nd July 2011 to play in a Friendly match.  Epsom has lost this fixture in the last 2 years so were hoping for a better result in 2011.  It turned out to be a very close match with Epsom winning on 3 rinks, losing on the fourth, but winning overall by just 1 shot, 75 - 74.

Details:

Rink 2  Derek Martin  Bob Blaker  Roy Doughty  John Hart  won 18 - 16

This rink got off to an excellent start and led 10 - 3 after 10 ends.  Leatherhead soon got into the game and took the lead 11 - 12 after 15 ends.  The last few ends were very even, but Epsom snatched a win by 2 shots.

Rink 3  Bill Lawrence  Derek Jones  David Ruston  John Warren  lost 15 - 27

This rink also got off to a good start up to 5 ends, but Leatherhead came back strongly and dominated the rest of the game to be ahead 12 - 23 after 15 ends  and finished by winning by 12 shots.

Rink 4  Vic Phillips  John Huxford  Ron Snow  Terry Hoye  won 23 - 13

This rink had an excellent afternoon.  They led 21 - 4 after 15 ends going on to win by 10 shots.

Rink 5  Eddie Needham  Tony Jackman  Geoff Purrott  Eric Brown  won 19 - 18

This was a very close game.  Epsom was behind 9 - 10 after 10 ends, took a 1 shot lead, 13 - 12 after 15 ends and went on to win by just the 1 shot.

Final Score:  Epsom 75  Leatherhead 74

Thanks to John Warren for looking after this game and being Captain for the day.

Zippers News

The Zippers Bowling Association will visit Epsom on Sunday July 24th 2011.  Epsom Bowling Club is hosting the sixth Charity Day for the Zipper's Bowling Association on Sunday 24th July, 2011. The total amount of money raised by Epsom Bowling Club from these matches, up to and including 2009, is a fantastic £2,356.00.

What happens to this money? Once a year – in advance of the Zipper's AGM in March – members are asked to put forward the names of hospitals who they know are in need of financial assistance for the purchase of particular items of equipment – specifically for coronary and cardiac units or re-habilitation centres. The Association purchases these items on behalf of the specific hospital/unit. We do not give a cheque direct to the hospital per se! We therefore know that the money goes to where it was supposed to go to. The requests for grants are discussed and voted on at the AGM after investigations by the Executive Committee. At the AGM in March this year over £11,500 was donated to seven various hospitals around the country. £3,000 was spent buying a Cross Trainer for the re-hab. unit in Epsom Hospital and £1350 was used to purchase two brand new wheelchairs for the patients in the coronary and cardiac care units at St. Georges Hospital in Tooting. Please be assured that when you put your hands into your pockets or purses for raffle tickets, a spider etc for the Zipper's game every single pound that is raised will be put to a specific purpose. All our expenses are paid for out of our Annual Subscriptions (£10.00 per person per annum x 250 members = £2500) any monies left over from this are added to the other 'pot' and used as described above,
If you have never played in one of these games before then put your name down – you will not be disappointed. This game is always over subscribed – by both teams. Coming to Worple Road is a game no Zipper wants to miss. To prove the point, for the Centenary Match the Zipper's came from seven different counties!
May I, on behalf of Pat Felloni (the club's other Zipper), the ZBA, the various hospitals and their staff together with those members of the public who have benefitted from your support and generosity say a very warm and very sincere THANK YOU. We could not possibly have achieved what we have done without the fantastic support of Bowling Associations and other Bowling Clubs and their members like you. Since our formation in 1996 we have now raised and donated over £150,000.

Thank You once again -Eric Brown and Pat Felloni.

Just recently Eric Brown visited St George's Hospital, Tooting & Epsom Hospital to see the result of where some of the money goes.  Below find photographs of Eric with Staff Nurse, Patrick Steel, & Breege Skeffington, Senior Sister who are located in the Coronary Care Unit (St George's) and on the Crosstrainer (Epsom Hospital).  Click on the photographs for a larger version.

These two front steer wheelchairs include oxygen and drip stands (total cost £1,326.96) were donated to the Coronary / Cardiac Unit at St. Georges Hospital, Tooting, South London, by the Zipper’s B.A.

The Zipper’s also purchased a Life Fitness -CSX Club Series Light Commercial Crosstrainer with Integrity Control (shown above) for the Re-Habilitation Unit at Epsom General Hospital at a cost of £3,100.00.    This piece of equipment is used together with other items to help bring patients back to various levels of health.

Nothing that the Zipper’s do would be possible if it were not for clubs like Epsom B.C. and people like yourselves  - THANK YOU!!
